Policy and Institutions for Environmental Sustainability and Green Growth: The Moderating Effect of Renewable Energy and CO2 Emissions

Reducing environmental degradation due to the waste of natural resources and increasing global warming have been the main sustainable development goals for preserving biodiversity and ensuring sustainable growth established by the United Nations since 2015. Elucidating these goals requires effective and efficient environmental policies, substantial financial resources, and technological innovation to ensure an energy transition and reduce fossil fuel divestment and polluting technologies. In this context, this paper aims to examine the impact of environmental sustainability policy and institutions on green economic growth. Using a CS-ARDL panel model for a sample of 69 low-income countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America over the period 2005-2020, we find that the effect of environmental sustainability policy and institutions on green GDP per capita is positive and statistically significant. The intensity of this effect is moderated by increases in renewable energy consumption and decreases in CO2 emissions. Furthermore, the subsample analysis indicates that the relationships between environmental sustainability policy and institutions and green growth remain positive for the four continents. In the long run, the intensity of this effect is stronger in Europe and Asia than in America and Africa. Moreover, these impacts are more effective as renewable energy increases and CO2 emissions decrease. It seems to be more important in Europe and Asia than in America and Africa. Overall, low-income countries should pay particular attention to policy and institutional index for environmental sustainability to promote green growth, taking into account the moderating effect of renewable energy consumption and CO2 emissions reduction.

Assessing the role of public policy in fostering global eco-innovation

The growing urgency of environmental problems, such as climate change, pollution, and waste management, has highlighted the importance of eco-innovation. It includes the development of sustainable solutions for goods and services. As corporations adopt sustainability practices, governments are increasingly essential in propelling eco-innovation. Innovation and economic growth are inextricably linked since innovation helps reduce costs, increases productivity, and builds knowledge. Eco-innovation, requiring stakeholders' collaboration and knowledge sharing where public policy plays a critical role in fostering eco-innovation, is frequently catalyzed by climate change and environmental issues. This paper provides an assessment of the public policy of several countries and its part in promoting eco-innovation. It explores how policy tools such as research and development investments, regulations, incentives, and infrastructure can be used successfully. It also explores how such instruments influence small and medium enterprises due to their importance in environmental sustainability policy. This research contributes to knowledge and adds to the literature by offering a global approach to the subject, complementing previous regional/single-country studies. It demonstrates the worldwide consequences of policy actions on eco-innovation and provides recommendations for policymakers, businesses, academics, and environmental stakeholders. The results highlight how governmental support is integral to ensuring the sustainability of a green future with economic benefits.

A STUDY OF GREEN HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES ADOPTED BY THE NEW AGE ORGANIZATIONS

This study looks at the Green Human Resource Management (GHRM) strategies used by Google, a company that is well-known throughout the world for its cutting-edge approaches to workplace culture and sustainability. The corporate agenda is starting to prioritize environmental issues more and more, thus it's important to understand how companies like Google incorporate sustainability into their HRM strategy in order to promote a more environmentally conscious and responsible business environment.Through a comprehensive review of literature and analysis of available resources, this study examines Google's environmental sustainability initiatives, policies, and employee involvement techniques through a thorough evaluation of the literature and analysis of the resources available. Recruitment and selection, performance management, workplace rules and procedures, supplier partnerships, community involvement, employee training and development, and measuring and reporting environmental performance are some of the key topics of inquiry. The results show that Google's GHRM policies are engrained in the company culture and demonstrate a dedication to social responsibility and environmental stewardship. The organization places a strong emphasis on the empowerment and participation of its workforce, promoting a sustainable culture through programs including training, rewards for success, and chances for community service. The implementation of GHRM techniques has several challenges, such as striking a balance between business and environmental objectives, guaranteeing alignment across various organizational roles, and surmounting resistance to change. Organizations may learn a great deal from Google's experiences and lessons gained when creating and implementing their own green HRM policies, which will encourage environmental responsibility and help create a more sustainable future.

