10.M. Scientific session: JA ImpleMENTAL Abstract Workshop

Abstract JA ImpleMENTAL is major initiative across Europe and was initiated on the request of Member States, on October 2021 under the European Union 3rd Health Programme. The workshop is organized by JA ImpleMENTAL in partnership with EUPHA Mental Health Section, a member of the JA ImpleMENTAL Stakeholder Forum. It will include four presentations that will contribute to an interesting discussion about the future of community mental health services that are user-centered, recovery-oriented and human rights based as well as about the synergies with national strategies and the EU Initiatives. Vasileia Konte the JA ImpleMENTAL Coordinator will provide an overview of the Mental Health System Reforms based on the Belgian Best Practice model, which is implemented in 11 countries. It will elaborate on key activities and prioritized key areas of mental health system transformation as well as enablers, barriers and key lessons learned from the implementation process. Danijela Štimac Grbić from Croatia will present the Croatian experience in the implementation of a mobile rehabilitation team for providing psychosocial interventions in the community in which peer workers are employed for the first time. Based on the successful work of the mobile team, Croatia has included 30 new mobile teams in its network of public health services that will operate throughout Croatia. Teresa Nicolas Lopez from Murcia Spain will present the project “Inclusive Life Projects” which offers comprehensive community care to adults with severe mental illness within projects of autonomous living and provides a concrete and real response to their needs, with the ultimate objective of avoiding the risk of institutionalization. Anna Paradesioti from Cyprus will focus on how to achieve a smooth transition from inpatient to community mental health services promoting collaboration among those services and professionals, by adopting an intersectoral approach. Jutta Lindert will provide valuable comments by bringing helpful insights and views of the Stakeholder Forum. Key messages • Transformation towards community based care increase availability and efficiency of services. • User’s centered human rights based recovery approach care with engaging stakeholders including people with lived experience.

Policies and programs on children’s health promotion in the EU in the context of the JA Health4EUKids

Abstract Background Overweight and obesity prevalence are a global public health challenge. The prevalence is rapidly increasing, with significant health risks such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer. Objectives To describe the state of the art of policies and programs (PPs) on children’s health promotion and responsive parenthood (children 0-12 years) in the EU, and to identify their gaps. Methods A cross-sectional study was carried out through an online survey, as part of the Health4EUKids Joint Action (JA) (HADEA n.101082462), between October and December 2023, targeting all EU member states (MSs) involved. Results The survey collected information about 74 PPs from 11 EU MSs of the JA. The PPs are primarily focused on healthcare (62.1%), education (24.1%), and social sectors (10.3%), with a focus on children aged 6-11 years. The settings for PPs include primary schools, communities, secondary schools, and healthcare services. The PPs are characterized by different degrees of innovation, controversy, equity, transferability, and sustainability, although the structural or systemic impact and public visibility appear to be lower among other characteristics. The formulation and design of PPs include problem analysis (73%), based on national or local data and on stakeholder consultation. As for implementation, most PPs are implemented upon release, but recommended action and allocated human resources are not fully adequate. Regular monitoring and evaluation (47.3%) are based on defined outcomes, standards, and indicators (63.5%). The results are disseminated to decision-makers and stakeholders (37.8%), through media, and to the general population (32.4%). Conclusions Most PPs are variable and context-dependent. It is necessary to align the policies with the implementation, in all its aspects, and to strengthen monitoring, evaluation, and communication with the relevant stakeholders, which currently appear to be the most lacking aspects. Key messages • Most European policies and programs are context-dependent, mainly in healthcare. Yet, a cross-sectoral trend involving health, education, and social sectors emerges. • The study stresses the need for better alignment between policy formulation and implementation to enhance the effectiveness of EU children’s health programs.

