Enhancing rooftop solar energy potential evaluation in high-density cities: A Deep Learning and GIS based approach

The assessment of rooftop solar potential is vital for optimal photovoltaic (PV) system placement and renewable energy policy in dense urban areas. Complex shading from buildings and diverse rooftop obstacles have posed significant challenges to this evaluation. We propose a method that leverages Deep Learning and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to precisely gauge solar energy potential at the city scale, accounting for shading and obstacle effects. We integrated building data with height attributes to measure inter-building shading and employed the DeepLab-v3 Convolutional Neural Network to identify rooftop obstructions from high-resolution satellite imagery. Using this hybrid framework, we calculated the available rooftop area in Shanghai, excluding the Chongming Island, and produced a detailed map of PV potential. Results show that the estimated annual potential for rooftop solar radiation in Shanghai stands at 257,204 GWh, with a predicted annual PV electricity generation of 49,753 GWh. In the study area, obstacles occupy approximately 14.9 % of the rooftop area. Neglecting the impact of rooftop obstructions and shading effects would result in a 25.6 % overestimation of the rooftop PV capacity. This work advances the precision of renewable energy development and informs sustainable urban planning strategies.

A GIS-Based Multidimensional Evaluation Method for Solar Energy Potential in Shanxi Province, China

Solar energy is considered one of the most hopeful alternative sources to avoiding dependence on fossil fuels, and it does not cause any air pollution. GIS-based solar energy potential evaluation is mainly focused on regional scale; further, more solar energy potential evaluation with building scale is calculated through observation data and mathematical model. Therefore, in this paper, a GIS-based joint solar energy potential evaluation is developed to evaluate the distributed photovoltaic potential and centralized photovoltaic potential. Shanxi province in China, which has abundant coal resources, is used as the study area. The raster grid scale is used as the minimum research scale, which could not only deal with the distributed photovoltaic potential but could also calculate the centralized photovoltaic potential. The obtained results indicate that the developed method could effectively deal with problems associated with the distributed photovoltaic potential and centralized photovoltaic potential in the raster grid scale.

Characterization of Agricultural Residues of Zea mays for Their Application as Solid Biofuel: Case Study in San Francisco Pichátaro, Michoacán, Mexico

This proposal evaluates the energy potential of agricultural residues of Zea mays from an indigenous community in Mexico. The study consists of four stages: (a) evaluation of residue production in all community farming areas (b) morphological and physicochemical characterization, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), as well as infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman (c) the proximal and functional evaluation of the residues, through fiber analysis, determination of fixed carbon, humidity, estimation of calorific value, ash microanalysis and elemental analysis, and (d) evaluation of energy potential and multicriteria analysis. The results show that Z. mays residues have initial moisture values of less than 10%, ash content below 20%, fixed carbon around 14% and a calorific value of 17.6 MJ/kg associated with polymeric compounds and carbohydrates, as well as a percentage of extractable compounds of the order of 40%. The production of these residues on the 249 hectares (ha) of cultivation used would generate 23 TJ/year, whereas if the total number of hectares available were cultivated, the total energy generation would be 330 TJ/year, which is enough to satisfy the wood fuel demand of approximately seven communities with the characteristics of the study community. Due to this potential, as well as the results of the characterization, the agricultural mentioned residues are an energy alternative to meet the energy demand in communities in Michoacán, Mexico.

Evaluation of Energy Potential from Coffee Pulp in a Hydrothermal Power Market through System Dynamics: The Case of Colombia

Colombia has abundant solar, wind, and biomass resources for energy production with non-conventional renewable energy (NCREs) sources. However, the current participation of NCREs is negligible in the electricity mix of the country, which has historically depended on hydroelectric plants. Meteorological phenomena, such as the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), threaten the energy supply during periods of drought, and the generation of energy using fossil fuels is necessary to offset the hydric deficit. Since Colombia is one of the largest coffee producers in the world, this study used system dynamics to evaluate the energy potential from cherry coffee pulp and analyze trends in the energy supply for different energy sources in scenarios of climatic vulnerability. First, the causal relationship of the system was identified, and the key variables of the model were projected. Then, the behavior of the system was evaluated by simulating a 120-month period. The results showed a generation potential from coffee pulp of 177 GWh per year and a power generation of 11,250 GWh and 7537 GWh with solar and wind resources, respectively, by 2030. Finally, it was confirmed that including new renewable resources is a key factor in supporting hydraulic generation in the warm phase of ENSO while reducing thermal generation dependence.

