Under Water Superelastic Porous Nanofibrous Sponge for Efficient RNA Separation and Purification.

Developing monolithic materials for chromatography columns with a novel interconnected porous structure is vital for the enhancement of the separation efficiency of RNA purification processes. Herein, a porous nanofibrous sponge (PNFS) is constructed by freeze molding and freeze-drying a nanofiber dispersion with ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer nanofibers as the skeleton, chitosan (CS) and polyethylenimine (PEI) as the binders, and glutaraldehyde (GA) as the crosslinking agent. The results show that when the CS content of the dispersion is 1.5 wt %, PNFS demonstrates a high static adsorption capacity of 406.5 mg/g (30.7 mg/m2) and a dynamic adsorption capacity of 382.6 mg/g (28.9 mg/m2) at a flow rate of 1 mm/min. Moreover, PNFS shows a high specific adsorption performance toward RNA in the presence of bovine serum albumin, lecithin, or DNA by adjusting the solution pH value and the method of gradient elution. Besides, PNFS presents exceptional performance in the rapid separation of RNA from HT22 cells without degradation. This result can be attributed to optimized morphology, pore structure, and comprehensive performance of PNFS, benefiting from the synergistic effect of the highly oriented porous structure and CS-PEI interaction derived from the high-density adsorption ligands on the channel walls of PNFS. This work provided an efficient strategy to handle the permeability/adsorptivity trade-off for ion-exchange chromatographic materials.

Synergistic effect of modified ethylene-vinyl acetate and asphaltenes on improving the flow properties of model oil

The effect of alcoholic polyethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) product ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVAL) on the low-temperature flow properties of model oil containing asphaltene (ASP) was investigated. The change of wax crystal microscopic morphology of model oil before and after modification were examined, and the influence of asphaltene mass fraction on the rheological improvement effect of EVAL was analyzed. The composite system of EVAL and asphaltene significantly reduced the pour point, gel point, apparent viscosity, storage modulus and loss modulus of waxy oil at low temperatures. When the EVAL concentration is 400 ppm and the asphaltene mass fraction is 0.5 wt%, the synergistic effect of the two is optimal, which can reduce the pour point by 17 °C and the modulus value by more than 98%. The introduction of EVAL strengthens the interaction between asphaltenes and wax crystals, forming EVAL-ASP aggregates, which promote the adsorption of wax crystals on asphaltenes to form composite particles, and the polar groups prevent the aggregation of wax crystals and reduce the size of wax crystals, thus greatly improving the fluidity of waxy oils.

Innovating a EVOH composite coating towards outstanding H2 barrier and anti-corrosion properties

Concerning the mitigating leakage and hydrogen-induced embrittlement during the conveyance of hydrogen (H2), we have developed an innovative dual-layer composite coating that exhibits exceptional hydrogen gas barrier properties and good resistance to corrosion. Using a bottom-top approach combining hot pressing with spin-coating techniques, the bottom Ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) layer with glass flakes (GF) serves as an effective hydrogen gas barrier and the top fluorosilicone resin (FSR) layer with composite nanofiller possesses good corrosion resistance, ensuring the functional integrity of the EVOH layer. The composite coating shows an exemplary low hydrogen gas transmission rate (H2 GTR) value of 2.858 cm3/(m2·24 h·0.1 MPa), representing a substantial decrease of 99.98 % compared to the FSR coating and 15 times more effective than commercial gas barrier films. Moreover, even after a 90-day immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution, the coating maintains an impressive impedance at 0.01 Hz (|Z|0.01 Hz) of 1.0 × 1011 O·cm2. The composite coating is exposed to 2 MPa hydrogen for 7 days, and we find that it still sustains outstanding hydrogen gas barrier and anti-corrosion properties.

Polymer-Based Room-Temperature Phosphorescence Materials Exhibiting Emission Lifetimes up to 4.6 s under Ambient Conditions.

