Standards structure for a data processing department

Standards are reputed to solve a great number of problems within a data processing organization. In truth, standards alone solve very few problems. This paper presents this dilemma in terms of the practical objectives and consequences of local standards development. Rather than promote a particular standards set, general appropriateness is discussed in terms of a supportive standards structure. The model for standards development which is utilized is the Standards Manual used at Indiana University for administrative data processing. The experience of its development illustrates the conditions underlying a proper standards structure:• the need for and applicability of local standards• the organization of a Standards Manual• the organization of a department standards committee• the procedures for standards evaluation and maintenance• the procedures for standards enforcementStandards are no simple nostrum used to remedy basic ills in the computer installation. However, the structure presented in this paper is one important aspect of a greatly needed determination to manage the data processing environment in a consistent manner.

Spatial and Temporal Distribution of Sound Pressure Levels in Data Processing Installations

The sound field in a data processing installation depends upon the locations of the sound sources, the sound power radiated by the sources, the acoustical properties of the room (including its total absorption area, volume, and shape), and the background noise levels in the room due to external sources. Spatial and temporal variations in the sound field are observed in typical installations. The relative importance of the individual factors affecting the sound field is assessed. The results of this study show that a scale factor may be used to predict the SPLs in an installation from SPL data obtained on individual machines in a semi-anechoic room. Hence, semi-anechoic room data are useful for predicting installation noise levels and for guiding the design of a particular data processing environment, as well as serving as a measure of source emission during the design and development of a new data processing machine.

Grumman PRAESEE Program

In mid‐March twenty‐one former aerospace engineers will have completed a retraining program in environmental engineering at Grumman Aerospace facilities in Bethpage, New York. This Program for Retraining Engineers and Scientists in Environmental Engineering (PRAESEE), which focuses on water quality as a specific, critical issue in the environment, is a six‐month period of intensive study of environmental chemistry; environmental microbiology; hydrology modeling and hydraulics design; analytical instrumentation; computer‐based environmental data processing; water supply and waste water treatment systems design, and unit operations and processes.

Management information retrieval

Computer systems are well-known hoarders of valuable information. The retrieval problem is discussed under the twin headings of Management and Technical Information Retrieval. A General Analysis System is described which has been designed to meet the requirements for management information retrieval in a commercial/industrial data-processing environment.

Standards for control and operations

When we talk about standards in a data processing environment, I think too many of us feel the same way as the young lady who went to a psychiatrist for counseling. He asked her to describe her problem and she related the following-"Doctor, my problem is that I am 24 years old, have been married three times, and am still a virgin. When I was 18 years old, I married a man 75 and while he was willing, there wasn't a way and after about three months he died of a heart attack. About a year later, I met an airline pilot and within three months, we were married. However, on our way from the wedding to start on our honeymoon, we were involved in an automobile accident. He was seriously injured and after two days died. Last year, I met a man who is manager of standards in data processing. We were married three months ago and all he does each night is sit on the edge of the bed and tell me how good it is going to be!"
