The synergistic effect of NOx and SO2 on the formation and light absorption of secondary organic aerosols from ο-xylene photooxidation

Both NOx and SO2 are important anthropogenic air pollutants that significantly affect secondary organic aerosols (SOA) formation. However, our understanding of the combined effects of NOx and SO2 on SOA formation is still insufficient. The concentrations, optical properties, and chemical compositions of SOA formed through ο-xylene photooxidation under various NOx concentrations were investigated with or without SO2 in the chamber. It was found that SOA mass concentration increased from 60 to 129 μg m−3 when the initial NOx concentration was increased from 0 to 900 ppb. The presence of 50 ppb SO2 not only enhanced ο-xylene SOA formation by 1.6–2.9 times, but also changed the evolution of SOA with NOx. The enhancement of ο-xylene SOA formation was primarily attributed to acid-catalyzed heterogeneous reactions initiated by nitric acid and sulfuric acid. However, SOA concentration decreased under 900 ppb NOx when SO2 was present, likely due to the decrease in sulfate production because of the competition between NOx and SO2 for ·OH. In addition, nitrogen-containing organic compounds (NOCs) concentrations and mass absorption coefficients (MACλ=365 nm) were promoted by both NOx and SO2. Our research indicates that the promotion of both NOCs formation by NOx, and oligomer formation by SO2 were the main reasons for the enhanced SOA light absorption. The present research provides a scientific basis for understanding the combined effects of both NOx and SO2 on ο-xylene SOA formation, and illustrates that the imbalanced reduction of anthropogenic air pollutants would lead to new characteristics in SOA pollution.

On the sources of ambient SOA in PM2.5: An integrated analysis over Jinan city of China

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) accounts for a significant fraction of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and is a crucial component that affects climate and public health. However, the formation of SOA in urban areas remains unclear and sources contributed to SOA are poorly characterized. In this study, we combined ambient measurements and the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF)-Community Multi-scale Air Quality (CMAQ) modeling system to investigate the evolution of SOA during winter over Jinan city in China. Relative contributions of different anthropogenic sources to ambient SOA were subsequently probed by the Integrated Source Apportionment Method (ISAM) to explore the impact of anthropogenic emissions. The mean concentration of SOA was 11.2 μg m−3, accounting for 29.4% in PM2.5, and SOA concentrations on clean days (4.9 μg m−3) increased by 4.8 times on polluted days (23.3 μg m−3), and strong correlation between the elevated PM2.5 episodes and increased SOA concentrations was found (R2 > 0.5). In addition, SOA concentrations and the proportion of SOA in PM2.5 were higher during the daytime (24.9 μg m−3, 32.4%) compared to nighttime (21.9 μg m−3, 25.1%) on polluted days, which is primarily attributed to the intense atmospheric photochemical reactions and anthropogenic activities. Mobile sources act as the dominant contributor to SOA (57.6%) and road diesel emissions (30.9%) made the largest contribution to SOA, followed by non-road mobile sources (17.4%) among subsectors in mobile sources. This study sheds new insights into ambient SOA formation and SOA source apportionment for typical megacities in China, guiding the design of source-oriented regulation efforts on SOA mitigation.

Age evolution of secondary organic aerosol: Impacts of regional transport and aerosol volatility

In this study, a revised CMAQ model incorporating source and temporal apportioning functions has been used to analyze the aging characteristics of SOA in East Asia. The results show that in the aerosol phase, the fraction of the non-volatile components typically fluctuates around 75 %–95 %, and aromatic hydrocarbon precursors contribute significantly to SOA, accounting for 45.6 %–72.7 % in winter and 29.1 %–52.7 % in summer. Transport due to meteorological conditions does not affect the SOA volatility profile in the cities, while regional source composition has been found to be important for the characterization of the properties of SOA in cities. When the SOA regional composition type is a multi-region-imported-dominated type (MRT), its age composition type tends to be an old-age-SOA-dominated type (OAT) (>48 h). Additionally, transport also causes fluctuations in the range of hourly SOA with atmospheric age of 96 h or higher. The SOAs normally transport through seasonal monsoon and could migrate longer in winter (700-1500 km in January) than in other seasons (250-900 km in April; 500-1200 km in July; 300-1000 km in October). Additionally, in winter, non-volatile SOA generally has a longer transport distance (700-1600 km) than semi- and low-volatile SOA (300-1300 km and 600-1500 km). Furthermore, during the transport process, geographical barriers have negligible impact on SOA in the 48+ hour age group.

