The aim of the study was to compare the surface roughness and microhardness of bulk-fill composite and nanohybrid composite resin after exposure to three different beverages at different time intervals. In this study, 60 composite discs each for bulk fill and nanohybrid, of dimensions 10 mm × 2 mm were made. Both composites were randomly divided into four subgroups, i.e., 15 samples each for artificial saliva, tea, coffee, and soft drinks which were further subdivided into five samples for three time intervals. Composite resin discs were immersed in beverages for 4 min in 24 h for 7, 15, and 30 days. All samples were evaluated for surface roughness and microhardness before and after immersion. Both the composites showed a significant increase in surface roughness in all the beverages with maximum change in surface roughness observed in nanohybrid composite resin immersed in soft drinks. Furthermore, the microhardness of both the composites was decreased significantly in all beverages with maximum change in microhardness observed in nanohybrid composite resin immersed in soft drinks. Bulk-fill composite resin has better resistance to surface roughness and higher microhardness as compared to nanohybrid. Furthermore, acidic beverages highly affect the physical properties of both composite resins for longer periods.

LAMININ 332 FUNCTIONALIZED SURFACE IMPROVE IMPLANT ROUGHNESS AND ORAL KERATINOCYTE BIOACTIVITY

ObjectiveThe biological seal (BS) at the implant-tissue interface is essential for the success of dental implants (DIs), and the absence of a proper BS can lead to peri-implantitis. The basement membrane (BM) and junctional epithelium are critical for sealing the peri-implant mucosa, and laminin 332 is an important protein in binding the epithelium to the implant surface. The aim of this study was to evaluate the response of oral keratinocytes to titanium dental implant surfaces biofunctionalized with laminin 332. DesignThe dental implant surface was treated with a piranha solution to create hydroxyl (OH) groups, facilitating biofunctionalization with laminin 332. The modified surface underwent scanning electron microscopy, surface roughness evaluation, and chemical composition analysis. Human keratinocytes from the Cal-27 line were then cultured on the modified implants for 24 and 48 hours to assess viability, morphology, cytokine secretion, and mRNA expression of tissue repair-associated genes. ResultsThe results showed that laminin 332 biofunctionalisation of the implant surface resulted in lower values of Ra, Rq and positive surface roughness parameters Rsk, Rku and Rv. The elemental composition showed an increase in nitrogen and carbon content corresponding to protein binding. The biofunctionalized surfaces did not affect cell viability and promoted cytokine secretion (IL-1a and IL-8) and a significant increase (p <0.05) in MCP-1, EGF, FGF, TGF and VEGF gene expression compared to the control. ConclusionIn conclusion, laminin 332 coating Ti implants was shown to be effective in promoting keratinocyte adhesion, spreading, and viability. This approach could be an alternative way to improve biocompatibility.

Surface Topography in Cutting-Speed-Direction Ultrasonic-Assisted Turning.

Ultrasonic vibration has been employed to assist in turning, introducing intermittent machining to reduce average cutting force, minimize tool wear, and enhance machining efficiency, thereby improving surface roughness. However, achieving intermittent cutting necessitates specific conditions, with a cutting speed or feed rate falling below the critical speed associated with the ultrasonic vibration parameters. This study presents a theoretical model for surface formation in cutting-speed-direction ultrasonic-assisted turning (CUAT), covering both continuous and intermittent machining regimes. Experimental validation was conducted on C45 carbon steel and 201 stainless steel to demonstrate the applicability of the theoretical model across different materials. Digital microscope analysis revealed 3D topography consistency with the theoretical formula. Surface roughness evaluations were performed for both CUAT and CT (conventional turning) methods. The results indicated a significant reduction in roughness Ra for C45 steel samples machined with CUAT, up to 80% compared to CT at a cutting speed of 20 m/min, while only exhibiting slight fluctuations when turning 201 stainless steel. Detailed analysis and explanation of these phenomena are presented herein.

The Process of Digital Data Flow in RE/CAD/RP/CAI Systems Concerning Planning Surgical Procedures in the Craniofacial Area

This paper presents the process of digital data flow in RE/CAD/RP/CAI systems to develop models for planning surgical procedures in the craniofacial area. At the first RE modeling stage, digital data processing, segmentation, and the reconstruction of the geometry of the anatomical structures were performed. During the CAD modeling stage, three different concepts were utilized. The first concept was used to create a tool that could mold the geometry of the cranial vault. The second concept was created to prepare a prototype implant that would complement the anterior part of the mandibular geometry. And finally, the third concept was used to design a customized prototype surgical plate that would match the mandibular geometry accurately. Physical models were made using a rapid prototyping technique. A Bambu Lab X1 3D printer was used for this purpose. The process of geometric accuracy evaluation was carried out on manufactured prototypes of surgical plates made of ABS+, CPE, PLA+, and PETG material. In the geometric accuracy evaluation process, the smallest deviation values were obtained for the ABS plus material, within a tolerance of ±0.1 mm, and the largest were obtained for CPE (±0.2 mm) and PLA plus (±0.18 mm). In terms of the surface roughness evaluation, the highest value of the Sa parameter was obtained for the PLA plus material, which was 4.15 µm, and the lowest was obtained for the CPE material, equal to 3.62 µm. The knowledge of the flow of digital data and the identification of factors determining the accuracy of mapping the geometry of anatomical structures allowed for the development of a procedure that improves the modeling and manufacturing of anatomical structures within the craniofacial region.

