Enhancing eMSOT with nonlinear mixed model approaches for precise blood oxygenation imaging in tissues

Multispectral optoacoustic tomography (MSOT) utilizes multiple wavelengths to illuminate tissue, producing a series of optoacoustic images rich in spectral information. This approach offers a more comprehensive spectral profile compared to conventional optoacoustic techniques. Contrasted with single-wavelength optoacoustic images, the spectral information can be amalgamated with endogenous chromophores or exogenous dyes within biological organisms, thereby unveiling physiological, cellular, and subcellular functions. The development of eigenspectral optoacoustic tomography (eMSOT), grounded in the linear mixture model (LMM), along with its various derivative methods, facilitates label-free imaging of tissue oxygen saturation in deep-seated structures. However, the effectiveness of the LMM may diminish in the presence of multiple scattering effects or inter-substance interactions, thereby impairing the performance of the eMSOT method in heterogeneous tissues. To address this issue, we propose incorporating a nonlinear model to enhance the eMSOT technique, which we refer to as NL-eMSOT (non-linear eMSOT). This model employs the Hadamard product as a nonlinear component of the LMM, effectively characterizing the interactions between photons and both oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin within the near-infrared spectral window. This innovation resolves the nonlinear unmixing problem inherent in optoacoustic imaging. Our approach, validated through numerical simulations, phantom experiments, and in vivo studies, improves the accuracy of quantitative oxygen saturation estimation in heterogeneous tissues by accounting for inter-substance interactions. Consequently, it necessitates the consideration of more complex mixing models to adequately address nonlinear interactions.

Quantitative evaluation of the impact of variation of optical parameters on the estimation of blood hematocrit and oxygen saturation for dual-wavelength photoacoustics

Photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy is considered to be one of the most effective ways to measure the levels of hematocrit (H) and oxygenation saturation (SO2) of blood, which are essential for diagnosing blood-related illnesses. This simulation study aims to investigate the impact of individual optical parameters, i.e., optical absorption coefficient (μ a ), scattering coefficient (μ s ), and anisotropy factor (g), on the accuracy of this technique in estimating the blood properties. We first performed the Monte Carlo simulations, using realistic optical parameters, to obtain the fluence maps for various samples. The wavelengths of the incident light were chosen to be 532, 700, 1000, and 1064 nm. Thereafter, the k-Wave simulations were executed, incorporating those fluence maps to generate the PA signals. The blood properties were obtained using the PA signals. We introduced variations in μ a , μ s , and g ranging from −10% to +10%, −10% to +10%, and −5% to +1%, respectively, at 700 and 1000 nm wavelengths. One parameter, at both wavelengths, was changed at a time, keeping others fixed. Subsequently, we examined how accurately the blood parameters could be determined at physiological hematocrit levels. A 10% variation in μ a induces a 10% change in H estimation but no change in SO2 determination. Almost no change has been seen for μ s variation. However, a 5% (−5% to 0%) variation in the g factor resulted in approximately 160% and 115% changes in the PA signal amplitudes at 700 and 1000 nm, respectively, leading to ≈125% error in hematocrit estimation and ≈14% deviation in SO2 assessment when nominal SO2=70%. It is clear from this study that the scattering anisotropy factor is a very sensitive parameter and a small change in its value can result in large errors in the PA estimation of blood properties. In the future, in vitro experiments with pathological blood (inducing variation in the g parameter) will be performed, and accordingly, the accuracy of the PA technique in quantifying blood H and SO2 will be evaluated.

Blood Oxygen Saturation Estimation with Laser-Induced Graphene Respiration Sensor

Measuring blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) is crucial in a triage process for identifying patients with respiratory distress or shock, since low SpO2 levels indicate compromised hemostability and the need for priority treatment. This paper explores the use of wearable mechanical deflection sensors based on laser-induced graphene (LIG) for SpO2 estimation. The LIG sensors are attached to a subject’s chest for real-time monitoring of respiratory signals. We have developed a novel database of the respiratory signals, with corresponding SpO2 values ranging from 86% to 100%. The database is used to develop an artificial neural network model for SpO2 estimation. The neural network performance is promising, with regression metrics mean squared error = 0.184, mean absolute error = 0.301, root mean squared error = 0.429, and R-squared = 0.804. The use of mechanical respiration sensors in combination with neural networks in biosensing opens new possibilities for noninvasive SpO2 monitoring and other innovative applications.

