Research on Radical Innovation Technology Forecasting Based on Technology Evolution Theory

Radical innovation (RI) is a high efficient technology innovation for modern enterprises to participate in market competitions. It’s the great significance to upgrade technology and enhance the capability of the independent innovations for enterprises. After the product technology system was decomposed, we can summarize the core functions and core technical subsystems and analyze the current technology evolution state of the product core technical subsystems. For the mature stage of the product, the radical innovation technology forecasting inherent basic law is revealed through establishing product technology system evolution process model for radical innovation based on technology evolution theory. The technology forecasting process of the magnetic cushion belt conveyor is taken as an example to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

METHOD FOR FORECASTING DI BASED ON TRIZ TECHNOLOGY SYSTEM EVOLUTION THEORY

Disruptive Innovation (DI) is an effective method for a new firm to enter mature market. According to the composing analysis of the technical system for the product, six kinds of typical state in the technical system process can be detected. In accordance with technology system evolution analysis, two kinds of evolutionary technologies — mainstream evolutionary technologies and laggard evolutionary technologies — can be detected. Then, the conditions for forecasting DI technologies are established. Based on evolution path lines of TRIZ, the potential DI can be forecasted. As a case study, the video game console system is investigated. The study shows that the adoption of TRIZ evolution theory in forecasting disruptive technologies of product is feasible.

Research on Capturing of Customer Requirements Based on Innovation Theory

Abstract To exactly and effectively capture customer requirements information, a new customer requirements capturing modeling method was proposed. Based on the analysis of function requirement models of previous products and the application of technology system evolution laws of the Theory of Innovative Problem Solving (TRIZ), the customer requirements could be evolved from existing product designs, through modifying the functional requirement unit and confirming the direction of evolution design. Finally, a case study was provided to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed approach.

Driving Force and Process Model of Technological System Evolution

At last, a case study of the mobile phone verified the proposed theory.

Determining reverse salient types and evolutionary dynamics of technology systems with performance disparities

Technological system evolution is marked by the uneven evolution of constituent sub-systems. Subsequently, system evolution is hampered by the resulting state of unevenness, or reverse salience, which results from the presence of the sub-system that delivers the lowest level of performance with respect to other sub-systems, namely, the reverse salient. In this paper, we develop absolute and proportional performance gap measures of reverse salience and, in turn, derive a typology of reverse salients that distinguishes alternative dynamics of change in the evolving system. We subsequently demonstrate the applicability of the measures and the typology through an illustrative empirical study of the PC (personal computer) technological system that functions as a gaming platform. Our empirical analysis demonstrates that patterns of temporal dynamics can be distinguished with the measurement of reverse salience, and that distinct paths of technological system evolution can be identified as different types of reverse salients emerge over time.

Laws of Technological System Evolution Applied in the Conceptual Design of New Stereo Garage

Based on lines of technological system evolution in TRIZ, the seminar analyzed the current situation of the stereo garage development, summarized the evolutionary lines, mapped out the potential evolution diagram of stereo garage combining with improved evolutionary potential diagram, and concluded evolutionary potential in automation, spheroidality, intellectualization, standardization and multi-systematic. Based on the above, a new model for conceptual design of the stereo garage was raised. The success of the design and trial production of new stereo garage indicated the feasibility of application of technical system evolution law in predicting the future development of product.

Stimulated Variation and Cascades: Two Processes in the Evolution of Complex Technological Systems

Michael Schiffer’s theoretical and methodological contributions to archaeology are substantial. For the last two decades, Schiffer has become increasingly interested in the history of electrical technology, including portable radios, electric automobiles, eighteenth-century electrostatic technology, and, most recently, nineteenth-century electric light and power systems. Schiffer has long held a behavioral view, which focuses analytical attention on interactions between humans and material things, including complex technological systems (CTSs). For Schiffer, two key aspects of the evolution of CTSs are stimulated variation, defined as an increase in invention resulting from changing selective conditions, and cascading, defined as sequential spurts of invention that occur through the recognition of emergent performance problems in a CTS. To attain maximum usefulness, these concepts should be placed in a modern evolutionary framework that correctly identifies, and does not oversell, the role played by cultural selection. Research on individual and social learning provides the critical link between Schiffer’s stimulated variation and cascade models and the diffusion of CTSs.

The role of policy in the evolution of technological innovation systems for photovoltaic power in Germany and the Netherlands

In this paper, we examine the role of policy in the evolution of technological innovation system and diffusion of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels in Germany and the Netherlands. PV power development and diffusion have been actively supported in both countries; however, Germany has a welldeveloped technological innovation system and a successful industry, whereas the Netherlands has not. The focus of this paper is on the dynamic relationship between policy developments and technology innovation systems developments. Within both countries policy has changed over time but the German feed-in law provided an element of continuity which the Dutch policy lacked. The creation of a successful industry for PV in Germany can be attributed to the greater consistency and continuity of the German policies.

Attractive products are changed significantly by requirement definition and conceptual design phase. Quality of product concept, which is result of these phases, depends heavily on creativity of designer or development team. Therefore, it is difficulty that computer-aided system supports a creative and inventive thinking process, to search a creative design solution. To overcome its difficulty, we developed the synthesis approach which combined the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm and the Particles Method of Unified Structured Inventive Thinking (USIT) for supporting to top-down thinking in problem solving process, and confirmed the validity of this approach. In this paper, in order to give a connection rule of time dependence for particles, we introduced the Evolution of technological systems.

