Accelerating the sustainability transition of brown regions: Unlocking the speed factor

Green innovations aim to improve and reduce the environmental impact of economic activities. Thus far, research focus on the positive trajectories of green transition. Continuing in this direction we focus on brown regions (i.e. specialized in fossil-fuel technologies) and the challenges that they face to become sustainable. Taking as example German Labour Market Regions we identify brown regions and measure their transition using an innovative approach based on Social Network Analysis and Knowledge Spaces. We find that the technological relatedness to green technologies, having a high life satisfaction in the region and the presence of the green party in the local government facilitate the transition. However, strong economic structures based on brown activities do not generally increase the transition speed. Our findings imply that technological and socio-economic characteristics influence the speed of transition, a dimension not yet accounted for in the sustainability transition literature.

Revolutionizing Environmental Sustainability: The Role of Renewable Energy Consumption and Environmental Technologies in OECD Countries

This study examines the relationship between economic factors and environmental sustainability in OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries from 1990 to 2022, with a particular focus on the impact of renewable energy consumption and environmental technologies on CO2 emissions. The research utilizes empirical data to establish a clear negative correlation between the adoption of renewable energy sources and the level of CO2 emissions, highlighting the effectiveness of renewable energy in reducing the environmental impact of economic activities. This finding supports the theoretical perspective that transitioning to cleaner energy sources is vital for achieving environmental sustainability and aligns with the objectives of the OECD’s environmental sustainability program. Further analysis reveals a significant negative impact of environmental technologies on CO2 emissions, underscoring the importance of technological innovation in environmental conservation efforts. The study also explores the dual influence of GDP growth, urbanization, industrialization, and trade on CO2 emissions, revealing both positive and negative effects across different stages of economic development. Initially, these factors contribute to increased emissions, but as economies mature and integrate more efficient and cleaner technologies, their impact on emissions becomes negative. These findings demonstrate the complex interplay between economic development and environmental sustainability and emphasize the need for policies that encourage renewable energy adoption, support environmental technological innovations, and guide economies towards sustainable practices. The study provides valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders, advocating for an integrated approach to ensure long-term environmental sustainability in OECD countries.

DO ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY STRINGENCY AND INNOVATION REDUCE CARBON EMISSIONS: EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE FROM G-7 COUNTRIES

Public policies have gained significant importance in technological innovations that have come to the fore in reducing the environmental impact of economic activities. Especially in developed countries, significant progress has been made in policies in this area. Reducing the negative externalities that cause environmental pollution in production and reducing their adverse effects on natural resources such as air and water is an indicator of how seriously these policies are taken. In this context, the study aims to empirically examine the effect of innovations and environmental policy strictness on the reduction of carbon emissions in G-7 countries for the period 1994-2019 using linear panel regression methods. After performing various specification and assumption tests, the Driscoll-Kraay random effects model was used to obtain coefficient estimates. In the study, the environmental policy stringency index was used to represent environmental policy strictness. The study findings indicate that an increase in environmental policy stringency reduces carbon emissions, while an increase in innovation increases carbon emissions.

Mapping green innovation with machine learning: Evidence from China

Achieving green innovation to eliminate the environmental impact of economic activities has been an important task for firms across industries. This study uses the resource-based view (RBV) and upper echelons theory (UET) to develop a green innovation determinants model and explore how firm characteristics, chief executive officer (CEO) characteristics, environmental actions, environmental disclosures, and industry characteristics influence corporate green innovation. Using a large-scale dataset of Chinese companies from 2010 to 2019 to identify the determinants of green innovation through machine learning algorithms, our results suggest that the extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) method is the best model for predicting green innovation. After that, we visualized the effects and importance of the various feature variables through the best prediction model. Our results indicate that the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) rating is the most crucial determinant for green innovation, followed by internationalization, CEO pay, firm sales, industry size, research and development (R&D) intensity, and CEO education. Overall, our findings contribute to a broader understanding of the drivers of green innovation and offer critical implications for managers and policymakers to improve sustainable development.

