Identity, stereotypes, and prejudices in intercultural education and the role of computers in ADHD

The educational area of ​​primary education is faced with most issues and problems due to the linguistic, religious, and cultural diversity of students, which is constantly growing numerically. Suddenly, elementary schools have become places where students speak different languages ​​with each other, bring different cultures and cultural elements due to their various countries of origin, and have special educational needs. Regardless of what the reasons are for a newly formed multicultural social reality, education as an essential institution of society in global, European, and local contexts is called upon to think about and find appropriate solutions, to initiate and implement actions to update itself, to change the educational philosophy, the general principles, its targeting by subject, the methodological-educational/teaching approaches, the educational material, printed and digital, and accordingly to train its teachers. The heterogeneity of the student population in terms of language, religion, or ethnicity is an indisputable fact for educational systems. During the educational process, we teachers are called to educate our students equally and equally, regardless of their country of origin and any of their differences, and this constitutes the pedagogical contract of morals and universal values for us. The goal of the current study is to gain an understanding of terms such as "identity," "stereotypes," and "prejudices," as well as therapeutic approaches used to help children from racial and ethnic minorities who are suffering from ADHD. These approaches include games using Computers.

Sleep Health Disparity and Race/Ethnicity, Socioeconomic Status, and Gender: A Systematic Review

Despite improvement in US healthcare, racial and ethnic minorities have experienced health disparities including sleep health disparities. This review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). We searched three electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science) from the earliest available date to September 2023 using the keywords sleep inequity, gender, race, and socioeconomic status. Studies published in languages other than English were excluded. Meta analysis, case reports, and editorials were also excluded. Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) of the National Library of Medicine and Keywords were used to search PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science. We also searched the reference lists of the selected articles. Using the search strategy, we identified 52 articles. After excluding 11 duplicate studies, we screened 41 articles. The studies not relevant to our search were further excluded and we finally assessed 16 full-text articles. Twelve of the 16 studies were cross sectional and 4 were prospective studies. Compared to Whites, increased prevalence of shorter sleep duration was found among people of diverse racial background. Similarly, individuals with lower socioeconomic status have been shown to have a disproportionate increase in insufficient sleep (1.62 times). Additionally, compared to White women, Black women were more likely to report short sleep (37% vs. 27%) and were less likely to obtain the recommended amount of sleep (52% vs. 64%). This review demonstrates disparities in sleep based on race/ethnicity as well as the effect of gender and socioeconomic status on the quality of sleep.

The Aggrieved Entitlement Scale: A New Measure for an Old Problem.

Aggrieved entitlement (AE) refers to the defensiveness and hostility majority-group members feel toward the outgroup in response to a perceived threat of lost privileges. Over the last couple of years, AE has garnered a great deal of attention in the media as well as in the empirical literature because of its connection with extremism and violence against minority groups. Yet, to date, research quantifying and measuring the construct of AE is scant. In this paper, we aim to bridge this gap. Across two studies (N1 = 813; N2 = 1,100) we explore the factor structure of the Aggrieved Entitlement Scale (AES) and examine its concurrent and divergent validity with related demographic, attitudinal, and personality factors. We found that the AES was positively correlated with racist attitudes, fear-based xenophobia, authoritarianism, sexism, transphobia, and sexual entitlement. We further found that it was negatively correlated with feminist attitudes, honesty-humility, and compassionate love. In both samples, scores were higher among men (vs. women) and heterosexual (vs. sexual minority) individuals. Finally, in contrast to our expectations, racial and ethnic minority participants scored higher in AE than White participants. Results from this work offer initial support for the use of the AES and call for more research into the topic.

Lower social vulnerability is associated with a higher prevalence of social media-involved violent crimes in Prince George’s County, Maryland, 2018–2023

