This research aims to analyze language errors in the expository essays of class VIII students at SMP Negeri 7 Gunungsitoli. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. The data for this research is the worksheet of students who wrote expository essays. The data source in this research was class VIII students at SMP Negeri 7 Gunungsitoli. The data analysis techniques used are data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Based on the research results, it shows that spelling errors in class VIII students at SMP Negeri 7 Gunungsitoli included 104 errors consisting of: 48 errors in the use of capital letters were found, including 27 errors in usage at the beginning of sentences, 18 errors in place names, in There is 1 error in the divine name, and there are 2 errors in the title of the essay. There was only 1 error in using italics. There were 25 errors in writing derived words, including 24 errors in the prefix and 1 error in the suffix. There were 6 errors in writing the word re-form. There were 6 errors in writing prepositions found. There were 18 errors in the use of punctuation marks, including 8 errors in the use of the dot (.), 4 errors in the use of the comma (,) and 6 errors in the use of the hyphen (-).

Gene Updater: a web tool that autocorrects and updates for Excel misidentified gene names

Opening and processing gene expression data files in Excel runs into the inadvertent risk of converting gene names to dates. As pathway analysis tools rely on gene symbols to query against pathway databases, the genes that are converted to dates will not be recognized, potentially causing voids in pathway analysis. Molecular pathways related to cell division, exocytosis, cilium assembly, protein ubiquitination and nitric oxide biosynthesis were found to be most affected by Excel auto-conversion. A plausible solution is hence to update these genes and dates to the newly approved gene names as recommended by the HUGO Gene Nomenclature Committee (HGNC), which are resilient to Excel auto-conversion. Herein, we developed a web tool with Streamlit that can convert old gene names and dates back into the new gene names recommended by HGNC. The web app is named Gene Updater, which is open source and can be either hosted locally or at https://share.streamlit.io/kuanrongchan/date-to-gene-converter/main/date_gene_tool.py. Additionally, as Mar-01 and Mar-02 can each be potentially mapped to 2 different gene names, users can assign the date terms to the appropriate gene names within the Gene Updater web tool. This user-friendly web tool ensures that the accuracy and integrity of gene expression data is preserved by minimizing errors in labelling gene names due to Excel auto-conversions.

Imam Sulaiman bin Ahmad Al-Tabarani was a famous Muhaddith of 3rd and 4th century AH. He has significant services in the field of "Ilm ul Elal". His famous book in this regard is "Al-Mujam Al Awsat". He has explained the "Al-Elal" of ahadith in this book. He mentioned "Elal" are based on the differences and disagreements of the narrators. The said book is unique in this regard, however, there are errors in same places. A critical research study of its five hundred (500) ahadith has found thirty-six (36) errors in it. Most of the errors are found in the credentials. These include errors in narrator's names, their father names, and errors in the credentials. These errors are mentioned in the article. Arguments has been given regarding these errors. This research invites a critical research study of this book in this regard, so that it can be corrected. This article is divided into preface and nine axes and conclusion. Annotation and Textual Criticism of the Chapter on “ Emperor Hongzhi and his Ministers” in the Major Events of Ming History

<p>本文逐條校讀《明史紀事本末‧弘治君臣》的文本，註出其可能的史源，並以史源校正文本之訛誤。並以校注結果，兼談作者的編纂水平與史學。今尋其史源，以《皇明大政紀》為最主要史源，全書只有三條文本沒有參考引用《皇明大政紀》。不少條文本，其他史書皆不載，獨《皇明大政紀》載之；是獨家史源。由於編者未參考《明實錄》，全篇99條，時間錯置多達47處。而人名、官名和文字缺漏亦有18處，是本篇缺點。但作者能根據私家史書撰寫一些官方史書忌諱的史事，是本篇優點。其敘事完全配合「谷應泰論贊」對弘治朝政治的評價，論述其君臣之互動，大臣不斷進諫，弘治帝也能採納。對於朝政的負面現象，也不迴避。就此而論，《明史紀事本末‧弘治君臣》仍不失為一篇良史之作。</p> <p> </p><p>This is an annotated version of the chapter on “ Emperor Hongzhi and his Ministers” in the Major Events of Ming History, tracing the likely sources upon which the account was based, and using the sources to correct errors in the text. And the essay will further discuss the editorial and historiographical abilities of the compiler. The Chronicle of Major Political Events of the Ming Dynasty was the most important source for this work. In the entire volume, there were only three entries that did not cite the Chronicle of Major Political Events of the Ming Dynasty. Several of the entries cited no historical sources other than the Chronicle of Major Political Events of the Ming Dynasty, and hence it could be the only source. Because the compiler did not consult the Ming Veritable Records, among the ninety-nine entries in the volume, there were as many as forty-seven errors in dates. And there were eighteen errors in names and titles of individuals. These are the weaknesses of this volume. However, the compiler was able to draw upon works by private historians to recount historical events omitted from the official records. This is the strength of this volume. The narrative completely matches the evaluation in “Gu Yingtai’s Assessment” on the Hongzhi reign regarding the interactions between the Hongzhi emperor and his ministers, that the high officials made endless admonitions of the emperor and the emperor was fairly receptive to their opinions. As for the negative aspects of governance during this reign, the work does not avoid them. And hence, the “Emperor Hongzhi and his Ministers” chapter in the Major Events of Ming History can be regarded as a fine historical record.</p> <p> </p>