Secondary Organic Aerosol Formation from Volatile Chemical Product Emissions: Model Parameters and Contributions to Anthropogenic Aerosol.

Volatile chemical products (VCP) are an increasingly important source of hydrocarbon and oxygenated volatile organic compound (OVOC) emissions to the atmosphere, and these emissions are likely to play an important role as anthropogenic precursors for secondary organic aerosol (SOA). While the SOA from VCP hydrocarbons is often accounted for in models, the formation, evolution, and properties of SOA from VCP OVOCs remain uncertain. We use environmental chamber data and a kinetic model to develop SOA parameters for 10 OVOCs representing glycols, glycol ethers, esters, oxygenated aromatics, and amines. Model simulations suggest that the SOA mass yields for these OVOCs are of the same magnitude as widely studied SOA precursors (e.g., long-chain alkanes, monoterpenes, and single-ring aromatics), and these yields exhibit a linear correlation with the carbon number of the precursor. When combined with emissions inventories for two megacities in the United States (US) and a US-wide inventory, we find that VCP VOCs react with OH to form 0.8-2.5× as much SOA, by mass, as mobile sources. Hydrocarbons (terpenes, branched and cyclic alkanes) and OVOCs (terpenoids, glycols, glycol ethers) make up 60-75 and 25-40% of the SOA arising from VCP use, respectively. This work contributes to the growing body of knowledge focused on studying VCP VOC contributions to urban air pollution.

Time-Resolved Molecular Characterization of Secondary Organic Aerosol Formed from OH and NO3 Radical Initiated Oxidation of a Mixture of Aromatic Precursors.

Aromatic hydrocarbons (ArHCs) and oxygenated aromatic hydrocarbons (ArHC-OHs) are emitted from a variety of anthropogenic activities and are important precursors of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) in urban areas. Here, we analyzed and compared the composition of SOA formed from the oxidation of a mixture of aromatic VOCs by OH and NO3 radicals. The VOC mixture was composed of toluene (C7H8), p-xylene + ethylbenzene (C8H10), 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (C9H12), phenol (C6H6O), cresol (C7H8O), 2,6-dimethylphenol (C8H10O), and 2,4,6-trimethylphenol (C9H12O) in a proportion where the aromatic VOCs were chosen to approximate day-time traffic-related emissions in Delhi, and the aromatic alcohols make up 20% of the mixture. These VOCs are prominent in other cities as well, including those influenced by biomass combustion. In the NO3 experiments, large contributions from CxHyOzN dimers (C15-C18) were observed, corresponding to fast SOA formation within 15-20 min after the start of chemistry. Additionally, the dimers were a mixture of different combinations of the initial VOCs, highlighting the importance of exploring SOAs from mixed VOC systems. In contrast, the experiments with OH radicals yielded gradual SOA mass formation, with CxHyOz monomers (C6-C9) being the dominant constituents. The evolution of SOA composition with time was tracked and a fast degradation of dimers was observed in the NO3 experiments, with concurrent formation of monomer species. The rates of dimer decomposition in NO3 SOA were ∼2-3 times higher compared to those previously determined for α-pinene + O3 SOA, highlighting the dependence of particle-phase reactions on VOC precursors and oxidants. In contrast, the SOA produced in the OH experiments did not dramatically change over the same time frame. No measurable effects of humidity were observed on the composition and evolution of SOA.

