Evaluation of the natural suitability of human settlements environment in Jilin Province based on RS and GIS

Taking Jilin Province as the study area,this paper analyzed four natural living environment factors of terrain conditions,land cover conditions,climate conditions and hydrological conditions using models such as relief degree of land surface,vegetation cover index,comfort index( also called temperature and humidity index),and water resource index by GIS and RS technology. Then the weighted models of Human Environment Index were established to evaluate the natural suitability of human settlements of 43 counties in Jilin Province with an analysis of the grading evaluation. The authors made suggestions concerning the migration and improvement of residential environment in Jilin Province. The results show that the natural human environment suitability presents an obvious spatial differentiation pattern,the dry areas of western Jilin Province and Korean Autonomous County of Changbai in southeast Jilin Province belong to the unsuitable area; the central and western counties belong to the critical suitable area,which accounts for more than half of the whole province; the central and eastern counties belong to the generally suitable area; and Ji'an City belongs to the moderately suitable area.

Geological Environment Suitability Evaluation and Function Regionalization in Zhongyuan Urban Agglomeration

In order to make rational use of geological resources; reduce the occurrence probability of geological hazards and environmental geological problems effectively; accomplish the coordination between functional layout and geological environment, this paper uses analytic hierarchy process (AHP) based on triangular fuzzy number to decide weight and sensitive factor evaluation model to evaluate the geological environment suitability in Zhongyuan Urban Agglomeration. Geological environment function regionalization is completed based on the evaluation results before under MAPGIS platform. Study result shows that geological environment functional region for basic construction land is mainly distributed in the regional city center within a certain radiant scope. The functional region for agricultural production land is mainly distributed in central hill region and eastern plain region of the research area. The functional region for environmental protection land is mainly distributed in northern and southwestern mountain region of the research area, as well as zones along the Yellow River and Middle Route in the South-to-North Water Transfer Project.

Combining AHP with GIS in synthetic evaluation of environmental suitability for living in China's 35 major cities

There are nearly 700 cities in China, each with their own particular characteristics of natural environment quality and rates of economic development. When people are able to choose a city to live in, they will take into account these characteristics in order to improve their lifestyles. Based on geographic information system technology and the analytic hierarchy process method, a model of the living environment suitability index (LESI) for the larger cities of China was designed. The LESI was constructed by using the factors of economic condition, convenience and livable degree, natural environment and natural resources. The LESI model was then applied to compare the living conditions in 35 major cities in China in 2007, including 30 provincial capitals and 5 sub-provincial cities. LESI values were higher for cities in southeast China than for cities in the northwest. The highest LESI values were mainly distributed along the Chinese southeast coast and the Yangtze River Delta. Cities with the lowest LESI values were found in the centre and north of China. Of the 35 cities, 4 had highly suitable living environments and 7 had unsuitable living environments.

GIS-based coastal area suitability assessment of geo-environmental factors in Laoshan district, Qingdao

Abstract. With increasing urbanization, particularly in the coastal regions of developing countries, the development of disaster management schemes is needed as the losses from a single event can destroy decades of development and threaten local populations, buildings and infrastructure. Geo-environmental suitability is often evaluated systematically in order to assess the nature of hazards and their potential damage to human life, land, buildings and other property. A suitability assessment will indicate the priorities for geological and environmental hazard management. This paper presents a geological environment suitability assessment that aims to identify grading in a current seaside urban development and develop practices to aid in the identification of hidden geological and environmental hazards. The Laoshan area in the city of Qingdao was used as a case study because it constitutes a good example of a developing city with geological and environmental threats. Also, urban plans have been drawn up here with insufficient or absent information on losses from potential natural hazards.

Evaluation on the human settlements environment suitability in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area of Chongqing based on RS and GIS

To explore geographical differences in quantitative characteristics and spatial pattern of human settlements environmental suitability (HSES) in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area (TGRA), terrain, climate, hydrology, vegetation and other natural factors were selected to build the livable environmental evaluation, and the quantitative analysis was conducted through Remote Sensing(RS) and Geographic Informational System (GIS) to reveal geographical characteristics and spatial patterns of HSES. The results are obtained as follows: (1) inhabitants of the TGRA of Chongqing are concentrated in the area with moderate high HSES, which is 78% of the total population distributed in 48% of the study area; (2) the HSES is closely related to the terrain, and it forms an arc-banded spatial succession pattern: relatively low in the northeast and the southeast while comparatively high in the west and the south; (3) large numbers of people are distributed in the area with low suitability (with higher population density than the average of the western China), but economic development level in these areas is quite low. Moreover, these areas are ecological sensitive and fragile, many kinds of eco-environmental problems have been caused by human activities. Therefore, population migration and layout are reasonable options for the development of these areas.

