Machine learning and internet of things applications in enterprise architectures: Solutions, challenges, and open issues

SummaryThe rapid growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) has led to its widespread adoption in various industries, enabling enhanced productivity and efficient services. Integrating IoT systems with existing enterprise application systems has become common practice. However, this integration necessitates reevaluating and reworking current Enterprise Architecture (EA) models and Expert Systems (ES) to accommodate IoT and cloud technologies. Enterprises must adopt a multifaceted view and automate various aspects, including operations, data management, and technology infrastructure. Machine Learning (ML) is a powerful IoT and smart automation tool within EA. Despite its potential, a need for dedicated work focuses on ML applications for IoT services and systems. With IoT being a significant field, analyzing IoT‐generated data and IoT‐based networks is crucial. Many studies have explored how ML can solve specific IoT‐related challenges. These mutually reinforcing technologies allow IoT applications to leverage sensor data for ML model improvement, leading to enhanced IoT operations and practices. Furthermore, ML techniques empower IoT systems with knowledge and enable suspicious activity detection in smart systems and objects. This survey paper conducts a comprehensive study on the role of ML in IoT applications, particularly in the domains of automation and security. It provides an in‐depth analysis of the state‐of‐the‐art ML approaches within the context of IoT, highlighting their contributions, challenges, and potential applications.

Causal Knowledge Modelling for Agile Development of Enterprise Application Systems

Experience shows that Agile project management tools such as Atlassian Jira capture the state of EAS projects by relying solely on expert judgement that is not supported by any knowledge model. Therefore, the assessment of project content against strategic objectives and business domain features are not supported by any tool. This is one of the reasons why Agile project management still does not provide sufficient EAS project delivery results. In order to address this problem, the Enterprise Application Software (EAS) development using Agile project management is summarized in a conceptual model. The model highlights the knowledge used and indicates its nature (empirical or causal digitized). The modified Agile management process we have developed and described in previous works is based on causal knowledge models that supports EAS development and Agile management processes. The purpose of this article is to specify knowledge repository to ensure the Agile management solutions of an EAS project are aligned with strategic goals and business domain causality. It is worth noticing that strategic goals have been identified and specified as capabilities using some enterprise architecture framework (NAF, MODAF, ArchiMate, etc.). The novelty of the proposed method is incorporating the business domain causal knowledge modelling approach into the Agile project management process. The causal knowledge unit is considered as a Management Transaction (MT), which includes closed loop dependence of its components. The modified Agile activity hierarchy (theme, initiative, epic, user story) defines the required content of their mutual interactions. An important new results obtained are the conceptual model of causal knowledge base (KB) and specification of enhanced Agile management tool components: project management database and project state assesment knowledge base. Causal KB includes specification of causal knowledge unit (MT metamodel) and specifications of traditional and causal Agile hierarchy meta-models. These conceptual models define the causal knowledge components necessary to evaluate the state of Agile activities in the EAS development project using intelligent Agile project management tool.

SOA-based Information Integration Platform for Educational Management Decision Support System

The resource management platform based on the resource library has different structures, which brings a lot of inconvenience to the sharing of educational resources. However, the scale of the school is constantly expanding, the number of campuses and departments within the school increases, and the number of teachers and students increases. These new circumstances need the development of an open, secure, and effective school administration system that can operate online at any time and from any location. The “plan norm model” of educational management decision-making goals controls the decision-making dynamic structure. Whether the decision-making object is an “economic man” or a “social man,” its dynamic structure is built on a top-down control sequence, with the only variation being the control mechanisms used. In colleges and universities, educational administration management is an essential aspect of educational management. It is a work with strong timeliness, heavy workload, and high accuracy requirements, affecting the overall situation of teaching. This paper proposes an information integration platform based on SOA, which integrates various enterprise application systems into a unified platform by using a loose coupling structure, realizes information sharing among application systems, and meets the needs of cross-departmental enterprise business. As a new architecture idea, service-oriented architecture can package existing assets and reuse existing assets. It can also minimize the impact of demand changes because its implementation is loosely coupled. When users need to add or modify a function, they only need to make a few modifications in the presentation layer or business process layer.