Propelling Sustainability: A Comprehensive Analysis of Actionable Green Aviation Initiatives In The Aerospace Industry

ABSTRACT The aerospace industry is increasingly recognizing the imperative of transitioning towards sustainable practices to mitigate environmental impact and ensure long-term viability. This study offers a comprehensive analysis of green aviation initiatives within the Indian aerospace industry, focusing on current state assessment, key challenges, policy effectiveness, stakeholder perspectives, adoption of sustainable technologies, economic implications, environmental impact assessment, policy gap analysis, and recommendations for advancement. Data was collected from 103 industry stakeholders through surveys and analyzed using descriptive statistics and correlation analysis. Findings reveal a significant level of engagement in green aviation initiatives, with high adoption rates observed across various technologies and practices such as biofuels, energy-efficient aircraft design, and environmental programs. However, regulatory constraints, technological limitations, and cultural barriers emerge as prominent challenges hindering widespread adoption. Policy effectiveness varies among stakeholders, indicating the need for continuous evaluation and refinement. Key recommendations include enhancing policy coherence, fostering industry collaboration, investing in research and development, and promoting public awareness. Correlation analysis highlights positive relationships between the adoption of sustainable technologies and environmental impact, policy effectiveness and industry perception, economic implications and stakeholder engagement, environmental impact and policy compliance, adoption of sustainable practices and operational efficiency, and policy gap analysis and recommendations.

Persistence of disaggregate energy RD&D expenditures in top-five economies: Evidence from artificial neural network approach

The motivation of this paper is to investigate the resistance of countries' energy research and development (RD&D) expenditures to random shocks. The analysis includes the five countries (France, Germany, Japan, the United States, and the United Kingdom) that are the biggest investors in RD&D in fossil fuels, renewables, energy efficiency, and nuclear energy. Thus, economies will be able to take precautions against global shocks in producing sustainable energy policies. To achieve this aim, this paper uses the artificial neural network approach, which uses a distributed computing model that can store and generalize data after a learning period. Empirical results widely depend on countries and distinct energy technology policy fields. The key findings provide evidence that RD&D expenditures, except for renewables, do not tend to mean revert. The economies of Japan, Germany, and the United States should make more renewable investments to reduce the resistance of renewable energy sources to shocks and thus produce policies for both environmental sustainability and energy security. The economies of France and the United Kingdom can ensure energy security by continuing their sustainable energy policies.

The influence of nuclear energy research and development investments on environmental sustainability: evidence from the United States and France

ABSTRACT Recent Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) reports have highlighted the inadequacy of environmental sustainability efforts. Thus, it is clear that current efforts towards environmental sustainability (SDG 13) and affordable and clean energy (SDG 7) policies are insufficient and a comprehensive policy agenda is needed. Existing literature limitedly addresses the determinants of environmental sustainability but relatively ignores the impact of nuclear energy research and development investments (NCI) and green environment on environmental quality. The motivation of this study is to fill this research gap and propose an overarching policy structure to achieve SDGs. In this context, this study investigates the effects of green environment, economic growth, human capital, and NCI on environmental sustainability comparatively for the United States and France through the Asymmetric Autoregressive Distributed Lag, which considers structural break. Based on the empirical analysis results, economic growth and trade openness harm environmental sustainability, while positive shocks in NCI improve environmental quality in both countries. Negative NCI shocks deteriorate environmental quality in the United States but not France. In conclusion, this study provides detailed environmental sustainability policies for the United States and France.

The dynamics of green innovation, environmental policy and energy structure for environmental sustainability; Evidence from AfCFTA countries

Environmental pollution caused by many factors including energy use has been a major problem around the world. A sustainable energy structure can help improve environmental sustainability. The roles of green innovation and environmental policies in determining an effective energy structure and achieving environmental sustainability have gained attention in recent research, but there are gaps to fill. Given the rapid development and unification of Africa to boost economies, this article aims to establish whether or not green innovation and environmental policies have influenced energy structure and environmental sustainability. Thirty-one (31) countries out of the 55 African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) countries were used in the analysis. The study adopted the Fully modified ordinary least squares (FMOLS) and the Dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS) models in its analysis. Major empirical results revealed that a 1% increase in green innovations reduces ecological footprints by 0.7% and 1% (DOLS and FMOLS). Also, a percentage increase in environmental policies can reduce ecological footprints by 10.12% (DOLS) and 21.87% (FMOLS). A 1% rise in renewable energy improves their environmental sustainability by 3.26% (DOLS) and 1.82% (FMOLS). A 1% consumption of non-renewable energy reduces environmental sustainability by 4.59% (DOLS) and 1.55% (FMOLS). These results provide insights into the importance of green innovation, environmental policy, and renewable energy in improving environmental sustainability. Stringent measures and policies to boost green investment, sustainable energies, and environmental sustainability are necessary for the region.