Volatility of aerosol particles from NO3 oxidation of various biogenic organic precursors

Abstract. Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) is formed through the oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can be of both natural and anthropogenic origin. While the hydroxyl radical (OH) and ozone (O3) are the main atmospheric oxidants during the day, the nitrate radical (NO3) becomes more important during the nighttime. Yet, atmospheric nitrate chemistry has received less attention compared to OH and O3. The Nitrate Aerosol and Volatility Experiment (NArVE) aimed to study the NO3-induced SOA formation and evolution from three biogenic VOCs (BVOCs), namely isoprene, α-pinene, and β-caryophyllene. The volatility of aerosol particles was studied using isothermal evaporation chambers, temperature-dependent evaporation in a volatility tandem differential mobility analyzer (VTDMA), and thermal desorption in a filter inlet for gases and aerosols coupled to a chemical ionization mass spectrometer (FIGAERO-CIMS). Data from these three setups present a cohesive picture of the volatility of the SOA formed in the dark from the three biogenic precursors. Under our experimental conditions, the SOA formed from NO3 + α-pinene was generally more volatile than SOA from α-pinene ozonolysis, while the NO3 oxidation of isoprene produced similar although slightly less volatile SOA than α-pinene under our experimental conditions. β-Caryophyllene reactions with NO3 resulted in the least volatile species. Four different parameterizations for estimating the saturation vapor pressure of the oxidation products were tested for reproducing the observed evaporation in a kinetic modeling framework. Our results show that the SOA from nitrate oxidation of α-pinene or isoprene is dominated by low-volatility organic compounds (LVOCs) and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs), while the corresponding SOA from β-caryophyllene consists primarily of extremely low-volatility organic compounds (ELVOCs) and LVOCs. The parameterizations yielded variable results in terms of reproducing the observed evaporation, and generally the comparisons pointed to a need for re-evaluating the treatment of the nitrate group in such parameterizations. Strategies for improving the predictive power of the volatility parameterizations, particularly in relation to the contribution from the nitrate group, are discussed.

First insights into the molecular characteristics of atmospheric organic aerosols from Iasi, Romania: Behavior of biogenic versus anthropogenic contributions and potential implications

The present study reports first data on the organic molecular composition and evolution of secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) markers in aerosol samples from an urban environment in Romania. Targeted and non-targeted approaches of liquid chromatography tandem with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-ToF-MS) were used as powerful analytical approaches for aerosol characterization at the molecular level. Four distinct organic molecular groups (CHO, CHON, CHONS, and CHOS) were classified as relevant for both warm (with 847 assigned molecular formulae) and cold (with 432 assigned molecular formulae) periods. Different formation mechanisms, physico-chemical processing, meteorological conditions, and sources origin or strengths (biogenic versus anthropogenic), were identified as governing factors of the mass concentration size distribution for the first generation and second-generation oxidation products of α-/β-pinene and two nitroaromatics (i.e., 4-nitrophenol and 4-nitrocatechol). Aromaticity equivalent (XC), carbon oxidation state (OSC), H/C and O/C ratios, and van Krevelen diagrams, were used to discriminate between: i) the aliphatic or aromatic nature of the identified organic aerosol constituents, ii) the oxidation state of the aerosol samples (e.g., more oxidized molecular formulae during the highly insolated period, more intense photochemistry), and iii) sources role in controlling OAs constituents abundances and behavior (e.g., higher relative contributions of aliphatic CHO formulae with a wider range of carbon numbers and CHOS molecular group with higher contribution during the warm period due to increased biogenic emissions or secondary formation from the biogenic precursors). Since in the present study >88 % of the 4-nitrocatechol and 4-nitrophenol was determined in the aerosol size fraction below 1 μm, it is believed that determination of their abundances and size distribution in ambient aerosols might provide direction for future studies such as to enhance the knowledge on their toxic potential levels for the human health.

Impact of phase state and non-ideal mixing on equilibration timescales of secondary organic aerosol partitioning

