"The emergence of new journals in emergency medicine has excited many emergency physicians and troubled others." So begins one of two editorials introducing<i>Academic Emergency Medicine</i>, the official journal of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM).<i>Academic Emergency Medicine</i>, aimed at both academic clinicians and researchers, seeks to provide rapid review and prompt dissemination of information dealing with the field from multiple perspectives. Several admirable goals are articulated, primary among which is the publication of the "highest quality original research relevant to emergency medicine." The journal also serves as a forum for critical evaluation of controversies and innovations. Within this journal one finds discussions of societal, economic, and political issues as they affect academic emergency medicine.