Green finance and high-pollution corporate compensation - Empirical evidence from green credit guidelines

With the increasing focus on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) on a global scale, stakeholders expect businesses to transform and enhance social responsibility. Over time, ESG and CSR have developed into vital performance metrics for businesses. Businesses are actively putting improvement measures into place in response to this new paradigm in order to stay competitive in this changing environment. China's dual commitment to CSR and sustainable development is in line with wider objectives, such as resolving issues of pay inequality. In 2012, the China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC) unveiled the “Green Credit Guidelines” (GCG), which take corporate governance's environmental considerations into account. These regulations set standards and specifically target high-pollution corporations. Companies may need to restructure their corporate structures and create efficient governance mechanisms in order to comply with these regulations and reduce carbon emissions. This will have an impact on the compensation packages of executives and regular employees.The most important question is how the “GCG” will affect the wage disparity in highly polluting companies. This study examines the 2012 “GCG” and its potential to reduce internal wage disparities, viewing it as a critical element of green financial policy. The paper uses data from Chinese A-share listed companies from 2007 to 2020. Besides, it uses the Difference-in-Differences method to assess the impact of China's GCG, treating its implementation as a quasi-natural experiment and controlling for concurrent policy effects to precisely identify its net impact on corporate carbon emissions and internal wage disparities.The findings show that “GCG” considerably closed internal wage disparities. Furthermore, the “GCG” has a path of guidance, incentives, and punishments that reduce internal wage disparities and promote a more equitable wage distribution within businesses. According to heterogeneity analysis, policies have a greater impact on the wage gap in businesses that are highly dependent on outside funding and have political connection. In order to achieve a compensation balance and meet the objectives of social responsibility and corporate sustainable development, the government should strengthen the complementary effects of green financial policies.The compensation balance in highly polluting companies has important theoretical and practical ramifications. On the one hand, it represents the convergence of income equality, corporate governance, and environmental responsibility. It helps to expand knowledge of sustainable development, fair compensation, and environmental policies. On the other hand, the widening pay disparity between executives and average employees reflects the exacerbation of income inequality in China, which could potentially impact companies' long-term development. Conversely, a well-balanced pay plan can improve worker productivity and motivation while empowering stakeholders to make wise investment choices.

How Sustainable is Environmental Economics? A Review of Research Trends and Implications

Embarking on a comprehensive review of the Environmental Economics literature, we employed a bibliometric approach to gather 6,118 articles published between 1993 and 2023 from Scopus-indexed journals. Leveraging various software tools, including RStudio, VOSviewer, and Excel, we analyzed the data to identify the most active scientific contributors in terms of countries, institutions, sources, documents, and authors. Our examination revealed a notable upward trend in publication starting from 2017, underscoring the increasingly diverse applications of Environmental Economics across domains such as Sustainability, Environmental Footprints, Carbon Emissions, Climate Impact, Navigating Environmental Governance, Policies for Sustainable Futures, Economic Approaches, and Environmental Sustainability. Notably, China, the United States, and the United Kingdom emerged as the top three contributors to the literature. The findings of our study offer valuable insights for market participants, particularly in understanding how Environmental Economics can inform their decision-making processes.

The Role of Renewable Energies for Sustainable Energy Governance and Environmental Policies for the Mitigation of Climate Change in Nigeria

