Spatial Development of Strong Storm-Induced Ionospheric Perturbations during 25–27 August 2018

The 25–27 August 2018 geomagnetic storm was the third largest storm in the 24th solar cycle. It was a surprising space event that originated from low-level solar activity. This study provides an overview of the temporal–spatial behaviors of plasma irregularities as functions of geographic longitude, latitude, and altitude using ground-based (GNSS receivers and ionosonde) instruments and space-borne Swarm satellites. The results not only reveal enhanced equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) and hemispheric asymmetry over the Asian–Australian and American sectors at a particular time but also hemispheric asymmetric features of global ROT in the main and recovery phases. Additionally, this storm triggered positive plasma irregularities in altitudes of 100 to 150 km near the Auroral zone, and the changed ratio of bottom-side plasma irregularities exceeded 250%. This finding has been cross-validated by other instruments and models. Furthermore, the storm significantly affected the thermospheric O/N2 density ratio, equatorial electrojet, and vertical E×B drifts. The equatorial and mid-latitude plasma irregularities may be a combined action of thermospheric composition change, equatorial electrojet, and vertical E×B drifts. Finally, the storm induced positive Joule heating irregularities in the Auroral ionosphere in altitudes of 100 to 400 km with a maximum changed ratio of over 200%, as well as enhanced cross-Polar voltage to ~90 kv. The Polar ionospheric irregularities may be associated with additional energy input through particle precipitation, Joule heating, and ionospheric current intensification.

Linkage of Equatorial Ionization Anomaly With the Day‐To‐Day Occurrence of Postsunset Irregularities and Scintillation in Low‐Latitude Region Around 110°E

The zonal electric field and meridional wind are two major factors to affect the formation of both equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) and plasma irregularities in equatorial and low-latitude regions, the correlation between the EIA characteristics and the occurrence of both irregularities and the sequent scintillation is always concerned. In this study, we investigated the relationship between the day-to-day occurrence of scintillation based on ground-based GPS observations at Sanya (18.3°N, 109.6°E; dip lat.: 12.8°N) and Hongkong (22.4°N, 114.2°E; dip lat.: 16.1°N), China, and day-to-day variations of EIA inferred from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment observations in equinoctial months (March-April and September-October) during high solar activities (2012–2014). The results indicated that EIA strength can be linked with the day-to-day occurrence of post-sunset irregularities and scintillation, and post-sunset scintillation would be likely to occur as electron density above the EIA trough is low and EIA is strong. There are other key factors to affect the initiation and evolution of irregularities besides zonal electric field and meridional wind, such as seed perturbations or wave-like structures. The day-to-day variations of electron density in EIA regions, EIA strength and EIA asymmetry were not well correlated quantitatively with the scintillation intensity representing by daily S4 maximum in low-latitude region. These results can help us understand and predict the day-to-day variability of irregularities and scintillation in equatorial and low-latitude regions.

Analysis of the Ionospheric Irregularities and Phase Scintillation at Low and Middle Latitudes Based on Swarm Observations

This study presents a statistical analysis of the ionospheric irregularities and topside ionospheric scintillation at low and middle latitudes by using in situ electron density and upward-looking total electron content data measured by the Swarm constellation during 2014–2021. The main purpose of this study is to determine whether the phase scintillation could present similar seasonal, longitudinal, latitudinal, local time, and solar activity features as the in situ ionospheric irregularities do at low and middle latitudes, and how the irregularities affect the phase scintillation. The results are summarized as follows: (1) At low latitudes, the occurrence rate of equatorial plasma irregularities (EPIs) at the equinoxes and December solstice peaks before midnight, but during the June solstice, the EPIs mainly occur after midnight. The occurrence rate of EPIs has a positive correlation with solar activity. The distribution of topside scintillation occurrence is relatively consistent with EPIs, but during the June solstice, the scintillation occurrence rate remains at a very low level. (2) The midlatitude irregularities mainly occur after midnight, and their occurrence rate is negatively correlated with solar activity. Midlatitude irregularities mainly occur during the solstices, concentrated over the Pacific region during the June solstice and over the Pacific American sector during the December solstice. Especially, the distribution of midlatitude irregularities has hemispheric asymmetry, with a higher occurrence rate in the winter hemisphere. However, the occurrence of midlatitude scintillation is comparable in both hemispheres during the June solstice, and it concentrates in the southern hemisphere during the December solstice. (3) The EPIs concentrate more at the altitudes of Swarm A, while the midlatitude irregularities mainly occur at the altitudes of Swarm B.