CL-SPO2Net: Contrastive Learning Spatiotemporal Attention Network for Non-Contact Video-Based SpO2 Estimation.

Video-based peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) estimation, utilizing solely RGB cameras, offers a non-contact approach to measuring blood oxygen levels. Previous studies set a stable and unchanging environment as the premise for non-contact blood oxygen estimation. Additionally, they utilized a small amount of labeled data for system training and learning. However, it is challenging to train optimal model parameters with a small dataset. The accuracy of blood oxygen detection is easily affected by ambient light and subject movement. To address these issues, this paper proposes a contrastive learning spatiotemporal attention network (CL-SPO2Net), an innovative semi-supervised network for video-based SpO2 estimation. Spatiotemporal similarities in remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) signals were found in video segments containing facial or hand regions. Subsequently, integrating deep neural networks with machine learning expertise enabled the estimation of SpO2. The method had good feasibility in the case of small-scale labeled datasets, with the mean absolute error between the camera and the reference pulse oximeter of 0.85% in the stable environment, 1.13% with lighting fluctuations, and 1.20% in the facial rotation situation.

Blood Oxygen and Heart Rate Monitoring by A Flexible Hybrid Electronics Device Fabricated by Multilayer Screen‐Printing

AbstractPulse oximetry is widely used in medical settings and in everyday life for the estimation of peripheral blood oxygen saturation (SpO2). However, SpO2 response measured on the peripheral parts of the body (such as fingers and wrists) has a time lag compared to measuring on the forehead. In addition, current devices are centimeter‐thick, making seamless integration with the body difficult, and hindering continuous monitoring. Here a design, fabrication, and evaluation of a SpO2 and heart rate sensor based on flexible hybrid electronics (FHE) is presented. The marriage of flexible electronics with high‐performance commercially available integrated circuit (IC) chips makes advanced sensing, data processing, and wireless data transmission functionalities possible on a thin (1.6 mm) and flexible form that can be attached to various parts of the body. Differently from most devices using FHE, here a cost‐efficient and mass‐production compatible multilayer screen‐printing process for making the interconnection circuitry is described in detail, including topographic analysis. By optimizing the printing steps, interconnecting lines vertically traversing up to five printed layers over several tens of micrometers can be fabricated, increasing the spatial density. The device reliably detects hypoxemia, and when applied on the forehead, changes in SpO2 appear >10 s earlier compared to a finger‐based medical‐grade device.

Cerebrovascular reactivity to carbon dioxide tension in newborns: data from combined time-resolved near-infrared spectroscopy and diffuse correlation spectroscopy.

Critically ill newborns are at risk of brain damage from cerebrovascular disturbances. A cerebral hemodynamic monitoring system would have the potential role to guide targeted intervention. To obtain, in a population of newborn infants, simultaneous near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS)-based estimates of cerebral tissue oxygen saturation () and blood flow during variations of carbon dioxide tension () levels within physiologic values up to moderate permissive hypercapnia, and to examine if the derived estimate of metabolic rate of oxygen would stay constant, during the same variations. We enrolled clinically stable mechanically ventilated newborns at postnatal age without brain abnormalities at ultrasound. and blood flow index were measured using a non-invasive device (BabyLux), which combine time-resolved NIRS and diffuse-correlation spectroscopy. The effect of changes in transcutaneous on , cerebral blood flow (CBF), and cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen index () were estimated. Ten babies were enrolled and three were excluded. Median GA at enrollment was 39 weeks and median weight 2720 g. increased 0.58% (95% CI 0.55; 0.61, ), CBF 2% (1.9; 2.3, ), and 0.3% (0.05; 0.46, ) per mmHg increase in . BabyLux device detected -induced changes in cerebral and CBF, as expected. The small statistically significant positive relationship between and variation is not considered clinically relevant and we are inclined to consider it as an artifact.

