The Role of Lusheng Chinese Musical Instruments in Promoting Literacy through Educational Functions and Transmission

Lusheng is a traditional wind musical instrument cherished by various ethnic minorities in China. The objective of this study is to investigate the role of Lusheng Chinese musical instruments in promoting literacy through educational functions and transmission. Conducted in Guizhou Province, a region rich in ethnic diversity, this study employs qualitative methods and engages two key informants who are local artisans with interview and observation forms. The data analysis reveals multifaceted insights into Lusheng’s transmission and promotion. Findings highlight the challenges posed by modernization to traditional craftsmanship, emphasizing the urgency of preserving Lusheng production skills. The inclusion of Lusheng in the National Intangible Cultural Heritage list and the establishment of educational programs in primary, and secondary schools, and universities underscore the government’s commitment to safeguarding Lusheng culture. Moreover, the research underscores the transformative impact of modern media on Lusheng’s dissemination, and cross-cultural engagement is recognized as vital for expanding its influence. Balancing tradition and innovation remains a challenge. The study suggests collaborative efforts among government, academia, and society to develop a comprehensive conservation strategy, ensuring the continued transmission and promotion of Lusheng culture.

The First Teacher: A Phenomenological Study on Parents' Lived Experiences in the New Normal of Mathematics Education

The study looked into the lived experiences of parents in the new normal of Mathematics education. The outcomes of the study uncovered the personal challenges and struggles parents have had while participating in their child’s education, and provided useful data and trends to aid in the establishment of educational programs and policies across all levels in the education sector that address parental concerns about distance learning implementation. Qualitative phenomenological design was utilized in coming up withafact-findingstudywithadequateandaccurateinterpretationonthelivedexperiencesofparentswho have taken the responsibility as the learner’s educator. Moreover, eight participants took part in the study viapurposivesamplingfollowingthecriteriathattheirchildmustbeaGrade3bonafidestudentforschool year 2021 – 2022 and has undergone any of the modalities implemented in distance learning mandated by the institution sunder Department of Education – Cebu City Division. The study revealed four (4) significant themes namely: (1) parents’ perceptions, (2) parents’ challenges in distance learning, (3) fountain of support, and (4) realizations and aspirations and specifically included nineteen (19) subthemes. Parents play a vital role in guiding the learners to achieve the same quality of learning they receive in schools following the COVID – 19 pandemic and this reflected the diverse challenges they have encountered to attain learning. Regardless of the challenges they have met, their perspectives are centered to the educational progress and well–being of their children, even if it means sacrificing lot of their time, effort and resources.

Survey Results Following the Establishment of Educational Program in Multi-Organ Procurement with Simulation Using Large Animals

Introduction To maximize the organ utility, multi-organ retrieval of five organs including the heart, lung, liver, pancreas, and kidney, has become routine in most cases of organ procurement in Japan. Multi-organ procurement however is not an easy procedure, which requires special technique and training. Therefore, the educational program for multi-organ procurement for young transplant surgeons has been established since 2014. We report the survey results over the last 3 years. Materials and Methods From 2014 to 2016, 305 young surgeons participated in the one-day training program for organ procurement of five organs; the heart, lung, liver, pancreas, and kidney. This annual program is consisted of lectures and examination in the morning and on-site or video demonstration of multi-organ procurement and simulation by trainees using pigs in the afternoon. Survey was conducted after completion of the program. Seventy-nine of 99 trainees (80%) in 2014 (G1), 104 of 105 (99%) in 2015 (G2), and 102 of 102 (100%) in 2016 G3) responded to the survey. Results of survey for 3 years as well as the comparison among 3 years with chi-square analysis in regard with each question were reported. Results Survey showed that 56% of trainees was between 5 to 15 years after graduation. Ninety seven percent were male. The trainees were divided into 20% for heart, 21% for lung, 37% for liver, and 23% for pancreas. Eighty two percent attended first time, and 58% experienced an operator. Ninety seven percent thought that the program was useful, 88% obtained confidence for operation, and 94% learned cooperation with other teams. Although 77% in G1 thought duration for the simulation of operation was too short. this complaint decreased to 24% in G2 and 13% in G3 after making duration of the simulation longer (P=0.0001). At the same time, although 48% in G1 thought that extent of the operating room was too smal, the complaint decreased to 8% in G2, 5% in G3 (p=0.0001) after making the program into twice in a year. Ninety nine percent thought that this educational program was meaningful and should be continued at least once or twice a year (89%). Conclusion The novel educational program for multi-organ procurement from deceased donor was established in Japan, which seems to contribute to bring up young surgeons to perform the exact performance in multi-organ procurement.

