A Parameterized Neutrino Emission Model to Study Mass Ejection in Failed Core-collapse Supernovae

Some massive stars end their lives as failed core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) and become black holes (BHs). Although in this class of phenomena the stalled supernova (SN) shock is not revived, the outer stellar envelope can still be partially ejected. This occurs because the hydrodynamic equilibrium of the star is disrupted by the gravitational mass loss of the protoneutron star (PNS) due to neutrino emission. We develop a simple parameterized model that emulates PNS evolution and its neutrino emission and use it to simulate failed CCSNe in spherical symmetry for a wide range of progenitor stars. Our model allows us to study mass ejection of failed CCSNe where the PNS collapses into a BH within ∼100 ms and up to ∼106 s. We perform failed CCSNe simulations for 262 different pre-SN progenitors and determine how the energy and mass of the ejecta depend on progenitor properties and the equation of state (EOS) of dense matter. In the case of a future failed CCSN observation, the trends obtained in our simulations can be used to place constraints on the pre-SN progenitor characteristics, the EOS, and on PNS properties at BH formation time.

Proto-Neutron Star Matter

In this paper, we explore the properties of proto-neutron star matter. The relativistic finite-temperature Green function formalism is used to derive the equations which determine the properties of such matter. The calculations are performed for the relativistic non-linear mean-filed theory, where different combinations of lepton number and entropy have been investigated. All particles of the baryon octet as well as all electrically charged states of the Δ isobar have been included in the calculations. The presence of all these particles is shown to be extremely temperature (entropy) dependent, which should have important consequences for the evolution of proto-neutron stars to neutron stars as well as the behavior of neutron stars in compact star mergers.

Proto-neutron star evolution with improved charged-current neutrino–nucleon interactions

ABSTRACT We perform simulations of the Kelvin–Helmholtz cooling phase of proto-neutron stars with a new numerical code in spherical symmetry and using the quasi-static approximation. We use for the first time the full set of charged-current neutrino–nucleon reactions, including neutron decay and modified Urca processes, together with the energy-dependent numerical representation for the inclusion of nuclear correlations with random phase approximation. Moreover, convective motions are taken into account within the mixing length theory. As we vary the assumptions for computing neutrino–nucleon reaction rates, we show that the dominant effect on the cooling time-scale, neutrino signal, and composition of the neutrino-driven wind comes from the inclusion of convective motion. Computation of nuclear correlations within the random phase approximation, as compared to mean field approach, has a relatively small impact.

Equations of state for hot neutron stars

We review the equation of state (EoS) models covering a large range of temperatures, baryon number densities and electron fractions presently available on the \textsc{CompOSE} database. These models are intended to be directly usable within numerical simulations of core-collapse supernovae, binary neutron star mergers and proto-neutron star evolution. We discuss their compliance with existing constraints from astrophysical observations and nuclear data. For a selection of purely nucleonic models in reasonable agreement with the above constraints, after discussing the properties of cold matter, we review thermal properties for thermodynamic conditions relevant for core-collapse supernovae and binary neutron star mergers. We find that the latter are strongly influenced by the density dependence of the nucleon effective mass. The selected bunch of models is used to investigate the EoS dependence of hot star properties, where entropy per baryon and electron fraction profiles are inspired from proto-neutron star evolution. The $\Gamma$-law analytical thermal EoS used in many simulations is found not to describe well these thermal properties of the EoS. However, it may offer a fair description of the structure of hot stars whenever thermal effects on the baryonic part are small, as shown here for proto-neutron stars starting from several seconds after bounce.

Characteristic time variability of gravitational-wave and neutrino signals from three-dimensional simulations of non-rotating and rapidly rotating stellar core collapse

ABSTRACT We present results from full general relativistic 3D hydrodynamics simulations of stellar core collapse of a 70 M⊙ star with spectral neutrino transport. To investigate the impact of rotation on non-axisymmetric instabilities, we compute three models by parametrically changing the initial strength of rotation. The most rapidly rotating model exhibits a transient development of the low-T/|W| instability with one-armed spiral flow at the early post-bounce phase. Subsequently, the two-armed spiral flow appears, which persists during the simulation time. The moderately rotating model also shows the growth of the low-T/|W| instability, but only with the two-armed spiral flow. In the non-rotating model, a vigorous activity of the standing accretion-shock instability (SASI) is only observed. The SASI is first dominated by the sloshing mode, which is followed by the spiral SASI until the black hole (BH) formation. We present a spectrogram analysis of the gravitational waves (GWs) and neutrinos, focusing on the time correlation. Our results show that characteristic time modulations in the GW and neutrino signals can be linked to the growth of the non-axisymmetric instabilities. We find that the degree of the protoneutron star (PNS) deformation, depending upon which modes of the non-axisymmetric instabilities develop, predominantly affects the characteristic frequencies of the correlated GW and neutrino signals. We point out that these signals would be simultaneously detectable by the current-generation detectors up to ∼10 kpc. Our findings suggest that the joint observation of GWs and neutrinos is indispensable for extracting information on the PNS evolution preceding the BH formation.