Solar Energy Potential Evaluation. Case of Study: M'Sila, an Algerian Province

Solar energy is the most important green energy source that may be used to address the problems caused by conventional energy sources. The research in this paper aims to evaluate the solar energy potential of M'Sila, an Algerian internal region, and to determine which technology, among those currently available on the market, is adequate for harnessing that potential for electricity production (PV and CSP). This assessment was based on data (daily temperature and daily solar irradiation) collected at M'Sila weather station for one year and from the NASA site for 34 years from 1984 to 2017. These data were treated with excel 2016 software to determine the total horizontal, diffuse and direct normal solar irradiation. During the study period, the total solar irradiation falling on a horizontal surface in M'Sila (GHI) was estimated to be 1.79 MWh/m2/year. The diffuse solar irradiation incident on a horizontal surface (DHI) and direct normal irradiation, respectively, were estimated to be 594.88 kWh/m2/year, 2117.93 kWh/m2/year. M'Sila is a favourable land for the installation of concentrating solar power plants and photovoltaic panels due to its significant potential energy. The parabolic trough system is recommended. While polycrystalline PV modules should be promoted and installed in M'Sila.

Characterization and energy potential evaluation of urban municipal solid waste of Pakistan

Determining the physical and chemical characteristics of municipal solid waste (MSW) aids in assessing the potential environmental impacts of any waste management initiative. The study aimed to determine the basic physical and chemical characteristics of urban MSW from two Pakistani megacities (Lahore and Rawalpindi). Physical, proximate, and ultimate micronutrient analyses, as well as an energy potential analysis, were performed on the sampled MSW. Physically, there was 65–70% biogenic content and 40–53% moisture content. Elemental contents were found to be carbon (38–48%) > oxygen (18–21%) > hydrogen (4–4.3%) > nitrogen (0.5–0.9%) > sulfur (0.4–0.8%). Carbohydrates are the most abundant (32–37%) micronutrients. The combustible fraction of waste has a high calorific value, an indication of its energy potential. The MSW generated by Rawalpindi (880 tons per day) and Lahore (6100 tons per day) was found to be suitable for energy production of 6213 and 40,897 MWh, respectively. The MSW of Rawalpindi and Lahore can generate 49 MW per day and 341 MW per day of electricity, respectively. MSW has the potential to be a valuable renewable energy source for Pakistan if appropriate policies and waste management technologies (such as thermochemical treatments and biochemical treatments) are implemented.

Evaluation of Energy Transition Pathways to Phase out Coal for District Heating in Berlin

As Germany struggles to meet its near-term emissions reduction targets in lagging sectors like heating or transport, the need to identify energy transition pathways beyond power generation is urgent. This paper presents an investigation of tangible and climate-friendly transformation paths to replace the existing coal-fired units used for heat and power generation in Berlin with a largely CO2-free innovative technology mix. Although the literature has extensively covered the decarbonization of the power generation sector on different geographic scales, few studies have focused on the decarbonization of the heat sector in cities with large district heating networks, like Berlin. This paper aims to fill this gap. The proposed methodology combines three key elements: (1) scenario analysis including high-fidelity models of the European power market and the heat demand in Berlin, (2) evaluation of energy potential from low-carbon alternative sources, and (3) a techno-economic portfolio optimization. The results suggest that a coal phase-out by 2030 is feasible without any discontinuities in the provision of heat. Although low-carbon sources could partially substitute coal-based heat, they would not be sufficient to replace it completely. Thus, a gas-based hydrogen-ready combined heat and power plant linked with a power-to-heat plant would be required to fill the gap.

Assessment of methane emission and evaluation of energy potential from the municipal solid waste landfills

ABSTRACT The assessment of energy potential from the elimination of MSW disposed off in landfills has never been estimated in Algeria, while it can make a significant contribution to the municipal institutions. It will help design waste to energy (WTE) measures and facilities aimed at having energy potential and minimizing GHG emissions into atmosphere. In this work, the emission of GHG was estimated for three landfills and an open dumpsite of the city of Oran using different models: IPCC default model (DM), IPCC first order decay (FOD) 2006, LandGem V3.02 model and Modified Triangular Method (MTM). The potential for electric power generation was also estimated during the production of electrical energy each year (kWh/year) from the methane emitted since the landfills opened up to 2018. The total production of methane by the four sites was calculated from 1986 to 2018 and estimated as follows: 904.81 Gg (1,261,938,633 m3) according to the IPCC-DM model, 472,85Gg (659,483,960 m3) by IPCC-FOD, 474.91Gg (669,330,543 m3) by LandGem and 289.93 Gg by MTM. The total potential for the four sites since their opening was estimated at 2214.81GWh by IPCC-FOD, 1921.98 GWh by LandGem and 1111.64 GWh by MTM. The paper finds that the 560 million kg of municipal solid waste generated daily in Oran city can produce about 200 GWh every year, representing 15% of Oran’s total electricity demand in 2018.The results of this work are promising and predict a significant potential of the energy by MSW.