In Vitro Evaluation of Surface Roughness and Color Variation after Two Brushing Protocols with Toothpastes Containing Different Whitening Technologies

The aim was to evaluate the effect of different whitening toothpastes on the enamel surface roughness and color variation. Twenty-four molars were sectioned and divided into eight groups (n = 3) considering the following two factors under study: toothpaste type (Colgate® Total Original, Oral B® 3D White Luxe Perfection, Curaprox® Black is White, and Signal® White Now) and brushing protocol (short- and long-term). Surface roughness was examined by atomic force microscopy (AFM), and color change (ΔE) was measured using the CIE L*a*b* system. Data were statistically analyzed using comparative parametric tests at a 5% significance level. In the short-term protocol, only the Signal® White Now toothpaste increased surface roughness (p = 0.038) compared to the Colgate® Total Original group. No significant differences (p &gt; 0.05) were observed in surface roughness in the long-term protocol. Regarding color variation, no statistically significant differences (p &gt; 0.05) were observed in either protocol. Overall, the whitening toothpastes did not affect enamel surface roughness or color, except for Signal® White Now, which caused increased roughness in the short-term protocol. However, all toothpastes induced a visual change in color.

Surface roughness and optical characteristics evaluations after chairside adjustment of different zirconia types.

Limited evidence is available for the effect of chairside adjustment using rotary cutting instruments on the surface roughness and optical properties of different zirconia types. To evaluate the effect of simulated adjustments on surface roughness and optical properties of different zirconia types. Three Partially Stabilized Zirconia (PSZ) types based on mole percent yttria (Y) concentration from the same manufacturer (Katana; Kuraray) were used: 3Y-PSZ, 4Y-PSZ, and 5Y-PSZ. Thirty disk-shaped specimens (Ø14 × 1.2 mm) from different zirconia types (N = 90) were prepared. Specimens were either left without adjustment (NA), adjusted with Dialite ZR finishing and polishing system (Brasseler) (APol), or adjusted with course diamond instruments only (ADia). The specimens were distributed into 9 groups (n = 10): Group 3Y-PSZ/NA, Group 3Y-PSZ/APol, Group 3Y-PSZ/ADia, Group 4Y-PSZ/NA, Group 4Y-PSZ/APol, Group 4Y-PSZ/ADia, Group 5Y-PSZ/NA, Group 5Y-PSZ/APol, and Group 5Y-PSZ/ADia. The surface roughness of specimen was analyzed using an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) (Bruker's Dimension Icon, Bruker) and Root Means Square (RMS) were recorded (nm). Surface Gloss (SG), Translucency Parameter (TP), and Contrast Ratio (CR) values of all groups were recorded using an integrating sphere spectrophotometer. Statistical analysis was performed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's multiple comparison tests for pairwise comparisons at p < 0.05 and 95% confidence interval. APol had no effect on the surface roughness (p = 0.88) while ADia had a significant negative effect (p < 0.05) despite the type of zirconia. Out of the three testes optical properties, only SG was negatively affected by ADia for all types of zirconia (p < 0.05). The two adjustment types did not affect the TP of all the tested zirconia (p = 0.91). The CR was not affected by the tested adjustments for all zirconia types (p = 0.726). Proper zirconia adjustment following a sequence of burs and polishers can maintain acceptable roughness and optical properties. Adjustment of zirconia with rough diamond can lead to deleterious effects and should be avoided. Chairside adjustment of zirconia could lead to rougher surface and unpredictable changes of surface gloss. Therefore, zirconia adjustment should be minimized to the greatest extent possible and a proper protocol should be followed if had to be done.

Influence of Tool Inclination and Effective Cutting Speed on Roughness Parameters of Machined Shaped Surfaces

Free-form surfaces in the automotive or aviation industry where the future shape of the product will contain complex surfaces raises the question of how to achieve the necessary shape of the required quality in the milling process. One of the methods of their production is the use of 5-axis milling, in which it is necessary to consider not only the input data of the process itself, but also the methodology for evaluating the desired results. Correctly answered questions can thus facilitate the choice of the inclination of the tool when machining parts of the surfaces defined in the experiment. The primary goal of the paper was to monitor the influence of tool inclination on the quality of the machined surface and effective cutting speed by evaluating surface roughness and surface topography. The experiment was designed to show the effect of different tool positions while the feed per tooth fz for the finishing operation remained constant. The best result in terms of surface quality was achieved with a tool inclination of 15° in the cutting process. The most unfavorable result was obtained with a tool axis inclination of zero degrees due to unfavorable cutting conditions.