How much digital public health is taught in German public health programs? A qualitative analysis

Abstract Background Digital public health (DiPH) professionals are crucial for a successful digital transformation in social and health care. However, the extent to which academic professionals are taught DiPH-related content in their public health studies in Germany remains unclear. Methods We used a systematic module handbook analysis to assess accredited full-time public health-oriented degree programs at German Universities for DiPH-related modules. Programs were identified through the Hochschulkompass platform and among the German Public Health Association member programs. We used MAXQDA for the content analysis of the included module handbooks. Results We identified 79 public health programs. Of these, 10 Bachelor’s and 6 Master’s offered at least one DiPH module, all being highly heterogeneous in their overall addressed public health subfields. Regarding DiPH, 6 programs lectured on the ethics of digitalizing health and data protection, 5 programs each offered modules on DiPH in health policy, on data science in healthcare and software used for eHealth, or on the digital determinants of health. 4 programs each included modules on digital health promotion and alternative evaluation methods. 3 programs each addressed digital science communication and health technology assessment. Finally, 2 programs had modules on digital epidemiology. We found differences between the common understanding of DiPH in academia and the content in the module handbooks. The content identified in the analysis focused mainly on technical areas. Social and health science content was only marginally present. Conclusions The diverse DiPH study programs allow academic public health specialists in Germany to develop specific profiles. There is a need for further development of modules with relevance to the respective degree program to achieve comprehensive competencies in DiPH. We encourage the uptake of our analysis to develop a core curriculum in DiPH among European public health programs. Key messages • Digitalization affects all areas of life, including healthcare systems and public health. Preparing the future workforce already during their training is crucial to enable them to lead the change. • German public health programs are not fit to prepare students for their professions. Developing DiPH curricula with pre-defined and updated competencies will strengthen programs in Germany and beyond.

JA ImpleMENTAL Implementing the Belgian Best Practice on Community Mental Health system Reform

Abstract Mental health challenges affect more than one in six people across the EU. In order to support Member States to proceed with mental health care system transformation and suicide prevention JA ImpleMENTAL, was initiated on the request of Member States, on October 2021 under the European Union 3rd Health Program. The JA consists of 39 organizations from 21 countries, more than 180 persons are working. Two advisory bodies support the consortium and provide their insights and expertise, a stakeholder forum with 10 key European Organizations in Mental Health including EUPHA Mental Health Section and WHO Europe and OECD, and the Member State Policy Committee which ensures the involvement of ministries and enables the practices to be embedded in health systems. Within the 11 countries implementing pilots under the Belgium model using a common Implementation Strategy, a total 163 activities are implemented under the 5 following key areas: 62 on structural measures needed for the establishment of local networks promoting a user’s centered, human’s right based recovery approach, 43 for the development and/or transformation of mental health services, 22 on training & capacity building in support of the reform and cultural change, 22 on continuous communication, information and awareness raising, and 13 on data collection, monitoring and evaluation. An analysis of MS pilot action plans shows that most service transformation efforts have concentrated on: defining care pathways for people at risk and for those with mild to severe mental health conditions including smooth transition from child and adolescent to Adult Mental Health services, as well as from inpatient to community services, the nomination of case managers for assisting individuals to their recovery process the development of individual service plans, the Involvement of users in various layers of service delivery including peer support and the provision of assertive treatment through mobile units.

GIS and statistics to analyze scale change consequences on medical desert classification in France

Abstract Background Accessibility is a crucial way to overcome geographical restrictions and provides a path for alleviating the medical desert. Less attention has been paid to the choice of spatial unit in the effect of healthcare multi-accessibility. Inside the OASES European program, the France team proposes to create medical desert classification at the municipality level. The contribution of this study is to highlight the consequences of the choice of spatial scale on spatial distribution and the discrepancies between medical desert classifications. Methods Analyses were carried out in metropolitan France and overseas departments, at the commune scale and two other supra-communal scales used by public policies in France. For each spatial unit, a multidimensional and professional classification has been conducted using a three-step method: scores, principal component analysis and clustering. To demonstrate the presence of spatial dependence and to measure homogeneity between classifications joint count autocorrelation indicators and Theil’s indexes were applied. Results Our results present 7 classes of municipalities, and 5 classes of EPCI or living territories according to their level of healthcare accessibility, the dynamic of supply, and the needs of the population. Spatial representation of the classification demonstrates greater variability at the municipality level than other supra scales. Informative contrasted classes at the municipality level disappeared in favor of the middle class in all accessibility at supra scales. The results demonstrate that spatial dependence between areas at the municipality level reduced the scale effect. Conclusions Spatial approaches have become increasingly popular since they enable decision-makers to identify priority areas and allocate resources. Recognizing the instability across various scales is therefore crucial for thinking about the optimal unit of data aggregation when investigating the medical desert. Key messages • Choice of the scale is a mix between public policy decisions and data availability. • Contiguity constraint is a way to reduce the loss of information after aggregation.