Statistical treatment of nuclear clusters in the continuum

The evaluation of the sub-saturation nuclear equation of state at finite temperature requires a proper state counting of the internal partition sum of nuclei which are immersed in the background of their continuum states. This classical statistical problem is addressed within the self-consistent mean-field approximation, which naturally accounts for isospin and effective mass effects in the nuclear density of states. The nuclear free energy is decomposed into bulk and surface terms, allowing a simple analytical prescription for the subtraction of gas states from the nuclear partition sum, that avoids double counting of unbound single particle states. We show that this correction leads to a sizeable effect in the composition of matter at high temperature and low proton fractions, such as it is formed in supernova collapse, early proto-neutron star evolution, as well as laboratory experiments. Specifically, the energy stored in the internal nuclear degrees of freedom is reduced, as well as the mass fraction of heavy clusters in the statistical equilibrium. The gas subtraction prescription is compared to different phenomenological methods proposed in the literature, based on a high energy truncation of the partition sum. We show that none of these methods satisfactorily reproduces the gas subtracted level density, if the temperature overcomes ~4 MeV.

Equation of State and Progenitor Dependence of Stellar-mass Black Hole Formation

Abstract The core collapse of a massive star results in the formation of a proto-neutron star (PNS). If enough material is accreted onto a PNS, it will become gravitationally unstable and further collapse into a black hole (BH). We perform a systematic study of failing core-collapse supernovae in spherical symmetry for a wide range of pre-supernova progenitor stars and equations of state (EOSs) of nuclear matter. We analyze how variations in progenitor structure and the EOS of dense matter above nuclear saturation density affect the PNS evolution and subsequent BH formation. Comparisons of core collapse for a given progenitor star and different EOSs show that the path traced by the PNS in mass-specific entropy phase space is well correlated with the progenitor compactness and is almost EOS independent, apart from the final end point. Furthermore, BH formation occurs, to a very good approximation, soon after the PNS overcomes the maximum gravitational mass supported by a hot NS with constant specific entropy equal to . These results show a path to constraining the temperature dependence of the EOS through the detection of neutrinos from a failed galactic supernova.

Neutrino signal from proto-neutron star evolution: Effects of opacities from charged-current–neutrino interactions and inverse neutron decay

We investigate the impact of charged current neutrino processes on the formation and evolution of neutrino spectra during the deleptonization of proto-neutron stars. To this end we develop the full kinematics of these reaction rates consistent with the nuclear equation of state, including weak magnetism contributions. This allows us to systematically study the impact of inelastic contributions and weak magnetism on the $\nu_e$ and $\bar\nu_e$ luminosities and average energies. Furthermore, we explore the role of the inverse neutron decay, also known as the direct Urca process, on the emitted spectra of $\bar\nu_e$. This process is commonly considered in the cooling scenario of cold neutron stars but has so far been neglected in the evolution of hot proto-neutron stars. We find that the inverse neutron decay becomes the dominating opacity source for low-energy $\bar\nu_e$. Accurate three-flavor Boltzmann neutrino transport enables us to relate the magnitude of neutrino fluxes and spectra to details of the treatment of weak processes. This allows us to quantify the corresponding impact on the conditions relevant for the nucleosynthesis in the neutrino-driven wind, which is ejected from the proto-neutron star surface during the deleptonization phase.

Hot quark matter and (proto-) neutron stars

In part one of this paper, we use a non-local extension of the 3-flavor Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, which takes into account flavor-mixing, momentum dependent quark masses, and vector interactions among quarks, to investigate the possible existence of a spinodal region (determined by the vanishing of the speed of sound) in the QCD phase diagram and determine the temperature and chemical potential of the critical end point. In part two of the paper, we investigate the quark-hadron composition of baryonic matter at zero as well as non-zero temperature. This is of great topical interest for the analysis and interpretation of neutron star merger events such as GW170817. With this in mind, we determine the composition of proto-neutron star matter for entropies and lepton fractions that are typical of such matter. These compositions are used to delineate the evolution of proto-neutron stars to neutron stars in the baryon-mass versus gravitational-mass diagram. The hot stellar models turn out to contain significant fractions of hyperons and $\Delta$-isobars but no deconfined quarks. The latter, are found to exist only in cold neutron stars.