BackgroundSocial vulnerability may play a role in social media-involved crime, but few studies have investigated this issue. We investigated associations between social vulnerability and social media-involved violent crimes.MethodsWe analyzed 22,801 violent crimes occurring between 2018 and 2023 in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Social media involvement was obtained from crime reports at the Prince George’s County Police Department. Social media application types included social networking, advertising/selling, ridesharing, dating, image/video hosting, mobile payment, instant messaging/Voice over Internet Protocol, and other. We used the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Social Vulnerability Index to assess socioeconomic status (SES), household characteristics, racial and ethnic minority status, housing type and transportation, and overall vulnerability. Modified Poisson models estimated adjusted prevalence ratios (aPRs) among the overall sample and stratified by crime type (assault and homicide, robbery, and sexual offense). Covariates included year and crime type.ResultsRelative to high tertile areas, we observed a higher prevalence of social media-involved violent crimes in areas with low SES vulnerability (aPR: 1.82, 95% CI: 1.37-2.43), low housing type and transportation vulnerability (aPR: 1.53, 95% CI: 1.17-2.02), and low overall vulnerability (aPR: 1.63, 95% CI: 1.23-2.17). Low SES vulnerability areas were significantly associated with higher prevalences of social media-involved assaults and homicides (aPR: 1.64, 95% CI: 1.02-2.62), robberies (aPR: 2.00, 95% CI: 1.28-3.12), and sexual offenses (aPR: 2.07, 95% CI: 1.02-4.19) compared to high SES vulnerability areas. Low housing type and transportation vulnerability (vs. high) was significantly associated with a higher prevalence of social media-involved robberies (aPR: 1.54, 95% CI:1.01-2.37). Modified Poisson models also indicated that low overall vulnerability areas had higher prevalences of social media-involved robberies (aPR: 1.71, 95% CI: 1.10-2.67) and sexual offenses (aPR: 2.14, 95% CI: 1.05-4.39) than high overall vulnerability areas.ConclusionsWe quantified the prevalence of social media-involved violent crimes across social vulnerability levels. These insights underscore the need for collecting incident-based social media involvement in crime reports among law enforcement agencies across the United States and internationally. Comprehensive data collection at the national and international levels provides the capacity to elucidate the relationships between neighborhoods, social media, and population health.

Indigenous, Black, and Latine Adolescents Disproportionately Experience Barriers to Pediatric Gender-Affirming Care

Although prior studies have explored the barriers that transgender and nonbinary (TNB) adolescents experience in receiving gender-affirming medical care (GAMC), few have sought to understand how these barriers may differ among racial and ethnic minority groups. Accordingly, this study used data from a survey of TNB young adults (ages 18–20 years) to explore how barriers to GAMC during adolescence varied by race and ethnicity. Differences in the impact of 11 potential barriers when comparing the members of each racial and ethnic group with those who did not identify with that racial or ethnic group were evaluated usingttests. The results showed that Indigenous respondents indicated that parental unwillingness to consent for GAMC and attend a clinic visit and not being able to find a clinic contributed significantly more compared with those who did not identify as Indigenous. Black respondents indicated that not knowing it was possible to receive GAMC during adolescence and previous negative experiences in healthcare related to race or ethnicity contributed significantly more to their inability to receive GAMC during adolescence compared with those who did not identify as Black. Latine respondents indicated that parental unwillingness to consent for GAMC and attend a clinic visit, worries about cost, and previous negative experiences in healthcare due to race or ethnicity contributed significantly more compared with those who did not identify as Latine. Overall, the results suggest disproportionate barriers in access to GAMC during adolescence among Indigenous, Black, and Latine TNB individuals and illustrate a need for additional resources and interventions to promote more equitable access.

What does it mean to be European? How identity content shapes adolescent's views towards immigrants and support for the EU

AbstractAdolescents support Eurosceptic and far‐right movements more and more. Since adolescents' years are a formative period for political orientations, it is important to promote a shared sense of belonging together among Europeans to counteract these tendencies. This could be achieved by fostering a European identity, however, only if its content is civically defined. We examined adolescents' understandings of being European, and how they relate to intolerance, EU support, and other predictors. Our sample included 1206 German adolescents (51% female, Age: M = 14.4, SD = .6, 27% ethnic minority adolescents). European identity was assessed via open answers and five closed questions. We conducted latent class analysis to identify identity classes. Three classes emerged: a living‐based (47%), a culture & value‐based (27%), and an ancestry‐based class (26%). Classes did not differ regarding EU support, but regarding intolerance (highest: ancestry‐based, lowest: culture & value‐based). Our results indicate that German adolescents differed in their understanding of being European and that it is important to consider how youth define Europeanness to understand European identity's effect on their views. Furthermore, our study argues for assessing identity openly to capture nuances of identity content adequately.