The status of health information systems and digital transformation in the European Region

Abstract Although there have been investments in health information systems (HIS) and digitalization, WHO/Europe’s work with Member States (MS) shows that much can be improved still. Typically, there is a strong focus on data collection, but less on analysis and knowledge translation, resulting in available data not being optimally used to support decision making. Standards for data exchange and interoperability have not yet been fully implemented. Efforts are underway to train healthcare professionals, yet only half of MS have developed policies for digital health literacy. Fewer still have implemented a comprehensive digital inclusion plan, leaving disadvantaged populations at risk of falling behind. In line with the traditionally strong focus on HIS strengthening in WHO’s work, the European Programme of Work 2020-2025 (EPW) emphasises the need for MS to improve and modernise their HIS to ensure that decisions are data driven. One of the EPW flagship initiatives is Empowerment through Digital Health, promoting the leveraging and scaling up of digital transformation for better health. The Regional digital health action plan for the WHO European Region 2023-2030 outlines the strategic actions needed to achieve this, while fully respecting the values of equity, solidarity and human rights. Collaboration with MS and international partners is vital in this work. WHO/Europe has established several MS-driven health information networks in the past, most notably the European Health Information Initiative (the EHII). The EHII in 2023 has made a restart in the form of the European Health Information Network (HIN). The HIN will guide the work under the EU-funded action ‘Supporting Member States in the WHO European Region in strengthening health information systems and boosting health data governance’, which will be implemented by WHO/Europe. This strong European Commission and WHO/Europe partnership will be a main catalyst for HIS improvement in the Region the coming years.

Long-term exposure to fine particulate matter constituents, genetic susceptibility, and incident heart failure among 411 807 adults.

Long-term fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure has been linked to incident heart failure (HF), but the impacts of its constituents remain unknown. We aimed to investigate the associations of PM2.5 constituents with incident HF, and further evaluate the modification effects of genetic susceptibility. PM2.5 and its constituents, including elemental carbon (EC), organic matter (OM), ammonium (NH4 +), nitrate (NO3 -), and sulfate (SO4 2-), were estimated using the European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme model applied to the UK (EMEP4UK) driven by Weather and Research Forecast model meteorology. A polygenic risk score (PRS) was calculated to represent genetic susceptibility to HF. We employed Cox models to evaluate the associations of PM2.5 constituents with incident HF. Quantile-based g-computation model was used to identify the main contributor of PM2.5 constituents. Among 411 807 individuals in the UK Biobank, 7554 participants developed HF during a median follow-up of 12.05 years. The adjusted hazard ratios of HF for each interquartile range increase in PM2.5, EC, OM, NH4 +, NO3 -, and SO4 2- were 1.50 (1.46-1.54), 1.31 (1.27-1.34), 1.12 (1.09-1.15), 1.42 (1.41-1.44), 1.26 (1.23-1.29), and 1.25 (1.24-1.26), respectively. EC (43%) played the most important role, followed by NH4 + and SO4 2-. Moreover, synergistic additive interactions accounted for 9-16% of the HF events in individuals exposed to both PM2.5, NH4 +, NO3 -, and SO4 2- and PRS. Long-term exposure to PM2.5 constituents may elevate HF risk, and EC was the major contributor. Additive effects of PM2.5 constituents and PRS on HF risk were revealed.

European agrifood and forestry education for a sustainable future - Gap analysis from an informatics approach

Background The NextFood Project (www.nextfood-project.eu) started work in 2018 to identify ‘Categories of Skills’ that students should be equipped with to address the upcoming global challenges within agrifood and forestry disciplines, and involved concepts such as sustainability, technological adaptation and networking. This study is based on the initial skills and competencies mapping, but takes a different methodological approach. Instead of investigating what the research literature and professionals think are important skills for the future, this study asks how existing education programmes include or exclude these skills in the description of their programs. Methods Python-based web-scraping scripts were used to collect texts from a selection of European Masters program websites, which were then analysed using statistical tools. A total of 14 countries, 27 universities, 1303 European Masters programs, 3305 web-pages and almost two million words were studied using this approach. Results While agrifood and forestry Masters programs were aligned with the NextFood Project ‘Categories of Skills’ equal to or more often than unrelated Masters programs, we found evidence for the relative underuse of words associated with networking skills, such as 舖collaboration舗, 舖communication舗 and 舖teamwork舗. Agriculture-related programs used these words the least among the agrifood Masters programs. In contrast, agrifood programs used words associated with sustainability and system thinking more than the non-agrifood Masters programs. Conclusions The informatics approach provides evidence that many European agrifood and forestry Masters programs are following the educational paths for meeting future challenges as outlined by the NextFood Project, with the possible exception of networking skills. This approach allows a complementary and time-efficient overview of the current state of education in the agrifood system in Europe.