Coherence Scale and Directivity of Nighttime Equatorial Plasma Irregularities: Results From Swarm Formation Flight

AbstractSince the launch in 2013, the three satellites of the Swarm constellation have been conducting multipoint observations of ionospheric plasma density. The variety of their flight formations is advantageous for investigating (a) coherence scale and (b) directivity of nighttime Equatorial Plasma Irregularities (EPIs). In this study, we address the two topics statistically using in situ plasma density measured at 2 Hz rates by the Swarm constellation from 2013 to 2021. Maximum cross‐correlation coefficients between two Swarm density profiles decrease as longitude differences between the observation pair increase. The coefficient is larger than 0.6 only when two satellites are within about 0.1° in geographic longitude (GLON), which approximately corresponds to 10 km. When two density profiles are considerably correlated, we can determine preferred bearings of the EPI structure. A majority of EPIs conform to the backward‐C shapes astride the dip equator. The preference for backward‐C is more conspicuous later at night than in the early evening. Different GLON sectors exhibit slightly different directions of EPI structures, but the behavior is not well organized with the geomagnetic declinations of the respective sectors. EPI directions do not display monotonic dependence on Ap or F10.7, but further studies during the coming solar maximum are necessary to better represent high solar/geomagnetic activity.

The study of topside ionospheric irregularities during geomagnetic storms in 2015

In this study, the variations of topside ionospheric irregularities during 24 geomagnetic storms with Dst ≤ −50 nT in 2015 were examined through an algorithm specifically designed to detect a significant level of ionospheric irregularities. The algorithm was developed through the use of several parameters derived from the topside total electron content (TEC) observations from GRACE, Swarm-C, and Swarm-B. The local time characteristics of the observed equatorial plasma irregularities (EPIs) were analyzed during different phases of the storms, within 30° S–30° N magnetic latitudes. By comparing its results with corresponding in-situ electron density data and the results of previous studies, the algorithm was found to be efficient. It was observed that the detected EPIs at different stages of the storm showed local time dependence. For instance, EPIs were observed during nighttimes, but took place in the daytime occasionally during the storm main phase. Furthermore, the percentage occurrence rates were most prominent during the main phase at the post-sunset sector within less than 6 h of the storm onset. On the other hand, the occurrence rates became prominent in the post-midnight/morning sector during the recovery phase and even higher than observed in the post-sunset sector. Based on these findings it was concluded that the dominant driver of the enhanced EPIs during the post-midnight/daytime sector could be associated with disturbance dynamo electric fields.

The nighttime ionospheric response and occurrence of equatorial plasma irregularities during geomagnetic storms: a case study