Food intolerance in premature babies: possibilities of additional diagnostics

Due to the immaturity of the digestive system and gastrointestinal motility the preterm infants have a critical challenge in establishing adequate enteral nutrition, which is a frequent cause of gastrointestinal complications such as food intolerance and necrotizing enterocolitis. Modern clinical methods of assessing the maturity of the intestines and the child's readiness for enteral nutrition are subjective, this slows down the expansion of enteral nutrition, increases the duration of parenteral nutrition, and accordingly , period of a child`s hospitalizing. Objective methods of diagnosis are needed, which would contribute to the effective diagnosis and monitoring of food intolerance in preterm infants. Therefore, the purpose of our review was to search and summarize literature data on objective methods of diagnosing impaired food tolerance in premature baby, which could to provide daily monitoring, would be safe, cost-effective and easily accessible. Results and their discussion. Accordingly, three leading and most promising methods of examining the newborns gastrointestinal tract were analyzed. The were ultrasound examination (absence or reverse diastolic blood flow in the umbilical artery, high pulsation index in the fetal venous duct, indicators of blood flow in the upper mesenteric artery of the newborn), near-infrared spectroscopy (estimation of oxygen saturation of splanchnic tissue), and auscultation of intestinal sounds (phonoenterogram). Each of these methods has advantages and disadvantages, but to solve these existing problems, there has been recently an increasing amount of research on the bowel sounds using (namely their computerized assessment) as a new diagnostic tool. New research and further study of intestinal murmurs in premature newborns of different gestational ages with the development of clear criteria for data interpretation are needed to assess the maturity of the gastrointestinal tract, to create a diagnosis plan of food intolerance, and to develop an algorithm for early intervention.

Effectiveness of Audiovisual Distraction Technique and Filmed Modeling on Anxiety and Fear in Pediatric Dental Patients.

To evaluate the effectiveness of the audiovisual distraction (AVD) technique and filmed modeling (FM) on anxiety and fear in pediatric dental patients. This experimental in vivo study was conducted on 80 subjects of age-groups 5-8 years coming to the Department of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry for their first dental visit. Study subjects were subjected to noninvasive restorative treatment under AVD in group I, FM in group II, and a combination of AVD and FM in groups III and IV (control 0). To assess the level of pre and postoperative anxiety and fear, various biological parameters like pulse rate, oxygen saturation, body temperature, respiratory rate, and salivary cortisol estimation along with facial image scale (FIS), and fear assessment picture scale (FAPS) were used. Group III (a combination of AVD and FM) came out to be better than other experimental groups and control groups in reducing dental anxiety and fear in pediatric dental patients. A combination of AVD and FM techniques can be recommended to be used as an effective behavior management technique. A child's disruptive behavior due to dental anxiety causes difficulty in delivering effective dental treatment. Thus, a child's behavior management is of paramount importance in the pediatric dental setup. Nonpharmacological behavior management techniques, that is, a combination of AVD and FM techniques can be recommended to be used as an effective behavior management technique to reduce dental anxiety and fear in pediatric dental patients. Muscle stimulation for peripheral venous oxygen saturation estimation using photoplethysmography: a proof-of-concept

Abstract The body’s ability to balance oxygen supply and demand can be compromised in conditions such as shock, sepsis, and heart failure. Thus, measuring venous oxygen saturation (SvO2) simultaneously with the well-established peripheral arterial oxygen saturation can help in the clinical management of these conditions. Some authors have suggested a non-invasive SvO2 estimation method that acquires venous blood volume variations generated through the calf muscle pump using photoplethysmography (PPG): the Venous Muscle Pump Test (VMPT). However, the technique presents significant variability in the rhythm and speed of the foot dorsal flexions needed for the VMPT and cannot be performed on unconscious subjects and those with reduced mobility. This study proposes using functional electrical stimulation (FES) to stimulate the calf muscle and generate rhythmic and reproducible muscle contractions. A human proof-of-concept study was conducted with three healthy young male participants. The PPG signals achieved through the VMPT with conventionally active and FES-induced movements were compared. We found that FES-induced movement produced reproducible venous blood volume variations comparable to the ones induced by the active movement. However, it also leads to lower venous refilling time and lower muscle power. Although further individualized tuning of the stimulation parameters is needed to achieve more conclusive results, FES-induced movement proves to be a promising alternative to the conventional VMPT technique to measure venous oxygen saturation and assess venous insufficiency in specific clinical situations.

Factors affecting performance of fetal blood T2 measurements for noninvasive estimation of oxygen saturation.