Impact of methane and other precursor emission reductions on surface ozone in Europe: scenario analysis using the European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme (EMEP) Meteorological Synthesizing Centre – West (MSC-W) model

Abstract. The impacts of future methane (CH4) and other precursor emission changes are investigated for surface ozone (O3) in the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) region excluding North America and Israel (the EMEP region, for European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme) for the year 2050. The analysis includes a current legislation (CLE) and maximum feasible technical reduction (MFR) scenario, as well as a scenario that combines MFRs with an additional dietary shift that also meets the Paris Agreement objectives with respect to greenhouse gas emissions (LOW). For each scenario, background CH4 concentrations are calculated using a probabilistic Earth system model emulator and combined with other precursor emissions in a three-dimensional Eulerian chemistry-transport model. While focus is placed on peak season maximum daily 8 h average (MDA8) O3 concentrations, a range of other indicators for health and vegetation impacts are also discussed. Our analysis shows that roughly one-third of the total peak season MDA8 reduction achieved between the 2050 CLE and MFR scenarios is attributable to CH4 reductions, resulting predominantly from CH4 emission reductions outside of the EMEP region. The impact of other precursor emission reductions is split nearly evenly between the reductions inside and outside of the EMEP region. However, the relative importance of CH4 and other precursor emission reductions is shown to depend on the choice of O3 indicator, though indicators sensitive to peak O3 show generally consistent results. The analysis also highlights the synergistic impacts of CH4 mitigation as reducing solely CH4 achieves, beyond air quality improvement, nearly two-thirds of the total global warming reduction calculated for the LOW scenario compared to the CLE case.

Catalogue of coastal-based instances with bathymetric and topographic data

Abstract. We provide a catalogue of 17 700 unique coastal-based instances distributed throughout the globe and derived from bathymetric and topographic data made publicly available by the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO) as of 2022. These instances, or digital elevation models (DEMs), are delivered in the form of raster grids with a 15 arcsec resolution and are divided equally into three libraries, namely A, B, and C. In a given library, the dimensions range from a minimum of 10×10 cells to a maximum of 300×300 cells, with an incremental step of 5, i.e. 59 unique dimensions with 100 instances per dimension. In addition, for each dimension, these instances are ordered by increasing number of maritime cells and have in common the presence of a unique maritime-connected component with a ratio of maritime cells lying between 25 % and 95 % so as to cover a broad spectrum of different coastline geometries. In this paper, we will describe in detail the procedure used for their automated generation. The resulting catalogue can be downloaded from Zenodo, a general-purpose repository operated by CERN (European Organisation for Nuclear Research) and developed under the European OpenAIRE programme, at the following persistent address: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10530247 (Thuillier et al., 2024c). Additionally, a set of 18 colour palettes specifically designed for the visualisation of DEMs has been derived for this occasion and is available at the following address: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10530296 (Thuillier et al., 2024e). Both of these repositories come with comprehensive documentation.