Kinetics of landfill leachate remediation and microalgae metabolism as well as energy potential evaluation

Understanding kinetics of microalgae growth in landfill leachate are essential to operate landfill leachate remediation with microalgae in the most efficient manner possible. In the study, kinetics of microalgae Chlorella vulgaris growth, nutrients uptake and metabolism in response to major influencing factors were investigated. Energy potential of microalgae in landfill leachate was assessed to provide guide for large-scale application. Results showed that the highest maximum specific growth rate of 2.31 d−1 was obtained under low light intensity of 60 μmol/m2/s (dilution rate = 10%, CO2 concentration = 5%), while the highest maximum biomass concentration of 1.64 g/L was obtained under light intensity of 160 μmol/m2/s (dilution rate = 10%, CO2 concentration = 7%). The specific uptake kinetics of nutrients by microalgae presented obvious difference between various species and obvious luxury uptake of NO3− was observed. Metabolism flow of intracellular compositions under various operating conditions were quantitatively depicted. Energy yield analysis indicated that the highest volumetric energy yield (37.13 kJ/L) was comparative to the volumetric heat value of natural gas (35.59 kJ/L).

An evaluation of alternatives to energy recovery from municipal solid waste part 1: waste flow and energy potential

ABSTRACT This two-part paper, which consists of Part 1: waste flow and energy potential, and Part 2: energy balance and carbon footprint, respectively, aims to evaluate alternatives to energy recovery from Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) in Pyongyang. This first part focuses on an evaluation of alternatives to energy recovery from MSW in terms of waste flow and energy potential analysis. This paper proposes three alternatives to energy recovery from MSW, and conducts an evaluation of energy potential for the alternatives, based on an analysis of the existing MSW management options (i.e., recycling & reuse, incineration, landfill, and composting) in the municipality, inclusive of MSW composition and characteristics of waste flow (i.e., refuse-derived fuel) being fed to energy recovery. The results show that alternative 3 (i.e., gasification reactor) could produce the largest electricity, followed by alternative 1 (i.e., grate combustor and fixed dome reactor) and alternative 2 (i.e., fluidized bed combustor). In the meanwhile, alternative 1 accounts for 29.9% of the largest gross efficiency, followed by alternative 3 and alternative 2, as 29.7% and 28.0%, respectively. This study can provide a possibility of energy recovery from MSW to the local planners in Pyongyang.

Methanisation: A promising green technology to manage organic wastes in the Moroccan dairy industry

Abstract Production of green renewable energy such as methane from dairy wastes on an industrial scale allows to the economy of energy bill and increase the competitiveness. However, evaluation of energy potential at different conditions in the laboratory scale is necessary before the industrialization step, which give useful information about the most important parameters and the bio-methanogenic potential (BMP) of dairy wastes. For that, four dairy wastes are collected during one year from a Moroccan dairy industry and the bio-methanogenic potential is determined. The results are very promising and indicate that the pH 8, 20 ml of alkalinity added, ratio of 50% of inoculum or storage one day are the optimal parameters to increase methane yield. In these conditions the, BMP is reached 629.65 mlCH4.gVS−1 for physicochemical sludge (ratio inoculum dung/sludge R50%) coming from the dairy industry. The total of methane produced by all wastes assessed is equivalent respectively in electrical and thermal energy estimation to 94753.60 MWh.year−1 and 1003273.39 GJ.year−1. This makes this industry very competitive because it can be assured in average until 210.56% of its electric consummation.

Biogas production from sewage sludge as a distributed energy generation element: A nationwide case study for Turkey

Sewage sludge is outcome of the wastewater treatment process. It contains hazardous biological and chemical compounds that need to be stabilized. Anaerobic digestion is among the stabilization methods of sewage sludge. Digestion process destroys organic fraction of sewage sludge and produces biogas (%65 Methane, %34 CO2 and etc.). Biogas is burned in internal combustion engines to produce electricity. Digested residue can be used fertilizer. In this study, the total electricity production that can be obtained by anaerobic digestion of all wastewater treatment plants throughout the country is examined. Main objective of this study is preliminary evaluation of energy potential of biogas from sewage sludge anaerobic digestion. Since Wastewater Treatment Plants are distributed in the various regions of a city, above mentioned biogas plants should be considered as distributed generation equipment. Use of small scale energy production plants near the consumers is called distributed generation. Energy transmission losses and related infrastructure cost can be reduced or delayed by means of distributed generation. Within a smart grid approach, mentioned plants can support electricity grid. They can also serve as local emergency power plants. As a nationwide scenario WWTP are evaluated. Biogas energy capacity potential of 234 plants is calculated. Capacities less than 100 kWe are assumed to be non-feasible due to scale economy. It is evident that 91 plants can be installed with an average capacity of 660 kWe.

