HNTs Improve Flame Retardant and Thermal Insulation of the PVA/CA Composite Aerogel.

Porous materials are widely used in construction, batteries, electrical appliances, and other fields. In order to meet the demand for flame-retardant and thermal insulation properties of organic porous materials, in this work, poly(vinyl alcohol)/calcium alginate/halloysite nanotube (PVA/CA/HNTs) aerogels with a hierarchical pore structure at micrometer-nanometer scales were prepared through freeze-drying using PVA as the substrate. The cross-linking reactions of PVA with H3BO3 and sodium alginate (SA) with CaCl2 constructed a double cross-linking network structure within the aerogel. And the HNTs were incorporated as reinforcing agents. The experimental results showed that the PVA/CA/HNTs aerogels had excellent flame-retardant and thermal insulation properties, and the heat release rate (HRR) and total heat release (THR) were effectively reduced compared to the PVA/CA aerogel. In addition, PVA/CA/HNTs aerogels had a high limiting oxygen index (LOI 60%) and low thermal conductivity (0.040 W/m·K). While their surface was subjected to a flame (800-1000 °C) for 25 min, the temperatures of the back surface were still lower than 80 °C. The low thermal conductivity of HNTs with hollow nanotube-like structures and the excellent flame-retardant properties of CA contributed to this phenomenon. The presence of HNTs and CA facilitated the formation of a dense carbon layer during combustion, enhancing the flame retardancy for PVA. In addition, the interpenetrating cross-linking network and the unique nanopores of HNTs collectively established a hierarchical pore structure within the gel, effectively impeding substance and heat exchange between the substrate and external environment. As the flame-retardant and thermal insulating material, PVA/CA/HNTs aerogels have a promising development prospect and potential in the fields of construction, transportation, electronics, and electrical appliances.

Bio-derived epoxy thermosets incorporating imine linkages: Towards sustainable and advanced polymer materials

In the search for sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives, Schiff-based epoxy thermosets are emerging as a promising strategy due to the inherent dynamic and reversible nature of their imine functional groups, which enables thermal reprocessability and chemical recyclability. This article explores the synthesis of Schiff-based epoxy thermosets using sustainable approaches. Starting from vanillin or syringaldehyde, the synthesis involves the incorporation of imine linkages into the epoxy network. A new strategy has been employed by self-polymerization without the use of additional curing agents. This approach conducts to novel thermosets with superior material properties that exceed those reported in previous studies. Thermo-mechanical investigations showed that the designed thermosets have high mechanical properties, with storage moduli at room temperature ranging between 1.5–2.2 GPa, and glass transition values between 138 and 249 °C. Thermal analyses allowed to evaluate the Limit Oxygen Index (LOI) which ranged from 33 % to 36 %, demonstrating excellent flame-retardant properties without the addition of supplementary additives. Their reduced density (0.74–1.09 g/cm3) makes them suitable for applications where weight considerations are critical. These results obtained results place the designed Schiff-based materials as promising candidates for a wide range of high-end applications, particularly in industries that prioritize eco-friendly processes and materials.

Synthesis of a phosphorus-containing L-lactic acid-based flame-retardant plasticizer for simultaneously enhancing flexibility and flame retardancy of poly(lactic acid)

This work provides a straightforward strategy for synthesizing efficient bio-based flame-retardant plasticizers, offering promising prospects for flame-retardant flexible materials. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) has garnered significant attention as an environmentally friendly polymer among numerous biodegradable materials. However, its high flammability and brittleness severely hinder its application in the field of electronics and electrical devices. To address these challenges, a bio-based flame-retardant plasticizer (EPDL) was designed and synthesized using renewable L-lactic acid, which significantly enhances the flexibility and flame retardancy of PLA. Incorporating 40 phr EPDL resulted in PLA achieving UL94 V-0 grade and a limiting oxygen index of 34.3 %, demonstrating excellent flame-retardant properties. Meanwhile, the peak of heat release rate and total heat release of PLA/EPDL blends exhibited a marked reduction by 23.1 % and 34.1 % compared to that of pristine PLA, respectively. The flame-retardant action mode of EPDL is the combination of gas phase and condensed phase action. Additionally, the introduction of 40 phr EPDL significantly enhanced the ductility of PLA, resulting in a substantial rise in the elongation at break of the PLA/EPDL to 181.8 %, which is approximately 52 times higher than neat PLA. Intriguingly, the crystallization performance of PLA was enhanced by the presence of EPDL.