Abstract. Evidence has accumulated that secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) exhibit complex morphologies with multiple phases that can adopt amorphous semisolid or glassy phase states. However, experimental analysis and numerical modeling on the formation and evolution of SOA still often employ equilibrium partitioning with an ideal mixing assumption in the particle phase. Here we apply the kinetic multilayer model of gas–particle partitioning (KM-GAP) to simulate condensation of semi-volatile species into a core–shell phase-separated particle to evaluate equilibration timescales of SOA partitioning. By varying bulk diffusivity and the activity coefficient of the condensing species in the shell, we probe the complex interplay of mass transfer kinetics and the thermodynamics of partitioning. We found that the interplay of non-ideality and phase state can impact SOA partitioning kinetics significantly. The effect of non-ideality on SOA partitioning is slight for liquid particles but becomes prominent in semisolid or solid particles. If the condensing species is miscible with a low activity coefficient in the viscous shell phase, the particle can reach equilibrium with the gas phase long before the dissolution of concentration gradients in the particle bulk. For the condensation of immiscible species with a high activity coefficient in the semisolid shell, the mass concentration in the shell may become higher or overshoot its equilibrium concentration due to slow bulk diffusion through the viscous shell for excess mass to be transferred to the core phase. Equilibration timescales are shorter for the condensation of lower-volatility species into semisolid shell; as the volatility increases, re-evaporation becomes significant as desorption is faster for volatile species than bulk diffusion in a semisolid matrix, leading to an increase in equilibration timescale. We also show that the equilibration timescale is longer in an open system relative to a closed system especially for partitioning of miscible species; hence, caution should be exercised when interpreting and extrapolating closed-system chamber experimental results to atmosphere conditions. Our results provide a possible explanation for discrepancies between experimental observations of fast particle–particle mixing and predictions of long mixing timescales in viscous particles and provide useful insights into description and treatment of SOA in aerosol models.

Explosive formation of secondary organic aerosol due to aerosol-fog interactions

Aerosol particles can profoundly affect the local environment and global climate. Explosive growths of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) are frequently observed during serious haze evens, but their fundamental mechanism remains unclear. We used chamber experiments and kinetic model simulations to reveal the microphysical mechanism for explosive organic aerosol formation. The evolution of SOA with organic vapors under dry and highly humid conditions was determined based on a high-resolution Orbitrap mass spectrometer. We found that the condensation of gas-phase organics could lead to the formation of cloud or fog droplets with relative humidity below 100 %; meanwhile, the aerosol-fog interaction could result in the explosive growth of SOA. Monomeric products from toluene oxidation were verified to primarily contribute to the increased SOA in super humid conditions, which are mainly assigned to be intermediate- and semi-volatile organic compounds. Moreover, we demonstrated that the decreasing temperatures could dramatically amplify organic compounds' co-condensing influence on SOA explosive formation and activation at relative humidity above 85 % and temperature below 20 °C. Our findings revealed that aerosol-fog interaction is the fundamental driving force for explosive organic aerosol formation. It indicates that overlooking the co-condensation of organic vapors with water could significantly underestimate SOA and liquid water content in 3D models.

GENerator of reduced Organic Aerosol mechanism (GENOA v1.0): an automatic generation tool of semi-explicit mechanisms

Abstract. This paper describes the GENerator of reduced Organic Aerosol mechanism (GENOA) that produces semi-explicit mechanisms for simulating the formation and evolution of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) in air quality models. Using a series of predefined reduction strategies and evaluation criteria, GENOA trains and reduces SOA mechanisms from near-explicit chemical mechanisms (e.g., the Master Chemical Mechanism – MCM) under representative atmospheric conditions. As a consequence, these trained SOA mechanisms can preserve the accuracy of detailed gas-phase chemical mechanisms on SOA formation (e.g., molecular structures of crucial organic compounds, the effect of “non-ideality”, and the hydrophilic/hydrophobic partitioning of aerosols), with a size (in terms of reaction and species numbers) that is manageable for three-dimensional (3-D) aerosol modeling (e.g., regional chemical transport models). Applied to the degradation of sesquiterpenes (as β-caryophyllene) from MCM, GENOA builds a concise SOA mechanism (2 % of the MCM size) that consists of 23 reactions and 15 species, with 6 of them being condensable. The generated SOA mechanism has been evaluated regarding its ability to reproduce SOA concentrations under the varying atmospheric conditions encountered over Europe, with an average error lower than 3 %.