Collective knowledge production costs and the dynamics of technological systems

Technological knowledge can be understood as a collective good only when its production requires the absorption and integration of external knowledge. Such external knowledge is the outcome of R&D investments that cannot be fully appropriated by firms and generate spillovers. The exploitation of such knowledge spillovers requires specific investments in knowledge communication and absorption, which brings about specific costs. These costs are affected by the structural and dynamic characteristics of technological systems in terms of the knowledge base, the variety of actors and the communication infrastructures and processes. This paper analyzes the costs of collective knowledge production and their implications for the way in which the firm chooses the mix of internal and external knowledge. This choice in turn shapes the evolution of technological systems.

DYNAMICS OF REVERSE SALIENCE AS TECHNOLOGICAL PERFORMANCE GAP: AN EMPIRICAL STUDY OF THE PERSONAL COMPUTERTECHNOLOGY SYSTEM

The evolution of technological systems is hindered by systemic components, referred to as reverse salients, which fail to deliver the necessary level of technological performance thereby inhibiting the performance delivery of the system as a whole. This paper develops a performance gap measure of reverse salience and applies this measurement in the study of the PC (personal computer) technological system, focusing on the evolutions of firstly the CPU (central processing unit) and PC game sub-systems, and secondly the GPU (graphics processing unit) and PC game sub-systems. The measurement of the temporal behavior of reverse salience indicates that the PC game sub-system is the reverse salient, continuously trailing behind the technological performance of the CPU and GPU sub-systems from 1996 through 2006. The technological performance of the PC game sub-system as a reverse salient trails that of the CPU sub-system by up to 2300 MHz with a gradually decreasing performance disparity in recent years. In contrast, the dynamics of the PC game sub-system as a reverse salient trails the GPU sub-system with an ever increasing performance gap throughout the timeframe of analysis. In addition, we further discuss the research and managerial implications of our findings.

System approach for problem solving applied to the storm water drainage

The solutions in the storm water evacuation systems have developed in the past and aredeveloping into the future. It is desired to learn about their evolution from the point of view ofthe evolution of technical systems. Knowledge about the system evolution can be used tospeed up the evolution and to propose the new solution advancing in the con-ect direction. Inorder to start the analysis of the technological system evolution, it is necessary to describe theproblem identified with the system of storm water evacuation and then to define theparameters which allow the positioning of the system on the evolution line. In this paper wepropose the fomrnlation of the problem in the form of contradiction. We also propose theparameters which can be used as index of development in the stonn water evacuationsystems. Finally, we pose a question about the future development of the solutions in thestom1 water evacuation systems. The intention of this paper is to make an introduction intothe research of the technical system evolution of the stom1 water evacuation system.

Spontaneous emergence of modularity in cellular networks.

Modularity is known to be one of the most relevant characteristics of biological systems and appears to be present at multiple scales. Given its adaptive potential, it is often assumed to be the target of selective pressures. Under such interpretation, selection would be actively favouring the formation of modular structures, which would specialize in different functions. Here we show that, within the context of cellular networks, no such selection pressure is needed to obtain modularity. Instead, the intrinsic dynamics of network growth by duplication and diversification is able to generate it for free and explain the statistical features exhibited by small subgraphs. The implications for the evolution and evolvability of both biological and technological systems are discussed.

MIT Press, Cambridge, MA, pp. 51–82), this paper sees music copyright management institutions as a ‘reverse salient’ in the large technological system of mobile music businesses. We argue that the development of mobile music business has been and will continue to be dependent on how to revise copyright management institutions in accordance with changes and advancement of technologies and other sub-components in the large technological system.

Transforming the energy sector: the evolution of technological systems in renewable energy technology

This paper analyses the development and diffusion of technologies that utilize renewable energy sources in Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands.The analysis enlarges the life cycle model of industry evolution to one where the focus is on the formation and evolution of new technological systems. Particular focus is on explaining success and failures in shifting from a formative phase into one characterized by positive feedbacks. A set of challenges is identified for policy makers attempting to influence the process of transforming the energy sector.

Evolution of Multinational Corporate Technological Systems in the UK and US

This paper examines the evolution since 1969 of the industrial structure of local technological development by US-owned multinational enterprises (MNEs) in the UK, by comparison with UK-owned MNEs in the US. The data used are the patents granted in the US to the largest US-owned and UK-owned firms, organised by the principal industry of the firm and the original location of the innovative facility responsible for each patented invention. The evidence illustrates the effect of a shift towards internationally integrated strategies for corporate technological development. In each case the local innovation of MNEs has moved closer to the industries of host country technological advantage, and hence to utilising location-specific capabilities as a source of competitive advantage in the MNE. We interpret this as a shift from an asset-exploiting towards an asset-augmenting form of foreign direct investment (fdi).

The hunt for S -shaped growth paths in technological innovation: a patent study *

Since the works by the business cycle theorists in the 1930s, no attempts have been made to study empirically the long term evolution paths of individual technologies starting with long time series. This is an empirical exploration and confirmation of the now almost assumed image or metaphor of the way technology develops; that it follows an S-shaped growth path which is commonly associated with a similar shaped diffusion function of entrepreneurial activity. The paper also confirms the diversity of technology dynamics and explores how technological cycle takeoffs appear to be clustered within certain historical epochs. The results have implications for our understanding of the evolution paths of individual technologies, and of the evolution of technological systems and waves of innovation.