EURAD state-of-the-art report: development and improvement of numerical methods and tools for modeling coupled processes in the field of nuclear waste disposal

The Strategic Research Agenda (SRA; https://www.ejp-eurad.eu/publications/eurad-sra) of the European Joint Programme on Radioactive Waste Management (EURAD; https://www.ejp-eurad.eu/) describes the scientific and technical domains and sub-domains and knowledge management needs of common interest between EURAD participant organizations. Theme number 7 is entitled “Performance assessment, safety case development and safety analyses.” A list of research and development priorities and activities of common interest to be addressed within EURAD for theme 7 have been established. Amongst others, the Understanding and modelling of multi-physical Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical-Chemical coupled processes (THMC) occurring in radioactive waste disposal is a major and permanent issue to support optimization of design and safety case abstraction. To tackle this challenge a research work package entitled “DONUT: Development and improvement of numerical methods and tools for modelling coupled processes” has been conducted within the EURAD join programming initiative. The purpose of this work package is to improve/develop methods or numerical tools in order to go a step further in development of (i) relevant, performant and cutting-edge numerical methods that can easily be implemented in existing or new tools, in order to carry out high-performance computing to facilitate the study of highly coupled processes in large systems, (ii) numerical scale transition schemes for coupled processes, (iii) innovative numerical methods to carry out uncertainty and sensitivity analyses. In this paper the work carried out within the DONUT work package is put in perspective regarding the existing concept and literature on the field. It does not pretend to be exhaustive but rather to put emphasis on particular issues tackled during the project.

Trends of European School of Urology (ESU) training and resident education: an overview of 2 decades of EAU education programme.

Over the last 2 decades, various education and training programmes have been launched by the European School of Urology (ESU) on behalf of the European Association of Urology (EAU) Education Office. These include e-learning platforms, in-person meetings, courses, podcasts, webinars, sub-specialisation meetings and the European Urology Resident Education Programme (EUREP), all of which aim to achieve standardisation in urological education (SISE) and training at the highest level. Data from the last 2 decades of all ESU activities were collected by the EAU/ESU office and analyzed for attendance, geographical, gender and age trends. Demographic data on registrations and attendances at EUREP were also monitored and analysed. A descriptive analysis of participation and trends is provided. A total of 4750 participants have completed ESU courses (including guideline courses, specialization courses and webinar courses). Similarly, a total of 5958 trainees attended the EUREP from 2004 to 2022 of which the male: female ratio was 3.75:1. However, the proportion of females increased 3.5-fold from 10.7% in 2004 to 37.1% in 2022(p < 0.001). There is a growing interest in the meeting, with increasing registrations over this time (353 in 2004 to 599 in 2023, p < 0.001). The mean age of participants is constantly decreasing (32.6 years in 2004 to 31.54 in 2022), with a mean yearly decrease of -0.18% (p < 0.001). ESU courses have had increasing interest and participation from young urologists worldwide. During EUREP, while the trainee age has decreased, there has been a surge in the proportion of female trainees. ESU is providing all modes of education and training across the world with both virtual and in-person meetings and courses, which would help in the development and preparation of urologists of the future and provide the best patient care.

Monitoring of 260 pesticides in extra virgin olive oil and risk assessment for consumers within the framework of the European multiannual control program

The aim of the present research was to develop and validate a robust analytical method for the monitoring of 260 pesticide residues in Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) expanding the 185 molecules requested by the multiannual control program. The analytical procedure included an ultrasound-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction followed by low-pressure gas chromatography (LP-GC) and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC), both coupled to triple quadrupole mass spectrometry. Matrix-matched calibration curves showed good linearity with coefficients of determination greater than 0.999. Accuracy values ranged from 65.5 % to 122.3 % and from 61.1 % to 133.3 % for LP-GC and UHPLC, respectively. The recoveries ranged from 14.0 % to 177.9 %.Fifty commercial EVOO, from Italian and EU production, were analyzed to assess pesticide contamination during the 2021–2023 harvesting seasons. The research focused on evaluating consumer risk by assessing both chronic and acute dietary exposure, using the Pesticide Residue Intake Model developed by the EFSA.

Exploring inclusivity in entrepreneurship education provision: A European study

This paper explores inclusivity in entrepreneurship education (EE) provision. This is an important area of research given the growth in EE provision globally and the intention for it to be a discipline and a competence accessible to everyone. Drawing on data from nine European Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and their respective entrepreneurship programs, our core research question asks: how inclusive are European entrepreneurship education programs, and how might their inclusivity be enhanced? Answering this question could help raise awareness of the need for inclusive EE, identify specific student cohorts who are potentially excluded and help widen EE participation generally. We contribute to the existing body of literature in this field by underscoring the significance of inclusivity in EE programs, proposing an adapted version of an existing inclusivity-proofing tool as a first step for HEIs on their inclusivity journey and offering insights designed to bolster HEIs' EE inclusivity efforts.