The long-emission-lifetime nature of room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials lays the foundation of their applications in diverse areas. Despite the advantage of mechanical property, processability and solvent dispersity, the emission lifetimes of polymer-based room-temperature phosphorescence materials remain not particularly long because of the labile nature of organic triplet excited states under ambient conditions. Specifically, ambient phosphorescence lifetime (τP) longer than 2 s and even 4 s have rarely been reported in polymer systems. Here, luminescent compounds with small phosphorescence rate on the order of approximately 10-1 s-1 are designed, ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) as polymer matrix and antioxidant 1010 to protect organic triplets are employed, and ultralong phosphorescence lifetime up to 4.6 s under ambient conditions by short-term and low-power excitation are achieved. The resultant materials exhibit high afterglow brightness, long afterglow duration, excellent processability into large area thin films, high transparency and thermal stability, which display promising anticounterfeiting and data encryption functions.

Hierarchical biocatalytic membranes embedded with trypsin–inorganic hybrid nanoflowers for effective β-lactoglobulin hydrolysis

β-lactoglobulin (β-LG) is a significant allergen in milk. Enzymatic hydrolysis of β-LG produces peptides with low allergenicity and improved functionality. The biocatalytic membranes combine enzyme function and membrane separation in one step, but is still challenging for proteolysis. Herein, the biocatalytic membranes embedded with trypsin-inorganic hybrid nanoflowers are developed by a facile and green method for β-LG hydrolysis. Ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVAL) nanofibers are fabricated as 3D scaffolding on the membrane surface and trypsin-copper phosphate nanoflowers are in-situ grown in the porous structure of membranes. The nanoflowers are uniformly entrapped in the EVAL nanofiber layer and preferentially grow in the EVAL nanofibers layer, leading to the hierarchical structure of membranes. The trypsin loading of the nanoflowers membrane is approximate to 282.1 µg/cm2. Lower Michaelis-Menten constants Km prove the better affinity of Cu3(PO4)2-TR nanoflower membrane with substrates during filtration than that in static mode, even than free trypsin. The hierarchical structure of the membranes ensures both the enhanced trypsin-substrate contacts and low mass transfer resistance during the β-LG filtration. This work not only presents a novel concept of enzyme immobilized biocatalytic membranes, but also offers a sustainable solution for high-performance proteolysis.

Arterial Embolization as a Prominent Option in the Treatment of Hemorrhoid Diseases

Hemorrhoidal disease (HD) is the most common anorectal disease, affecting millions of people worldwide. The most common clinical picture is rectal bleeding, which significantly impairs the quality of life of patients. Treatment of HD varies from diet and lifestyle changes to radical surgery, depending on the degree and severity of symptoms. Endovascular embolization of superior rectal artery (SRA), known as emborrhoid technique, has recently emerged as a promising minimally invasive approach. Because hemorrhoidal plexuses are almost entirely fed through the SRA. They are also fed less by middle rectal artery (MRA) and rarely inferior rectal artery (IRA). Due to some anastomoses and unpredictable variations, vascular structures must be examined before the procedure. So far, there have been reports of studies involving a small number of patients regarding the use of coils and particles as embolization agents. Some of these used particles and coils alone, while others used a combination of particles and/or coils. The studies demonstrated similar clinical efficacy with satisfactory results, and no significant complications such as ischemic necrosis were observed. The use of liquid embolic agents such as N-butyl-cyanoacrylate (NBCA) and ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) has also recently been suggested to be effective. In conclusion, the current data support the feasibility, effectiveness, and safety of rectal artery embolization for hemorrhoidal disease. However, there is no guideline or consensus in the selection of embolic materials. More randomized controlled studies are needed. This review aims to evaluate the effectiveness and feasibility of embolization applications in hemorrhoidal diseases.