To ultimately make accurate and precise fetal noninvasive oxygen saturation (sO2 ) measurements by T2 -prepared bSSFP more widely available by systematically assessing error sources in order to potentially reduce perinatal mortality in cardiovascular malformations and fetal growth restriction. T2 -prepared bSSFP data were acquired in phantoms; in flowing blood in adults in the superior sagittal sinus, ascending and descending aorta, and main pulmonary artery; and in the fetal descending aorta and umbilical vein. T2 was assessed in relation to T2 two- or three-parameter curve-fitting techniques, SSFP readout, refocusing time delay (τ), constant and pulsatile blood flow, and impact of T1 recovery. Further, fetal T2 and sO2 variability were quantified in the descending aorta and umbilical vein in healthy fetuses and fetuses with cardiovascular malformation (gestational weeks 32-38). In phantoms, three-parameter fitting was accurate irrespective of phase FOV (<4 ms; i.e., <2%), and T2 was overestimated (up to 23 ms/10%; p = 0.001) beyond ±30 Hz off-resonance. In the adult aorta, T2 was underestimated during higher blood flow velocities and pulsatility for τ = 16 ms (-41 ms/-17%; p = 0.008). In fetuses, two-parameter fitting overestimated T2 compared with three-parameter fitting (+33 ms/+18%; p = 0.03). T2 variability was 18 ms/15% in the fetal descending aorta and 28 ms/14% in the umbilical vein. The resulting estimated sO2 variability was ∼10% (15% of sO2 value) in the fetal descending aorta. Errors due to T2 -fitting techniques, off-resonance, flow velocity, and insufficient T1 recovery between image acquisitions could be mitigated by using three-parameter fitting with included saturation-prepared images approximating infinite T2 -preparation time, adequate shimming covering the fetus and placenta, and by modifying acquisition parameters. Variability in fetal blood T2 and sO2 , however, indicate that it is currently not feasible to use these methods for prediction of disease.

ECG augmented pulse oximetry in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar)—A pilot study

Understanding the tolerance limits of fish is crucial for developing aquaculture operations that ensure good animal welfare. However, there exist little data describing the physiological responses in farmed Atlantic salmon, much because the technological tools for taking such measurements have not existed. Recent advances in electronic implants have enabled concurrent measurement of electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmograms (PPG) in salmon that can be used for robust estimation of HR and oxygen saturation in arterial blood (i.e., SpO2/pulse oximetry) if appropriate strategies for motion artifact and light scattering compensation can be realized. To enable pulse oximetry for farmed Atlantic salmon (and fish in general), two experiments have been conducted. In Experiment 1, PPGs were obtained from salmon induced to swim at two different water currents under normoxic conditions. By using two water currents, the resulting data provided a foundation for developing methods for motion artifact compensation. Data from this experiment were also used to calculate an average light scattering parameter using the modified Beer–Lambert law, under the assumption that SpO2 was 100% for individual fish. In Experiment 2, fish were placed in a swim tunnel and subjected to hypoxic conditions and corresponding changes in SpO2 were estimated using the motion artifact and light scattering compensation approaches from Experiment 1.Results show that the suggested compensation approaches gives SpO2 estimates within the expected range (95% to 100%) under normoxic conditions. Under hypoxic conditions, changes in SpO2 that coincide with experiment events were observed, demonstrating that PPGs can be used to quantify such changes. The results from this pilot study therefore extend the selection of physiological parameters feasible to measure using electronic implants for Atlantic salmon. In doing so, the scope for physiological measurements is extended such that an improved understanding of physiological responses and tolerances in Atlantic salmon farming can be acquired, and ultimately be used to improve animal welfare in fish production.

Estimating SpO2 with Deep Oxygen Desaturations from Facial Video Under Various Lighting Conditions: A Feasibility Study.

This paper presents a feasibility study to collect data, process signals, and validate accuracy of peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) estimation from facial video in various lighting conditions. We collected facial videos using RGB camera, without auto-tuning, from subjects when they were breathing through a mouth tube with their nose clipped. The videos were record under four lighting conditions: warm color temperature and normal brightness, neutral color temperature and normal brightness, cool color temperature and normal brightness, neutral color temperature and dim brightness. The air inhaled by the subjects was manually controlled to gradually induce hypoxemia and lower subjects' SpO2 to as low as 81%. We first extracted the remote photoplethysmogram (rPPG) signals from the videos. We applied the principle of pulse oximetry and extracted the ratio of ratios (RoR) for two color combinations: Red/Blue and Red/Green. Next, we assessed SpO2 estimation accuracy against the ground truth, a Transfer Standard Pulse Oximeter. We have achieved an RMSE of 1.93% and a PCC of 0.97 under the warm color temperature and normal brightness lighting condition using leave-one-subject-out cross validation between two subjects. The results have demonstrated the feasibility to estimate SpO2 remotely and accurately using consumer level RGB camera with suitable camera configuration and lighting condition.Clinical Relevance- This work demonstrates that SpO2 can be estimated accurately using an RGB camera without auto-tuning and under warm color temperature, enabling continuous SpO2 monitoring applications that require noncontact sensing.

