Bounds on the Error Probability of Block Codes over the q-Ary Erasure Channel

In this paper, tight bounds on the block error probability of linear block codes over order-q finite fields for the q-ary erasure channel, under maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding, are developed. Upper bounds are obtained for uniform parity-check ensembles, sparse parity-check ensembles, general parity-check ensembles (e.g., Gallager regular nonbinary low-density parity-check ensembles), and for any given linear code with known distance spectrum. The tightness of the upper bounds is confirmed both by the comparison with simple lower bounds and, for Gallager low-density parity-check ensembles, by extensive Monte Carlo simulations. Exploiting the derived bounds, it is shown how already for short blocks and small q>2 sparse ensembles attain block error probabilities close to those of idealized maximum distance separable (MDS) codes, down to low error probabilities, whereas in the same regime binary codes show visible losses with respect to the Singleton bound. Thanks to the accurate performance estimates, the developed bounds can support the design of near-optimum erasure correcting codes with short and moderate lengths.

Lower Bounds on the Error Probability of Block Codes Based on Improvements on de Caen's Inequality

New lower bounds on the error probability of block codes with maximum-likelihood decoding are proposed. The bounds are obtained by applying a new lower bound on the probability of a union of events, derived by improving on de Caen's lower bound. The new bound includes an arbitrary function to be optimized in order to achieve the tightest results. Since the optimal choice of this function is known, but leads to a trivial and useless identity, we find several useful approximations for it, each resulting in a new lower bound. For the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel and the binary-symmetric channel (BSC), the optimal choice of the optimization function is stated and several approximations are proposed. When the bounds are further specialized to linear codes, the only knowledge on the code used is its weight enumeration. The results are shown to be tighter than the latest bounds in the current literature, such as those by Seguin (1998) and by Keren and Litsyn (2001). Moreover, for the BSC, the new bounds widen the range of rates for which the union bound analysis applies, thus improving on the bound to the error exponent compared with the de Caen-based bounds.

Tight exponential upper bounds on the ml decoding error probability of block codes over fully interleaved fading channels

We derive tight exponential upper bounds on the decoding error probability of block codes which are operating over fully interleaved Rician fading channels, coherently detected and maximum-likelihood decoded. It is assumed that the fading samples are statistically independent and that perfect estimates of these samples are provided to the decoder. These upper bounds on the bit and block error probabilities are based on certain variations of the Gallager bounds. These bounds do not require integration in their final version and they are reasonably tight in a certain portion of the rate region exceeding the cutoff rate of the channel. By inserting interconnections between these bounds, we show that they are generalized versions of some reported bounds for the binary-input additive white Gaussian noise channel.

On improved bounds on the decoding error probability of block codes over interleaved fading channels, with applications to turbo-like codes

We derive here improved upper bounds on the decoding error probability of block codes which are transmitted over fully interleaved Rician fading channels, coherently detected and maximum-likelihood (ML) decoded. We assume that the fading coefficients during each symbol are statistically independent (due to a perfect channel interleaver), and that perfect estimates of these fading coefficients are provided to the receiver. The improved upper bounds on the block and bit error probabilities are derived for fully interleaved fading channels with various orders of space diversity, and are found by generalizing some previously introduced upper bounds for the binary-input additive white Gaussian nose (AWGN) channel. The advantage of these bounds over the ubiquitous union bound is demonstrated for some ensembles of turbo codes and low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, and it is especially pronounced in a portion of the rate region exceeding the cutoff rate. Our generalization of the Duman and Salehi bound (Duman and Salehi 1998, Duman 1998) which is based on certain variations of Gallager's (1965) bounding technique, is demonstrated to be the tightest reported upper bound. We therefore apply it to calculate numerically upper bounds on the thresholds of some ensembles of turbo-like codes, referring to the optimal ML decoding. For certain ensembles of uniformly interleaved turbo codes, the upper bounds derived here also indicate good match with computer simulation results of efficient iterative decoding algorithms.

Coded diversity on block-fading channels

This paper considers coded diversity schemes over block-fading Rician channels using random coding techniques. Two random coding upper bounds on the error probability of block codes are derived: a new bound and a simpler but looser bound assuming binary input distribution. Also, a new lower bound for any block code is derived using the strong converse to channel coding theorem. The lower bound shows that the new random coding upper bound is quite tight. Furthermore, it is shown that the maximum achievable diversity order in a block-fading channel with finite interleaving depends not only on the number of subchannels L, but also on the code rate R and that the performance can only marginally be improved by increasing the block length of the code. The random coding upper bound and the lower bound are shown to converge to the capacity outage for large channel block lengths N, demonstrating that the capacity outage can be used for estimating the error probability of coded diversity schemes.

On weak convergence of probability measures, channel capacity and code error probabilities

The relationship between weak convergence of channel probability measures, channel capacity, and error probability of block codes is examined for memoryless channels with general input and output alphabets. It is shown that channel capacity is a lower semi-continuous function and that every block code with maximal probability of error /spl delta/ for a nominal channel for any /spl epsiv/>0 can be modified such that the modification has a probability of error less than /spl delta/+/spl epsiv/ for all channels in a sufficiently small neighborhood of the nominal channel.

Letter: On uniform distance property of multilevel block 8‐PSK modulation

AbstractFor upper bounding the word error probability of block codes by application of the union bound, in general the uniform distance property (distance invariance) of the code must be guaranteed. This property says that the distance spectrum of a code is independent of the choice of the reference codeword. In the sequel new sufficient conditions for multilevel block 8‐PSK modulation codes to be distance invariant are derived.
