Synthesis of various kinds of esters by four microbial lipases

Ester synthesis by microbial lipases, using homogeneous enzyme preparations, were investigated. The amount of synthesized ester was estimated by alkalimetry, and products were identified by thin-layer chromatography and infrared spectroscopy. Lipases from Aspergillus niger, Rhizopus delemar, Geotrichum candidum and Penicillium cyclopium synthesized esters from oleic acid and various primary alcohols. Only Geotrichum candidum lipase synthesized esters of secondary alcohols. Esters of tertiary alcohols, phenols or sugar alcohols were not synthesized by any lipase. Rather high concentrations of alcohol were required to synthesize the esters of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol or trimethylene glycol. Lipases from Aspergillus niger and Rhizopus delemar synthesized oleyl esters of various fatty acids and some dibasic acids. In contrast, lipases from Geotrichum candidum and Penicillium cyclopium synthesized oleyl esters only from medium or long chain fatty acids.

Methods for the isolation and characterization of constituents of natural products: III. Separation of alcohol esters of pyruvic acid 2,6-dinitrophenylhydrazone into classes by column and thin-layer chromatography

Quantitative column and qualitative thin-layer chromatographic procedures are described for separating a mixture of the 2,6-dinitrophenylhydrazone derivatives of pyruvic acid esters of primary, secondary, and tertiary aliphatic alcohols into classes. Magnesium oxide is used as the adsorbent in both procedures and separation of the classes follows a similar pattern. The derivatives change color from yellow to violet or blue on the adsorbent. Tertiary alcohol derivatives above butyl show a blue color whereas tertiary butyl and the primary and secondary alcohol derivatives are violet. Isomeric derivatives can also be separated by thin-layer chromatography on aluminum oxide G by using a solvent system containing a strong organic base.

Synthesis and pyrolysis of acetoacetic esters of tertiary acetylenic cycloaliphatic alcohols

1. Acetoacetic esters of tertiary cycloaliphatic acetylenic alcohols were synthesized, and their pyrolysis was studied. 2. Unlike the pyrolysis of acetoacetic esters of secondary alcohols of analogous structure, the pyrolysis of the acetoacetic esters of the tertiary alcohols goes relatively readily and leads to the corresponding trienones in satisfactory yields.

Some hydrogen phthalate esters of tertiary alcohols have been subjected to liquid phase pyrolysis. Olefinic mixtures and phthalic acid are the only products of the reaction. A study of the olefin distribution for each of the compounds pyrolyzed was made. Evidence of ionic character in liquid phase pyrolysis is presented.

The determination of boron in boric acid esters

Boric acid esters of high hydrolytic stability which would require prolonged periods of reflux for hydrolysis and subsequent titration of boric acid can be analyzed conveniently for boron by fusion with sodium carbonate, solution of the melt, and titration of the boric acid in the presence of mannitol. Boric acid esters of phenols or alkanolaniines which cannot be analyzed by litration of the boric acid due to the interference of the acidic phenolic or basic aminc residues can also be analyzed by the carbonate fusion method. The method has also been applied to esters of primary and tertiary alcohols as well as polyhalo, olcfinic, and carboxyl-containing borates. Further applicability to organoboron compounds containing boron-carbon and boron-nitrogen bonds is indicatcil. The PARR peroxide bomb method has also been found to be generally applicable for the determination of boron in boric acid esters.