Emission accounting and drivers in Central Asian countries

Emerging countries are at the frontier of climate change actions, and carbon emissions accounting provides a quantifiable measure of the environmental impact of economic activities, which allows for comparisons of emissions across different entities. However, currently there is no study covering detailed emissions inventories for emerging countries in Central Asian. This paper compiles detailed and accurate carbon emissions inventories in several Central Asian countries (i.e., Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Palestine, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan) during the period 2010–2020. Using the IPCC administrative territorial approach, we for the first time compile their emissions inventories in 47 economic sectors and five energy categories. Moreover, we also investigate decoupling status based on Tapio decoupling model and examine emissions driving factors based on the index decomposition analysis method. The primary results illustrate that carbon emissions in Central Asian countries are increasing with huge differences. Decoupling results highlight that most of the sample countries still need more effort to decouple the economy and emissions except that Pakistan achieves an ideal strong decoupling state. The results of the decomposition indicate that the economy and population both raise emissions, while energy intensity and carbon intensity are negative drivers in some countries. We propose practical policy implications for decarbonization and energy transition roadmap in Central Asian countries.

Bibliometric Analysis of a Product–Service System’s Rebound Effect: Identification of a Potential Mitigation Strategy

A product–service system (PSS) is a concept concerning sustainability, as it offers the opportunity to decouple economic success from material consumption, thereby reducing the environmental impact of economic activities. However, researchers have identified significant barriers frequently impeding sustainability potential, which are called rebound effects. Unfortunately, the existing studies are insufficient, and there are few published studies on the actual avoidance of the rebound effect, which is a significant limitation for practical applications for decision-makers and policymakers. Therefore, this study aims to conduct a comprehensive bibliometric review of the relationship between the rebound effect and PSSs, including its drivers and mitigation strategies. This study incorporates multiple perspectives to map and analyze the landscape of rebound effect research in the context of PSSs and used 152 articles from a systematic literature review covering all publication years. Using the Scopus and Web of Science database, journals, citations, authors, and keywords were identified. This study identified the annual trend of research, listed the most influential articles, and uncovered six research topic clusters related to the rebound effect and PSSs. As an innovative feature of this study, it categorised the identified drivers based on their contextual dependencies to elucidate their interrelationships. This study also presents a categorisation of mitigation strategies based on the type of approach. This study is expected to support decision-makers and practitioners in developing sustainable PSS implementation strategies.

What kind of fiscal policies and natural resources efficiency promotes green economic growth? Evidence from regression analysis

The promotion of green economic development and sustainability has received increasing attention throughout the world in recent years. Regarding global emission reduction efforts, China plays a pivotal role as one of the world's biggest economies and a significant player. Using the Pooled Mean Group Autoregressive Distributed Lag (PMG-ARDL) model, analyzes how government spending and natural resource efficiency have affected green economic development in China from 1990 to 2020. We conduct a regression study to understand better how fiscal policy measures and indices of natural resource efficiency might work together to foster environmentally responsible economic development. The findings show that green economic development is significantly correlated with key interventions in fiscal policy and natural resource efficiency measures. These results light the efficacy of certain fiscal policies and resource management practices in promoting sustainable development and mitigating the environmental impact of economic activities in China.

Environmental impact of economic activities: Decoupling perspective of Singapore using log mean Divisia index decomposition technique

The chase for economic growth results in global environmental degradation, threatening the socioeconomic aspects of human lives. Singapore is a global economic player, transforming its rural setup into an urban structure to achieve higher economic growth (EG). However, the drive for EG drastically affected its environmental quality. In this respect, the present study analyzes the relationship between Singapore's economic activities and environmental quality. This study uses the Tapio decoupling indicator, Kaya Identity, and the Log Mean Divisia Index (LMDI) decomposition techniques to assess the relationships between these paramount factors from 1990 to 2016. The LMDI analysis reveals that EG and population are the main contributors to carbon emissions (CE), whereas carbon intensity reduces the environmental impact. However, energy intensity and energy structure have depicted mixed effects on CE. Further, Tapio analysis reveals that Singapore has experienced strong decoupling (SD) in most study years. Additionally, expensive negative decoupling (END), weak decoupling (WD), and strong negative decoupling (SND) were also observed during the study period. An expanded decomposition analysis reveals that population and EG deteriorate environmental quality in Singapore. While carbon intensity is the critical driver that strengthens the decoupling progress, energy intensity and structure depict a mixed effect on the decoupling process.