Combining Siloxane-Based polybenzoxazine with Poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate/hydroxyl) for tougher, more Stable, and Self-Healable materials

Cross-linked EVOH containing dynamic silyl ether bonds with improved toughness and processability have been prepared by taking advantage of both ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) and benzoxazine chemistry. For that, the cross-linked EVOH was synthesized through a trans etherification reaction between siloxane mono-functional benzoxazine and pendant hydroxyl groups on ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymer. The precursor EVOH copolymer was obtained by hydrolysis of the commercially available and inexpensive ethylene–vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA). The chemical structures of polymers were analyzed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectra and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The curing and thermal stability were researched by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), respectively. The mechanical properties via the stress–strain analysis were examined to identify the effect of the benzoxazines with the silyl ether group on the toughness and self-healing ability of the modified EVOH.

Head-Mounted coating on graphite host enabling highly reversible Li Plating/Stripping in Lithium-ion/Lithium metal hybrid anode

Commercial graphite hosting excessive Li is a promising hybrid Li-ion/Li metal anode for high energy battery. Nevertheless, the issue of Li plating on the top surface of the graphite anode (Gra) is not well tackled, resulting in the uncontrollable growth of Li dendrites and accumulation of “dead Li”, as well as the deactivation of graphite particles. In this work, an insulating ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) layer is head-mounted covered on the graphite anode surface (Gra-OH) via a simple spray coating method. Due to the electron retarding ability of EVOH film, the top surface of the graphite host is passivated and the excessive Li can be well accommodated inside the porous structure of graphite host. Meanwhile, the lithiophilic –OH group of EVOH can regulate the Li+ flux and render the uniform Li plating behavior. Featuring these, the Gra-OH anodes with a Li storage capacity of 600 mAh/g show high Coulombic efficiencies (CEs) in both coin-cell and pouch cell even under carbonate electrolyte condition. When operating in Li-ion working mode, higher capacity retentions are readily achieved in the half-cell, full-cell and 5 Ah NCM811 pouch-cell, further demonstrating the application compatibility of this surface passivated Gra-OH anode.

Sealing of Iatrogenic Distal Coronary Artery Perforation by Liquid Embolization Agent—A Case Report

Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is one of the most commonly performed cardiovascular interventions to treat significant coronary artery stenosis. Although a safe procedure, it carries the risk of complications like coronary artery perforation (CAP), bleeding, stroke, and acute kidney injury rarely resulting in death. The incidence of CAP is 0.84% of all PCI procedures and the incidence is increasing as cardiologists are accepting more and more challenging cases. CAP is caused by a guidewire (GW) or a vessel tear from balloon angioplasty, stenting, or rotational atherectomy. Though the majority of CAPs do not result in cardiac tamponade, some do lead to tamponade and death. The majority of distal wire perforations respond to prolonged balloon inflation, coils, glue, or fat embolization. Herein, we report a case of distal CAP in a 63-year-old woman occurring following left circumflex artery PCI caused by the exiting of coronary GW. The CAP was successfully sealed by the liquid embolization technique using ONYX. First described in 1990, Onyx is an elastic polymer composed of ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide and mixed with micronized tantalum powder (Onyx). The Onyx is predominantly used by interventional radiologists while performing neurovascular and peripheral vascular interventions. There were only a few case reports of plugging of CAPs using Onyx. Our case highlights the safety and feasibility of closing distal CAPs using Onyx.

Ethylene Vinyl Alcohol Copolymer Nanofibrous Cation Exchange Chromatographic Membranes with a Gradient Porous Structure for Lysozyme Separation.