Recent studies revealed that the long-lasting daytime ionospheric enhancements of Total Electron Content (TEC) were sometimes observed in the Asian sector during the recovery phase of geomagnetic storms (e.g., Lei (J Geophys Res Space Phys 123: 3217–3232, 2018), Li (J Geophys Res Space Phys 125: e2020JA028238, 2020). However, they focused only on the dayside ionosphere, and no dedicated studies have been performed to investigate the nighttime ionospheric behavior during such kinds of storm recovery phases. In this study, we focused on two geomagnetic storms that happened on 7–8 September 2017 and 25–26 August 2018, which showed the prominent daytime TEC enhancements in the Asian sector during their recovery phases, to explore the nighttime large-scale ionospheric responses as well as the small-scale Equatorial Plasma Irregularities (EPIs). It is found that during the September 2017 storm recovery phase, the nighttime ionosphere in the American sector is largely depressed, which is similar to the daytime ionospheric response in the same longitude sector; while in the Asian sector, only a small TEC increase is observed at nighttime, which is much weaker than the prominent daytime TEC enhancement in this longitude sector. During the recovery phase of the August 2018 storm, a slight TEC increase is observed on the night side at all longitudes, which is also weaker than the prominent daytime TEC enhancement. For the small-scale EPIs, they are enhanced and extended to higher latitudes during the main phase of both storms. However, during the recovery phases of the first storm, the EPIs are largely enhanced and suppressed in the Asian and American sectors, respectively, while no prominent nighttime EPIs are observed during the second storm recovery phase. The clear north–south asymmetry of equatorial ionization anomaly crests during the second storm should be responsible for the suppression of EPIs during this storm. In addition, our results also suggest that the dusk side ionospheric response could be affected by the daytime ionospheric plasma density/TEC variations during the recovery phase of geomagnetic storms, which further modulates the vertical plasma drift and plasma gradient. As a result, the growth rate of post-sunset EPIs will be enhanced or inhibited.

Investigation of equatorial plasma bubble irregularities under different geomagnetic conditions during the equinoxes and the occurrence of plasma bubble suppression

In this study, we investigated the behavior of equatorial plasma bubble irregularities under different geomagnetic conditions during March 2015 and September 2017. It was used Total Electron Content (TEC) data obtained from SGOC (6,89 oN, 79,87 oE), IISC (12,94 oN, 77,57 oE) and HYDE (17,40 oN, 78,50 oE) receiver stations which located between the trough and the crest of the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA). We used the Rate of TEC change (ROT) and Rate of TEC change index (ROTI) to represent plasma bubbles irregularities. These indices are a well proxy for the ionospheric fluctuations and can be used to describe features of plasma bubbles irregularities. The equatorial plasma bubble irregularities for all stations were observed between 13 UT and 20 UT (during postsunset period) during equinoxes. The intensity level of ROTI during postsunset periods was greater than 1 TECU min−1. Also, the values of mean ROTI (ROTIave) between 13 UT and 20 UT have values greater than 0,4 TECU min−1 while the values of ROTIave at the other hours have values less than 0,4 TECU min−1. The geomagnetic activity has a significant effect on the occurrence of equatorial plasma bubbles irregularities. The occurrence rate of equatorial plasma bubble irregularities observed during postsunset hours increased as geomagnetic activity increases. It also was observed that the main phases of geomagnetic storms have the triggering effect of storms on equatorial plasma bubble irregularities observed at postsunset hours while the recovery phases of geomagnetic storms have the suppression effect of storms on equatorial plasma bubble irregularities. Asymmetry between two equinoxes was observed. The occurrence rate of equatorial plasma bubble irregularities in the March equinox was much larger than that of the September equinox. The occurrence probability of equatorial plasma bubbles for March Equinox was maximum with 45,1% at 17 UT while the occurrence probability of equatorial plasma bubbles for September Equinox was maximum with 11,5% at 16 UT. The enhancements and reductions in the latitudinal gradient of VTEC show similar behaviors with the occurrence of equatorial plasma irregularities. The EIA during postsunset hours contributes significantly to the occurrence of equatorial plasma bubbles irregularities.

Global View of Ionospheric Disturbance Impacts on Kinematic GPS Positioning Solutions During the 2015 St. Patrick's Day Storm