The role of cleaner production costs to reducing failure costs

Economic units can benefit from the cleaner production strategy, which aims to reduce the environmental impact of economic activities while improving efficiency and profitability. Accordingly, the aim of the research was to clarify the knowledge foundations of cleaner production costs and to indicate their role in reducing the costs of poor quality (the costs of failure). A set of conclusions has been reached, the most important of which is that cleaner production has achieved a reduction in the costs of external failure, represented by the costs of guarantee, by an amount of 12,339,000 dinars. Contributes to reducing the costs of failure, and based on the conclusions, a set of recommendations were presented, the most important of which is the need to focus economic units on the use of environmentally friendly materials, as they contribute to the production of products that meet the desires of customers, which leads to reducing costs, improving product quality, and reducing failure costs internally and externally.

A Two-Dimensional Adaptive GGDP-Accounting Model

The inadequacy of GDP to reflect the depletion of natural resources and the environmental impact of economic activities has raised the necessity to replace it with GGDP. This study aims to develop a comprehensive GGDP metric that incorporates diverse indicators from multiple dimensions and can adapt to changes in indicators over time. Specifically, the study develops a Two-Dimensional Adaptive GGDP-Accounting Model (2-DAG Model). The model involves selecting four aspects, namely Economic Development (ED), Environmental Cost (EC), Technological Progress (TP), and Societal Environmental Protection (SEP). Each aspect is associated with corresponding indicators. ED, EC, and TP are categorized under the Dimension-X, while SEP is placed in the Dimension-Y. The Entropy Weight Method (EWM) is utilized to allocate weights to the indicators within each aspect. The logistic equation is employed to describe the coefficient- in the dimension-x, enabling the construction of the two dimensions. By combining the two dimensions, the final Gross Green Domestic Product (GGDP) value is determined.

Toward green growth in China: The role of green finance investment, technological capital, and renewable energy consumption.

In recent times, the concept of green growth has emerged, which has a critical part to play in controlling the environmental impact of economic activities. In this analysis, we have explored three determinants of green growth: green finance investment, technological capital, and renewable energy. Moreover, this study focuses on the asymmetric impact of green finance investment, technological progress, and renewable energy on green growth in China during the period spanning from 1996 to 2020. To get the asymmetric short and long-run estimates across various quantiles, we have employed the nonlinear QARDL. The long-run estimates attached to a positive shock in green finance investment, renewable energy demand, and technological capital are positively significant at most quantiles. While, the long-run estimates attached to a negative shock in green finance investment, technological capital, and renewable energy demand are insignificant at most quantiles. In general, the findings suggest that the rise in green financial investment, technological capital, and renewable energy demand positively impacts green growth in the long run. The study offers a range of significant policy recommendations that can contribute to the advancement of sustainable green growth in China.

Intertwining innovation and business networks for sustainable agricultural systems: A case study of carbon-neutral beef

Increasing concerns about climate change and sustainability have been a major challenge for corporations and governments, translating into initiatives to help reduce the environmental impact of economic activities. Innovation networks involving several actors have promoted the adoption of sustainable practices in a deliberate and concerted manner. From a network perspective, initiatives promoted by an innovation network must be incorporated into the existing business network. This study aims to understand how and to what extent innovation and business networks are intertwined to foster sustainable practices in agricultural systems. Therefore, a study of the Carbon Neutral Beef initiative was conducted, which resulted in the development and adoption of standards that ensure carbon balance by integrating livestock and forest production systems. This study supports the notion that the viability of initiatives promoted by an innovation network depends on its overlap with the existing business network. Additionally, the intertwining process may differ in the degree to which it is controlled, thus influencing the exploration and dissemination of integrated practices involving livestock and forest production systems.