Sustainably sourced and DOPO-derived triols as hardeners for epoxy thermosets: A promising solution to synchronously improve flame retardancy, mechanical strength and toughness

The flammability and brittleness of the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA)-type epoxy resin greatly restrict its application in electronic appliances and structural materials. However, the synchronous improvement in the flame retardancy, mechanical strength, and toughness of DGEBA-type epoxy thermosets remains a significant challenge. To overcome this challenge, in this study, a sustainably sourced and DOPO-derived triol (DOPO-GL-DCDA) was synthesized from a bio-based material, glycerol 1, 3-diglycerolate diacrylate (GL-DCDA). A series of epoxy thermosets with different phosphorus contents were prepared by introducing DOPO-GL-DCDA into the DGEBA matrix. EP/DOPO-GL-DCDA demonstrated excellent flame retardancy and mechanical properties without compromising transparency. Specifically, EP/DOPO-GL-DCDA-1.0P exhibited a limit oxygen index (LOI) of 34.0 % and a UL-94 V-0 rating, and the total heat release (THR) and peak heat release rate (PHRR) of EP/DOPO-GL-DCDA-1.5P decreased by 36.6 % and 46.8 %, respectively, compared with those of pure EP. In addition, compared with those of pure EP, the tensile strength, impact strength, fracture toughness (KIC), and fracture energy (GIC) of EP/DOPO-GL-DCDA-1.5P increased by 62.8 %, 69.9 %, 62.9 %, and 99.0 %, respectively. Moreover, EP/DOPO-GL-DCDA had better dielectric properties than pure EP. Under the premise of maintaining transparency, this work provided a promising solution to synchronously improve the flame retardancy, mechanical strength, and toughness of epoxy thermosets.

Phytic acid-induced durable fire-proof and hydrophobic complex coating for versatile cotton fabrics.

To address the current development requirements for multifunctional cotton fabrics, a phytic acid-induced flame-retardant hydrophobic coating containing nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and silicon (Si) was grafted on the surface of cotton fabrics using a facile step-by-step immersion method. The limiting oxygen index value improved to 31.2%, decreasing to 26.7% after 50 laundering cycles, while the fabric remained self-extinguishing effect in the vertical flammability test and showed a water contact angle of 126.1°. Cone calorimetry test showed that the modified fabric could not be ignited at the irradiation heat flux of 35kW/m2. When the irradiation heat flux was raised to 50kW/m2, there was a significant decline in the peak heat release rate of the modified cotton fabric, which decreased by 43.2% to a remarkably low value of 114.0kW/m2, indicating excellent flame-retardant properties. The analysis of the flame-retardant mechanism uncovered that the modified coating exhibited a significant dual flame-retardant mechanism involving both the gaseous phase and the condensed phase. Additionally, the oil-water separation tests revealed that the separation efficiency of the modified cotton fabrics was as high as 97.1% and remained around 96% after 10cycles, which made them reusable for the clean-up of hazardous chemicals.