What's in a name? Nomenclature for colour aberrations in birds reviewed

A review is presented of the seven commonest types of colour aberrations in birds together with suggestions for a standardised universal nomenclature to identify and distinguish these aberrations. These aberrations are: Leucism (congenital absence of melanin-producing cells), Progressive Greying (progressive loss of melanin-producing cells), Albino (total absence of melanin due to lack of the key enzyme), Brown (incompletely coloured melanin), Ino (even less completely coloured melanin), Dilution (altered deposition of melanin) and Melanism (altered distribution of melanin). It is proposed that these terms should be based not only on the resulting plumage but also should distinguish the underlying processes resulting in the aberrant pigmentation. By reviewing previously used terms for colour aberrations, and cross-referencing these with my proposed terminology, errors in earlier names are pointed out, and resulting in a more comprehensive nomenclature for colour aberrations found in wild birds. ‘There has been some confusion in the past in the recording and description of variant plumages … and this paper represents an attempt to clarify some parts of it.’ (Harrison 1963a)

In defense of Louis Pasteur: Critique of Gerald Geison's deconstruction of Pasteur's discovery of molecular chirality.

Louis Pasteur discovered the phenomenon of molecular chirality, based on his studies of tartrate crystals. His finding remains one of the most important discoveries in the history of chemistry and a fundamentally important chemical phenomenon, with essential implications in biology. In his 1995 book The Private Science of Louis Pasteur, the eminent historian of science Gerald L. Geison (1943-2001) was highly critical of much of Pasteur's work including his discovery of molecular chirality. The in-depth analysis provided in this article indicates, however, that the negative assessment of Pasteur's chirality work by Geison is entirely without scientific basis. Criticisms of Pasteur in the book for other "transgressions" in his chirality work, such as supposed influences of his personal biases and stubbornly held a priori notions, misrepresentation of his scientific work in his publications and lectures, and unethical and career-minded conduct, are also not supported by the evidence. Other troubling features of the book include a broad failure to assure accuracy in a variety of fundamental and important information, including errors in names, dates, events, referencing, indexing, and French-language text.

This content analysis of The New York Times corrections found that the majority were for errors in people's names, titles, non-age numbers and dates. Most originated in the Features and Lifestyles and the National News sections and were assessed to have little impact on society.

Field validation of secondary data sources: a novel measure of representativity applied to a Canadian food outlet database

BackgroundValidation studies of secondary datasets used to characterize neighborhood food businesses generally evaluate how accurately the database represents the true situation on the ground. Depending on the research objectives, the characterization of the business environment may tolerate some inaccuracies (e.g. minor imprecisions in location or errors in business names). Furthermore, if the number of false negatives (FNs) and false positives (FPs) is balanced within a given area, one could argue that the database still provides a “fair” representation of existing resources in this area. Yet, traditional validation measures do not relax matching criteria, and treat FNs and FPs independently. Through the field validation of food businesses found in a Canadian database, this paper proposes alternative criteria for validity.MethodsField validation of the 2010 Enhanced Points of Interest (EPOI) database (DMTI Spatial®) was performed in 2011 in 12 census tracts (CTs) in Montreal, Canada. Some 410 food outlets were extracted from the database and 484 were observed in the field. First, traditional measures of sensitivity and positive predictive value (PPV) accounting for every single mismatch between the field and the database were computed. Second, relaxed measures of sensitivity and PPV that tolerate mismatches in business names or slight imprecisions in location were assessed. A novel measure of representativity that further allows for compensation between FNs and FPs within the same business category and area was proposed. Representativity was computed at CT level as ((TPs +|FPs-FNs|)/(TPs+FNs)), with TPs meaning true positives, and |FPs-FNs| being the absolute value of the difference between the number of FNs and the number of FPs within each outlet category.ResultsThe EPOI database had a "moderate" capacity to detect an outlet present in the field (sensitivity: 54.5%) or to list only the outlets that actually existed in the field (PPV: 64.4%). Relaxed measures of sensitivity and PPV were respectively 65.5% and 77.3%. The representativity of the EPOI database was 77.7%.ConclusionsThe novel measure of representativity might serve as an alternative to traditional validity measures, and could be more appropriate in certain situations, depending on the nature and scale of the research question.

