A simple closed formula is proposed for the short-time density matrix of a one-dimensional anharmonic oscillator in thermal equilibrium. The formula can be used in an iterative numerical calculation of the equilibrium density matrix at a given temperature starting from the density matrix at a higher temperature. It is shown that the proposed formula substantially reduces the number of iterations in the computation of thermally averaged physical quantities.