Thermal, mechanical property and flame retardant analysis of bio-based rigid polyurethane foam modified with expandable graphite

As an energy-efficient building material, rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) has attracted attention. However, there are still great challenges in how to easily prepare RPUF materials with good mechanical properties, flame retardant properties, thermal insulation and other properties. In the current work, expandable graphite (EG)-modified lignin-based polyol (RPUF) was prepared by a one-step method. Thermogravimetric analysis was used to study the pyrolysis of modified foams under nitrogen conditions. It was found that the RPUF-4 with an EG of 10 wt% had the highest the apparent activation energy (E), integral procedural decomposition temperature (IPDT), initial temperature and residue rate. And RPUF-4 also had excellent thermal insulation properties. In addition, RPUF-4 exhibited excellent flame retardancy and smoke suppression properties (peak heat release rate (RHRR), total heat release rate (THR) and Ds were 65.46%, 23.92% and 45.94% lower than those of the unadded RPUF, respectively). At the same time, RPUF-4 also had good mechanical properties and energy absorption properties. These results will lay the foundation for the development and application of RPUF in the field of building insulation.

Enhancing flame retardancy and heat insulation performances of polyamide 66 composite film by adding CNC/Al2O3 nanohybrids

Polyamide 66 (PA66) has garnered significant attention due to its exceptional properties; unfortunately, its flammability is challenging. Adding flame retardants (FRs) is a primary approach to enhance PA66 flame retardancy. This study developed a highly flame-retardant PA66 composite film by adding corn-like functional nanohybrids (CNC/Al2O3). Interestingly, CNC/Al2O3 nanohybrids not only formed hydrogen bond interactions with PA66 but also improved crystallization properties as heterogeneous nucleating agents, resulting in the excellent mechanical properties of PA66 composite film. Remarkably, the incorporation of 3 wt% CNC/Al2O3 nanohybrids into PA66 matrix contributed to increasing the LOI to 28.5 %. The pHRR, THR, and TSR were reduced obviously by 55.7 %, 15.3 %, and 65.2 %, respectively. The excellent flame retardancy of PA66 composite film was attributed to the forming of a compact carbon layer catalyzed by the CNC/Al2O3 nanohybrids. Besides, the homogeneous distribution of CNC/Al2O3 nanohybrids endowed the composite film with excellent heat insulation, and the heat insulation rate was up to 31.9 %. Thus, such PA66 composite films with excellent flame retardancy, heat insulation, and mechanical properties could meet the broader application requirements.

Phosphonitrile based porous organic polymers as effective flame-retardant electrolytes for lithium battery

Developing electrolytes with flame-retardant properties become the critical factor in making high safety lithium batteries. As phosphonitrile-based compounds are a kind of typical flame-retardant materials, herein, taking phosphonitrile-based aldehyde as the basic organic building blocks, two porous organic polymers (POPs) named as PVPH and PVPH-CO2H were successfully fabricated after solvothermal reaction with 1,3-diaminobenzene (MPD) and 5-carboxy-1,3-diaminobenzene (MPD-CO2H), respectively for electrolytes of lithium batteries. Studies revealed that both of the phosphonitrile-based POPs demonstrate good thermal stability and excellent flame-retardant properties, suggesting they are promising flame-retardant electrolytes for the application in battery. Battery performance investigations revealed that both of them, especially PVPH-CO2H, show good performance after assembling them into lithium batteries. This study paves the way to improve battery safety performance by employing the flame-retardant phosphonitrile-based porous polymers as effective electrolytes. Moreover, it also broadens the application of flame-retardant materials in energy storage materials.

Novel phosphorous-containing epoxy thermosets with improved anti-flammability, smoke suppression, and dielectric properties

As one of the most commonly used thermosetting resins, the flammability of epoxy resins (EPs) has become a key factor limiting the expansion of their application range. Herein, a novel phosphorous-containing epoxy monomer (EDPPO) was synthesized using diallyl amine and diphenyl phosphoryl chloride as the starting materials. Subsequently, EDPPO was thermally cured with two diamine hardeners, 4, 4′-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) and 4,4′-dithiodianiline (DTDA). Additionally, commercial diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA)-type epoxy pre-polymers were cured with DDS and DTDA as comparative samples. The cured EDPPO-based thermosets showed excellent flame-retardant properties coupled with smoke suppression. Specifically, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) for the EDPPO/DDS (P content 6.4 wt.%) reached 32.0 %, and the UL-94 vertical burning test reached a V-0 rating. In addition, the PHRR, THR, and TSP values of EDPPO/DDS were 61.6 %, 49.1 %, and 58.5 % lower than those of DGEBA/DDS, respectively. The flame retardant mechanism analysis indicated that the excellent flame retardancy for cured EDPPO-based thermosets was attributed to the combined modes of action in condensed (promoting the charring capacity) and gaseous phases (quenching the active radicals). More importantly, EDPPO/DDS and EDPPO/DTDA exhibited lower dielectric constant and dielectric loss than DGEBA/DDS and DGEBA/DTDA. This work provided novel phosphorous-containing epoxy thermosets with improved anti-flammability, smoke suppression, and dielectric properties.