A triple trust penalty? The majority-minority gap in subjective wellbeing

This study introduces a social capital perspective to the majority-minority gap in wellbeing. We explore the role of social trust and test specifically whether racial and ethnic minorities may experience a triple trust penalty. First is a level penalty, where minorities exhibit lower levels of trust, potentially adversely affecting their wellbeing. Second, there may be a return penalty, where minorities may experience a diminished return from being trustful. Third, there may be a protection penalty, where minorities experience reduced benefits from residing in a high-trust context. Our empirical analyses are based on data from multiple waves of the European Social Survey (Round 4–10, 2008–2020) with over 300,000 individuals from 38 European countries. Our analyses indicate support for the level penalty, but we found no evidence for the return or protection penalties. Specifically, we show that racial and ethnic minorities’ lower levels of trust can have harmful impacts on their happiness and life satisfaction. However, an increase in trust yields greater wellbeing among racial and ethnic minorities, and residing in a high-trust context also appears to have a more substantial impact on the well-being of racial and ethnic minorities as compared to their counterparts. The results suggest that promoting trust can effectively narrow the wellbeing gap among various racial groups.

A Review of Cutaneous Extraintestinal Manifestations of Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Skin of Color.

The incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is increasing in racial and ethnic minority groups. Cutaneous extraintestinal manifestations (EIMs) of IBD are well-known comorbid conditions that can occur in both active and quiescent IBD. Historically, cutaneous EIMs of IBD are described in White skin with a lack of literature describing these conditions in darker skin tones. This potentially creates a knowledge gap and awareness among providers in recognizing these conditions and offering therapy in a timely manner to non-White patients. This review aims to describe the cutaneous manifestations of IBD in a wide range of skin tones with several examples to improve awareness. With further awareness, this review will enable to provide equitable care to IBD patients with cutaneous EIMs.

Adoption of CKD-EPI (2021) for GFR estimation - implications for UK practice.

Recommendations to move to a race free estimating equation for glomerular filtration rate have gained increasing prominence since 2021. We wished to determine the impact of any future adoption upon the CKD patient population of a large teaching hospital, with a population breakdown largely similar to that of England as a whole. We compared four estimating equations (MDRD, CKD-EPI (2009), CKD-EPI (2021) and EKFC) using the Bland-Altman method. Bias and precision were calculated (in both figures and percentages) for all patients with CKD and specific subgroups determined by age, ethnic group, CKD stage and sex. CKD stage was assessed using all four equations. All equations studied had a positive bias in South Asian patients and a negative bias in Black patients compared to CKD-EPI (2021). Similarly, there was a positive bias in White patients across all equations studied. Comparing CKD-EPI (2009) and EKFC this positive bias increased as patients aged, the opposite was seen with MDRD. Between 10% and 28% of patients in our dataset changed their CKD staging depending upon estimating equation used. Our work confirms previous findings that the MDRD equation overestimates eGFR in South Asians and underestimates eGFR in Blacks. The alternative equations also demonstrated similar bias. This may, in part, explain the health inequalities seen in ethnic minority patients in the UK. Applying our findings to the UK CKD population as a whole would result in anywhere from 260,000 - 730,000 patients having their CKD stage reclassified, which in turn will impact secondary care services.

A pilot study testing a new transition of care model from hospital to the community for Hispanic/Latino adults with diabetes to reduce emergency department visits and hospital re-admissions

BackgroundHispanic/Latino populations have the second highest prevalence of diabetes (12.5%) among ethnic minority groups in the USA. They also have higher rates of uncontrolled diabetes and diabetes-related complications. Approximately 29% of diabetes care costs are attributed to inpatient hospital care. To reduce hospital length of stay and re-admission rates for diabetes, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends a “structured discharge plan tailored to the individual patient with diabetes.” However, limited research exists on the feasibility and applicability of a transition of care model specifically tailored for the Hispanic/Latino population.MethodsWe conducted a 2-year pilot study to develop a practical, patient-centered, and culturally competent transition of care (TOC) model for Hispanic/Latino adults with diabetes discharged from the hospital to the community. Feasibility outcomes included recruitment rates, questionnaire completion rates, adherence to a 30-day post-discharge phone call, and resource needs and utilization for study implementation. Participant-centered outcomes included 30-day post-discharge emergency department (ED) visits, 30-day post-discharge unplanned re-admissions, follow-up visits within 2 weeks of discharge, and patient satisfaction with the TOC model.ResultsTwelve participants were enrolled over the study period, with weekly enrollment ranging from 0 to 4 participants. Participants’ average age in years was 47 (± 11.6); the majority were male (85%), and 75% had type 2 diabetes. Recruitment involved the support of 4 bilingual staff. The estimated time to review the chart, approach participants, obtain informed consent, complete questionnaires, and provide discharge instructions was approximately 2.5 h. Of the 10 participants who completed the 30-day post-discharge phone call, none had ED visits or unplanned hospital re-admissions within 30 days post-discharge, and all had a follow-up with a medical provider within 2 weeks.ConclusionsImplementing a patient-centered and culturally competent TOC model for Hispanic/Latino adults with diabetes discharged from the hospital to the community is feasible when considering key resources for success. These include a bilingual team with dedicated and funded time, alignment with existing discharge process and integration into the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems.

