Effect of ultrasound-assisted EDTA and citric acid washing on heavy metal removal, residual heavy metal mobility, and sewage sludge quality.

We investigated the effects of ultrasound-assisted ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and citric acid (CA) washing on heavy metal (HM) removal, residual HM mobility, and sewage sludge quality. EDTA and CA washing of sewage sludge successfully reduced the total concentration of HMs after one round of washing, but the mobility of residual HMs increased significantly. The eluate had a high concentration of HMs and nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and total organic carbon), although the nutritional content of the sludge remained high. The three-phase ratio of the sludge after six rounds of washing by CA was closest to the ideal three-phase ratio, and the degree of influence on the physical structure of the soil after a land application was reduced, according to the fluctuation of generalized soil structure index (GSSI) and soil three-phase structure distance (STPSD) values. The results indicate that CA as an environmental-friendly washing agent can be the superior choice for sludge HM washing; single washing of sewage sludge may increase the mobility of residual HMs, so multiple washings should be considered for land application of sludge.

Removal behavior and mechanisms of cadmium and lead by coupled ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid washing and electrochemical reduction: influence of current conditions.

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) washing has been used extensively to remediate heavy metal-contaminated soils. Electrochemical reduction treatment of spent washing solution is an effective method of EDTA regeneration. However, at present, these two technologies are usually regarded as two independent treatment processes. This research raised a new heavy metal-contaminated soil treatment strategy-a combination technique of coupled EDTA washing and electrochemical reduction. We speculated that the combination of EDTA washing and electroreduction treatment could improve the efficiency of Cd and Pb removal from contaminated soil. In this study, the removal performance and mechanisms of Cd and Pb under different current conditions were investigated based on a coupling of EDTA washing and electrochemical reduction. The combination technique can increase Cd and Pb removal efficiencies by 13.37-15.24% and 14.91-27.05%, respectively, compared with EDTA washing alone. Sequential extraction analysis showed that the reducible fraction improved metal removal efficiency. The percentage of metal removed increased with an increased current value and EDTA concentration. In addition, pulse current mode removed more Cd and Pb than continuous current, although the difference was not significant (p > 0.05). However, pulse current could effectively eliminate the cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction, resulting in a further heavy metal deposition at the cathode. The combination technique exhibited enhanced removal efficiency due to EDTA regeneration in the suspension and the cathodic reduction reaction. The most cost-effective treatment in 48h was a pulse current mode of 32min on/16min off-32mA-EDTA-10mM, where 47.56% of Cd and 77.00% of Pb were removed from the soil with an electric energy consumption of 8.24 Wh.

Flotation of Seafloor Massive Sulfide Ores: Combination of Surface Cleaning and Deactivation of Lead-Activated Sphalerite to Improve the Separation Efficiency of Chalcopyrite and Sphalerite

The purpose of this study is to propose the flotation procedure of seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) ores to separate chalcopyrite and galena as froth and sphalerite, pyrite, and other gangue minerals as tailings, which is currently facing difficulties due to the presence of water-soluble compounds. The obtained SMS ore sample contains CuFeS2, ZnS, FeS2, SiO2, and BaSO4 in addition to PbS and PbSO4 as Pb minerals. Soluble compounds releasing Pb, Zn2+, Pb2+, and Fe2+/3+ are also contained. When anglesite co-exists, lead activation of sphalerite occurred, and thus sphalerite was recovered together with chalcopyrite as froth. To remove soluble compounds (e.g., anglesite) that have detrimental effects on the separation efficiency of chalcopyrite and sphalerite, surface cleaning pretreatment using ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) was applied before flotation. Although most of anglesite were removed and the recovery of chalcopyrite was improved from 19% to 81% at 20 g/t potassium amyl xanthate (KAX) after EDTA washing, the floatability of sphalerite was not suppressed. When zinc sulfate was used as a depressant for sphalerite after EDTA washing, the separation efficiency of chalcopyrite and sphalerite was improved due to deactivation of lead-activated sphalerite by zinc sulfate. The proposed flotation procedure of SMS ores—a combination of surface cleaning with EDTA to remove anglesite and the depression of lead-activated sphalerite by using zinc sulfate—could achieve the highest separation efficiency of chalcopyrite and sphalerite; that is, at 200 g/t KAX, the recoveries of chalcopyrite and sphalerite were 86% and 17%, respectively.

