Effects of Evaporative Cooling Air Conditioning on Classroom Pollutants and Thermal Environment.

Indoor particles and carbon dioxide concentration are major indices to evaluate indoor air quality. Based on the two-dimensional filler sieving model of the direct evaporative cooling segment, the porous media model was used for the simulation of the water filler section, the filtering efficiency of particle was simulated by adjusting the water drenching density and airflow velocity in different operating conditions. The three-dimensional classroom model used to change the exhaust outlet position and control the use of air conditioners simulated the indoor thermal environment and the changes in pollutant concentration. The Euler method and Lagrangian method were used to analyze the indoor flow field and particle sieving in the direct evaporation section, respectively. Conclusions show that in the application of evaporative cooling and stratum ventilation air conditioning system in classroom, the position of the exhaust port affects the concentration of carbon dioxide in the student’s breathing area. The water filler section can effectively reduce the concentration of particle and carbon dioxide supplied indoors. The filtration efficiency of particle in outdoor air passing through the direct evaporative cooling section based on diffusion, inertial collision, and interception is affected by the combined effect of particle size, onward wind speed, and water spray density. The filtration efficiency of particle increases as the density of the spray water increases. With the increase of head-on wind speed, the filtration efficiency of coarse particulate matter is higher than that of fine particulate matter. The research results help policy makers decide whether to install evaporative cooling air conditioning in schools and determine which exhaust outlet positions are most effective in improving indoor air quality.

Experimental study of dew point evaporative cooling air-conditioning unit by inner loop for data-centers buildings

According to the climate characteristics, a new dew point evaporative cooling air conditioning unit was design and analysis. Through take return air of the data-center into the dew point evaporative cooling air conditioning unit, then it in dry channel was cooled by wording air come from fresh air at wet channel. The work performance of the unit was test at different outdoor climate conditions of refrigeration performance parameters, and take a data-center project of Lanzhou as an example, the potential of energy saving and economic were analysis. Result showed the energy saving effect was significant and economic recovery within 1.5 years.

Optimization of Water Consumption in Hybrid Evaporative Cooling Air Conditioning Systems for Data Center Cooling Applications

ABSTRACTIn the light of its potential to reduce energy consumption when coupled to the condenser of existing vapor compression systems, evaporative cooling technology still faces questions relating to its water consumption pattern and the effect of water quality on its performance. This paper presents an experimental investigation of the water consumption characteristics in a split air-conditioning system employing evaporative precooling of air flowing over the condenser coils. The effect of the cooling pad thickness on the coefficient of performance of the system is investigated by varying the pad thickness from 5 to 15 cm in step size of 5 cm. Condition of the exit air from the pad shows that evaporative cooling can be employed as a standalone method for cooling of data centers, with adequate humidity control systems in place. Results obtained on water consumption shows that the volume of water consumed does not increase proportionally with time, rather it increases by a factor of 1.8, 2.5, and 3.2, for 2, 3, and 4 hours of operation respectively, relative to 1hour of operation. Two parameters; salinity and turbidity were used to study the effect of water quality on the evaporative cooling process. Additionally, a method of optimizing the pump operation is introduced in this paper. Running the pump intermittently could cut the energy consumed by the water pump in such a hybrid system by up to 20%.

Energy Saving Potential of Hybrid Liquid Desiccant and Evaporative Cooling Air-conditioning System in Hong Kong

Abstract The hybrid liquid desiccant dehumidification and evaporative cooling system, short for LDD-EC system, is regarded as a promising energy-saving air-conditioning (A/C) scheme for hot and humid regions. Unlike most previous reported LDD-EC system based on traditional indirect evaporative cooler (IEC) and 100% fresh air system, the LDD-EC system with partial circulation air was explored by fully making use of dry return air from air-conditioned space. The regenerative indirect evaporative cooler (RIEC) is used to sensibly cool the return air. The outdoor fresh air is firstly dehumidified in the LDD unit to have the latent heat removed, and then further cooled by RIEC. The LDD model, EC model and space model were established separately to facilitate the hybrid system simulation under the typical hot and humid condition in Hong Kong. The energy saving potential of the proposed system is quantitatively evaluated with respect to the conventional vapor compression A/C system. The results show an attractive energy saving ratio of 23.5% under Hong Kong weather condition. The energy saving ratio increases to 70% if the waste heat could be utilized.

Energy Performance of Solar Assisted Desiccant Enhanced Evaporative Cooling Air conditioning System

The desiccant enhanced evaporative cooling system is proposed as a promising energy-saving air-conditioning (A/C) scheme. It consists of hybrid liquid desiccant dehumidifier and indirect evaporative cooler. The hot and humid air is firstly dehumidified by liquid desiccant dehumidifier (LDD) and then sensibly cooled by regenerative indirect evaporative cooler (RIEC). The LDD-RIEC system operates without electricity-intensive compressor but with low-power-consumption solution pumps and water pumps. The heat captured by the solar collector is used for regenerating the desiccant solution. The solar collector model, LDD model and RIEC model were established separately to facilitate the hybrid system simulation in a closed-loop. The influence of solar collector area is analyzed. The energy saving potential of the proposed system is quantitatively evaluated with respect to the mechanical vapor compressor refrigeration (MVCR) system. The results show that both the moisture remove rate and cooling capacity improves with the increase of solar collector area. The LDD-RIEC A/C system saves 47% energy consumption compared with MVCR system in Hong Kong summer days.

More than just a Green Façade: Vertical Gardens as Active Air Conditioning Units

This paper explores the potential of a vertical garden to function as an active evaporative cooling air conditioning unit. It builds on previous work by Davis, Ramirez and Vallejo [1]. This study shows the results of a full scale, building incorporated vertical garden that measured 1.5 m wide by 2.8 m high. Air flowed behind the garden substrate, where it was cooled and humidified as it flowed down the back of the garden through its contact with the humid surface. The experimental results were compared to the mathematical model developed by Davis and Hirmer [2]. Overall, it was suspected that variations in ambient temperatures during the measurements taking process had a major influence on the results. In taking the data considered most reliable into account however, the results of the mathematical model end experimental data were within 0.44°C. The results indicate that such gardens show great promise for building climate control, but where further research is needed in order to mitigate the influence of fluctuations in ambient temperatures.

Research Progress of Liquid Desiccant Evaporative Cooling Air Conditioning System

Evaporative cooling technology is a refrigeration technology by water evaporating endothermic, with zero-pollution, environmental-friendly, energy saving, and other advantages, which makes it widely used. Nevertheless, due to its working characteristic, the application of evaporative cooling technology is limited, particularly in some areas with high humidity. Using the liquid desiccant dehumidification and evaporative cooling technology leads to a solution, named liquid desiccant evaporative cooling air conditioning system extends the application of evaporative cooling technology. This article on liquid desiccant evaporative cooling system provides a brief overview about research status, full usage of the low grade thermal energy, the practical application and new development of the system.