Enhancing the routine health information system in rural southern Tanzania: successes, challenges and lessons learned

To describe and evaluate the use of handheld computers for the management of Health Management Information System data. Electronic data capture took place in 11 sentinel health centres in rural southern Tanzania. Information from children attending the outpatient department (OPD) and the Expanded Program on Immunization vaccination clinic was captured by trained local school-leavers, supported by monthly supervision visits. Clinical data included malaria blood slides and haemoglobin colour scale results. Quality of captured data was assessed using double data entry. Malaria blood slide results from health centre laboratories were compared to those from the study's quality control laboratory. The system took 5 months to implement, and few staffings or logistical problems were encountered. Over the following 12 months (April 2006-March 2007), 7056 attendances were recorded in 9880 infants aged 2-11 months, 50% with clinical malaria. Monthly supervision visits highlighted incomplete recording of information between OPD and laboratory records, where on average 40% of laboratory visits were missing the record of their corresponding OPD visit. Quality of microscopy from health facility laboratories was lower overall than that from the quality assurance laboratory. Electronic capture of HMIS data was rapidly and successfully implemented in this resource-poor setting. Electronic capture alone did not resolve issues of data completeness, accuracy and reliability, which are essential for management, monitoring and evaluation; suggestions to monitor and improve data quality are made.

Accuracy of references in three critical care nursing journals

Reference lists serve as a resource for the reader and provide support for the author's ideas. Errors in references reflect poorly on the author and journal and may prevent locating the referenced articles. The purpose of this study was to determine the number and types of errors in references in 3 critical care nursing journals: Journal of PeriAnesthesia Nursing, American Journal of Critical Care, and Critical Care Nurse. There were 2,444 citations in 13 issues of these journals during the study period. Ten percent of the references from each journal was selected randomly and analyzed for accuracy. Of the 244 references examined, 56 contained errors for an overall error rate of 22.9%. Major errors, such as misspelled or omitted author names and initials, occurred in 19.6% of the references. Minor errors, including non–first page discrepancies, occurred in 4.5% of the references. Errors in author names combined with incorrect or missing volume or issue numbers were the 2 most common errors, accounting for 61% of errors. The overall error rate for these 3 critical care nursing journals was lower than the rates reported for other nursing journals. © 2002 by American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses.

Accuracy of references in four pediatric nursing journals

Inaccurate references hinder retrieval of documents, may prevent researchers from examining all of the work by an author, and may result in authors not getting credit for their work. This study determines the number and types of errors in references in four widely read pediatric nursing journals. Of the 190 references examined, 79 of them contained an error, for an overall error rate of 41.6%. Major errors, which prevent the rapid retrieval of information, occurred in 28.9% of the references. Minor errors occurred at half the rate (13.7%) of major errors. Errors in the titles of articles, chapters, and books were the most common type of mistake followed by errors in authors' names. Accuracy of Reference Citations in Five Entomology Journals

The bibliographical reference citations in 5 core entomology journals were examined for accuracy to determine if error rates were similar to those of other fields. The journals selected included Archives of Insect Biochemistry, Ecological Entomology, Insect Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Journal of Insect Physiology, and Pesticide Biochemistry and Physiology. Citations printed in the 1st issue of each journal in 1992 were compared with the original publications to determine their accuracy. An average of 30.1 % of citations in the journals contained 1 or more errors. Most errors appeared iIi journal article titles, followed by errors in authors' names and in pagination. Of the 49 articles examined, only 3 had completely error-free reference lists.