Roles of EDTA washing and Ca2+ regulation on the restoration of anammox granules inhibited by copper(II)

We investigated the feasibility of using ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) washing followed by Ca2+ enhancement for the recovery of anammox reactors inhibited by Cu(II). Kinetic experiments and batch activity assays were employed to determine the optimal concentration of EDTA and washing time; and the performance and physiological dynamics were tracked by continuous-flow monitoring to evaluate the long-term effects. The two-step desorption process revealed that the Cu in anammox granules was primarily introduced via adsorption (approximately, 80.5%), and the portion of Cu in the dispersible layer was predominant (accounting for 71.1%). Afterwards, the Cu internalized in the cells (approximately, 14.7%) could diffuse out of the cells and be gradually washed out of the reactor over the next 20 days. The Ca2+ addition that followed led to an accelerated nitrogen removal rate recovery slope (0.1491kgNm−3d−2) and a normal biomass growth rate (0.054d−1). The nitrogen removal rate returned to normal levels within 90 days and gradual improvements in granular characteristics were also achieved. Therefore, this study provides a new insight that externally removing the adsorbed heavy metals followed by internally repairing the metabolic system may represent an optimal restoration strategy for anammox consortium damaged by heavy metals.

Behavior and fate of copper ions in an anammox granular sludge reactor and strategies for remediation

In this study, the behavior, distribution and form dynamics of overloaded Cu(II) in anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) granular sludge reactors were investigated. The performance and physiological characteristics were tracked by continuous-flow monitoring to evaluate the long-term effects. High Cu loading (0.24gL−1d−1) exceeded sludge bearing capacity, and precipitation dominated the removal pathway. The Cu distribution migrated from the extracellular polymeric substances-bound to the cell-associated Cu and the Cu forms shifted from the weakly bound to strongly bound fractions over time. Pearson correlation and fluorescence spectra analyses showed that the increase in protein concentrations in the EPS was a clear self-defense response to Cu(II) stress. Two remediation strategies, i.e., ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) washing and ultrasound-enhanced EDTA washing, weakened the equilibrium metal partition coefficient from 5.8 to 0.45 and 0.34Lmg−1SS, respectively, thereby accelerating the external diffusion of the Cu that had accumulated in the anammox granules.

A novel strategy for accelerating the recovery of an anammox reactor inhibited by copper(II): EDTA washing combined with biostimulation via low-intensity ultrasound

Excessive heavy metals are inhibitory or even toxic to microorganisms in biological wastewater treatment systems. Given the promising prospects of anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox), this work details a novel remediation strategy for preventing anammox failure due to heavy metal overload (in this study, Cu(II) overload). The strategy involves combining ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) washing with bioactivity stimulation via low-intensity ultrasound. Kinetic experiments and batch activity assays were employed to determine the optimal concentration of EDTA and washing time, and changes in reactor performance and granule characteristics were tracked by continuous-flow monitoring to evaluate the long-term effects. The two-step desorption process revealed that the Cu in anammox granules was primarily introduced via adsorption (approximately 84.9%) and that low-energy adsorption sites were predominant (accounting for 58.6%). The Cu internalized in the cells (approximately 12.5%) could then diffuse out of the cells and be gradually washed out of the reactor within 20days. Thereafter, ultrasound irradiation at intervals of 8days contributed to accelerated performance, with a nitrogen removal rate (NRR) increasing rate of 0.1971kgNm−3d−2. The NRR was able to return to normal levels within 64days, whereas the recovery of dehydrogenase activity (DHA) was hysteretic, requiring approximately 110days. Gradual improvements in granule diameter, settling properties, extracellular polymeric substances and heme content were also detected. Overall, these results demonstrate that external removal of the adsorbed Cu followed by internal repair of the metabolic system may represent an important and useful recovery method in wastewater treatment plant operation.