Effective Strategies for Improving Hand Hygiene in Developing Countries

Hand hygiene (HH) is the most important infection control intervention that has proved to decrease the risk of hospital-acquired infections in medical care [Jarvis WR, Lancet 344(8933):1311–1312, 1994]. However, ensuring consistent adequate HH in healthcare institutions remains a challenge in many healthcare settings. The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched the SAVE LIVES program targeting HH through a multimodal implementation strategy to improve HH compliance worldwide [Pittet D et al., Infect Control Hosp Epidemiol 30(7):611–622, 2009]. To be successfully implemented, the program needs (1) specific environmental requirements within healthcare institutions, (2) available HH products, (3) establishment of educational programs, (4) creation of tools to assess healthcare worker (HCW) behavioral changes, and (5) managerial empowerment and support of institutional administrations. This review will discuss the HH strategies that have been implemented so far in some developing countries, their implication on healthcare institutions, and the most important challenges encountered in different settings and cultural backgrounds. Of particular importance is the education to improve knowledge and the continuous assessment of behavioral changes. In addition, program leadership and financial support are very important determinant features for successful HH implementation. Health policy makers should establish a strong HH framework to implement consistently in all healthcare institutions in collaboration with ministries of health, taking into account the socio-economic, behavioral, and technical factors in each developing country.

Research on Improving the Education System for Cultivating Expert Talent in the Aerospace Sector

Objectives: Survey of aerospace-related major students was conducted to evaluate their satisfaction levels (or importance levels) for the various curriculum and support systems of convergence-oriented talent development. Methods/Statistical Analysis: Statistical forecast analysis software IBM SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) was utilized for the research data of the aerospace major students' understanding of their curriculum. This data can be used as base data for future curriculum settings. Findings: The difference between this study and prior research on convergence curriculum is as follows. First, whereas the subject of previous research was convergence education based on the convergence of disparate fields of study, this research dealt specifically with the aerospace field where cutting-edge technologies converge. Second, while previous studies focused on the general direction of convergence education and its teachers, this research proposed a direction for convergence education from the learners' point of view. Application/Improvements: The research analyzed which factors affected the development of convergence-oriented talent development. The results may be used for the future planning and establishment of education programs to facilitate convergence-oriented talent development.

Suicidal ideations, plans and attempts in primary care: cross-sectional study of consultants at primary health care system in Morocco.

IntroductionThe aim of the study is to estimate the prevalence of suicidal ideation among Moroccan consultants in primary health care system.MethodsWe conducted a cross sectional survey in three health care centers in two cities of Morocco to estimate the prevalence of suicidal ideation, plan and suicide attempts among 396 consultants in the primary health care system, using the Mini International neuropsychiatric interview. Patients were 18 years and older, without known psychiatric or chronic somatic disease. Statistical analysis was performed by the SPSS 13.0 software.ResultsThe prevalence of suicidal ideation was 5.3%, and 2.7% of the patients planned their suicide and 1.2% tried to commit suicide. The multivariate analysis did not demonstrate significant association.ConclusionSuicidal ideation, plan and suicide attempts are prevalent in primary health care patients, but they are still under diagnosed. An adequate training of physicians and the establishment of education programs is essential to reduce the rate of suicide.