AbstractThe 2015 St. Patrick's Day geomagnetic storm caused numerous disturbances of the ionosphere, particularly, plasma irregularities, large‐scale traveling ionospheric disturbances, and equatorial ionization anomaly enhancement. This study for the first time quantifies the global‐scale impacts of the ionospheric disturbances on Global Positioning System (GPS) precise point positioning (PPP) solutions during this extreme space weather event by taking advantage of 5,500 + GNSS stations installed worldwide. The overall impact was more severe at high latitudes, while PPP degradation at low latitudes was associated with different types of ionospheric disturbances. Specifically, our results show that kinematic PPP solutions degraded following an intensified auroral particle precipitation during the storm's main phase (06–23 UT) when up to ~70% of the high‐latitude stations experienced degraded position solutions in the multimeter range at 16–18 UT. Around magnetic noon and midnight, the storm‐induced plasma irregularities caused notable PPP errors (>10 m) at high latitudes. Interhemispheric differences were observed with a more severe impact seen in the Southern Hemisphere, where PPP outage lasted for ~12 hr during the second main phase (12–23 UT). At low latitudes, post sunset equatorial plasma irregularities were suppressed across most longitudes, but large PPP errors (>2 m) associated with storm‐induced plasma bubbles were registered at the Indian sector at 14–18 UT. The storm‐induced equatorial ionization anomaly enhancement and large‐scale traveling ionospheric disturbances were responsible for the low‐latitude PPP degradation at dayside sectors. This study fills the research gap between physical and practical aspects of severe ionospheric storm effects.

Statistical Analysis of Equatorial Plasma Irregularities Retrieved From Swarm 2013–2019 Observations

AbstractIn this study, we present a statistical analysis of equatorial plasma irregularities (EPIs) by using in situ plasma density measurements of the Swarm constellation from December 2013 to December 2019. The occurrence patterns for both postsunset and postmidnight EPIs with respect to longitude, season, local time, latitude, solar activity, and geomagnetic activity level are investigated. The main findings are as follows: (1) The postsunset/postmidnight EPIs occurrence rates exhibit different longitudinal and seasonal dependence: The postsunset EPIs have the maximum occurrence rate over the American‐Atlantic sectors during the December solstice and equinoxes, and the postmidnight EPIs have the maximum occurrence rate during the June solstice, especially over the African sector. (2) The postsunset EPIs occurrence rates have a positive correlation with solar activity, while the postmidnight EPIs are negatively correlated with it. (3) The latitudinal distribution of EPIs exhibits a double‐peak structure around ±5° magnetic latitude with a more significant peak in the summer hemisphere. (4) The EPIs occurrence rate increases with increasing geomagnetic activity level. (5) The main controlling factors for the distribution of postsunset EPIs are the magnetic declination angle, equatorial vertical E × B drift, and thermospheric zonal wind. For the postmidnight EPIs, the main controlling factors are likely to be atmospheric gravity waves and equatorward thermospheric meridional wind associated with midnight temperature maximum.

Quasiperiodic Rising Structures in the E‐F Valley Region Below the Equatorial Plasma Bubble: A Numerical Study

AbstractThis paper presents a numerical study aiming to understand the generating mechanism of poorly studied equatorial plasma irregularities known as equatorial quasiperiodic echoes. Employing a two‐dimensional model of the collisional interchange instability, the simulations are able to reproduce the spatial periodic features of this kind of irregular structures. The usage of an instability seeding source considering an overlap of two gravity waves with different wavelengths was capable to produce such quasiperiodic structures. The results suggest that the penetration of the equatorial plasma bubble fringe fields in typical altitudes of the valley region may be the physical mechanism responsible for the structures. Additionally, the simulation results indicate that the lower wavelength gravity wave dominates over the quasiperiodic nature of the these irregularities. The simulations results present considerable agreement with radar and in situ measurements of these quasiperiodic structures.

Postmidnight equatorial plasma irregularities on the June solstice during low solar activity – a case study