Design of distributed timing task scheduling system for smart grid

With the rapid development of information technology and the growing scale of enterprise development, more and more enterprise application systems appear due to business scenarios, requiring the system to execute the specified business operations at the planned time, which is the demand of “timed tasks”. The rapid growth of business volume makes the number of timed tasks also increase massively, and the importance of timed task application scenarios requires more and more strict guarantee of reliable triggering of tasks. In this paper, to address these problems, we design and implement a distributed system providing timed task scheduling service based on Quartz, an open source lightweight job scheduling framework, and realize business modules such as timed task control service, trigger execution, lock grabbing trigger, unified configuration management, task load balancing and log management. The system has been tested and put into operation, and has completed the requirements well and achieved the design goals.

A cloud-based monitoring system for performance analysis in IoT industry

As enterprise information systems grow in scale and computing resources remain limited, some computing system services run into occasional abnormalities such as degraded stability and the failure to respond in time. Fewer monitoring tools mean that system maintenance managers may not be notified when abnormal events occur. It becomes difficult to diagnose and manage the problems promptly, to decrease service interruptions and to fully grasp how computing resources are being utilized. Monitor systems that provide enterprise-wide services must perform better if they are to meet the needs of customers. Therefore, it is necessary for the system administrator to monitor the system. In this case study, we propose and develop a cloud-based monitor system that uses Java to run on the J2EE platform. We build a cloud-based performance analysis and monitoring mechanism whose system architecture has three components: a server resource performance monitor, an enterprise application systems monitor and an abnormal event notification system. The performance analysis and monitoring mechanisms are integrated and include an active diagnosis system and maintenance module to issue notifications when any system experiences abnormal operations. This results in an increase in enterprise system availability and effectively lowers the frequency of abnormal operations. System resource usage reports compiled from the data enable the optimal allocation of the enterprise’s limited computing resources. This monitoring system ensures high quality and lowers the operational cost of providing information services, enhancing the provider–customer relationship.

Study on an Information System Integration Scheme of Enterprises Based on RFID Technology with SOA

Radio frequency identification(RFID) is high technology, which can rapidly and real-timely acquisition information and accurately deal with information. And it has broad application prospects in retail, logistics, transport and other fields. Service oriented architecture(SOA) is a service-oriented architecture, which is used to design and realize the loose coupling software. For the existing shortcomings of current enterprise information system integration, the RFID technology and SOA are introduced into system integration in order to propose a new enterprise information system integration scheme in this paper. In the proposed system integration scheme, the middleware uses the business documents as the carrier of data exchange among other enterprise application systems, and the data stream technology is used to filter and package RFID data. The rule parsing technology is used to control the business processes. The SOA is used to realize the loose coupling and integration of RFID data event and application system, and deal with the configuration of the components. At the same time, .NET Remoting technology is used to realize the distribution architecture of middleware in order to ensure the deployment flexibility of middleware. The applied cases of a demonstrative application system, blood management and traceability system are used to illustrate its feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed integration scheme. The enterprise information system integration scheme provides an effective solution for system integration between different enterprises or internal enterprises. It can solve the compatibility between different application systems, and takes on the higher service efficiency, less CPU average occupation and better average response time. This study provides a stable and effective solution for information sharing between enterprises, improves the work efficiency and reduces the whole work management capital, and continuously improves the informatization level of the enterprises.