Evaluation Nurses' Practices toward Application of Apgar Scores for Newly Born Baby at Delivery Room in Baghdad City

The study title evaluate nurses’ practices toward application of Apgar scores for newly born baby at delivery room in Baghdad city for the purposes of finding the relationship between the nurses' practices and their demographic characteristics.A descriptive study was carried out in teaching and non teaching hospitals (Al-Numan General Hospital, Al-aluwa Delivery Hospital in Baghdad City from the 10th September 2012 to 10th January 2013. A purposive (non probability) sample of (20) nurses who are working inthe delivery room in these hospital. The data was collected through using constructed questionnaire which comprises (25) items add filled by using interview technique.The reliability of the questionnaire was determined through a pilot study and validity through a panel of experts. The data were analyzed through the application of descriptive statistic that including frequency, percentage, and the application of inferential statistical procedures, which include Pearson correlation coefficient, mean of score, standard deviation and chi-square.The finding of the study there was no statistical significance differences between the nurses' practices and their demographic characteristics espial educational level, years of experience in the delivery room, years of employment in the nursing, and the finding of the study was indicated that the nurses have poor practices about application of Apgar scores for newly born baby at delivery room. The study recommended that nurses 'practices should beimproved toward application of Apgar scores for newly born infant at delivery room throughout establishment of educational program

Prevalence of Overweight and Obesity Among Primary School Children in Tanzania: Experiences from Kinondoni and Njombe Districts

The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which overweight and obesity are challenges among primary school children in Kinondoni and Njombe districts. The study sought to investigate those aspects in terms of prevalence, causes and impacts on social, health as well as children learning behaviours and outcomes. Systematic random sampling was used to select schools while stratified sampling and simple random sampling were used in selecting pupils and teachers. Measurement of weights and height were done to determine Body Mass Index (BMI), measurements of skinfolds were also done to determine body fat percentage. Questionnaires, semi-structured interview schedule and focus group discussion guides were also used. Findings revealed an average of 13.5% children, were overweight and obese. Economy status, household occupations, nutrition and inactivity were significant causes of overweight and obesity. Hypertension, excessive sweating, teasing and peer rejection were common to obese children. In addition, overweight and obese children were reported to underperform in academic and physical activities. The study revealed that overweight and obesity were not friendly healthy conditions to children, thus a need to work it out. The study suggests for establishment of education programs through mass Medias, to raise people’s awareness on implications of obesity in children’s health, social, and learning behaviours and outcomes.

Limb salvage surgery and wound treatment in the establishment of globally standardized diabetes, amputation, and limb salvage centers to address lower extremity morbidity and mortality in Thailand.

Diabetes and its consequences, particularly diabetic foot ulcerations and amputations, are increasing exponentially on a global level. Universal interest exists in the establishment of educational programs, clinics, and patient materials. However, the availability and skills needed to develop, implement, and consistently manage diabetes and related problems are lacking. This article reviews problems related to care of the diabetic foot, with a focus on Thailand as a model. Recommendations are made to assist with the development and implementation of limb salvage centers for the treatment of the at-risk diabetic foot. The guidelines presented may be applied to any countries where diabetic foot care is in the initial stages of development.

Fatores associados ao consumo de bebidas alcoólicas pelos adolescentes de uma Escola Pública da cidade de Maringá, Estado do Paraná

Nowadays, there is a trend towards the increase in alcoholic beverage consumption, mainly by adolescents. In this study, factors associated with the consumption of alcoholic beverage by adolescents from a Public sSchool were identified. The data were collected by means for individual interviews conducted by questionnaire. In the group of adolescents who consume alcoholic beverages, it was verified that often guardians or parents are aware of this consumption, and 32.30% of adolescents admitted they began the habit of drinking with family members, while the remainder declared it was the influence of friends. Wine and beer were the most consumed alcoholic beverages by adolescents. These results demonstrate that society is permissive towards the habit of teenage drinking. This consumption might be an attempt to avoid the difficulties of social settings, but it must be emphasized that the consumption of these substances increases the possibility of young people displaying risk behaviors, leading to involvement with car accidents. For this reason, the establishment of educational programs aimed at adolescents as well as their parents or guardians are necessary, in order to raise awareness of the harmful effects of the excess alcohol consumption.