Photothermally responsive, magnetic and flame-retardant MOF-based polyurethane sponges for oil/water separation and emulsion purification

The development of a multifunctional sponge with photothermal effect for adsorbing high-viscosity oil, as well as magnetic drive and excellent flame-retardant property, is significant in the field of oil/water separation, but also extremely challenging. In this work, a multifunctional MOF-based polyurethane (PU) sponge was successfully prepared using a simple method. Fe3O4-loaded NH2-MIL-101(Fe) nanoparticles were immobilized on PU sponge via low surface energy polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to obtain superhydrophobic NH2-MIL-101(Fe)@Fe3O4@PDMS@PU sponge (WCA = 155.6°), which exhibited excellent oil absorption, oil/water selectivity and reusability. The introduction of NH2-MIL-101(Fe)@Fe3O4 endowed the modified sponge with excellent photothermal properties, which was manifested in that with the help of solar energy, the sponge heated up rapidly and could achieve efficient adsorption of high viscosity oil. The magnetic property of the modified sponge made it effectively separate oil and water mixture along a certain path under the control of a magnetic field. In addition, the NH2-MIL-101(Fe)@Fe3O4@PDMS coating made the sponge exhibit excellent flame retardancy, which could effectively improve the safety of the modified PU sponge in practical applications. In summary, NH2-MIL-101(Fe)@Fe3O4@PDMS@PU sponge has potential application prospects in the oil/water separation field.

Experimental investigation on hydrated salt phase change material for lithium-ion battery thermal management and thermal runaway mitigation

To efficiently ensure the suitable temperature for lithium-ion batteries, battery thermal management system based on phase change material (PCM) have gained considerable attention. A shape-stabilized composite PCM was prepared using the mixture of Na2SO4·10H2O and KAl(SO4)2·12H2O hydrated salts as phase change substrate, expanded graphite as thermal conductive filler and open-cell polyurethane foam as support material. The composite PCM containing 4 wt.% expanded graphite displayed a satisfied phase change temperature of 30.8 °C and 69.8 °C, high latent heat of 226.9 J/g, and good thermal conductivity of 1.39 W/(m·K). Meanwhile, it obtained a low subcooling degree, good leakage resistance, and excellent flame retardancy properties. Under PCM cooling in sandwich structure, during 0.5C charging and 1.5C discharging cycles, the maximum temperature and maximum temperature difference of battery were 52.47 °C and 2.20 °C, decreased by 20.4 % and 59.7 % respectively compared with nature air cooling. Furthermore, the composite PCM could significantly relieve the thermal runaway propagation between lithium-ion batteries. This work provides a feasible design and application strategy of hydrated salt based PCMs for battery thermal management and thermal runaway mitigation.

Interpenetrated Multinetwork Hybrid Aerogels by Layered Montmorillonite and One-Dimensional Hydroxyapatite Fibers for Heat and Fire Insulation.