In response to the escalating global challenges posed by climate change, this research investigates the role of renewable energies in shaping sustainable energy governance and environmental policies for climate change mitigation in Nigeria. The study underscores the pivotal relationship between renewable energies and governance structures, emphasizing the need for innovative policy approaches. In Nigeria, a country grappling with a surge in energy demand, particularly in densely populated urban areas, this research delves into the current state of renewable energy adoption, technological aspects, and the policy and regulatory frameworks governing its integration. The study scrutinizes the technological aspects of solar, wind, hydropower, and biomass energy in Nigeria, exploring advancements in solar photovoltaic, hydropower, bioenergy, and geothermal technologies. Additionally, it dissects the nation's policy landscape, assessing key initiatives such as the National Energy Policy, the National Policy and Guidelines on Renewable Electricity, and Feed-in Tariffs. Furthermore, the research examines the alignment of environmental policies with renewable energy goals, highlighting the importance of targets, incentives, and regulatory frameworks. It also scrutinizes incentives for sustainable practices in Nigeria, including investment tax credits, the Renewable Energy Development Fund, and concessional import duty rates for renewable equipment. The study assesses the impact of renewable energy initiatives in Nigeria, gauging investment trends, ongoing projects, and the effectiveness of policy frameworks. It also delves into the economic, social, and environmental co-benefits of renewable energy projects, emphasizing their role in job creation, investment attraction, and reduction in energy costs. Finally, the research evaluates the effectiveness of renewable energy initiatives in reducing the nation's carbon footprint and fostering environmental sustainability. It highlights progress in achieving climate change mitigation goals through increased renewable energy capacity, policy frameworks, and off-grid electrification initiatives.

A survey of environmental sustainability in Japanese dialysis facilities.

Dialysis practice has a particularly high environmental impact, including responsible for carbon emissions and climate change. Insufficient research has been conducted on environmental sustainability activities in dialysis therapy in Japan. We conducted an online Green Survey comprising 30 question items based on a previously conducted survey in Australia. Between August and September 2023, this was sent to members of the Japanese Association of Dialysis Physicians, including hospital and clinic physicians, working across 885 dialysis facilities in Japan. In total, 255 (29%) facilities responded to the survey. More than half of the facilities (n = 157; 61.6%) responded that they did not have a strategy, policy, or action plan for environmental sustainability. In four-fifths of the facilities (n = 208; 81.6%), no "green team" or committee had been formed to promote environmental protection. By contrast, most of the surveyed facilities had emergency strategies for natural disasters, such as covering for patient visits and staff commuting during extreme weather conditions (n = 169; 66.3%), water shortages (n = 159; 62.4%), and power outages (n = 188; 73.7%). Following the UK, Australia and New Zealand, and Portugal, this is the fourth Green Survey to be conducted, and the first on environmental sustainability among kidney health-care providers in Japan. The results indicated that daily activities for environmental protection are still lacking at many facilities, even though the management of dialysis treatment during a natural disaster is well conducted.

Water Demand and Availability in the Tarutung District, North Tapanuli Regency, Indonesia

This comprehensive study addresses the intricate dynamics of population growth, water demand, and availability in the Tarutung District. Employing a geometric approach, we projected the population growth from 2018 to 2032, estimating a 0.74% annual increase. Subsequently, a meticulous water demand analysis encompassed domestic sectors, including household connections and public hydrants, and non-domestic sectors such as educational, religious, market, health, and commercial facilities. The calculated total water demand, encompassing both domestic and non-domestic needs, reached 6,034,026.38 liters per hour and 123,552,000 liters per hour, respectively. In parallel, we investigated the water availability through an examination of spring sources and rainfall data, revealing a substantial surplus. As of now, Tarutung District boasts a surplus water availability of 183,326,289.18 cubic meters per year. In conclusion, the findings indicate that, under current conditions, the Tarutung District is well-equipped to manage its water resources until 2032. However, the study underscores the importance of implementing sustainable environmental policies to safeguard water sources and optimize resource management. The proposed recommendations advocate for local government interventions, community awareness initiatives, water use efficiency enhancements, infrastructure improvements, and stringent forest area management. This research contributes valuable insights to water resource management, emphasizing the need for proactive measures to sustain the water abundance in the Tarutung District. The conclusions drawn and recommendations presented serve as a foundation for informed decision-making, aligning with the broader goals of environmental sustainability and community resilience.