The mechanism on surface integrity and fatigue performance of double‐sided micro‐cutting enhanced FeCoCrNiAl0.6 high entropy alloy

AbstractThis study examines the impact of cutting parameters on the fatigue properties of FeCoCrNiAl0.6 high‐entropy alloy under bi‐directional micro‐cutting. Utilizing Abaqus/fe−safe for analysis, we evaluated surface roughness, internal stress distribution, and fatigue longevity. Enhanced cutting speed resulted in smoother surfaces, whereas increased cut depth intensified surface roughness. Optimal cutting at 60,000 mm/min and 40 μm depth yielded a notable 91% rise in compressive stress (207 MPa) compared to slower speeds (108 MPa at 30,000 mm/min). Yield strength remained stable at 700 MPa across conditions. Fatigue resistance improved post‐bi‐directional cutting, with a 21.8–26.6% boost in life cycles, highlighting a consistent 10% advantage over single‐direction cutting.

Investigation on high cycle fatigue performance of additively manufactured Alloys: Synergistic effects of surface finishing and Post-Heat treatment

The high-cycle fatigue (HCF) behavior of additively manufactured (AM) materials in structural applications remains insufficiently explored when contrasted with conventionally fabricated alloys. Addressing this research gap, we systematically investigate the potential to enhance HCF performance in AM alloys through a strategic interplay of surface finishing and post-heat treatment design. Concentrating on laser powder bed fusion, we evaluate surface roughness and post-heat treatment effects on HCF life across a300to1000 MPa stress range. Findings show that, at700to1000 MPa, surface finishing significantly extends HCF life by mitigating crack initiation. Paradoxically, at300to700 MPa, it shortens HCF life due to induced local residual stress on the sample surface. Additionally, post-aging finishing moderately enhances HCF life compared to pre-aging. This underscores the crucial role of sequence in surface finishing and heat treatment, emphasizing their collective impact on fatigue properties. Our study advances the understanding of post-processing factors influencing AM alloy fatigue properties, providing valuable insights for enhancing mechanical performance.

Texture feature similarity-based roughness intelligent evaluation: a case study applied to milled surfaces

Surface roughness is of great significance in maintaining mechanical performance and improving the reliability of the equipment. However, fast surface roughness evaluations that are sufficiently stable and efficient for engineering in situ use have not yet been realized. To address this issue, an image-driven roughness intelligent method is proposed in this research. By evaluating the texture similarity intelligently between the testing image and the reference image, the surface roughness of the testing image can be acquired. Firstly, with a proposed adaptive texture extraction method, the texture feature of an image can be extracted even under a complex background. Secondly, by establishing the graph structure of the texture grayscale features, the similarity between different images is evaluated. Finally, by establishing a sparrow-optimized support vector machine regression method, the mapping relationship between the similarity and the surface roughness can be acquired. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method for intelligent evaluation of roughness has superior prediction performance (the average relative prediction error of Ra and Rz are 8.8156% and 8.0571%, respectively). Therefore, this work provides a useful tool for non-contact detection of workpiece surface roughness.

The pivotal role of the polyethylene glycol amount as compatibilizing on the morphological features of silica-based blends

Silica-based hybrid blends at different molecular or nanometer scale have gained a lot of interests from the technological point of view. In particular, several inorganic-organic hybrids find application in the biomedical field. In this context, inorganic SiO2 and hybrids made up of SiO2 and polyethylene glycol (PEG) have been synthesised via the sol-gel route and characterised from the morphological (throught the Atomic Force Microscopy - AFM) and spectroscopic point of view to shed light on their features as possible hybrid biomaterials. AFM investigation allowed for an effective quantitative evaluation of surface roughness of bioactive sol-gel-based materials. The results revealed an increase in material porosity as a function of the PEG amount in the systems, thus highlighting the pivotal role of the PEG amount as compatibilizing on the morphological features of silica-based blends. The co-presence of both the inorganic and organic phases was confirmed by the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Moreover, the influence of PEG was also investigated by analysing the deconvoluted FT-IR spectra in the range of 1600-750 cm−1.