Lysozyme, a common antimicrobial agent, is widely used in the food, biopharmaceutical, chemical, and medicine fields. Rapid and effective isolation of lysozymes is an everlasting topic. In this work, ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymer nanofibrous membranes with a gradient porous structure used for lysozyme adsorption were prepared through layer-by-layer nanofiber wet-laying and a cost-efficient ultraviolet (UV)-assisted graft-modification method, where benzophenone was used as an initiator and 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid as a modifying monomer. As indicated in the Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectric energy spectrometer (XPS) investigation, sulfonic acid groups were introduced on the surface of the modified nanofibrous membrane, which possessed the ability to adsorb lysozyme. Compared with membranes with homogenous porous structures, membranes with a gradient porous structure present higher static (335 mg/g) and dynamic adsorption capacities (216.3 mg/g). Meanwhile, the adsorption capacity remained high after five cycles of the adsorption-desorption process. The results can be attributed to the gradient porous structure rather than the highest porosity and specific surface area. This suggests that the membrane with comprehensive separation performance can be designed from the view of the transmembrane porous structure, which is of significance for the development of next-generation advanced chromatographic membranes.

Effect of Graphene Oxide Localization on Morphology Development and Rheological and Mechanical Properties of Poly(lactic acid)/ethylene vinyl Alcohol Copolymer Blend Composites: A Comprehensive Study.

This study investigates the rheological, morphological, and mechanical properties of melt-processed polylactide/ethylene vinyl alcohol (70PLA/30EVOH) blend composites containing 0.25, 0.5, and 1 wt.% of graphene oxide (GO) nanoplates. Thermodynamic-based suggested the localization of nanoparticles in EVOH, SEM studies showed that the introduction of GO to the blend increased dispersed droplet size, which was attributed to the localization of GO within EVOH, as confirmed by TEM. The rheology results indicated a decrease in the elasticity for the composite containing 0.25 wt.% of GO compared to the neat blend, which was attributed to the sliding effect of the added GO nanoplatelets. However, samples containing higher amounts of GO nanoplatelets exhibited more excellent elasticity than the neat blend. The increased elasticity was suggestively attributed to the dominance of hydrodynamic interactions, the physical network of added nanoplatelets, and polymer/GO interactions over the sliding role of the GO nanoplatelets at higher loadings. In addition, the effect of the order of mixing was investigated, and the premixing of PLA and GO exhibited a decrease in the droplet radius compared to the neat blend. It was ascribed to the localization of GO nanosheets in the PLA and interface, which was confirmed by rheological results and mechanical assessments.

Regio- and Stereoregular EVOH Copolymers from ROMP as Designer Barrier Materials.

This work aimed to decrease the water permeability (P H2O) while simultaneously maintaining low oxygen permeability (P O2) in ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH)-based copolymers by introducing high levels of backbone regioregularity and stereoregularity. Both regioregular atactic and isotactic EVOH samples with 75 mol % ethylene were prepared by a ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP)-hydrogenation-deprotection approach and then compared to commercial EVOH(44) (containing 44 mol % ethylene) as a low P O2 standard with poor water barrier characteristics (i.e., high P H2O). The high levels of regioregularity and stereoregularity in these copolymers increased the melting temperature (T m), degree of crystallinity (χc), and glass-transition temperature (T g) compared to less regular structures. EVOH(44) demonstrated the highest T m but lower χc and T g values as compared to that of the isotactic polymer. Wide-angle X-ray scattering showed that semicrystalline EVOH(44) exhibited a monoclinic structure characteristic of commercial materials, while ROMP-derived polymers displayed an intermediate structure between monoclinic and orthorhombic. Tensile testing showed that isotacticity resulted in brittle mechanical behavior, while the atactic and commercial EVOH(44) samples had higher tensile toughness values. Although EVOH(44) had the lowest P O2 of the samples explored, the atactic and tough ROMP-derived polymer approached this value of P O2 while having a P H2O over 3 times lower than that of commercial EVOH(44).

A simple method to prepare anion exchange membrane by PVA/EVOH/MIDA for acid recovery by diffusion dialysis.