Energy Transition in Non-Euro Countries from Central and Eastern Europe: Evidence from Panel Vector Error Correction Model

The countries of Central and Eastern Europe, from the non-euro area, have completed the process of economic transition before joining the European Union. Achieving a certain level of economic development and membership in the European Union have generated their involvement in a new transition process, namely the energy transition. Concerns about promoting the low carbon economy have become increasingly complex for those countries that are interested in the environmental impact of economic activity. This study aims to analyze the process of energy transition in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe on the basis of the causality relationship among specific variables for the period 1990–2018. The study is based on cross-sectional panel data and the panel vector error correction model (PVECM). The efforts made by these countries by joining the European Union have generated economic development, with positive effects being recorded on the protection of the environment, a fact due to the strict regulations adopted and rigorous implementation at the national level. Foreign capital had a positive impact on the transition to a low carbon economy because most of the FDI flows attracted by the non-euro countries in the CEE come from Western Europe, i.e., from EU member countries, located either among the founders or among the countries that joined during the first waves of union expansion. Membership in the European Union facilitates the energy transition process for the non-euro countries of Central and Eastern Europe, but the new geopolitical events generate the reconfiguration of the European strategy of considering the need to ensure energy security.

Land Use and Land Cover in Tropical Forest: Global Research

Tropical ecosystems play an important role in the environment. They provide multiple ecosystem services, such as carbon capture and sequestration, food supply, and climate regulation. Studying land use and land cover change makes it possible to understand the land’s alterations associated with deforestation, degradation, erosion, soil desertification, and biodiversity loss. The objective of this study is to evaluate the different approaches to land use and land cover research in tropical forests based on the evolutionary and qualitative analysis of the last 44 years of scientific production. The data were collected using the Scopus database and was based on the PRISMA methodology’s four phases: (i) identification, (ii) screening, (iii) eligibility, and (iv) included. The results showed a significant increase in the study of land use and land cover consolidated in 4557 articles, with contributions from 74 countries, revealing 14 themes and seven lines of research. Core research areas such as biodiversity, land use, and conservation exist due to the ongoing interest in the value of tropical forests and their response to climate change. The present research allowed us to consider future study topics such as the relationship between sustainable development goals and land use and cover in tropical forests, as well as the evaluation of the environmental impact of economic activities in forests.

Anti-Aging Potential of a Rosa centifolia Stem Extract with Focus on Phytochemical Composition by Bioguided Fractionation.

Agricultural practices generate huge amounts of by-products, often simply discarded as waste that must be processed at some cost. The natural by-products revalorisation as raw material to produce high-added value ingredients for various industrial sectors may pave the way towards more sustainable industrial practices, via an optimised utilisation of natural resources. Integrating the circular economy precepts to production systems is considered to be a more and more promising management solution to significantly reduce the environmental impact of economic activities. This article discusses the valorisation of Rosa centifolia stem to produce a natural extract with cosmetic anti-aging potential. To do so, the cosmetic potential of 30 extracts obtained by maceration of agricultural by-products in a hydroalcoholic solvent was evaluated: their activities, as well as their inhibitory activities of specific enzymes were assessed in vitro to identify those that could be used effectively as anti-ageing actives while meeting the consumer's expectations in terms of sustainability, naturality, transparency and traceability.[1] A hydroalcoholic extract of R. centifolia stem revealed itself particularly promising due to its valuable anti-hyaluronidase and antioxidant activities, and its interesting anti-elastase and anti-inflammatory potential. The bio-guided fractionation of this extract allows the characterisation of three major compounds, e. g., isoquercitrin, quercitrin and euscaphic acid, never identified in R. centifolia previously.