Abstract. We present a case study of unusual spread-F structures observed by ionosondes at two equatorial and low-latitude Brazilian stations – São Luís (SL: 44.2∘ W, 2.33∘ S; dip angle: −6.9∘) and Fortaleza (FZ: 38.45∘ W, 3.9∘ S; dip angle: −16∘). The irregularity structures observed from midnight to postmidnight hours of moderate solar activity (F10.7 < 97 sfu, where 1 sfu = 10−22 W m−2 s−1) have characteristics different from typical post-sunset equatorial spread F. The spread-F traces first appeared at or above the F-layer peak and gradually became well-formed mixed spread F. They also appeared as plasma depletions in the 630.0 nm airglow emissions made by a wide-angle imager located at the nearby low-latitude station Cajazeiras (CZ: 38.56∘ W, 6.87∘ S; dip angle: −21.4∘). The irregularities appeared first over FZ and later over SL, giving evidence of an unusual westward propagation or a horizontal plasma advection. The drift-mode operation available in one of the ionosondes (a digital portable sounder, DPS-4) has enabled us to analyze the horizontal drift velocities and directions of the irregularity movement. We also analyzed the neutral wind velocity measured by a Fabry–Pérot interferometer (FPI) installed at CZ and discuss its possible role in the development of the irregularities.

Geomagnetically Conjugate Observations of Equatorial Plasma Irregularities From Swarm Constellation and Ground‐Based GPS Stations

AbstractThe near‐polar orbit satellites of Swarm mission provide a good opportunity to investigate the conjugacy of equatorial plasma irregularities (EPIs) since their trajectories at low latitudes are basically aligned with fixed geographical longitude. However, the Swarm in situ electron density occasionally shows EPIs at only one hemisphere at this longitude. In this study, we provide detailed analysis of such EPI events from the in situ electron densities and onboard global positioning system (GPS) measurements of Swarm low pair satellites, and simultaneous GPS data from two geomagnetically conjugate ground stations at the Africa longitudes. The result indicates that when Swam in situ electron density sometime shows EPIs at only one hemisphere, the GPS scintillations are still observed from the Swarm onboard receiver and by the two conjugate ground stations. It implies that the EPIs should generally elongate along the geomagnetic flux tube. More than two‐year statistic results show that the onset time of scintillation in the northern station is on average 16 and 18 min earlier than that in the southern station for September equinox and December solstice in 2015, while for March equinox in 2016 the onset time of scintillation of northern station is about 11 min later than that of southern station, which indicates the asymmetry features of EPIs along the flux tube. Further analysis of nearly three‐year GPS data from two conjugate stations at the Asia longitudes, we find that during solar maximum years the local sunset time plays an important role for causing the difference of onset time of scintillation between two conjugate stations.

Climatology of GPS signal loss observed by Swarm satellites

Abstract. By using 3-year global positioning system (GPS) measurements from December 2013 to November 2016, we provide in this study a detailed survey on the climatology of the GPS signal loss of Swarm onboard receivers. Our results show that the GPS signal losses prefer to occur at both low latitudes between ±5 and ±20∘ magnetic latitude (MLAT) and high latitudes above 60∘ MLAT in both hemispheres. These events at all latitudes are observed mainly during equinoxes and December solstice months, while totally absent during June solstice months. At low latitudes the GPS signal losses are caused by the equatorial plasma irregularities shortly after sunset, and at high latitude they are also highly related to the large density gradients associated with ionospheric irregularities. Additionally, the high-latitude events are more often observed in the Southern Hemisphere, occurring mainly at the cusp region and along nightside auroral latitudes. The signal losses mainly happen for those GPS rays with elevation angles less than 20∘, and more commonly occur when the line of sight between GPS and Swarm satellites is aligned with the shell structure of plasma irregularities. Our results also confirm that the capability of the Swarm receiver has been improved after the bandwidth of the phase-locked loop (PLL) widened, but the updates cannot radically avoid the interruption in tracking GPS satellites caused by the ionospheric plasma irregularities. Additionally, after the PLL bandwidth increased larger than 0.5 Hz, some unexpected signal losses are observed even at middle latitudes, which are not related to the ionospheric plasma irregularities. Our results suggest that rather than 1.0 Hz, a PLL bandwidth of 0.5 Hz is a more suitable value for the Swarm receiver. Keywords. Rocket in situ observation of equatorial plasma irregularities in the region between E and F layers over Brazil