CSA-WSC: cuckoo search algorithm for web service composition in cloud environments

In recent years, service-based applications are deemed to be one of the new solutions to build an enterprise application system. In order to answer the most demanding needs or adaptations to the needs of changed services quickly, service composition is currently used to exploit the multi-service capabilities in the Information Technology organizations. While web services, which have been independently developed, may not always be compatible with each other, the selection of optimal services and composition of these services are seen as a challenging issue. In this paper, we present cuckoo search algorithm for web service composition problem which is called ‘CSA-WSC’ that provides web service composition to improve the quality of service (QoS) in the distributed cloud environment. The experimental results indicate that the CSA-WSC compared to genetic search skyline network (GS-S-Net) and genetic particle swarm optimization algorithm (GAPSO-WSC) reduces the costs by 7% and responding time by 6%, as two major reasons for the reduction of improvement of the quality of service. It also increases provider availability up to 7.25% and the reliability to 5.5%, as the two important QoS criteria for improving the quality of service.

An analysis of the factors affecting the adoption of cloud consumer relationship management in the machinery industry in Taiwan

In recent years, cloud computing services have developed rapidly and are being widely used, but most applications focus on consumers. However, a few successful cases of enterprise application systems have been constructed and adopted by companies. To understand the factors that affect the adoption by a company of cloud Customer Relationship Management (CRM), which is an enterprise application system, this study used a Technology Organization Environment Framework (TOE) as a theoretical framework, reviewed related literature on the relevant factors affecting the adoption of a cloud service, and then constructed a three-level hierarchical table of the factors. A pairwise comparison questionnaire was then designed and issued to top managers of firms in the machinery industry in Taiwan that have adopted cloud CRM. A fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (FAHP) was then used to calculate the weights of the factors, based on the returned questionnaires. The results show that enterprises in the machinery industry gave priority to the factor, ‘support of senior managers’, followed by the factors ‘organizational policies’ and ‘system information security’. Some implications of the findings are discussed, which can serve as a guide for the successful adoption of cloud CRM in machinery industry if firms allocate their resources appropriately to these important factors. These results can also be used by the service providers of cloud CRM to devise effective marketing strategies.

Researches on JVMTI-Based Security Enhancement Techniques for Java Software

With the fast development of information technology, various software systems have been widely applied to production lines and office work. A lot of corporate data thus are stored and processed by these systems each day. Therefore, the security of the software systems is closely related to the data security and the core competitiveness of an enterprise. At present, Java becomes one of the most important programming languages of the enterprise application systems. Against its hidden risks that Trojans and Backdoors are easily implanted through decompilation, the author of this paper proposes a security enhancement technique based on JVMTI for Java software to effectively prevent the malicious users’ decompilation through encrypting the bytecode files, thereby enhancing the security of the software.

Internet of Things (IoT) seamlessly integrates the user domain, cyberspace and physical space domains, and realizes the dynamic human-machine-thing collaborations. In general, IoT applications often comprise the interactions of human activities, software services and physical entities spanning multiple service domains or organizations. An IoT application system often involves the aggregation of several distributed enterprise application systems. It builds a larger, composite system to collaboratively achieve a specific business goal. Most previous work only focuses on the interconnection and interoperability problems among different entities and enterprise application systems in a dynamic interaction environment. However, the problems of how to efficiently disseminate the sensing information among the information providers and consumers on-demand and how to dynamically coordinate the relevant enterprise services or business processes based on the occurred events from the real world still have not been comprehensively explored. To resolve these problems, we propose an EDSOAbased (Event-driven Service-oriented Architecture) IoT service provisioning approach which well integrates the advantages of EDA (Event-driven Architecture) and SOA (Service-oriented Architecture) in this paper. The combination of SOA and EDA can easily support the on-demand dissemination of sensing information and realize the event-driven dynamic service coordination cross domain. This proposed approach enhances the flexibility and responsiveness of IoT service systems, which allows these systems to respond dynamically, in real time, as events occur. Finally, we demonstrate its practicability by a deployed District Heating Control and Information Service System (DHCISS) application.

An Effective Approach for Fine-Grained RBAC Model Based on AOP

we propose an effective approach for fine-grained RBAC model by using AOP. The proposed approach can effectively accomplish the general role-based access control functions among enterprise application systems. This approach focuses on the fine-grained access control and is implemented by using interceptor technique of Java Struts2. We also present the related architecture and applied system (Project Management Platform of DUT Infrastructure Construction) for a verification of this proposed approach.