Wind energy potential evaluation for power generation in selected districts of Jharkhand

ABSTRACTThis study evaluated the availability of wind energy for electricity production at different locations, i.e., Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Devghar, Lohardaga, and Chaibasa, in Jharkhand, India. Due to the rapidly rising demand for power in Jharkhand, there is a requirement of an alternative renewable source of energy to lower the dependence on its limited fossil fuel resources. The studied locations were found to be unsuitable for wind to electricity generation on a large scale at 10 m height above the ground. However, small-scale wind turbines can be used to extract energy from low-speed wind, preferably at a height above 10 m from the ground.

GIS-Based Approach for Municipal Renewable Energy Planning to Support Post-Earthquake Revitalization: A Japanese Case Study

Following a regional-level study conducted in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan (Wang et al., 2014 [1]), this paper presents an approach for municipal renewable energy planning and its experimental application in a Japanese municipality using a Geographic Information System (GIS). The proposed approach is comprised of local issue identification, renewable energy potential evaluation and visualization, site comparison and scenario analysis. GIS was used to analyze and visualize solar, wind and biomass (forest and agriculture residue) potential within Kawamata Town, Fukushima, Japan. According to local conditions, all potential sites were coded and then compared based on different criteria, such as solar radiation, wind speed, slope and land uses, among others. In the scenario analysis section, two scenarios, “renewable energy prioritized” and ”evacuation area prioritized”, were adopted and compared. The scenarios are altered in terms of placement and the number of renewable energy facilities inside and outside evacuation areas within the town. The results generated through the proposed approach can provide information on local potentials of renewable energy resources, as well as renewable energy development alternatives at the municipal level. They can be used in the interactive dialogue for the municipal renewable energy planning process, to help to fulfill the municipality’s post-earthquake energy developmental vision.

Development of Rasterized Map using PVGIS for Assessment of Solar PV Energy Potential of Odisha

Solar energy is a potential resource among the various renewable energy options which is clean, inexhaustible and eco-friendly. The development of usage and installation of PV system needs a suitable solar policy making plan through proper assessment of solar PV Energy potential in Odisha. This study presents a very simple methodology for estimating the photovoltaic potential of Odisha using the PVGIS online software. The presented method is also useful in determining the PV potential of almost any state, country and region that covers the database of PVGIS. The study divides the total geographic area of Odisha into 1195 square areas with each having its particular coordinate approximately at the midpoint of the location. The PVGIS software is used to evaluate the value of incident solar radiation and generated PV energy at each site. The evaluation of PV Energy Potential includes implementation of four cases that differentiates the PV system according to its technology and structure. The evaluation of energy potential on each four cases estimates two important parameters that are total incident Global radiation for a year and total annual PV Energy production. PV potential of Odisha using the estimated data is presented in the form of rasterized plot.

Performance Analysis of Methods for Estimating Weibull Parameters for Wind Speed Distribution in the District of Maroua

In this study, five numerical Weibull distribution methods, namely, the maximum likelihood method, the modified maximum likelihood method (MLM), the energy pattern factor method (EPF), the graphical method (GM), and the empirical method (EM) were explored using hourly synoptic data collected from 1985 to 2013 in the district of Maroua in Cameroon. The performance analysis revealed that the MLM was the most accurate model followed by the EPF and the GM. Furthermore, the comparison between the wind speed standard deviation predicted by the proposed models and the measured data showed that the MLM has a smaller relative error of -3.33% on average compared to -11.67% on average for the EPF and -8.86% on average for the GM. As a result, the MLM was precisely recommended to estimate the scale and shape parameters for an accurate and efficient wind energy potential evaluation. Determining Balıkesir’s Energy Potential Using a Regression Analysis Computer Program

Solar power and wind energy are used concurrently during specific periods, while at other times only the more efficient is used, and hybrid systems make this possible. When establishing a hybrid system, the extent to which these two energy sources support each other needs to be taken into account. This paper is a study of the effects of wind speed, insolation levels, and the meteorological parameters of temperature and humidity on the energy potential in Balıkesir, in the Marmara region of Turkey. The relationship between the parameters was studied using a multiple linear regression method. Using a designed-for-purpose computer program, two different regression equations were derived, with wind speed being the dependent variable in the first and insolation levels in the second. The regression equations yielded accurate results. The computer program allowed for the rapid calculation of different acceptance rates. The results of the statistical analysis proved the reliability of the equations. An estimate of identified meteorological parameters and unknown parameters could be produced with a specified precision by using the regression analysis method. The regression equations also worked for the evaluation of energy potential.