It is of practical significance to develop aerogels with effective thermal insulation characteristics together with fireproof properties as well as high mechanical strength. Here, an interpenetrated multinetwork hybrid aerogel realizing thermal insulation, flame retardancy, and high compression modulus is demonstrated. Specifically, one-dimensional hydroxyapatite nanowires (HAP) played dual roles as the aerogel support skeleton to entangle with layered montmorillonite (MMT) each other to form a three-dimensional interpenetrated multinetwork structure and to optimize the thermal conductivity by adjusting the pore space in current HAP/MMT/PVA hybrid aerogels. Therefore, the interpenetrated multinetwork hybrid aerogels exhibit superior thermal insulation performance in room temperature (0.033 W m-1 K-1, 298 K, air conditions) and largely enhanced ultrahigh compression modulus (80 MPa). Moreover, the obtained hybrid aerogels also exhibit excellent flame retardancy and self-extinguishing smoke suppression properties (peak heat release rate and total smoke production as low as 92.44 kW m-2 and 0.1 m2, respectively), which is the outstanding interpenetrated multinetwork hybrid aerogel that has achieved synergistic improvement in heat and fire insulation and mechanical performance. Therefore, the interpenetrated multinetwork hybrid aerogels are promising candidates for efficient heat insulation, fire prevention, and mechanically robust applications.

Synthesis of novel reactive flame retardant to improve fire resistance and mechanical properties in epoxy resin

A novel reactive flame-retardant (FR), phosphorus-modified tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA-m-MVP), was prepared via aza-Michael addition process, using dimethyl vinylphosphonate (MVP). TEPA-m-MVP was successfully covalently introduced into the structure of the epoxy system, into the epoxy resin matrix synthesised from tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) and diglycidyl ether bisphenol A (DGEBA) reaction, leading to the development of a flame-retardant epoxy resin (FR-EP). The curing behaviour, mechanical properties, thermal stability and flame-retardant behaviour of FR-EP samples were investigated and compared to the behaviour of the neat epoxy resin (EP). FR-EPs showed an increase in glass transition temperature (Tg), from 120 to 147 °C upon integrating TEPA-m-MVP into the epoxy resin structure, while the value of the E modulus remained unaffected. Furthermore, FR-EP-2%P sample with the optimal P content, approximately 2 wt%, displayed excellent flame-retardant properties. In comparison to EP, total heat release (THR) and peak heat release rate (pHRR) for FR-EP-2%P decreased from 22.6 to 15.3 kJ.g−1 and from 1557 to 572 kW.m−2, respectively. In addition, an interesting impact of the crosslinking density of FR-EP samples on the fire behaviour was observed. This work presents a new strategy for the simultaneous modification of the flame retardancy and mechanical properties of epoxy systems.

Sustainable furfuryl alcohol-based flame retardants with regular spherical morphology: Endow polypropylene with excellent flame retardancy, smoke suppression, and mechanical properties

Preparation of polyolefins possessing superior flame retardant and mechanical properties has always been a hot research topic. Herein, a novel high-performance flame retardant was designed and prepared to address the dilemma between flame retardancy and mechanical properties. Through self-stabilized precipitation polymerization of furfuryl alcohol (FA) and maleic anhydride (Ma), followed by successive amination and phosphorylation treatment, bio-based phosphorylated FMa microspheres (P-FMa) were successfully obtained. Benefiting from strong synergistic effect between P-FMa and ammonium polyphosphate (APP), the polypropylene (PP)/APP/P-FMa composites exhibited excellent flame retardant and smoke suppression properties. At a dosage of only 19 wt% APP/P-FMa, the PP/APP/P-FMa reached UL-94 V-0 rating and a limiting oxygen index of 32.2 %, and the peak heat release rate and peak smoke production rate decreased by 76.1 % and 52.6 % compared with neat PP, respectively, due to the formation of denser and firmer char layer. Notably, the tensile strength of PP/APP/P-FMa maintained at a high level of 43.2 MPa. More importantly, the impact strength reached 10.5 kJ/m2, increase by 138.6 % compared to PP/APP, mainly attributed to improved dispersion and compatibility between APP/P-FMa and PP matrix. Owing to its ability to simultaneously improve flame retardant and mechanical properties, P-FMa possesses great potiential as a high-performance flame-retardant filler.