Given the substantial environmental pollution from industrial expansion, environmental protection has become particularly important. Nowadays, anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are widely used in wastewater treatment. With the use of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), ethylene-vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymer, and methyl iminodiacetic acid (MIDA), a series of cross-linked AEMs were successfully prepared using the solvent casting technique, and the network structure was formed in the membranes due to the cross-linking reaction between PVA/EVOH and MIDA. Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were used to analyze the prepared membranes. At the same time, its comprehensive properties which include water uptake, linear expansion rate, ion exchange capacity, thermal stability, chemical stability, and mechanical stability were thoroughly researched. In addition, diffusion dialysis performance in practical applications was also studied in detail. The acid dialysis coefficient (UH+) ranged from 10.2 to 35.6 × 10-3 m/h. Separation factor (S) value ranged from 25 to 38, which were all larger than that of the commercial membrane DF-120 (UH+: 8.5 × 10-3 m/h, S: 18.5). The prepared membranes had potential application value in acid recovery.

Molecular Simulation Study on the Hydrogen Permeation Behavior and Mechanism of Common Polymers.

This research aimed to provide an understanding of the selection and safe application of pipeline liner materials for hydrogen transport by examining the permeation properties and mechanisms of hydrogen within polymers commonly used for this purpose, such as high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH), through molecular simulation. The study was carried out within defined operational parameters of temperature (ranging from room temperature to 80 °C) and pressure (from 2.5 to 10 MPa) that are pertinent to hydrogen pipeline infrastructures. The results reveal that with an increase in temperature from 30 °C to 80 °C, the solubility, diffusion, and permeability coefficients of hydrogen in HDPE increase by 18.7%, 92.9%, and 129.0%, respectively. Similarly, in EVOH, these coefficients experience increments of 15.9%, 81.6%, and 112.7%. Conversely, pressure variations have a negligible effect on permeability in both polymers. HDPE exhibits significantly higher hydrogen permeability compared to EVOH. The unique chain segment configuration of EVOH leads to the formation of robust hydrogen bonds among the hydroxyl groups, thereby impeding the permeation of hydrogen. The process by which hydrogen is adsorbed in polymers involves aggregation at low potential energy levels. During diffusion, the hydrogen molecule primarily vibrates within a limited range, with intermittent occurrences of significant hole-to-hole transitions over larger distances. Hydrogen exhibits a stronger interaction with HDPE compared to EVOH, leading to a higher number of adsorption sites and increased hydrogen adsorption capacity in HDPE. Hydrogen molecules move more actively in HDPE than in EVOH, exhibiting greater hole amplitude and more holes in transition during the diffusion process.

Examination of Permeation Resistance of Chemical Protective Gloves Made of Laminate-Film Materials Against Chemical Substances.

This study investigated the permeation resistance of chemical protective gloves made of laminate film comprising nylon, ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH), and other materials against different chemical substances to examine their usability in different work processes. The permeation resistance of the chemical protective glove was tested using the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) test method against twelve substances: acetone, acetonitrile, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, n-hexane, methanol, tetrahydrofuran, toluene, 2-propanol, 1-butanol, 1,4-diethylene dioxide, and ethanol. After 480 min, no substance, except for methanol and ethanol, permeated at a standard permeation rate of 0.1 μg/cm2/min. Methanol and ethanol showed permeation at 1 min and 30 min elapsed, respectively. Hence, the gloves tested in this study exhibited permeation resistance to various chemical substances, and can thus be used in many work processes. Some film materials have short permeation time against certain chemical substances, but the chemical protective gloves tested in this study can be used at work sites, such as manufacturing sites, that require permeation resistance to different chemical substances.