Decolonising the European conservation curriculum

European conservation-restoration training programmes offer curricula that tend to be rooted in Eurocentrism. Over the last decades, conservation scholars have called for a re-interpretation of the sector, based on a need to acknowledge and respond to global social developments, including the call for decolonisation—calls that would naturally change training programmes. In Australia and Canada, for example, training programmes long ago embarked on a path of reforming their curricula and including non-Eurocentric ways of conserving. On the other hand, higher education programmes in conservation in Europe have only recently begun to discuss alternatives to their current curricula. To address this concern, this article focusses on approaches aimed at ‘decolonising the curriculum’ as a means for European conservation training programmes to achieve greater alignment with current social developments. Such approaches may serve as a strategic device for formulating recommendations geared to triggering curricula transformations and bringing them into line with major social issues in our contemporary world, as well as to provide a broader and more diverse epistemic foundation for the professional efforts of future conservation experts.

The European Statistics Awards for Nowcasting: A New Approach to Engage with the Scientific Community and to Foster Improved Timeliness of Official Statistics

The European Statistics Awards Programme is a multiannual program for engaging with, and tapping into the potential of, the research and innovation community at large. This is achieved through competitions with pecuniary prizes for the best performers. One of the strands within that program offers awards for the accurate nowcasting of monthly time series of interest to policymakers. This paper presents the design of the nowcasting competition as well as the performance of the best entries of the first annual round. In terms of accuracy, the competition has generated promising results—which do however need further fine-tuning before being possible to deploy in statistical production. The competitions feature a particular prize for submissions having a potential for scaling up to regular statistical production—and in response to this, teams have submitted ample documentation (including code). The awards program should also generate experience that the official statistics community can learn from. This paper demonstrates how the multi-annual nature of the program has allowed various design changes to be implemented for the last nowcasting round. The main work now lies ahead: the paper outlines the plans for further developing the most promising competition contributions, potentially leading to new Eurostat experimental statistics products.

Розвиток жіночого інноваційного підприємництва в Україні у процесі європейської інтеграції

Introduction. The process of European integration of Ukraine opens up new opportunities for the development of innovative entrepreneurship, in particular for women entrepreneurs. Economic and social challenges related to the post-war reconstruction of the country and the need to comply with the EU standards make the issue of effective use of the potential of women’s entrepreneurship in the innovative field relevant. Problem Statement. Determination of ways and mechanisms of using the opportunities of European integration to stimulate the development of women’s innovative entrepreneurship in Ukraine. The purpose is to assess the current state of women’s innovative entrepreneurship in Ukraine, to identify prospects for its development in the context of European integration, and to develop recommendations for its support. Methods. Theoretical analysis of scientific sources, study of European practices of supporting women’s innovative entrepreneurship, comparative analysis and generalization were used. Results. The key directions of using European integration for the development of women’s innovative entrepreneurship in Ukraine embrace: 1) adaptation of European financing and business acceleration programs; 2) implementation of European standards of gender equality; 3) participation in European networks and exchange of experience; 4) adaptation of European educational programs. The implementation of these directions will contribute to economic growth, the creation of new jobs and the general elevation of the role of women in society. Conclusions. European integration creates favorable conditions for the development of women’s innovative entrepreneurship in Ukraine through access to new markets, financial resources and advanced practices. The key success factors are the adaptation of Ukrainian legislation to EU standards, the creation of specialized support programs and the development of educational initiatives for women entrepreneurs. The implementation of the proposed recommendations will contribute to the growth of the number of women’s innovative enterprises and the strengthening of their role in the economic development of Ukraine.

Proposal of a Cost-Effective and Adaptive Customized Driver Inattention Detection Model Using Time Series Analysis and Computer Vision