All-natural, thermally conductive, flame-retardant electrical insulating lignocellulose-mica composite film fabricated via in-situ mineralization

Miniaturized, integrated, and functional electronic devices generate a large amount of heat accumulation during operation, which significantly affects the reliability, durability, and safety of electronic devices. In severe cases, it may even lead to fires. Therefore, the development of insulation composite materials with thermal conductivity and flame-retardant properties is particularly important. In this study, we propose an in-situ mineralization strategy to prepare insulation composite materials with thermal conductivity and flame-retardant properties. By dissolving and preparing a gel film, Al3+ and Zn2+ retained inside the lignocellulose are in situ mineralized to form Al(OH)3 and ZnO, and introducing inorganic blocks with high insulation performance (industrial waste mica tailings and synthetic mica). The prepared film has excellent tensile strength (117.4 MPa), low dielectric loss, high dielectric strength (83.8 kV mm−1), high insulation resistance, four times higher thermal conductivity than the unmineralized film, and excellent flame-retardant properties. Meanwhile, the environmental impact of the composite film is much lower than that of petrochemical-based plastic films and can easily degrade under natural conditions within 32 days. It is a composite material that meets the standards of the new electrical insulation field, and the in-situ mineralization strategy can also provide ideas for the preparation of high-performance lignocellulose-based materials.

Eco-friendly MXene/enteromorpha prolifera biomass aerogel with excellent photothermal conversion and flame retardant properties for efficient separation of viscous oil/seawater mixture

Traditional adsorbents are often ineffective in cleaning up high-viscosity oil spills that cause harm to the marine environment. An efficient, safe and eco-friendly solution is urgently needed. Here, we prepare a superhydrophobic MXene/gelatin-enteromorpha prolifera biomass aerogel (H-MXene/G-EP) with excellent photothermal conversion and flame retardancy for solar-driven remediation of high-viscosity oil spills. The short-range aligned multidomain lamellar structure constructed through unidirectional freeze casting endows H-MXene/G-EP with compressibility and an adsorption capacity (63.7 g/g). Due to the excellent light responsiveness and full-spectrum high absorption of H-MXene/G-EP, it can reach a surface temperature 71.6 °C under 1 Sun (1.0 kW/m2), and an in-situ adsorption rate 367.40 g/h for viscous crude oil. The efficiency of separating O/W emulsions is up to 99.1%, which greatly broadens the range of applications for oil/water separation technology. Furthermore, the H-MXene/G-EP exhibits excellent flame retardancy, reducing the heat release rate by 89.59% and the total smoke production rate by 47.83%, respectively. This effectively reduces the probability of secondary marine fires. Thus, this novel biomass-derived aerogel provides a feasible and environmentally friendly solution for effective remediation of marine oil spills.

Effect of cage and ladder configuration of polyphenyl silsesquioxane on mechanical performance and flame retardancy of ethylene–vinyl acetate composites

Improving the flame retardancy of ethylene–vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) while maintaining its mechanical properties is critical for EVA applications. Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) can be a molecular structure designed to improve the flame retardancy of polymers while minimizing damage to the mechanical properties of polymers. In this study, two types of POSS with the same chemical structure but different spatial structures, which are named cage octaphenyl POSS (OPS) and ladder polyphenyl silsesquioxane (PPSQ) are prepared. The miscibility and dispersibility of these two types of POSS in the EVA matrix and their effects on mechanical properties, dielectric properties, and fire behaviors are also investigated. Compared to OPS-based EVA composite, the PPSQ with ladder structure has good miscibility and dispersion state in EVA matrix, obtaining better toughness, dielectric properties, and flame retardancy under cone calorimeter test. However, OPS-based EVA composite obtains superior flame retardancy than that of PPSQ-based EVA composite under small fire test (limiting oxygen index and UL-94 vertical burning tests). The mechanism of these two separate flame-retardant performances under various scenarios is explored. A novel flame-retardant model is proposed, as well as a new understanding of the role of POSS in EVA combustion. This study provides powerful guidance for obtaining EVA composites with excellent flame retardant and mechanical properties.