Chain mediating role of moral values identification and positive psychological capital in the relationship between meaning in life and crisis vulnerability.

To explore the relationship between meaning in life and vulnerability to crisis among undergraduate nursing students and the chain mediating effect between moral values identification and positive psychological capital (PsyCap). A total of 330 undergraduate nursing students majoring in traditional Chinese medicine in ethnic minority areas of Yunnan Province were administered the Meaning in Life Questionnaire, Moral Values Identification Identity Questionnaire, Positive PsyCap Questionnaire, and Crisis Vulnerability Scale. Meaning in life was negatively correlated with crisis vulnerability and positively correlated with moral values identification and positive PsyCap. Crisis vulnerability was negatively correlated with moral values and positive PsyCap. Moral values was positively correlated with positive PsyCap. Chain mediation effect analysis demonstrated that meaning in life cannot directly predict crisis vulnerability, but it can predict crisis vulnerability through 3 indirect paths: the mediating role of moral values identification, the mediating role of positive PsyCap, and the chain mediating role of moral values identification and positive PsyCap. Meaning in life can indirectly reduce crisis vulnerability among undergraduate nursing students by enhancing moral values identification and positive PsyCap.

Spatial distribution characteristics of Tibetan Buddhism principal-subordinate monastery systems in the Hehuang region

Tibetan Buddhist monasteries constitute significant cultural heritages of ethnic minorities, evolving into the Principal-Subordinate Monastery System (PSMS) with profound historical and cultural significance. This system exhibits an integrated hierarchical structure in terms of religious dominance, political administration, and cultural diffusion. Existing research primarily focuses on internal humanistic factors such as governance patterns, while there is not any research focused on its patterns and manifestations in spatial distribution. This study aims to elucidate the spatial distribution characteristics of the PSMS in Hehuang region, including the Tibetan Buddhist monasteries from all sects in the Hehuang region since the Song Dynasty It establishes a hierarchical PSMS database based on the affiliation relationships, aimed at storing spatial and property information related to PSMS. The database standardizes the naming and coding of monasteries, and classifies them through hierarchical relationships to ensure data consistency and usability. Finally, the classified and coded monastery data were analyzed by GIS tools to form the PSMS spatial distribution characterisation framework. Results reveal that (1) Monasteries demonstrate notable spatial clustering patterns from both holistic and sectarian perspectives, with density being influenced by the principal monastery’s position. (2) Almost every PSMS exhibits a spatial pattern centered around the principal monastery, with subordinate monasteries clustering within a defined range correlated with the administrative region of the principal monastery. (3) PSMS scale variations are controlled by principal monasteries, exhibiting positive correlations in hierarchical structure, control quantity, and distribution range. (4) The spatial orientation of PSMS correlates with river distribution, while the relationships among mountain ranges require further investigation. These findings provide initial insights into the spatial distribution characteristics of PSMS, confirming the spatial influence of the principal monastery. Besides, this study established an innovative spatial research framework for heritage clusters with multiple types and hierarchies. Thus, this study offers new insights into the spatial distribution of Tibetan Buddhist monastery heritage and presents a framework for further examining the spatial distribution of the Tibetan Buddhist monastery heritage in other regions, as well as other heritage clusters where connected and clustered through religious and cultural ties.

Climate change, livelihood resilience, and gender: An intersectional analysis of Vietnam's forest-dependent communities

Integrating gender-disaggregated data and adopting a gender-focused perspective are crucial for a comprehensive understanding of climate change issues. This study provides empirical evidence from two ethnic minorities in Vietnam, highlighting how perceptions of livelihood resilience vary by gender, geographical context, and ethnicity, with a particular emphasis on their intersections. Over 13 months, data were gathered through 3 focus group discussions, in-depth interviews with 9 key informants, field observations, and surveys of 136 households. The findings revealed a low average Household Livelihood Resilience (HLR) score of 0.434, indicating limited resilience among forest-dependent households facing external shocks. Notably, a significant gender gap was evident, with men demonstrating higher resilience levels than women, a disparity attributed to entrenched social norms and cultural practices. Women, often confined to domestic roles, faced barriers to community involvement and access to financial resources, which weakened their ability to cope with and recover from adverse events. To address these issues, the study advocates for climate actions that prioritize gender equality and aim to enhance women's resilience. This includes amplifying their voices through tailored training programs and initiatives such as women-managed microfinance groups. The study also emphasizes the policy implications for advancing gender equality, sustainable forest management, and livelihood resilience. However, this work has limitations, including a small sample size and reliance on self-reported data, which may introduce biases. Future research should involve a larger, more diverse sample of forest-dependent communities and examine various dimensions of vulnerability to provide a more nuanced understanding of resilience factors.