This study aims to identify and analyze the legal conception as a means of development as well as to analyze the nature of the relationship between the economy, law and the environment contained in the Job Creation Law. This study uses normative legal research with a statutory and conceptual approach. The results of the study conclude, first, that development efforts carried out by the government should focus on the doctrine of sustainable development which is supported by an understanding of development law which will later become the government's insight in realizing sustainable economic growth. Second, the Job Creation Law, which is expected to be able to answer the problems of the times, does not work as desired because the development approach used prioritizes economic interests without paying attention to the environmental impact of economic activities.

Examining Primary Education Students’ Expertise Concerning the Environmental Impact of Economic Activities and Environmental Catastrophes

This study is concerned with the knowledge on mining, industrial and other economic activities, as well as different environmental disasters affecting the region of Hungary. Students majoring in primary school teaching participated in the research. Through questionnaires, I examined the hypothesized importance of teaching children about the environmental impact of economic activities and environmental disasters in their geography lessons, and I analyzed the results via Fisher and McNemar tests in SPSS. Based on these data we can conclude that there is no correlation between primary education students’ previously gained knowledge concerning the detrimental environmental effects of economic activities, and their current motivation in discussing such topics in geography lessons. The conclusion remains valid for environmental disasters as well.

Family Ownership and Corporate Environmental Responsibility: The Contingent Effect of Venture Capital and Institutional Environment

As scholars and policy makers pay more attention to the environmental impact of economic activities, more focus has been placed on the corporate environmental responsibility (CER) of family firms, which accounts for the majority of businesses in both developed and developing countries. Using a sample of 4714 private enterprises across 23 provinces in China, the current study examines the effect of family ownership on CER investment, as well as the moderating effects of venture capital investment and local institutional development. Results show that concentrated family ownership leads to lower CER spending, however, when venture capital investment comes from developed markets, the negative relationship is reversed. In addition, the marketization level of the province in which a family firm is headquartered mitigates the negative relationship between family ownership and CER investment.

The development of a system of «green» skills in the strategizing of labor resources of industrial enterprises

Strategizing of labor resources is an essential element in the development and implementation of industrial enterprise strategies. The aim of the article is in accordance with V.L. Kvint determine global trends in the development of green skills of labor resources necessary for the competitive functioning of industrial enterprises in modern and future conditions. Green jobs play a crucial role in reducing the environmental impact of economic activities. This reduction is gradual, and various jobs contribute to this to varying degrees. The organization of green spaces at industrial enterprises, which have a greater impact on the environmental situation and are primarily affected by global trends in greening the economy, is of paramount importance. The main element of the concept of a strategy for the development of labor resources in a green economy is the organization of a system for the formation of necessary skills among employees. These are not only the skills of direct production of clean products, but also the formation of specific thinking about the strategic importance of these products, the rejection of environmentally dirty production, the development of the need for goods and services created in the green economy. The article presents the forecasts of the International Labor Organization until 2030 of a change in the need for professions, professional fields and related skills of subordinates and managers. Lists of skills deemed necessary for developing a green economy in the UK and Republic of Korea are also shown.

Environmental protection as a factor of agricultural development in the Republic of Serbia

Public concern about the environmental impact of economic activities has significantly increased around the globe in recent years. Within the scope of unlawful acts, environmental delicts are among the most serious ones in terms of environmental impact, the consequences of which directly affect the quality and development of agriculture as the main branch of economic activity. The issue of environmental protection and liability can be approached from different perspectives, and the focus of the present research will be on the analysis of environmental delicts committed by legal entities, taking into consideration the importance and role of these entities in agriculture. In addition to general assumptions on legal regulation of the liability of legal entities, the authors also presented the results of research on legal entities reported, charged, and convicted for environmental delicts in the Republic of Serbia in the period from 2010 to 2017, with a special emphasis on the analysis of results obtained in the abovementioned research areas for the territory of AP Vojvodina.