Design for Refrigerator Assembly

In refrigerator industry, takt time becomes shorter with the growth of refrigerator production, product configurations become more diverse with the increase of customizing requirements, traditional data acquisition methods and manufacturing resource identification methods cannot meet the need of manufacturing execution system (MES) in job shop scheduling, work in process (WIP) tracking, rapid response of process control and so on. As an automatic identification technology, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) can be applied to bridge the gap between physical flow of product/part and information flow in enterprise application system due to its characteristics such as automatic identification, long-distance reading, and non-line-of sight. Based on this characteristic, this paper design a real-time MES (RT-MES) for refrigerator production and successfully implements this system based on the actual situation of JAC.

Routines in enterprise application systems

PurposeThe concept of “routines” is used to classify diverse enterprise application systems (EAS) into a framework. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the theoretical underpinnings and EAS falling into each of the framework quadrants. The framework provides a guideline for firms to meet their EAS‐organizational alignment challenges.Design/methodology/approachThe EAS‐organizational alignment framework in this paper is developed through a synthesis of literature. The framework links EAS and organizational routines according to intra‐ and inter‐levels of organizational analysis and inflexible and flexible governance mechanisms.FindingsThe findings suggest that a fit between EAS routines and organizational routines leads to successful EAS deployments and hence improved business performance.Research limitations/implicationsThe findings provide researchers with reasons to incorporate routines into existing research models to better explain EAS‐organizational alignment. The next step is to empirically validate the EAS‐organizational alignment framework.Practical implicationsFirms can gain an understanding of how EAS routines and organizational routines can be manipulated to positively influence EAS‐organizational alignment and hence increase business performance. Firms can use routines as strategic tools for adoption and successful deployment of EAS across their global operations.Originality/valueThe paper's findings provide a perspective, different from past research, on our understanding of EAS‐organizational alignment and offer valuable guidance for future research in this area.

A web services-based approach to develop a networked information integration service platform for gear enterprise

In order to deal with the problems of information integration and data sharing across distributed heterogeneous application systems in gear enterprises, it is imperative to build up a high quality information integration platform. Web Services, an emerging form of service-oriented architecture (SOA) for distributed computing, have the potential to serve as a key enabling technology to integrate heterogeneous systems under the distributed environment. This paper presents a novel information integration service platform which offers better support for the networked manufacturing of gear enterprise by taking full advantage of technologies of SOA and Web services. In this paper, the information integrated operation mode of gear enterprise networked manufacturing is deeply analyzed and the functional architecture of the networked information integration service platform is proposed. Furthermore, the application integrated framework of gear enterprise is constructed and the software architecture of the service platform is implemented in the .NET environment. Finally, an actual application example of hypoid gear networked manufacturing is provided to demonstrate the practicability of the proposed platform.

They will significantly change the way of doing business, but in a good and profitable way. The new enterprise application systems will have to be more customer-focused, incorporating e-commerce interaction and collaboration with business partners.Outsourcing of operations is the next emerging trend as a company can typically save operational costs close to 50%. With the improvement in connectivity, the option of ERP as a service using the SaaS (Software as a Service) model is now proving to be viable. The paper gives a picture of the business applications that suit the SMEs, the technological challenges they have to reach, and the applications implementation options and it discusses the particularities in the Romanian SMEs.

Study on Integration of CAx/PDM Based on Web Services

Using the advantages of integration technique based on Web Services, a CAx/PDM integration framework was constructed to realize the integration of PDM and other application systems. With the framework, the encapsulation of PDM function modules based on .NET Framework was achieved, a dynamic integration method of PDM and CAx systems was provided, the middle format of exchanging data for PDM and other application systems was represented by the XML( Extensible Markup Language) schema to share the information of enterprise application systems. The proposed integration technology can be effectively used to CAx /PDM integration, and meets the manufacturing enterprise's requirement on integrating application system suitably.
