Meum is a genus of the family Apiaceae and includes only one species - Meum athamanticum Jacq. It is a highly aromatic, perennial plant, which can be found in Poland in the Sudetes and the Beskid Mountains and in the Sejneńskie Lake District. Its leaves are arranged in umbels and the flowers are mostly white. It grows in moist to moderately moist, acidic or neutral soils in cool to moderately warm and humid environments. In the researches on the composition of Meum, among other following components were identified: cinnamic acid esters, phthalide derivatives, sterol derivatives, terpenes and aromatic hydrocarbons. Furthermore, there were noticed differences in composition depending on the month of sample collection. Due to the contained substances, Meum is widely used in medicine. It was used in the treatment of many afflictions, for example nephrolithiasis, already in antiquity. In addition to the diuretic effect on the kidneys, it also stimulates the regeneration of organs such as the liver and skin and exhibits antiviral, antiparasitic and antimycotic activity.