Chemical evolution of secondary organic aerosol tracers during high-PM2.5 episodes at a suburban site in Hong Kong over 4 months of continuous measurement

Abstract. Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) makes a sizable contribution to fine-particulate-matter (PM2.5) pollution, especially during high-PM episodes. Past studies of SOA evolution at the episode scale mainly rely on measurements of bulk SOA mass, with few studies probing individual SOA molecular tracers. In this study, we continuously monitored (at a bi-hourly resolution) SOA tracers specific to a few common volatile organic compound (VOC) precursors at a suburban site in Hong Kong for a 4-month period from the end of August to December 2020. The SOA molecules include tracers for SOA derived from biomass burning (BB) emissions, monoaromatics, naphthalene/methylnaphthalenes, and three biogenic VOCs (isoprene, monoterpene, and sesquiterpene). Generally, the SOA tracers showed regional characteristics for both anthropogenic and biogenic SOA as well as for the BB-derived SOA. This work focused on the seasonal variation and evolution characteristics of SOA tracers during 11 city-wide PM2.5 episodes, which are defined as periods with PM2.5 concentrations exceeding 35 µg m−3 at 3 or more of the 15 general air quality monitoring stations cross the city. Mass increment ratios (MIR), calculated as the ratio of the mass concentration prior to an episode to that during an episode, were examined for individual species during each episode. During most episodes, the SOA tracer concentrations were enhanced (i.e. MIR >1), and the maximum MIR values were in the range of 5.5–11.0 for SOA tracers of different precursors. Episodes on summer and fall days showed notably larger MIR values than those falling on winter days, indicating the higher importance of SOA to the formation of summer/fall PM2.5 episodes. Simultaneous monitoring of six tracers for isoprene SOA revealed the dominance of the low-NOx pathway in forming isoprene SOA in our study region. The multiple monoterpene SOA products suggested fresher SOA in winter, evidenced by the increased presence of the early-generation products. Thus, the current study has shown by example the precursor-specific SOA chemical evolution characteristics during PM2.5 episodes in different seasons. This study also suggests the necessity to apply high-time-resolution organic marker measurement at multiple sites in order to fully capture the spatial heterogeneity of haze pollution at the city scale.

Process-Level Modeling Can Simultaneously Explain Secondary Organic Aerosol Evolution in Chambers and Flow Reactors

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) data gathered in environmental chambers (ECs) have been used extensively to develop parameters to represent SOA formation and evolution. The EC-based parameters are usually constrained to less than one day of photochemical aging but extrapolated to predict SOA aging over much longer timescales in atmospheric models. Recently, SOA has been increasingly studied in oxidation flow reactors (OFRs) over aging timescales of one to multiple days. However, these OFR data have been rarely used to validate or update the EC-based parameters. The simultaneous use of EC and OFR data is challenging because the processes relevant to SOA formation and evolution proceed over very different timescales, and both reactor types exhibit distinct experimental artifacts. In this work, we show that a kinetic SOA chemistry and microphysics model that accounts for various processes, including wall losses, aerosol phase state, heterogeneous oxidation, oligomerization, and new particle formation, can simultaneously explain SOA evolution in EC and OFR experiments, using a single consistent set of SOA parameters. With α-pinene as an example, we first developed parameters by fitting the model output to the measured SOA mass concentration and oxygen-to-carbon (O:C) ratio from an EC experiment (<1 day of aging). We then used these parameters to simulate SOA formation in OFR experiments and found that the model overestimated SOA formation (by a factor of 3-16) over photochemical ages ranging from 0.4 to 13 days, when excluding the abovementioned processes. By comprehensively accounting for these processes, the model was able to explain the observed evolution in SOA mass, composition (i.e., O:C), and size distribution in the OFR experiments. This work suggests that EC and OFR SOA data can be modeled consistently, and a synergistic use of EC and OFR data can aid in developing more refined SOA parameters for use in atmospheric models.