Effect of Thermal Cycling or Simulated Gastric Acid on the Surface Characteristics of Dental Ceramic Materials

(1) Background: The presence of various dental ceramic materials with different chemical compositions complicates clinicians’ decision making, especially in cases with a highly acidic environment appearing in patients suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease or other eating disorders. Thermal alterations in the oral cavity can also affect surface structure and roughness, resulting in variations in both degradation mechanisms and/or bacteria adhesion. The aim of the present in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of thermal cycling and exposure to simulated gastric acid on the surface roughness of different ceramics; (2) Methods: Five groups of different ceramics were utilized, and twenty specimens were fabricated for each group. Specimens were either thermocycled for 10,000 cycles in distilled water or immersed in simulated gastric acid for 91 h. The evaluation of surface roughness was performed with optical profilometry, while scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy were also performed; (4) Conclusions: Based on the combination of the surface roughness profile and structural integrity, zirconia specimens presented the smallest changes after immersion in simulated gastric acid followed by lithium disilicate materials. Zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate ceramic presented the most notable changes in microstructure and roughness after both treatments.

A study on the fabrication procedure for a high-D/Ti-ratio-deuterated-titanium film on the disk-type neutron generator target

This study aims to present thin film deposition and deuterium adsorption procedure to fabricate disk-type targets with high D/Ti values for a neutron generator and increase their lifespan. The neutron target consists of a titanium thin film with hydrogen loading, and a copper substrate for heat removal. We optimized the incident deuterium ion beam energy and thin film thickness using Geant4 simulations. Additionally, we calculated the expected neutron yield under the optimized conditions. The hydrogen adsorption conditions were optimized by comparing the H/Ti results as per hydrogen adsorption temperature and loading time using titanium foils of different thickness values. Hydrogen (or deuterium) adsorption ratio is strongly influenced by the surface condition and the deposition conditions of the thin film. A titanium film was deposited in various conditions of plasma DC power and substrate temperature. The quality of the thin film was evaluated through surface roughness evaluation and thin film sheet resistance for each deposition conditions. Subsequently, the hydrogen adsorption results were compared according to the quality of the thin titanium films, and the thin titanium film deposition conditions with the highest hydrogen adsorption ratio were confirmed. The selected conditions were applied to conduct deuterium adsorption. In conclusion, this study underscores the critical relationship between thin film quality and hydrogen (or deuterium) adsorption ratio, reinforcing the importance of optimizing thin film deposition parameters for the design of neutron generator disk-type targets with high quality of film and extended lifespan.

Approach to Heterogeneous Surface Roughness Evaluation for Surface Coating Preparation

This paper focuses on evaluating the roughness of heterogeneous surfaces, aiming to interpret data effectively for thorough assessment. Previous research highlights the significant impact of surface roughness on final coatings. Beam-cutting machining generates surfaces with position-dependent roughness parameter changes. However, there is inconsistency in the methods for investigating roughness in such surfaces, leading to the loss of crucial information and potentially inaccurate results. This could result in flawed coating preparation and subsequent defects. This paper proposes a suitable evaluation method involving an optical 3D profilometer and a stabilizing support system for reliable measurements. It provides a detailed description of the materials and methods used. The objective is to establish a more consistent and accurate approach to assessing roughness for coating preparation. Technical applications demonstrate up-to-fivefold fluctuations in surface topography parameters, as illustrated in this manuscript. Overall, this paper seeks to address these challenges and provide a robust framework for evaluating roughness in heterogeneous surfaces, thereby enhancing surface coating preparation processes.

Root surface roughness evaluation following application of different periodontal instruments and Er:YAG laser: A profilometry and SEM study.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of 30°-angled Er:YAG laser tip and different periodontal instruments on root surface roughness and morphology in vitro. Eighteen bovine teeth root without carious lesion were decoronated from the cementoenamel junction and seperated longitidunally. A total of 36 obtained blocks were mounted in resin blocks and polished with silicon carbide papers under water irrigation. These blocks were randomly assigned into 3 treatment groups. In Group 1,30°-angled Er:YAG laser (2.94μm) tip was applied onto the blocks with a 20Hz, 120mJ energy output under water irrigation for 20s. In Groups 2 and 3, the same treatment was applied to the blocks with new generation ultrasonic tip and conventional curette apico-coronally for 20s with a sweeping motion. Surface roughness and morphology were evaluated before and after instrumentation with a profilometer and SEM, respectively. After instrumentation, profilometric analysis revealed significantly higher roughness values compared to baseline in all treatment groups(p < 0.05). Laser group revealed the roughest surface morphology followed by conventional curette and new generation ultrasonic tip treatment groups (p < 0.05). In SEM analysis, irregular surfaces and crater defects were seen more frequently in the laser group. Results of the study showed that the use of new generation ultrasonic tip was associated with smoother surface morphology compared to 30°-angled Er-YAG laser tip and conventional curette. Further in vitro and in vivo studies with an increased sample size are necessary to support the present study findings.