Potential bycatch of seabirds and turtles in hook-and-line fisheries of the Itaipava Fleet, Brazil

The decline of populations of certain seabirds and sea turtles around the world is partly related to their incidental capture in large-scale fisheries. However, the impacts of small-scale fisheries on endangered seabirds and sea turtles, being carried out in many places around the world, have been largely neglected by scientists and governments. We monitored 178 fishing days and described a range of poorly known hook-and-line commercial fisheries carried out by the Itaipava fleet, southeastern Brazil, composed by 497 vessels and deploying hooks from 18°S to 35°S. Seven fisheries were defined: fast trolling for tuna and tuna-like species, slow trolling for Bigeye tuna, handlining, surface longline for Dolphinfish, pelagic longline for Swordfish, bottom dropline, and pole-and-line with live bait. We observed bycatch of 47 seabirds of six species and 45 turtles of four species. Capture rates were higher for the surface longline for Dolphinfish (0.15 birds/1000 hooks and 1.08 turtles/1000 hooks), slow trolling for Bigeye tuna (0.41 birds/day) and handlining targeting Yellowfin tuna (0.61 birds/day). Endangered Spectacled petrel ( Procellaria conspicillata), Atlantic Yellow-nosed ( Thalassarche chlororhynchos), and Black-browed ( T. melanophris) albatrosses were the main seabirds caught. Immature Loggerhead turtles ( Caretta caretta) and immature or adult Leatherback turtles ( Dermochelys coriacea) were the main sea turtles affected by the surface longline for Dolphinfish. Monitoring the fleet and bycatch levels, development of mitigation measures, establishment of educational programs, government control over the fleet, and enforcement, are urgently required for the hook-and-line fisheries described in the present study.

Biomedical Engineering and The Whitaker Foundation: A Thirty-Year Partnership

The Whitaker Foundation, established in 1976, will close in 2006. It will have made awards totaling 805 million US dollars, with over 710 million US dollars in biomedical engineering. Close to 1,500 faculty members received research grants to help them establish academic careers in biomedical engineering, and over 400 graduate students received fellowship support. The Foundation also supported the enhancement or establishment of educational programs in biomedical engineering, especially encouraging the formation of departments. The number of biomedical engineering departments almost tripled during the past 10 years, now numbering close to 75. Leveraging of grants enabled the construction of 13 new buildings. With the field firmly established, the grant program supporting new faculty members will be the one missed the most. New opportunities, however, are emerging as interdisciplinary research is being embraced by both public and private funding sources. The life sciences will be increasingly incorporated into all areas of engineering, and it is expected that such "biofication" will pose both opportunities and challenges to biomedical engineering.

Nonlinearities, Feedbacks and Critical Thresholds within the Earth's Climate System

The Earth's climate system is highly nonlinear: inputs and outputs are not proportional, change is often episodic and abrupt, rather than slow and gradual, and multiple equilibria are the norm. While this is widely accepted, there is a relatively poor understanding of the different types of nonlinearities, how they manifest under various conditions, and whether they reflect a climate system driven by astronomical forcings, by internal feedbacks, or by a combination of both. In this paper, after a brief tutorial on the basics of climate nonlinearity, we provide a number of illustrative examples and highlight key mechanisms that give rise to nonlinear behavior, address scale and methodological issues, suggest a robust alternative to prediction that is based on using integrated assessments within the framework of vulnerability studies and, lastly, recommend a number of research priorities and the establishment of education programs in Earth Systems Science. It is imperative that the Earth's climate system research community embraces this nonlinear paradigm if we are to move forward in the assessment of the human influence on climate.