Formation and Evolution of Catechol-Derived SOA Mass, Composition, Volatility, and Light Absorption

Phenolic compounds emitted from wildfires contribute to secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and brown carbon (BrC) upon oxidation initiated by hydroxyl (OH) and nitrate radicals (NO3). We conducted a set of laboratory chamber experiments to study catechol oxidation by OH and NO3 with a focus on the associated SOA formation and evolution under conditions relevant to fresh wildfire plumes. Oxidation products in both gas and particle phases as well as SOA volatility were measured using an iodide-adduct high-resolution time-of-flight chemical ionization mass spectrometer coupled with the filter inlet for gases and aerosols (FIGAERO-CIMS). Nitrocatechol (C6H5NO4) was the dominant particle-phase compound in both OH-initiated and NO3-initiated oxidation and was strongly associated with particle light absorption at 405 nm, consistent with BrC. Maximum SOA mass yields, ranging from 0.1 to 1.6 for the OH- and NO3-driven experiments, respectively, varied with the net formation of nitrocatechol. Gas–particle partitioning measurements implied the effective saturation vapor concentration, c*, of nitrocatechol is 12 μg m–3 for the OH-initiated experiment and 2.4 μg m–3 for the NO3-initiated experiments, both far lower than group contribution method estimates, which ranged from 1.8 × 102 to 8.5 × 108 μg m–3. In extended photochemical aging experiments, wall-loss-corrected photochemical lifetimes of BrC in the chamber were 17.4 ± 0.8 and 12.4 ± 0.1 h, while particulate nitrocatechol had lifetimes of 21 ± 8 and 6.9 ± 0.6 h for OH-initiated and NO3-initiated conditions, respectively. Implications for phenolic-derived SOA and BrC evolution in wildfire plumes are discussed.

Formation and evolution of secondary organic aerosols derived from urban-lifestyle sources: vehicle exhaust and cooking emissions

Abstract. Vehicle exhaust and cooking emissions are closely related to the daily life of city dwellers. Here, we defined the secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) derived from vehicle exhaust and cooking emissions as “urban-lifestyle SOAs” and simulated their formation using a Gothenburg potential aerosol mass reactor (Go:PAM). The vehicle exhaust and cooking emissions were separately simulated, and their samples were defined as “vehicle group” and “cooking group”, respectively. After samples had been aged under 0.3–5.5 d of equivalent photochemical age, these two urban-lifestyle SOAs showed markedly distinct features in the SOA mass growth potential, oxidation pathways, and mass spectra. The SOA/POA (primary organic aerosol) mass ratios of vehicle groups (107) were 44 times larger than those of cooking groups (2.38) at about 2 d of equivalent photochemical age, according to the measurement of scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS). A high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer was used to perform a deeper analysis. It revealed that organics from the vehicle may undergo the alcohol and/or peroxide and carboxylic acid oxidation pathway to produce abundant less and more oxidized oxygenated OAs (LO-OOAs and MO-OOAs), and only a few primary hydrocarbon-like organic aerosols (HOAs) remain unaged. In contrast, organics from cooking may undergo the alcohol and/or peroxide oxidation pathway to produce moderate LO-OOAs, and comparable primary cooking organic aerosols (COAs) remain unaged. Our findings provide an insight into atmospheric contributions and chemical evolutions for urban-lifestyle SOAs, which could greatly influence the air quality and health risk assessments in urban areas.

Diurnal and Seasonal Variations in the Phase State of Secondary Organic Aerosol Material over the Contiguous US Simulated in CMAQ

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) accounts for a substantial portion of atmospheric particulate matter. Phase state plays an important role in the formation and evolution of SOA, while current air quality models usually assume that SOA particles are homogeneous and well-mixed liquids. In this study, we simulate glass transition temperature (Tg) and particle viscosity of SOA based on organic molecular composition over the contiguous US in 2016 using the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model. Simulations show that oligomers from anthropogenic and biogenic SOA and acid-catalyzed isoprene SOA are large contributors to Tg of dry SOA, and the dominant species that regulates the dry Tg variation is dependent on location and season. At the surface, the Tg of dry SOA is higher in the western than in the eastern US, which is due to higher mass fractions of accretion products in the western US. Taking into account the water uptake by SOA, the estimated SOA viscosity shows a prominent geospatial gradient, which is nearly a mirror image of relative humidity. SOA viscosity exhibits a strong diel cycle, and the phase state tends to be more viscous in daytime. The seasonal variations in SOA viscosity are substantially smaller than the diurnal variations. Simulations for four diverse field sites show that Tg and SOA viscosity exhibit significant vertical variations that increase with the altitude. SOA in winter undergoes glass transition at lower altitude (∼3 km) than the other three seasons, and SOA occurs as a non-liquid phase at lower altitude at night than during the daytime. This suggests that chemical transport models may need to consider the bulk diffusion limitations in partitioning into viscous SOA in dry western areas of US and aloft in the humid eastern US as well as dry periods during the day to accurately predict SOA formation, size distribution dynamics, and subsequent impacts.