Humidity-responsive antimicrobial properties of EVOH nanofibers loaded with cuminaldehyde/HβCD inclusion complexes and its application in chicken preservation

The application of cuminaldehyde (CUM) in the food industry is limited by its low water solubility, stability and bioavailability. In this work, the inclusion complex (IC) of CUM and 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HβCD) was synthesized (CUM/HβCD-IC), and then ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) containing CUM/HβCD-IC was prepared via coaxial electrospinning (CUM/HβCD-IC-EVOH-NF, CHIE-NF). The encapsulation efficiency and loading efficiency of CUM/HβCD-IC were 78.00% and 8.51%, respectively. The formation of solid CUM/HβCD-IC was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). Also, the CUM could enter the hydrophobic cavity of HβCD and be stabilized by hydrogen bond between CUM and HβCD. Transmission electron microscopy verified the successful preparation of core-shell nanofiber, and FESEM showed that the average diameter of CHIE-NF was 444 ± 127 nm. In addition, CHIE-NF achieved controlled release of CUM through EVOH responsive to humidity, improved the thermostability of free CUM, increased mechanical strength, and exhibited antibacterial ability against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. In the application for chicken meat preservation, CHIE-NF significantly slowed down the increase of total volatile basic nitrogen, pH value, total viable count, Enterobacteriaceae and lactic acid bacteria in minced chicken meat, and the shelf life of the meat increased by nearly 3 days compared to the control group based on the tested parameters. In summary, CHIE-NF has the potential for application in food field such as active packaging.

Biodegradable compatibilizer modified corn stover/poly(butylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate) composites

AbstractGreat environmental and economic benefits can be achieved by utilizing the agricultural residue corn stover (CS) to prepare the biodegradable poly(butylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate) (PBAT) composites. However, CS contains polarized hydroxyl groups from its main component cellulose, thus leading to its poor wetting by hydrophobic PBAT. It is of great significance to promote the compatibility between CS and PBAT for the improvement of interfacial interactions and composite performance, but the compatibilizer modified CS/PBAT biocomposites have been rarely mentioned until now. In this study, polyethylene glycol (PEG), glycidyl methacylate (GMA), and ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) were chosen to investigate the compatibilizer effect on the morphology, microstructure, thermal properties, mechanical strength, and water absorption capacity of the biodegradable CS/PBAT composites. The results reveal that the incorporated compatibilizers obviously improve the interface adhesion between CS and PBAT by reducing the hydrophilicity of CS surface. The enhanced interfacial bonding interactions effectively promote the crystallinity and mechanical strength of the CS/PBAT composites, but the initial degradation temperature and hydrophilicity of compatibilizers themselves also remarkably influence the composites’ thermostability and water absorption.Highlights The agricultural residue corn stover (CS) was used to reinforce PBAT. Effects of three different compatibilizers on the composites were studied. Compatibilizer improves the interface adhesion between CS and PBAT. Compatibilizer promotes crystallinity and mechanical strength of composites. The stability and hydrophilicity of compatibilizer affect those of composite.

Comparison between Onyx and coil embolization for persistent type 2 endoleaks after endovascular aneurysm repair.

Type 2 endoleaks (T2EL) are the most common form of endoleaks after endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR). Several studies on the feasibility of embolization using ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (Onyx, Medtronic) for T2EL have been reported. The purpose of this study was to compare coil and Onyx embolization for T2EL treatment after EVAR. Between August 2005 and July 2022, 46 patients underwent endovascular embolization for treatment of T2EL (15 Onyx and 31 coils). The primary endpoint was endoleaks resolution or significant aneurysm sac growth of >5 mm in maximal diameter after T2EL embolization. In addition, periprocedural factors, reintervention, sac rupture, and survival analysis were assessed. The follow-up period after embolization was significantly shorter in the Onyx group (11.6 months vs. 34.7 months, P = 0.016), and there was no difference in aneurysm sac growth rate between both groups (20.0% vs. 51.6%; P = 0.472, log-rank test). However, cases with multiple endoleak origins tended to be treated with Onyx (P = 0.002). When applying Onyx, there was no significant difference in results between the transarterial and translumbar approaches. There appears to be no significant difference in the results of Onyx and coil embolization for T2EL treatment, although it is difficult to evaluate effectiveness due to the small number of cases and short follow-up period. However, in cases of multiple origin endoleaks or when the transarterial approach is not feasible, the Onyx by translumbar approach may be a more effective method.