Abstract. A two-stage VS-30 Orion rocket was launched from the equatorial rocket launching station in Alcântara, Brazil, on 8 December 2012 soon after sunset (19:00 LT), carrying a Langmuir probe operating alternately in swept and constant bias modes. At the time of launch, ground equipment operated at equatorial stations showed rapid rise in the base of the F layer, indicating the pre-reversal enhancement of the F region vertical drift and creating ionospheric conditions favorable for the generation of plasma bubbles. Vertical profiles of electron density estimated from Langmuir probe data showed wave patterns and small- and medium-scale plasma irregularities in the valley region (100–300 km) during the rocket upleg and downleg. These irregularities resemble those detected by the very high frequency (VHF) radar installed at Jicamarca and so-called equatorial quasi-periodic echoes. We present evidence suggesting that these observations could be the first detection of this type of irregularity made by instruments onboard a rocket.

Scintillation measurements at Bahir Dar during the high solar activity phase of solar cycle 24

Abstract. Small-scale ionospheric disturbances may cause severe radio scintillations of signals transmitted from global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs). Consequently, small-scale plasma irregularities may heavily degrade the performance of current GNSSs such as GPS, GLONASS or Galileo. This paper presents analysis results obtained primarily from two high-rate GNSS receiver stations designed and operated by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in cooperation with Bahir Dar University (BDU) at 11.6° N, 37.4° E. Both receivers collect raw data sampled at up to 50 Hz, from which characteristic scintillation parameters such as the S4 index are deduced. This paper gives a first overview of the measurement set-up and the observed scintillation events over Bahir Dar in 2015. Both stations are located close to one another and aligned in an east–west, direction which allows us to estimate the zonal drift velocity and spatial dimension of equatorial ionospheric plasma irregularities. Therefore, the lag times of moving electron density irregularities and scintillation patterns are derived by applying cross-correlation analysis to high-rate measurements of the slant total electron content (sTEC) along radio links between a GPS satellite and both receivers and to the associated signal power, respectively. Finally, the drift velocity is derived from the estimated lag time, taking into account the geometric constellation of both receiving antennas and the observed GPS satellites.

Highly localized unique electrodynamics and plasma irregularities linked with the 17 March 2015 severe magnetic storm observed using multitechnique common‐volume observations from Gadanki, India

AbstractIn this paper we study equatorial electrodynamics and plasma irregularities linked with the 17 March 2015 severe magnetic storm in the Indian sector by using common volume observations made by the Gadanki Ionospheric Radar Interferometer, airglow imager, Digisonde, and GPS receiver established at Gadanki (13.5°N, 79.2°E). Observations show that with the initiation of the storm at ~06:00 UT on 17 March, which happened to be midday in the Indian sector, the low‐latitude ionosphere responded in tune with the storm‐induced electric field and by the sunset time the base of the F layer ascended to an altitude of 470 km with a peak upward velocity of 50 m s−1 eventually manifesting equatorial plasma bubble and irregularities causing strong GPS scintillation. The most important finding found in this study is the confinement of plasma bubble and irregularities in a narrow longitude zone of 69°E–98°E. Results also show reversal of zonal drift of the irregularities from ~120 m s−1 eastward drift to ~120 m s−1 westward drift in a time span of ~30 min. Both observations are shown to be linked with very special electrodynamical conditions induced by the magnetic storm‐related electric field in the dusk sector. Intriguing details of the longitudinally localized electrodynamics and plasma irregularities are discussed in terms of prompt penetration and disturbed dynamo electric field effects.

Ionospheric storm effects and equatorial plasma irregularities during the 17–18 March 2015 event