A core-shell box model for simulating viscosity dependent secondary organic aerosol (CSVA) and its application

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) plays a key role in air pollution and global climate change. However, the understanding and modelling of SOA properties and evolution are still limited. In this paper, we developed a novel kinetic Core-Shell box model for Viscosity dependent SOA simulation (CSVA), which includes explicit gas-phase reactions (MCM), homogeneous nucleation by H2SO4-NH3-H2O, viscosity dependent mass transfer between gas and particle phases (organic and aqueous phases) and particle-phase reactions. The gas-particle mass transfer is represented by chainlike reactions analogizing to electrical resistance. The CSVA model is verified and applied to chamber experiments of toluene oxidation systems. The monomers and dimers of SOA are determined by coupling the high-resolution Orbitrap mass spectra and MCM mechanism. The majority of dimers are confirmed to be peroxyhemiacetals formed by reactions of hydroperoxides with aldehydes in the particle phase. The results show that CSVA can well capture the following processes: (1) relative humidity (RH) dependent nucleation of the H2SO4-NH3-H2O system, (2) particle size-dependent hygroscopic growth of inorganics (e.g., NaCl and (NH4)2SO4) and organics (levoglucosan and SOA), (3) NOx dependent SOA formation, (4) viscosity-induced evolution of particle size distribution, and (5) effect of RH on SOA formation. In particular, our model reproduces the phenomenon that the evolution of SOA particle size distribution from a one-peak mode into a two-peak mode is due to viscosity.

The formation and evolution of secondary organic aerosol during summer in Xi'an: Aqueous phase processing in fog-rain days

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) is an important contributor to organic aerosol (OA), however, the model simulations of SOA concentrations and oxidation states remain significant uncertainties because of inadequate cognition of its formation and aging chemistry. In this study, SOA formation and evolution processes during summer in Xi'an were investigated, based on high-resolution online measurements of non-refractory PM2.5 (NR-PM2.5) species and OA source apportionment using positive matrix factorization. The results showed that the total SOA, including less oxidized-oxygenated OA (LO-OOA), more oxidized-oxygenated OA (MO-OOA), and aqueous-phase-processed oxygenated OA (aq-OOA), on average constituted 69% of OA, and 43% of NR-PM2.5, suggesting the high atmospheric oxidation capacity and the dominance of SOA during summer in Xi'an. Photochemical oxidation processes dominated the summertime SOA formation both during non-fog-rain days and fog-rain days, which were responsible for the formation of both LO-OOA and MO-OOA. Consistently, LO-OOA and MO-OOA in total contributed 59% to OA during non-fog-rain days and 56% to OA during fog-rain days, respectively. On the contrary, aq-OOA was mainly observed during fog-rain days, which increased dramatically from 2% of OA during non-fog-rain days to 19% of OA during fog-rain days with the mass concentration increasing accordingly from 0.3 μg m−3 to 2.5 μg m−3. Episodic analyses further highlighted the persistently high RH period with high aerosol liquid water content (ALWC) was the driving factor of aq-OOA formation, and high Ox condition could further enhance its formation. Meanwhile, air masses from east and southeast were much favorable for the formation of long-time fog-rain days, which facilitated aq-OOA production during summer in Xi'an.