The impact of different neutrino transport methods on multidimensional core-collapse supernova simulations

Neutrinos play a crucial role in the core-collapse supernova (CCSN) explosion mechanism. The requirement of accurately calculating the transport of neutrinos makes simulations of the CCSN mechanism extremely challenging and computationally expensive. Historically, this stiff challenge has been met by making approximations to the full transport equation. In this work, we compare CCSN simulations in one- and two-dimensions with three approximate neutrino transport schemes, each implemented in the FLASH simulation framework. We compare a two-moment M1 scheme with an analytic closure (M1), the isotropic diffusion source approximation (IDSA), and the advanced spectral leakage method. We identify and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each scheme. For each approximate transport scheme, we use identical grid setups, hydrodynamics, and gravity solvers to investigate the transport effects on supernova shock dynamics and neutrino quantities. We find that the transport scheme has a small effect on the evolution of protoneutron star (PNS) radius, PNS mass, and the mass accretion rate. The neutrino luminosities, mean energies, and shock radii have a ∼10%–20% quantitative difference but the overall qualitative trends are fairly consistent between all three approximations. We find larger differences in the gain region properties, including the gain region mass and the net heating rate in the gain region, as well as the strength of PNS convection in the core. We investigate the progenitor, nuclear equation of state, and stochastic perturbation dependence of our simulations and find similar magnitudes of impact on key quantities. We also compare the computational expense of the various approximations.

Evolution of the surface magnetic field of rotating proto-neutron stars

We study the evolution of the field on the surface of proto-neutron stars in the immediate aftermath of stellar core collapse by analyzing the results of self-consistent, axisymmetric simulations of the cores of rapidly rotating high-mass stars. To this end, we compare the field topology and the angular spectra of the poloidal and toroidal field components over a time of about one seconds for cores. Both components are characterized by a complex geometry with high power at intermediate angular scales. The structure is mostly the result of the accretion of magnetic flux embedded in the matter falling through the turbulent post-shock layer onto the PNS. Our results may help to guide further studies of the long-term magneto-thermal evolution of proto-neutron stars. We find that the accretion of stellar progenitor layers endowed with low or null magnetization bury the magnetic field on the PNS surface very effectively.

Probing mass-radius relation of protoneutron stars from gravitational-wave asteroseismology

The gravitational-wave (GW) asteroseismology is a powerful technique for extracting interior information of compact objects. In this work, we focus on spacetime modes, the so-called $w$-modes, of GWs emitted from a proto-neutron star (PNS) in the postbounce phase of core-collapse supernovae. Using results from recent three-dimensional supernova models, we study how to infer the properties of the PNS based on a quasi-normal mode analysis in the context of the GW asteroseismology. We find that the $w_1$-mode frequency multiplied by the PNS radius is expressed as a linear function with respect to the ratio of the PNS mass to the PNS radius. This relation is insensitive to the nuclear equation of state (EOS) employed in this work. Combining with another universal relation of the $f$-mode oscillations, we point out that the time dependent mass-radius relation of the PNS can be obtained by observing both the $f$- and $w_1$-mode GWs simultaneously. Our results suggest that the simultaneous detection of the two modes could provide a new probe into finite-temperature nuclear EOS that predominantly determines the PNS evolution.

Probing axions with the neutrino signal from the next Galactic supernova

We study the impact of axion emission in simulations of massive star explosions, as an additional source of energy loss complementary to the standard neutrino emission. The inclusion of this channel shortens the cooling time of the nascent protoneutron star and hence the duration of the neutrino signal. We treat the axion-matter coupling strength as a free parameter to study its impact on the protoneutron star evolution as well as on the neutrino signal. We furthermore analyze the observability of the enhanced cooling in current and next-generation underground neutrino detectors, showing that values of the axion mass $m_a \gtrsim 8 \times 10^{-3}$ eV can be probed. Therefore a galactic supernova neutrino observation would provide a valuable possibility to probe axion masses in a range within reach of the planned helioscope experiment, the International Axion Observatory (IAXO).

Creation of Dirac neutrinos in a dense medium with a time-dependent effective potential

We consider Dirac neutrinos interacting with background fermions in the frame of the standard model. We demonstrate that a time-dependent effective potential is quite possible in a protoneutron star (PNS) at certain stages of its evolution. For the first time, we formulate a nonperturbative treatment of neutrino processes in a matter with arbitrary time-dependent effective potential. Using linearly growing effective potential, we study the typical case of a slowly varying matter interaction potential. We calculate differential mean numbers of $\nu \bar{\nu}$ pairs created from the vacuum by this potential and find that they crucially depend on the magnitude of masses of the lightest neutrino eigenstate. These distributions uniformly span up to $\sim 10$ eV energies for muon and tau neutrinos created in PNS core due to the compression just before the hydrodynamic bounce and up to $\sim 0.1$ eV energies for all three active neutrino flavors created in the neutronization. Considering different stages of the PNS evolution, we derive constraints on neutrino masses, $m_{\nu}\lesssim (10^{-8}-10^{-7})$ eV corresponding to the nonvanishing $\nu \bar{\nu}$ pairs flux produced by this mechanism. We show that one can distinguish such coherent flux from chaotic fluxes of any other origin. Part of these neutrinos, depending on the flavor and helicity, are bounded in the PNS, while antineutrinos of any flavor escape the PNS. If the created pairs are $\nu_{e}\bar{\nu}_{e}$, then a part of the corresponding neutrinos also escape the PNS. The detection of $\nu $ and $\bar{\nu}$ with such low energies is beyond current experimental techniques.

