Enrichment of Cs+, Ca2+ and Tl+ ions with microbiological collectors

Spicaria Violacea Abbott fungus was used as a microbiological collector for137Cs+,45Ca2+ and204Tl+ isotopes. The optimal conditions for the enrichment of these isotopes with respect to pH, time and concentration have been studied.

Uptake of radioactive strontium and cesium in rice plants. 1. Accumulation of Sr and Cs in rice grains through roots.

Water-cultured rice plants were exposed to /sup 89/Sr or /sup 137/Cs through roots for five days at their various growth stages and continued to grow until harvest. The harvested grains were radiochemically analyzed and the concentration factors were calculated. The maximum uptake of /sup 137/Cs in the grains was found at the booting stage, while that of /sup 89/Sr was at the flowering stage. The Cs uptake was 400 times higher at the booting stage, and 30 times at the flowering stage than those with Sr. The growth stage dependency of the uptake of Sr and Cs was the most important factor for a selective enrichment of Cs in rice grains. The specific affinity of Cs to cell sap and that of Sr for membrane substances of rice grains probably caused a selective redistribution inside the plant body. (auth)

The distribution of Li, Rb, Cs, and Pb in some Yugoslav granites

Authors discuss the results of twelve spectrochemical analyses of granites and granodiorites. It is shown that Li content varies between 10 and 72 p.p.m., but most of the specimens lie in the range of 20 p.p.m. The K/Rb ratios agree well with already published data. An interesting Cs enrichment is reported. The Pb × 1000/K ratio values show some tendency to cluster around 0.4, 0.7–0.8, and 1.0.
