ABSTRACTIn this paper, a shorted planar elliptical metal antenna (SPEMA) is designed for ultra-wideband (UWB) applications. The shorting strip yields almost 20% size reduction and the impedance bandwidth for S11 < −10 dB of the SPEMA covers the entire UWB (3.1–10.6 GHz). The surface current distribution of the proposed antenna is observed. Two symmetrical antennas are placed very closely for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) applications. The proposed MIMO antenna exhibits low reflection coefficient (< −10 dB), low mutual coupling (< −13 dB), and low correlation coefficient (<0.02) in UWB range. The absolute peak gain and radiation patterns in E and H plane of the MIMO antenna are presented. Measured results are in good agreement with the simulated results.