The neutrino and anti-neutrino absorption sections in the wind of proto-neutron stars

The neutrino and anti-neutrino absorption sections are important parameters for the evolution of proto-neutron stars. In this paper, we improve the method of evaluating the neutrino and anti-neutrino absorption sections in the high temperature environments of proto-neutron stars, considering the energy-momentum conservation, the magnetic field and the thermal motion effects of baryons (neutrons or protons), and obtain the more accurate neutrino and anti-neutrino absorption sections. These results may play an important role for the further studies of neutrino heating rate in the wind of proto-neutron stars, the opacity in neutrino transportation process and the interpretation of the observed phenomena associated with neutron stars.

Evolution of proto-neutron stars with hadron–quark phase transition

We investigate the consequences of the quark deconfinement phase transition on the evolution of proto-neutron stars. Assuming a first order phase transition, we calculate the nucleation time due to thermal and quantum nucleation mechanisms. We introduce the concepts of critical mass Mcr and limiting conversion temperature for proto-hadronic stars. We show that proto-hadronic stars with a mass M < Mcr could survive the early stages of their evolution without decaying to quark stars.

Evolution of proto-neutron stars with the hadron–quark phase transition

The Poyakov–Nambu–Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model was developed recently, which includes both the chiral dynamics and (de)confinement effect and gives a good description of lattice QCD data. In this study we use the PNJL model to describe the quark phase, and first use it to study the evolution of proto-neutron star (PNS) with a hadron–quark phase transition. Along the line of a PNS evolution, we take several snapshots of PNS profiles, presenting the fractions of different species, the equations of state (EOS), and the mass–radius relations at different stages. The calculation shows the mixed phase may exist during the whole evolving process, and the onset density of quark phase decreases with the radiation of neutrinos in the heating stage. In the cooling stage, the EOS of the mixed phase softens and the center density increases. In this process a part of nuclear matter transforms to quark matter, which may lead to a PNS collapsing into a black hole.

Effects of quark matter nucleation on the evolution of proto-neutron stars

(Abridged) A phase of strong interacting matter with deconfined quarks is expected in the core of massive neutron stars. If this deconfinement phase transition is of the first order then it will be triggered by the nucleation of a critical size drop of the stable quark phase in the metastable hadronic phase. Within these circumstances it has been shown that cold pure hadronic compact stars above a threshold value of their gravitational mass are metastable with respect to the "decay" to quark stars (compact stars made at least in part of quark matter). This stellar conversion process liberates a huge amount of energy, and it could be the energy source of some of the long GRBs. The main goal of the present work is to establish whether a newborn hadronic star (proto-hadronic star) could survive the early stages of its evolution without "decaying" to a quark star. To this aim, we study the nucleation process of quark matter in hot beta-stable hadronic matter, with and without trapped neutrinos. We calculate and compare the nucleation rate and the nucleation time due to thermal and quantum nucleation mechanisms. We compute the crossover temperature above which thermal nucleation dominates the finite temperature quantum nucleation mechanism. We next discuss the consequences of quark matter nucleation for the physics and the evolution of proto-neutron stars. We introduce the new concept of limiting conversion temperature and critical mass M_cr for proto-hadronic stars, and we show that proto-hadronic stars with a mass M < M_cr could survive the early stages of their evolution without decaying to a quark star. We extend the concept of maximum mass of a "neutron star" with respect to the classical one introduced by Oppenheimer & Volkoff to account for the existence of two distinct families of compact stars (hadronic stars and quark stars) as predicted by the present scenario.

Quark–hadron mixed phases in protoneutron stars

We consider the possible formation of the quark–hadron mixed phase in protoneutron stars. We discuss two cases. The first one, corresponding to a vanishingly small value of the surface tension of quark matter, is the well-known mixed phase in which the global electric charge neutrality condition is imposed. In turn, this produces a non-constant pressure mixed phase. In the second case, corresponding to very large values of the surface tension, the charge neutrality condition holds only locally. However, the existence in protoneutron star matter of an additional globally conserved charge, the lepton number, allows for a new type of non-constant pressure mixed phase. We discuss the properties of the new mixed phase and the possible effects of its formation during the evolution of protoneutron stars.