Hourly measurements of organic molecular markers in urban Shanghai, China: Observation of enhanced formation of secondary organic aerosol during particulate matter episodic periods

Abstract Field campaigns rarely measure individual polar organic compounds online, leaving unexplored their potential in tracking the formation dynamics of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). In a three-week-long field campaign in urban Shanghai, we deployed a commercial Thermal desorption Aerosol Gas chromatograph system (TAG) that integrates sampling, in-situ derivatization, and thermal desorption gas chromatography-mass spectrometric analysis, producing hourly measurement of polar organics including a set of biogenic and anthropogenic SOA tracers. The abundance and variations of these SOA tracers were examined in relation to five PM2.5 episodes, varying from 4 to 64 h in duration, during the field campaign from 9 November to 3 December 2018. The episodes were associated with stagnant air parcels. In comparison with the non-episodic hours, the episodic hours showed distinct chemical characteristics of a large mass increment of nitrate (an average of 4.7 fold) and secondary organic compounds (~3–6.4 fold), exceeding those of primary pollutants (1.6–1.9 fold). These results clearly indicate the significant contributions of secondary inorganic and organic production processes to forming PM2.5 episodes. The SOA concentration estimated by the set of TAG-measured SOA tracers reached an average concentration of 2.6 μg/m3, accounting for a significant portion of OA in view of that the total organic matter (OM) in PM1 measured by an Aerosol Mass Spectrometer was 7.9 μg/m3. Among them the SOA attributed to monoaromatic compounds (e.g., toluene) accounted for a noticeable portion of the total OM, implying that control strategies targeting local anthropogenic emissions would be effective in reducing the severity of episodic PM pollution. Examining the ratio of two monoterpene-derived SOA products, we found evidence of less-aged SOA in urban Shanghai, and this result was collaborated by the O/C value (0.4) of bulk OA. This work demonstrates hourly SOA tracer measurements by TAG are uniquely specific on identification of major SOA precursors for episodic events and observing the evolution of SOA.

Chemical characterization of secondary organic aerosol at a rural site in the southeastern US: insights from simultaneous high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS) and FIGAERO chemical ionization mass spectrometer (CIMS) measurements

Abstract. The formation and evolution of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) were investigated at Yorkville, GA, in late summer (mid-August to mid-October 2016). The organic aerosol (OA) composition was measured using two online mass spectrometry instruments, the high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS) and the Filter Inlet for Gases and AEROsols coupled to a high-resolution time-of-flight iodide-adduct chemical ionization mass spectrometer (FIGAERO-CIMS). Through analysis of speciated organics data from FIGAERO-CIMS and factorization analysis of data obtained from both instruments, we observed notable SOA formation from isoprene and monoterpenes during both day and night. Specifically, in addition to isoprene epoxydiol (IEPOX) uptake, we identified isoprene SOA formation from non-IEPOX pathways and isoprene organic nitrate formation via photooxidation in the presence of NOx and nitrate radical oxidation. Monoterpenes were found to be the most important SOA precursors at night. We observed significant contributions from highly oxidized acid-like compounds to the aged OA factor from FIGAERO-CIMS. Taken together, our results showed that FIGAERO-CIMS measurements are highly complementary to the extensively used AMS factorization analysis, and together they provide more comprehensive insights into OA sources and composition.

Aqueous-Phase Decomposition of Isoprene Hydroxy Hydroperoxide and Hydroxyl Radical Formation by Fenton-like Reactions with Iron Ions.

Isoprene hydroxy hydroperoxides (ISOPOOH) formed by the photooxidation of isoprene under low-NO conditions play an important role in the formation and evolution of secondary organic aerosols, yet multiphase processes of ISOPOOH are poorly understood. By applying electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, we observe that ISOPOOH undergoes aqueous-phase decomposition upon interacting with Fe(II) ions to form OH and organic radicals at room temperature. To reproduce the measured dependence of OH formation on the Fe concentrations by kinetic modeling, we postulate that Fe(II) ions react with ISOPOOH via Fenton-like reactions to form OH radicals with a rate constant of 7.3 × 10-18 cm3 s-1. At low concentrations, oxalate forms monocomplexes with Fe(II) ions, which can promote OH formation by ISOPOOH. However, at high concentrations, oxalate scavenges OH radicals, thereby lowering aqueous OH concentrations. These findings provide new insight for the atmospheric fate of ISOPOOH and reactive oxygen species generation in the aqueous phase.