Review of recent advances in frequency-domain near-infrared spectroscopy technologies [Invited

Over the past several decades, near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has become a popular research and clinical tool for non-invasively measuring the oxygenation of biological tissues, with particular emphasis on applications to the human brain. In most cases, NIRS studies are performed using continuous-wave NIRS (CW-NIRS), which can only provide information on relative changes in chromophore concentrations, such as oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin, as well as estimates of tissue oxygen saturation. Another type of NIRS known as frequency-domain NIRS (FD-NIRS) has significant advantages: it can directly measure optical pathlength and thus quantify the scattering and absorption coefficients of sampled tissues and provide direct measurements of absolute chromophore concentrations. This review describes the current status of FD-NIRS technologies, their performance, their advantages, and their limitations as compared to other NIRS methods. Significant landmarks of technological progress include the development of both benchtop and portable/wearable FD-NIRS technologies, sensitive front-end photonic components, and high-frequency phase measurements. Clinical applications of FD-NIRS technologies are discussed to provide context on current applications and needed areas of improvement. The review concludes by providing a roadmap toward the next generation of fully wearable, low-cost FD-NIRS systems.

Automated Polarized Hyperspectral Imaging (PHSI) for ex-vivo and in-vivo Tissue Assessment.

Polarized light interactions with biological tissues can reveal information regarding tissue structure, while spectral characteristics are closely related to tissue composition. An integration of both modalities in a compact system could better assist tissue assessment. This study aims to develop a polarized hyperspectral imaging (PHSI) system that fulfills both linearly and circularly polarized hyperspectral imaging for in vivo and ex vivo applications. The system is comprised of a white LED, two linear polarizers, two liquid crystal variable retarders (LCVRs), and a hyperspectral snapshot camera. The system was calibrated to compute the full Stokes polarimetry. For tissue differentiation, fresh ex vivo mouse tissue specimens from kidney, liver, spleen, muscle, lung, and salivary gland of mice were imaged. The spectra of three features, named degree of polarization (DOP), degree of linear polarization (DOLP), and degree of circular polarization (DOCP), were generated. A k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) classifier was trained with multi-class spectra and 5-fold cross validation. It was found that DOP better differentiates tissue with an average accuracy of 0.87. Additionally, support vector machine (SVM) classifiers were trained to differentiate between each two of the organs, and it was determined that DOLP better identified kidney, liver, and spleen, whereas DOCP better identified muscle and lung tissues. Then, the setup was employed to image in vivo human fingers with and without a blood occlusion to qualitatively estimate oxygen saturation. Preliminary results demonstrate that both DOLP and DOCP reveal a distinction of oxygen saturation states. These results demonstrate the feasibility of the PHSI system for distinguishing between optical properties of tissues, which has the potential to reveal disease-related information for diverse medical applications.

Quantitative Blood Oxygenation Level Dependent Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Estimating Intra-renal Oxygen Availability Demonstrates Kidneys Are Hypoxemic in Human CKD

Kidney blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has shown great promise in evaluating relative oxygen availability. This method is quite efficacious in evaluating acute responses to physiological and pharmacologic maneuvers. Its outcome parameter, R2∗ is defined as the apparent spin-spin relaxation rate measured in the presence of magnetic susceptibility differences and it is measured using gradient echo MRI. Although associations between R2∗ and renal function decline have been described, it remains uncertain to what extent R2∗ is a true reflection of tissue oxygenation. This is primarily because of not taking into account the confounding factors, especially fractional blood volume (fBV) in tissue. This case-control study included 7 healthy controls and 6 patients with diabetes and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Using data before and after administration of ferumoxytol, a blood pool MRI contrast media, the fBVs in kidney cortex and medulla were measured. This pilot study independently measured fBV in kidney cortex (0.23 ± 0.03 vs. 0.17 ± 0.03) and medulla (0.36 ± 0.08 vs. 0.25 ± 0.03) in a small number of healthy controls (n= 7) versus CKD (n= 6). These were then combined with BOLD MRI measurements to estimate oxygen saturation of hemoglobin (StO2) (0.87 ± 0.03 vs. 0.72 ± 0.10 in cortex; 0.82 ± 0.05 vs. 0.72 ± 0.06 in medulla) and partial pressure of oxygen in blood (bloodPO2) (55.4 ± 6.5 vs. 38.4 ± 7.6 mmHg in cortex; 48.4 ± 6.2 vs. 38.1 ± 4.5 mmHg in medulla) in control versus CKD. The results for the first time demonstrate that cortex is normoxemic in controls and moderately hypoxemic in CKD. In the medulla, it is mildly hypoxemic in controls and moderately hypoxemic in CKD. Whereas fBV, StO2, and bloodPO2 were strongly associated with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), R2∗ was not. Our results support the feasibility of quantitatively assessing oxygen availability using noninvasive quantitative BOLD MRI that could be translated to the clinic.