A Multivariate Clustering Approach for Characterization of the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Colline Teramane Area

A multivariate clustering approach combined with geomatics was applied to delineate and define homogeneous zones (terroir units) within the premium Denomination of Guaranteed Origin Colline Teramane winegrowing area, in the Teramo Province, Italy. A geographical information system (GIS) architecture was set up to incorporate the main factors affecting the geographical differentiation of land capability. Vine-related environmental indices and parameters were interpolated and incorporated in the GIS. A principal component analysis followed by a multivariate clustering algorithm was applied to obtain a continuous topography climate map, in which each cluster represented a homogeneous zone or terroir unit. Terroir units were further characterized by overlaying the topography climate map with land-use information and a geologic map of the same area. This territory classification provides a useful framework for further hypotheses testing, in particular vine interaction with environment and new cultivar suitability. Moreover, the approach represents a potential tool for rational territory management and land-use planning.

Natural Environment Suitability of China and Its Relationship with Population Distributions

The natural environment factor is one of the main indexes for evaluating human habitats, sustained economic growth and ecological health status. Based on Geographic Information System (GIS) technology and an analytic hierarchy process method, this article presents the construction of the Natural Environment Suitability Index (NESI) model of China by using natural environment data including climate, hydrology, surface configuration and ecological conditions. The NESI value is calculated in grids of 1 km by 1 km through ArcGIS. The spatial regularity of NESI is analyzed according to its spatial distribution and proportional structure. The relationship of NESI with population distribution and economic growth is also discussed by analyzing NESI results with population distribution data and GDP data in 1 km by 1 km grids. The study shows that: (1) the value of NESI is higher in the East and lower in the West in China; The best natural environment area is the Yangtze River Delta region and the worst are the northwest of Tibet and southwest of Xinjiang. (2) There is a close correlation among natural environment, population distribution and economic growth; the best natural environment area, the Yangtze River Delta region, is also the region with higher population density and richer economy. The worst natural environment areas, Northwest and Tibetan Plateau, are also regions with lower population density and poorer economies.

Natural environment suitability for human settlements in China based on GIS

With the degeneration of environment and acceleration of urbanization, human environment has attracted great attention worldwide. This paper sets up the Human Settlements Environment Index (HEI) model and evaluates the natural environment suitability for Human Settlements in China based on GIS technology. The results show that the HEI of China decreases from southeast to northwest in general, HEI is significantly correlated with population density at grid size and the correlation coefficient (r) between them reaches 0.93, which indicates that natural environment suitability for Human Settlements has a significant influence on population distribution. Most people in China mainly concentrate in areas with high natural environment suitability. The total suitable area is 430.47×104 km2, which accounts for nearly 45% of the total land area in China, while the proportion of people living in the area reaches 96.56%. With a population density of 18 people per square kilometer, the critical area is the transitional region for people to live in China. The critical area covers 225.11×104 km2 with a population of 41.12 million. The non-suitable area covers 304.42×104 km2 with a population of only 2.49 million.

This article investigates water seepage prevention method, chooses and compares different sealants, as well as surface treatment, structures to improve adhesion performance, heat resistance, environment suitability, ageing resistance.

Benefits Sought and Realized by Active Mountain Sport Tourists in Epirus, Greece: Pre- and Post-Trip Analysis

As more peripheral destinations use tourism as an economic development tool, it is becoming increasingly important to develop a deeper understanding of tourists' perceptions and experiences of these places as one component of strategies to ensure the long-term sustainability of these locations. This study used a pre- and post-trip design to explore the benefits sought and satisfied and the destination images of mountain sport tourists visiting a peripheral Greek location, Epirus-Hellas. Active mountain sport tourists (N = 119) were surveyed twice using two self-administered questionnaires containing similar scales (wording change slightly to reflect pre- and post-trip meanings). Frequencies, factor analysis, and paired t-tests were employed. Five benefits sought/realized dimensions (socializing, sport experience, excitement, enrichment and relaxation) and three image dimensions (attractions, environment, and outdoor activity suitability) were identified. The pre- and post-trip analyses largely revealed congruity between pre-trip expectations and post-trip satisfactions. For a destination such as Epirus, this means the needs and expectations of active mountain sport tourists are generally met. The management and policy implications of these findings are discussed within a sustainability framework.

Bird communities as bioindicators: The focal species concept in agricultural landscapes

Abstract The use of bioindicators as a tool in conservation and landscape ecology projects is becoming more widespread. We suggest objective criteria for selecting suitable focal species to identify important semi-natural elements in agricultural landscapes and provide quality indications at two different spatial scales. At a broad scale, focal species can indicate overall landscape quality, and species abundance data allow an environment suitability map to be drawn. At a local scale, focal species abundances can be related to structural characteristics of landscape elements, thus, providing valuable indications of the most effective locations for restoration projects.