Enhanced washing for Cr(VI) removal from contaminated soil using EDTA and microwave radiation

Soils contaminated with Cr are commonly found. This study investigated Cr(VI) removal from contaminated soil using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and microwave-enhanced washing. The effects of microwave radiation time and power on Cr(VI) removal were also investigated. Results showed that the removal percentages of Cr(VI) with 0.01 and 0.05 mol/L EDTA were 61 and 85 %, respectively. These values increased by 21 and 30 % under microwave radiation (900 W, 5 min) compared with those without microwave treatment. The final Cr content in contaminated soil was 453.25 mg/kg, which was below the Class B limit (610 mg/kg) for soil quality in China for an exhibition area. In addition, the processing time to achieve the same removal efficiency was greatly reduced from 8 h to 5 min. Microwave-assisted EDTA washing can be a promising remediation method for Cr(VI)-contaminated sites.

EDTA-Enhanced Thermal Washing of Contaminated Dredged Marine Sediments for Heavy Metal Removal

Preliminary analysis on dredged marine sediments from Benoi basin in Singapore was carried out showing elevated concentrations of Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd, Cr and Ni. Ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) thermal washing experiments were conducted for heavy metal extraction at temperature 100 °C. Results indicated the significant efficiency of thermal washing to extract Pb, Zn and Ni. However, there was little or no influence in the removal of Cu and Cr and a slight effect to Cd indicating multiple mechanisms. In addition, agitation was found to have great influence on the removal efficiency of heavy metals as experiments without agitation performed lesser or no extraction due to limited contact of the washing solution and the dredged sediment. Sequencing processes of thermal treatment followed by EDTA washing showed limited performance, likely due to thermal stabilization of the contaminants particularly at low liquid-to-soil (L/S) ratio. Furthermore, sequential extraction analysis on the metal speciation was performed before and after thermal washing. It was revealed that metals mainly extracted from fractions bound to carbonates and Fe-Mn oxides, the relative mobile fraction. On the contrary, metals in the residual fraction displayed a considerable stability.

Changes of metal forms in sewage sludge after EDTA washing

AbstractHeavy metals in sewage sludge can be classified as difficult solid waste with potential hazards for environment. This report examined how an aqueous solution of EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) washing changes selected heavy metals’ (Zn, Cu, Cd, Ni, Pb) fractionation in sewage sludge. The analyzed sludge was dried and homogenized sewage sludge was obtained from a municipal treatment plant. The samples of sewage sludge were extracted with 0.1 M EDTA solution for 24 h. Primary as well as extracted sewage sludge was examined for the total content of heavy metals and speciation of mentioned heavy metals using BCR sequential extraction procedure. Analyzed sewage sludge samples were quite significantly contaminated with heavy metals. The total content of zinc, copper, cadmium, nickel, and lead in initial sewage sludge was equal to: 2306.5, 263.7, 9.0, 118.0, and 117.0 mg kg−1 dM, respectively. Agar was prepared from Gelidium amansii collected from Jeju Island, South Korea. This agar preparation has high gel strength and low sulfate content compared with G. amansii agar from Morocco. Accordingly, agarose was made from the Jeju agar through the consecutive refining processes of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) extraction and ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) washing. The physicochemical properties of the resulting agarose were compared with those from agarose prepared using only DMSO extraction. Consecutive DMSO extraction and EDTA washing more strongly affected the physicochemical properties of the agarose (purified agarose) compared with the use of DMSO extraction alone. These properties were similar to those of commercial agarose used for electrophoresis. In DNA electrophoresis, the separation and movement speed of the purified agarose were similar to those of the commercial agarose. In a <TEX>$^{13}C$</TEX> NMR analysis, the purified agarose exhibited the same carbon peak as the commercial agarose. When observed under scanning electron microscopy, the agar had an even and smooth surface without irregularities or pores, and the purified agarose had a wide surface area with a large number of pores; the commercial agarose had an irregular surface that would allow the solvent to easily permeate. These results illustrate that the physicochemical properties of agarose prepared from DMSO extraction and EDTA washing were more effective than those observed after DMSO extraction alone; thus, these processes used in succession will be useful in agarose industries.