Non-invasive estimation of hemoglobin, bilirubin and oxygen saturation of neonates simultaneously using whole optical spectrum analysis at point of care

The study was aimed to evaluate the performance of a newly developed spectroscopy-based non-invasive and noncontact device (SAMIRA) for the simultaneous measurement of hemoglobin, bilirubin and oxygen saturation as an alternative to the invasive biochemical method of blood sampling. The accuracy of the device was assessed in 4318 neonates having incidences of either anemia, jaundice, or hypoxia. Transcutaneous bilirubin, hemoglobin and blood saturation values were obtained by the newly developed instrument which was corroborated with the biochemical blood tests by expert clinicians. The instrument is trained using Artificial Neural Network Analysis to increase the acceptability of the data. The artificial intelligence incorporated within the instrument determines the disease condition of the neonate. The Pearson’s correlation coefficient, r was found to be 0.987 for hemoglobin estimation and 0.988 for bilirubin and blood gas saturation respectively. The bias and the limits of agreement for the measurement of all the three parameters were within the clinically acceptance limit.

Validity of the “Roth score” for hypoxemia screening

IntroductionThe Roth score is an alternative strategy to estimate oxygen saturation by using a simple verbal test. We designed this clinical study to assess the validity of the Roth score (Spanish version) as a screening test for hypoxemia. A secondary objective was to evaluate the agreement and consistency between the oxygen saturation obtained via pulse oximetry (SpO2) and arterial blood gas test (SaO2). MethodsAn observational study was conducted in two hospital emergency departments. Adult patients who underwent arterial blood gas tests were included in the analysis. Pulse oximetry values were determined, and the Roth score was applied in the Spanish language. The validity of the Roth score was assessed in terms of sensitivity and specificity by creating ROC curves and by calculating the area under the curve (AUC) for SpO2, SaO2, and oxygen pressure in the arterial blood (PaO2). Agreement between SpO2 and SaO2 values was assessed by using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), and consistency between both measures was calculated by following the method of Bland and Altman. ResultsThe ROC curve models of the Roth score results that were obtained for SaO2 < 90%, ≤92%, and < 95% had AUCs of 0.574, 0.462, and 0.543, respectively, for the highest number that was obtained in the test, as well as AUCs of 0.403, 0.376, and 0.495, respectively, for the maximum time that was used. The AUCs for PaO2 ≤ 60, ≤70, and ≤80 mmHg were 0.534, 0.568, and 0.512, respectively, for the maximum number that was obtained in the test, as well as AUCs of 0.521, 0.515, and 0.519, respectively, for the maximum time that was spent. The ICC between SaO2 and SpO2 was 0.817 (p < 0.001); additionally, the mean difference between the two measurements was −0.55. ConclusionThe Roth score performed in Spanish is not a valid test for hypoxemia screening. There is sufficient agreement and consistency between SaO2 and SpO2 measurements.

An autocorrelation modeling method for oxygen saturation measurement during low perfusion

BackgroundSpO2 is a widely used estimation of oxygen saturation owing to its convenient usage and low cost. However, SpO2 determination under low perfusion condition is severely affected by noise.MethodsIn this paper, an autocorrelation modeling method for the oxygen saturation measurement during low perfusion is presented. The proposed method mainly contains two steps: calculating the autocorrelation of the photoplethysmography (PPG) signals and modeling for the parameter calculation. The autocorrelation of the PPG signals can suppress the noise and extract pulse waves from low perfusion signals. The model can realize the calculation of SpO2 with the autocorrelation signals.ResultsExperiments showed that the new method had a good accuracy and stability under low perfusion condition (perfusion index (PI) ≤ 0.2%), and it was also motion-tolerant. Meanwhile, the new method showed a good performance for the oxygen saturation measurement under the condition of lower perfusion (PI = 0.1%).ConclusionsThe new method could realize the calculation of SpO2 by little computation and high efficiency without extra hardware. It has strong potential in real-time clinical use.