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, such as Forward Collision Warning and Lane Departure Warning, play a crucial role in accident prevention by alerting drivers to potential hazards. With the advent of fully autonomous driving technology that requires no driver input, there is now a greater emphasis on monitoring the state of vehicle occupants. This is particularly important because, in emergency situations where control must suddenly be transferred to an unprepared occupant, the risk of accidents increases significantly. To mitigate this risk, new monitoring technologies are being developed to analyze driver behavior and detect states of inattention or drowsiness. In response to the emerging demands of driver monitoring technology, we have developed the Customized Driver Inattention Detection Model (CDIDM). This model employs video analysis and statistical techniques to accurately and rapidly classify information on drivers’ gazes. The CDIDM framework defines the components of inattentive or drowsy driving based on the Driver Monitoring System (DMS) safety standards set by the European New Car Assessment Programme (EuroNCAP). By defining six driving behavior-related scenarios, we have improved the accuracy of driver inattention assessment. The CDIDM estimates the driver’s gaze while simultaneously analyzing data in real-time. To minimize computational resource usage, this model incorporates a series of preprocessing steps that facilitate efficient time series data analysis, utilizing techniques such as DTW Barycenter Averaging (DBA) and K-means clustering. This results in a robust driver attention monitoring model based on time series classification.

Comparing LUCAS Soil and national systems: Towards a harmonized European Soil monitoring network

A recent assessment states that 60–70% of soils in Europe are considered degraded. Protecting such valuable resource require knowledge on soil status through monitoring systems. In Europe, different types of monitoring networks currently exist in parallel. Many EU Member states (MS) developed their own national soil information monitoring system (N-SIMS), some being in place for decades. In parallel in 2009, the European Commission extended the periodic Land Use/Land Cover Area Frame Survey (LUCAS) led by EUROSTAT to sample and analyse the main properties of topsoil in EU in order to develop a homogeneous dataset for EU.Both sources of information are needed to support European policies on soil health evaluation. However, a question remains whether the assessment obtained by using soil properties from both monitoring programs (N-SIMS and LUCAS Soil) are comparable, and what could be the limitations of using either one dataset or the other.Conducted in the context of European Joint Programme (EJP) SOIL, this study shows the results of a comparison between N-SIMS and LUCAS Soil programs among 12 different EU member states including BE, DE, DK, EE, ES, FR, DE, HU, IT, NL, PL, SE and SK. The comparison was done on: (i) the sampling strategies including site densities, land cover and soil type distribution; (ii) the statistical distribution of three soil properties (organic carbon, pH and clay content); (iii) two potential indicators of soil quality (i.e. OC/Clay ratio and pH classes). The results underlined substantial differences in soil properties statistical distributions between N-SIMS and LUCAS Soil in many member states, particularly for woodland and grassland soils, affecting the evaluation of soil health using indicators. Such differences might be explained by both the monitoring strategy and sampling or analytical protocols exposing the potential effect of data source on European and national policies. The results demonstrate the need to work towards data harmonization and in the light of the Soil Monitoring Law, to carefully design the future of soil monitoring in Europe taking into account both LUCAS Soil and N-SIMS considering the significant impact of the monitoring strategies and protocols on soil health indicators.

Pediatric Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine and Dosing Schedule Perceptions Among Health Care Providers and Caregivers in Germany, France, Spain, and Greece.

Most European infant national immunization programs (NIPs) recommend pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs), which currently cover 10-15 serotypes administered in a three-dose schedule (two primary plus one booster). Recently, a PCV covering 20 serotypes that is administered in a four-dose schedule (three primary plus one booster) was licensed. An online survey was administered to collect data from health care providers (HCPs) and caregivers of children aged 0-5 (including expectant mothers) in four European countries (Germany, France, Spain, and Greece). All caregiver respondents had a shared or full responsibility to make health decisions for their child. Data on opinions, perceptions, and openness to a change in childhood vaccination dosing schedules were collected, along with demographic information for HCPs as well as caregivers. A total of 601 HCPs and 1954 caregivers were recruited across the four countries. Nearly all HCPs (93%) agreed that broader serotype coverage against pneumococcal disease for children is a significant unmet need, and 92% had a "sense of urgency" to vaccinate children. Both HCPs and caregivers were supportive of an additional PCV dose and doctor visit, assuming it provided at least 20% more serotype coverage than what is currently available. Caregivers strongly agreed on the importance of full vaccination for pneumococcal disease, even if an extra dose and visit to the doctor was required. HCPs and caregivers were virtually unanimous in their support for a PCV with broader serotype coverage and showed a subsequent willingness to include an extra infant dose/visit. These results can help guide broader discussions regarding public health policy and vaccine administration in the context of important efforts to reduce the global disease burden associated with pneumococcal disease.