Effects of Recycled Polyethylene on Natural Rubber Composite Blends Filled with Aluminum Trihydroxide and Polyurethane Waste: Mechanical and Dynamic Mechanical Properties, Flammability.

This research studies natural rubber (NR) composite blends prepared with recycled polyethylene (PE), polyurethane waste (PU), silica (SiO2), and aluminum trihydroxide (ATH) under the proper mixing conditions using an internal mixer and a two-roll mill. The mechanical, impact, dynamic mechanical, and thermal properties, together with flammability, were investigated. NR/PU composites filled with a specific SiO2/ATH concentration resulted in excellent flame-retardant properties without using PE. Adding PE causes poor flammability, while using PU and SiO2 prevents flame extensibility of the composites. In addition, SiO2 and ATH synergistically improved both mechanical and dynamical mechanical properties. This is attributed to the reinforcement of SiO2 particles inside the matrix, whereas the ATH releases water as a flame retardant. The V-0 composites tested with UL-94 showed acceptable heat resistance, strength, and durability, making them suitable for interior and exterior applications in buildings without the lightweight requirement.

Study on the mechanism of controlling the morphology of basic magnesium carbonate prepared under different hydration conditions

Basic magnesium carbonate is gaining prominence in flame retardant materials due to its excellent flame-retardant properties and clean decomposition products. This study investigates a hydration-carbonation method to address challenges related to the preparation, morphology control, and stability of magnesium basic carbonate. The impact of hydration conditions on the morphology of the carbonate was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results indicate that spherical magnesium basic carbonate with regular morphology and uniform particle size can be achieved at a hydration temperature of 50°C for 1.5 hours. However, extending the hydration time and increasing the temperature resulted in irregular morphologies. Molecular dynamics simulations using the CASTEP and Forcite modules of Materials Studio were employed to understand the influence of hydration-carbonation conditions on the carbonate's morphology. The simulations revealed that the (1 1 1) and (2 0 0) crystal faces of MgO, with higher surface energies, promote the formation of precursor magnesium hydroxide nuclei, leading to heterogeneous magnesium alkali carbonate at elevated temperatures. Prolonged hydration time resulted in fragmented carbonate structures. To control the morphology of magnesium alkali carbonate, it is essential to optimize hydration temperature and duration. The simulation results corroborate experimental findings, providing deeper insights into the liquid-gas-solid adsorption relationships during the carbonation process. This study offers valuable guidelines for the controlled synthesis of magnesium basic carbonate, enhancing its applicability in flame retardant materials.

Modification with lignin-based N-P flame retardant to improve the flame retardancy and smoke suppression of wood

The development of effective and eco-friendly wood-based functional composites is crucial for maximizing the value of forest resources. In this paper, we propose a novel method for preparing an aqueous-phase flame retardant (MPUC) using carboxymethylation alkali lignin, phytic acid, and melamine-urea-glyoxal resin. This approach aims to manufacture modified wood (MW/MPUC) with exceptional flame-retardant and smoke-suppressing properties. The results from the cone calorimeter test indicate that the modified wood achieved a remarkable reduction of up to 56.8 % in total heat release and an impressive 92.3 % decrease in total smoke production. Furthermore, the limiting oxygen index increased significantly from 23.6 % (natural wood) to 41.5 % (MW/MPUC-2). Notably, all modified wood successfully passed the V-1 test for UL-94 flammability rating. Further, our investigation into the gas-phase products formed during pyrolysis and the condensed-phase system created after combustion has led us to propose potential flame-retardant mechanisms for these flame retardants. Moreover, modified wood had improved mechanical properties and dimensional stability than natural wood. In addition, we extended the application of MPUC-2 flame-retardant to other flammable materials and demonstrated its excellent flame-retardant properties. Thus, the proposed strategy provided a new approach for preparing wood-based flame-retardant composites with lignin-based N-P flame retardants.
