Goldberg's Genetic and Metabolic Eye Diseases

The second edition of this book builds handsomely on the precocious nature of the first edition. As the eye is frequently involved in genetic and metabolic diseases, rapid advances in these fields would suggest the eventual maturation of this textbook from a collected series of essays to a sturdy reference tome; the second edition is a substantial step in this direction. The book is divided into 20 chapters, with authors including ophthalmologists, geneticists, pediatricians, biochemists, and dermatologists. The chapters have the structure of review articles, and successful attempts have been made to minimize the repetition of material, which is often the hallmark of multiauthored texts. The first chapter, Fundamentals of Genetics, by editor Dr Renie, is an articulate and quite readable review of genetic principles, which when taken in tandem with chapter 8, Human Chromosomal Disorders and the Eye, by Gieser et al, forms an excellent review on this subject.

On Improving the Public Health

PERHAPS the most promising potential for improving the public health resides in what people can be motivated to do for themselves. To assist patients to become more mature requires some tempering of medical omnipotence. The process resembles somewhat the rearing of children, where their eventual maturity depends mainly on the quality of parenting. The traditional role of the physician as teacher requires nurture if it is to be expected that patients will thrive and grow. This was the course embarked on by Thomas Jefferson when he established the study of medicine at the University of Virginia, where one of the goals was that every Virginian learn the care of his own health. For Jefferson, man certainly was not defined by his illness. A free man with growth potential in all areas was considered by him bound to live as constructively as he could under any and all circumstances, including illness

Abstract Analytical chemistry in Australia is alive, but its current development can be likened to that of a young and vigorous infant who needs assured supplies of food, a favourable environment and some sound guidance for growth and eventual maturity. That analytical chemistry exists in Australia and is healthy, has occurred despite the existence of most of the 19 universities in Australia! Sweden, with a population of 8.5 million, has 10 chairs in analytical chemistry in 5 main universities and analytical chemistry has been an acknowledged branch of chemistry at Swedish universities since 19601. Australia, with a population of 13.5 million and reasonably comparable standard of living and industrial development, has only one chair in analytical chemistry (at The University of New South Wales) in its 19 universities. Physiological characterization of temperature-sensitive mutants of mengovirus

Twenty-four temperature-sensitive mutants of mengovirus were characterized physiologically with respect to phenotype. The mutants were separated into four classes on the basis of viral RNA synthesis. L-67-S cells infected with five of the mutants synthesized little viral RNA at 39.5 C. These mutants are designated RNA-. One mutant is designated RNA* since its RNA synthesis is altered at both 39.5 and 31.5 C. The other mutants were divided into two groups, RNA plus or minus (25 TO 49% of wild-type RNA synthesis) and RNA plus (50 to 100% of wild-type RNA synthesis). The time of expression of the mutation in the RNA- mutants was estimated from the results of reciprocal temperature-shift experiments. The mutatation in ts12 appears to be expressed at the time RNA synthesis normally begins. The defect in three of the mutants was expressed 1 to 2 h before RNA synthesis is normally detectable. Protein synthesis is required before RNA synthesis begins when the cells are shifted from 39.5 to 31.5 C. The RNA polymerase synthesized by cells infected with these RNA- mutants at 31.5 C was stable and fully active when assayed at 39.5 C in vitro. The sedimentation profiles of the viral RNA synthesized by cells infected with RNA plus and RNA plus or minus mutants are similar to wild-type profiles with the exception of ts148. Cells infected with this RNA plus or minus mutant synthesize RNA that sediments in a sucrose gradient like replicative-intermediate RNA, but little mature viral RNA is evident. The results of step-up experiments indicate that the temperature-sensitive period for the majority of the RNA plus and RNA plus and minus mutants extends through most of the replicative cycle. The temperature-sensitive defect of four of the mutants, however, was expressed in the first hour, suggesting that some undefined early function is required for the eventual maturation of mengovirus. The virions of three of the RNA- mutants were more thermolabile than wild-type virions. Five of the RNA plus and RNA plus or minus mutants were also thermolabile. Genetic complementation at a significant level was not detectable in mixed infections of the mutants described.

GERMINATION ECOLOGY OF PHACELIA DUBIA VAR. DUBIA IN TENNESSEE GLADES

The germination characteristics of a population of the winter annual Phacelia dubia (L.) Trel. var. dubia from the middle Tennessee cedar glades were investigated in an attempt to define the factor(s) regulating germination in nature. Factors considered were changes in physiological response of the seeds (after‐ripening), temperature, age, light and darkness, and soil moisture. At seed dispersal (late May to early June), approximately 50 % of the seeds were non‐dormant but, would germinate only at low temperatures (10–15 C). As the seeds aged from June to September, there was an increase in rate and total percent of germination at 10, 15, and 20 C, and the maximum temperature for germination increased to 25 C. Little or no germination occurred at the June, July, and August temperatures in 0‐ to 2‐month‐old seeds, even in seeds on soil that was kept continuously moist during this 3‐month period. At the September, October, and November temperatures 3‐ to 5‐month‐old seeds germinated to high percentages. In all experiments seeds germinated better at a 14‐hr photoperiod than in constant darkness. Inability of 0‐ to 2‐month‐old seeds to germinate at high summer temperatures allows P. dubia dubia to pass the dry summer in the seed stage, while increase in optimum and maximum temperatures for germination during the summer permits seeds to germinate in late summer and early fall when conditions are favorable for seedling survival and eventual maturation.

The Place of the Performance Area in Training High School Music Teachers

IN RECENT YEARS a tendency of some music educators to emphasize participation as such rather than perfection in performance has caused alarm among others, and particularly many directors of public school and college bands and orchestras. The new am proach, say its advocates, has caused needless alarm because one of the major objectives of the music program still remains that of producing performing groups of a high degree of excellence. Their argument continues that performing groups composed of those students with above average interest and ability represent a natural out-growth of the program and that when the program reaches its eventual maturity, performance will be on a higher level than ever before in the history of American schools. The dissenters, however, point to the general lowering of performance standards that seems evident throughout the country and place at least a portion of the blame on the tendency to make the music program an experimental medium through which attempts at socialization, guidance, and other services of the educational program have tended to minimize performance standards in the public schools.