Integrating Multiscale Geospatial Analysis for Monitoring Crop Growth, Nutrient Distribution, and Hydrological Dynamics in Large-Scale Agricultural Systems

Monitoring crop growth, soil conditions, and hydrological dynamics are imperative for sustainable agriculture and reduced environmental impacts. This interdisciplinary study integrates remote sensing, digital soil mapping, and hydrological data to elucidate intricate connections between these factors in the state of Ohio, USA. Advanced spatiotemporal analysis techniques were applied to key datasets, including the MODIS sensor satellite imagery, USDA crop data, soil datasets, Aster GDEM, and USGS stream gauge measurements. Vegetation indices derived from MODIS characterized crop-specific phenology and productivity patterns. Exploratory spatial data analysis show relationships of vegetation dynamics and soil properties, uncovering links between plant vigor, edaphic fertility, and nutrient distributions. Correlation analysis quantified these relationships and their seasonal evolution. Examination of stream gauge data revealed insights into spatiotemporal relationships of nutrient pollution and stream discharge. By synthesizing diverse geospatial data through cutting-edge data analytics, this work illuminated complex interactions between crop health, soil nutrients, and water quality in Ohio. The methodology and findings provide actionable perspectives to inform sustainable agricultural management and environmental policy. This study demonstrates the significant potential of open geospatial resources when integrated using a robust spatiotemporal framework. Integrating additional measurements and high-resolution data sources through advanced analytics and interactive visualizations could strengthen these insights.

Stakeholders’ role towards circular economy implementation: a scientometric review

Purpose This study aims to identify in literature the role of construction stakeholders in the implementation of circular economy (CE) in the construction industry (CI). This study also sought to identify the status quo and research trend, “hot themes”, areas requiring more research and future research direction of stakeholders’ role in CE implementation in the CI. Design/methodology/approach A literature search was conducted using the Scopus search engine, augmented by Google Scholar to produce 50 relevant articles for the identification of stakeholders’ roles using content analysis. The scientometric study was undertaken using VOSviewer on 42 articles obtained from Scopus search to identify the status quo, “hot themes”, knowledge gaps and future research direction of the role of stakeholders in CE implementation. Findings Through content analysis, the identified roles of government as a stakeholder are to develop efficient policy instruments, legislation support and financial investment in research and development activities that will promote the smooth implementation of CE. The role of academia/research is to engage in research aimed at investigating both the short-term behaviour and the durability of recycled materials and products. In addition, the roles of professionals in the consultant/design/procurement team are to design with life cycle assessment and reused materials, design for deconstruction and disassembly, etc. The role of the user/consumer is to ensure knowledge diffusion and awareness exchange that recognize the available opportunities for long-term material usage (including repair, reuse, refurbishment and recycling). The research status quo identified from the scientometric analysis include how stakeholders can come up with innovative ways in demolition that will ensure that more of the materials can be reused. Stakeholders should focus on enacting policies and laws that can promote the use of recycled materials in buildings, etc. Research that focuses on how to engage the various construction stakeholders to come up with specific public policy that will promote CE implementation, identifying the specific roles to be played by stakeholders during policy enactment as well as managing the environment, laws and legislations towards CE implementation. The role of stakeholders in the extension of the life span of projects, the use of strategies to minimize waste generation and standardization of building materials, components and connectors with the purpose of simplifying disassembly are the research gaps and areas for future research studies. Some of the research “hot themes” include “circular business models in the CI”, “environmental sustainability policy implementation”, “environmental, economic and social sustainability”, “policy, laws and legislations on waste management” and “environmental and industrial economics” towards CE implementation. Practical implications The findings from this study serve as a valuable reference for construction stakeholders to assess their specific roles as stakeholders and to identify the status quo and research trend, “hot themes”, areas requiring more research and future research directions on stakeholders’ roles in CE implementation in the CI. Originality/value Identifying the role of stakeholders for CE implementation is one bold step towards the achievement of CE implementation in the CI.

Sustainable development is to improve a better quality of life for current and future generations. Sustainable entrepreneurs develop products and services that are suitable for society and the environment instead of using traditional business processes and systems. Sustainable development and providing a liveable life for future generations depend on these entrepreneurs' use of innovation in their business processes and the effects of this situation on society. The aim of this study is to conceptually address the importance of international policies in sustainability entrepreneurship within the framework of the European Union's climate change and environmental sustainability policies, considering the social, environmental, and economic dimensions of sustainable development.
 Literature review methodology provides the advancement of knowledge by scoping and analysing previous research on the study. A literature review will be conducted regarding the research method, and determinations and suggestions will be presented within the framework of the purpose of the study. The data is collected from European Commission and Eurostat database.
 Entrepreneurship plays an important role in the transformation of countries towards a more sustainable future by protecting the environment and in harmonizing social, economic, and ecological goals. Climate change is one of the most important challenges of the 21st century. As climate change becomes more evident, the European Union's environmental policy has also evolved. The EU's policies on climate change and environmental sustainability create opportunities for technological development and sustainable entrepreneurship.