Psychological distress in the neonatal intensive care unit: a meta-review.

Parental psychological distress (PD) (anxiety, depression, stress and post-traumatic stress syndrome) can adversely affect parents' own physical and mental health as well as their children's long-term health and development. Numerous studies have addressed PD in mothers of infants admitted to NICU, with interventions proposed, but few have addressed the impact on fathers or other family members. The present review examined systematic reviews that addressed PD in NICU and potential interventions. A meta-review was performed by searching various databases between 2000 and May 2024. Fifty-four studies were included. The incidence of maternal PD varied depending on the screening tool used (13-93%), as did paternal PD (0.08-46%). The incidence of PD in sexual, racial and gender minorities, siblings, grandparents and those in lower-middle income countries is not known. Numerous screening tools were used with a wide variety of cut-off values. Various intervention programmes were evaluated and showed contradictory evidence regarding their effect on PD. Routine screening should be implemented together with acombination of interventional programmes, specifically family-centred interventions. More research is required for PD in siblings, sexual and genderminority parents as well as parents living in low middle income countries. Psychological distress is high in NICU, affecting parents and siblings. Maternal psychological distress may have long lasting effects on infant health and differs from that of fathers, who require as much attention as mothers Little is known about emotional stress in siblings and sex and gender minority group peoples Few interventions showed conclusive effectiveness in reducing psychological distress with combination interventions showing more effectiveness than single interventions.

Barriers to Reproductive Justice for Women Seeking Sanctuary in the UK: Narratives from Birth Companions and the Maternity Stream of Sanctuary

Women living in the UK with insecure immigration status are often from ethnic minority groups, have limited understanding of English, and have significant experience of trauma. Recent confidential inquiries into maternal deaths have repeatedly shown how intersecting and multiple disadvantage puts these women at higher risk of maternal mortality and morbidity. Multiple voluntary sector organisations are relied upon to support these women as they navigate the journey to parenthood. A reproductive justice framework is here employed to examine the multitude of factors intersecting to influence the access women with insecure migrant status have to maternity services. Narrative construction of three composite case studies took place to highlight the various ways reproductive justice is both violated and protected by the immigration and maternity systems in the UK. The discussion section comments on prevalent themes throughout each case study: gendered dynamics of insecure immigration status, structural barriers and complex systems, and reliance on the fragile voluntary sector. This article concludes that, alongside the work of the voluntary sector, women’s reproductive justice rights must also be emphasised and protected throughout statutory systems and services.

Етнічні меншини України: роль греків Приазов'я у формуванні національної ідентичності

The purpose of the article is to explore the role of the Greeks of the Azov region in shaping the national identity of Ukraine, as well as to analyze the impact of their ethnocultural heritage on the development of modern Ukrainian society. The methodology of the research is based on a combination of historical-ethnographic and cultural-anthropological approaches, as well as the use of interdisciplinary methods of analysis, including comparative analysis, data systematization, and synthesis. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that, for the first time, a comprehensive analysis of the transformation of the national identity of the Greeks of the Azov region has been carried out, from their resettlement from Crimea to the modern period, particularly in the context of socio-political changes in Ukraine and the influence of external factors, such as the war in Donbas. Conclusions. The article concludes that the Greeks of the Azov region have played a significant role in forming the multinational identity of Ukraine. Their cultural heritage, preservation of language, and traditions in the face of historical challenges serve as an example of the resilience and adaptability of an ethnic minority within the context of modern Ukrainian society. Further research in this direction may contribute to a deeper understanding of the processes of ethnic and national identification in Ukraine.

Disparities in the Representation of Sex, Race and Ethnicity in Tension-Type Headache Clinical Trials.

While tension-type headache (TTH) is the most common primary headache disorder, its effect according to sex, race and ethnicity remains unclear. We investigated disparities in sex, racial and ethnic representation in TTH clinical trials with comparison to global disease burdens. In this cross-sectional analysis, TTH clinical trials had female overrepresentation and racial and ethnic minority underrepresentation, which may affect understanding of the impact of TTH on different populations and personalized treatment development. Trial enrollment that is diverse and reflective of global disease burdens is crucial for improving study generalizability, understanding of diverse clinical presentations, and ensuring healthcare equity.