Influence of EDTA washing on the species and mobility of heavy metals residual in soils

Aiming to estimate the potential risk of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)-enhanced soil washing, the heavy metal species and their mobility in the washed soil under different combinations were investigated by batch leaching tests and the sequential extraction procedure. Results demonstrate that the metal removal efficiency was rather low (less than 12%), partially due to the significant Ca dissolution and strong bonding between metals and the soil as well as the insufficient EDTA dosage. The washing combination of 0.0005 M EDTA and half-an-hour washing can enhance the instant mobility of Ni, Zn and Pb possibly owing to the slow detachment of EDTA-destabilized metals. Metal fractionation also exhibits the corresponding increase in their labile exchangeable fractions. Therefore, a more concentrated EDTA solution for a longer duration often decreased their mobility. The increase in some fractions of a curtain metal implies the redistribution of this metal during the EDTA soil washing. The pathway of such a redistribution may vary for different metals, but the redistribution to organic matter is often a slow process, while that to carbonates or Fe/Mn oxides is a faster one and even may occur in a half hour washing with 0.0005 M EDTA solution. These redistribution processes may also increase the metal chemical availability. Therefore, we should prudently control the chelating reagent concentration and washing duration to finally minimize the mobility and availability of the remaining heavy metals when designing the soil washing for the remediation of metal-contaminated soils.

Optimizing the molarity of a EDTA washing solution for saturated-soil remediation of trace metal contaminated soils

Three experiments were conducted to optimize the use of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) for reclaiming urban soils contaminated with trace metals. As compared to Na 2EDTA, (NH 4) 2EDTA extracted 60% more Zn and equivalent amounts of Cd, Cu and Pb from a sandy loam. When successively saturating and draining loamy sand columns during a washing cycle, which submerged it once with a (NH 4) 2EDTA wash and four times with deionised water, the post-wash rinses largely contributed to the total cumulative extraction of Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn. Both the washing solution and the deionised water rinses were added in a 2:5 liquid to soil (L:S) weight ratio. For equal amounts of EDTA, concentrating the washing solution and applying it and the ensuing rinses in a smaller 1:5 L:S weight ratio, instead of a 2:5 L:S weight ratio, increased the extraction of targeted Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn.

Reactivation of severely aged commercial three-way catalysts by washing with weak EDTA and oxalic acid solutions

Ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) which is a well-known reagent for its metal extraction efficiency was studied for the first time towards the improvement of the catalytic activity and oxygen storage and release properties (OSC) of severely aged commercial three-way catalysts (TWC) on a laboratory scale. Optimization of the experimental parameters of EDTA-washing procedure of TWC was carried out by varying the washing time, volumetric flow rate, and temperature of EDTA solution. The EDTA-washing procedure of TWC was compared with that of oxalic acid-washing regarding their efficiency in removing P, Pb, S, Ca, Zn, Fe, Cu, Cr, Ni, and Mn, all known TWC contaminants that many of them cause severe deterioration of TWC's activity and oxygen storage and release properties. EDTA appears to be significantly efficient in removing Pb, Zn, Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu and Ni metal contaminants and sulfur but not of phosphorus (P). Phosphorus-containing species were found to be efficiently removed from the aged TWCs after oxalic acid washing. All regeneration procedures applied led to a significant partial recovery of catalytic activity of TWC (CO, CxHy and NOx conversions) under real exhaust gas conditions (dynamometer tests) due to the removal of large amounts of contaminants accumulated on the aged TWC. The washing procedures using oxalic acid alone or in combination with EDTA led to more significant improvements of both catalytic and OSC performance compared with those of EDTA washing alone. This was due to the ability of oxalic acid to remove P-containing compounds which appear to be one of the main causes of commercial three-way catalyst deactivation.