Quantification of water erosion using the RUSLE method in the Mazer watershed (Berrechid region, Morocco)

The losses of soil due to water erosion pose a major problem exacerbating land degradation in many regions worldwide, including Morocco. Soil degradation has detrimental consequences for agriculture, ecosystems, and the environment in general. In this context, the main objective of this study is to assess the risk of soil erosion in the Mazer watershed, located at the heart of a significant agricultural region in the Settat province of Morocco. To achieve this goal, we have employed an advanced methodology that combines the use of the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) with the advantages offered by the Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensing. This approach allows us to analyze five key factors contributing to soil losses through water erosion: rainfall erosivity (R), soil erodibility (K), vegetation cover (C), topography (LS), and anti-erosion practices (P). By overlaying these five elements, we have developed a quantitative map of soil losses for the Mazer watershed. The results show an average soil degradation of 77.2 tons per hectare per year, with variations ranging from 0.6 to 885.2 tons per hectare per year. This diversity highlights the significant impact of environmental and human factors. This precise methodology enables the identification of major contributors to erosion, facilitating the implementation of tailored protective measures. Understanding the causes of water erosion is essential for promoting sustainable agricultural practices, soil conservation, and environmental policies aimed at preserving the ecosystem and local natural resources, thereby mitigating soil erosion and promoting sustainability.

The Impact of Climate Change on Sustainable Development and International Relations in China

Global climate change has a significant negative impact on both sustainable development and the stability of international relations in the world. Global climate change affects both international relations and sustainable environmental policies to varying degrees. However, currently, most studies focus on analyzing the impact of climate change on the global environment from the perspectives of economic development and food security, and there is no discussion of the linkages between climate change, sustainable environmental policies, and international relations, so this study will analyze the sustainable development issues and international relations in terms of the impact of climate change on China by using realism theory and Liberalism theory. This study shows that climate change, environmental security planning, and international relations are interactive. A rational and valid environmental security planning mitigates the effects of climate change to a certain extent, while the implementation process of security planning contributes to the harmonious development of international relations.

Does higher energy efficiency growth homogeneously affect carbon emission growth rate across developing Sub-Saharan African nations? The importance of utilizing clean energy.

Establishing a sustainable environment and acquiring acarbon-neutral status require Sub-Saharan African nations to reduce their year-on-year growth rates of carbon emission levels. Thus, this study considers a sample of 38 countries from this region and selects the time period from 2000 to 2020 for analyzing the annual carbon emission growth rate influencing impacts of energy efficiency, clean energy, institutional quality, international trade, and net receipts of foreign direct investment. Overall, for the full sample of Sub-Saharan African nations, the results verify that the enhancing the growth rate of energy efficiency improvement reducesboth total and per capita annual carbon emission growth rates. Besides, the results endorse thatenhancing renewable energy shares of the final energy consumption profiles and promoting good governance-led betterment of institutional quality alsoplunge emission growth rates in the long run. More importantly, energy efficiency improvement, renewable energy consumption, and better quality institutions are observed to jointly exert carbon emission growth rate-impeding effects, as well. By contrast, more openness to international trade is not seen to influence the carbonemission growth ratesof the Sub-Saharan African nations of concern. Lastly, a greater share of net foreign direct investment receiptsin the national output level is evidenced to boost annual carbon emission growth rates across this region; consequently, the pollution haven hypothesis is verified. Furthermore, these above-mentioned findings are found to beheterogeneous across groups of low-income and middle-income Sub-Saharan African nations. Accordingly, in line with the findings, a couple ofpolicies are recommended to the governments of the Sub-Saharan African countries in order to guide them in designing effective environmental sustainability policies that are relevant for tackling climate change-related atrocitiesin the future.