AbstractThe intense magnetic storm on 17–18 March 2015 caused large disturbances of the ionosphere. Based on the plasma density (Ni) observations performed by the Swarm fleet of satellites, the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment mission, and the Communications/Navigation Outage Forecasting System satellite, we characterize the storm‐related perturbations at low latitudes. All these satellites sampled the ionosphere in morning and evening time sectors where large modifications occurred. Modifications of plasma density are closely related to changes of the solar wind merging electric field (Em). We consider two mechanisms, prompt penetration electric field (PPEF) and disturbance dynamo electric field (DDEF), as the main cause for the Ni redistribution, but effects of meridional wind are also taken into account. At the start of the storm main phase, the PPEF is enhancing plasma density on the dayside and reducing it on the nightside. Later, DDEF takes over and causes the opposite reaction. Unexpectedly, there appears during the recovery phase a strong density enhancement in the morning/prenoon sector and a severe Ni reduction in the afternoon/evening sector, and we suggest a combined effect of vertical plasma drift, and meridional wind is responsible for these ionospheric storm effects. Different from earlier studies about this storm, we also investigate the influence of storm dynamics on the initiation of equatorial plasma irregularities (EPIs). Shortly after the start of the storm main phase, EPIs appear in the postsunset sector. As a response to a short‐lived decline of Em, EPI activity appears in the early morning sector. Following the second start of the main phase, EPIs are generated for a few hours in the late evening sector. However, for the rest of the storm main phase, no more EPIs are initiated for more than 12 h. Only after the onset of recovery phase does EPI activity start again in the postmidnight sector, lasting more than 7 h. This comprehensive view of ionospheric storm effects and plasma irregularities adds to our understanding of conditions that lead to ionospheric instabilities.

TheSwarmsatellite loss of GPS signal and its relation to ionospheric plasma irregularities

In this study we investigated conditions for loss of GPS signals observed by the Swarm satellites during a 2 year period, from December 2013 to November 2015. Our result shows that the Swarm satellites encountered most of the total loss of GPS signal at the ionization anomaly crests, between ±5° and ±20° magnetic latitude, forming two bands along the magnetic equator, and these low-latitude events mainly appear around postsunset hours from 19:00 to 22:00 local time. By further checking the in situ electron density measurements of Swarm, we found that practically, all the total loss of GPS signal events at low latitudes are related to equatorial plasma irregularities (EPIs) that show absolute density depletions larger than 10 × 1011 m−3; then, the Swarm satellites encountered for up to 95% loss of GPS signal for at least one channel and up to 45% tracked less than four GPS satellites (making precise orbit determination impossible). For those EPIs with density depletions less than 10 × 1011 m−3, the chance of tracked GPS signals less than four reduces to only 1.0%. Swarm also observed total loss of all GPS signal at high latitudes, mainly around local noon, and these events are related to large spatial density gradients due to polar patches or increased geomagnetic/auroral activities. We further found that the loss of GPS signals were less frequent after appropriate settings of the Swarm GPS receivers had been updated. However, the more recent period of the mission, e.g., after the GPS receiver settings have been updated, also coincides with less severe electron density depletions due to the declining solar cycle, making GPS loss events less likely. We conclude that both lower electron density gradients and appropriate GPS receiver settings reduce the probability for Swarm satellites loss of GPS signals.

Scale analysis of equatorial plasma irregularities derived from Swarm constellation

In this study, we investigated the scale sizes of equatorial plasma irregularities (EPIs) using measurements from the Swarm satellites during its early mission and final constellation phases. We found that with longitudinal separation between Swarm satellites larger than 0.4°, no significant correlation was found any more. This result suggests that EPI structures include plasma density scale sizes less than 44 km in the zonal direction. During the Swarm earlier mission phase, clearly better EPI correlations are obtained in the northern hemisphere, implying more fragmented irregularities in the southern hemisphere where the ambient magnetic field is low. The previously reported inverted-C shell structure of EPIs is generally confirmed by the Swarm observations in the northern hemisphere, but with various tilt angles. From the Swarm spacecrafts with zonal separations of about 150 km, we conclude that larger zonal scale sizes of irregularities exist during the early evening hours (around 1900 LT).

Ionospheric variability is one of the main threats to GNSS-based techniques as ionospheric parameters measurement and precise positioning. In this work the effect of equatorial plasma irregularities on signal loss and its influence on the precise point positioning accuracy are shown. These results highlight the importance of the receiver capacity to deal with signal loss and its effects on positioning accuracy.
