The impact of moderate solar flare activity on ionospheric response from august 5th to 7th, 2023

This study investigates the ionospheric response to a period of heightened solar flare activity from August 5th to August 7th, 2023, by analysing ground-based observations of various ionospheric parameters. The data includes detailed information on solar flare events, including their class, start time, maximum time, and end time, along with solar activity indicators such as sunspot numbers, solar radio flux, and solar zenith angles. On August 5th, multiple C-class, M-class, and an X1.63 flare were recorded, with the X-class flare being the most intense event. Ionospheric measurements revealed enhancements in electron temperatures, reaching a peak of 2104K at 6 UT, coinciding with the onset of an M1.6 flare. Additionally, a pronounced increase in total electron content (TEC) was observed, peaking at 34 TEC units at 6 UT, suggesting increased ionization due to the flare's influence. On August 6th, an M5.51 flare was the most significant event. Notably, the peak electron temperature of 2097K and the TEC maximum of 35.9 units were recorded at 6 UT, several hours before the flare's maximum phase, indicating potential preconditioning effects from the flare's preparatory stages. August 7th witnessed an X1.51 flare, along with multiple M-class flares. The peak electron temperature of 2088K and the TEC maximum of 35.3 units were observed at 7 UT, again preceding the X1.51 flare's peak, suggesting the influence of precursor effects. Throughout the observation period, the data exhibited typical diurnal patterns in ion temperatures and TEC, consistent with regular ionospheric behavior driven by solar radiation intensity variations. The study's findings provide evidence of the ionosphere's responsive nature to intense solar flare activity, with significant enhancements in electron temperatures and TEC observed during flare events. Notably, the effects were evident not only during the peak flare phases but also several hours prior, potentially due to the arrival of energetic particles or precursor electromagnetic radiation, indicating the influence of preconditioning processes. Furthermore, the data suggests that solar flares can impact the ionosphere's chemistry and dynamics, as inferred from changes in the "Ion Percentage" parameter, representing relative ionospheric compositions. Continuous monitoring and analysis of such events across different geophysical conditions are crucial for advancing the understanding of solar-terrestrial interactions and their impacts on space-based technologies, contributing to the development of improved space weather prediction and mitigation strategies.

A comparison of ionospheric TEC between the South Atlantic anomaly region and the Indian Ocean region based on TIEGCM simulations in 2002

Using the Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Electrodynamic General Circulation Model (TIEGCM), a comparison of the ionospheric total electron content (TEC) between the South Atlantic anomaly (SAA) and the Indian Ocean (IO) at solar maximum is performed in this study. The results show that the average total electron content in the SAA is greater than that in the Indian Ocean in general. In order to further analyze the difference between the two regions, the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) are used to investigate the temporal and spatial characteristics of TEC. The empirical orthogonal function method separate part of the global four-peak structure (an equatorial ionization anomaly structure, distributed in Southeast Asia, South America, Africa, and central Pacific) and spatial variations in both regions. Moreover, the first mode of EOF shows the different distribution of Equatorial ionization anomaly in South America and central Pacific caused by deviation of geomagnetic field and tides between two regions, and the enhancement of TEC in SAA region at dusk is emphasized, but the enhancement of TEC in IO region at dawn is emphasized. The second mode performs the distribution of EIA in Africa related to solar radiation and E×B drift. The third mode indicates the similar spatiotemporal variations from the geomagnetic field. Besides, the correlation between TEC and Dst in two regions indicate that there are some deficiencies in simulation to the specificity of SAA, and the deficiencies are likely caused by the model’s inaccurate simulation of the magnetic field and particle deposition in the SAA region.

Longitudinal variations of ionospheric responses to the February and April 2023 geomagnetic storms over American and Asian sectors

This paper investigates the ionospheric responses to the February and April 2023 geomagnetic storms using Total Electron Content (TEC) derived from the 10 Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) stations at the transition of low to mid-latitudes (Approx. 20 ∼ 30°N) across different longitudes in the American and Asian sectors. Significant variations in both sectors were recorded during the recovery phase and were mainly attributed to the Prompt Penetration Electric Field (PPEF), Disturbance Dynamo Electric Field (DDEF) and the thermospheric neutral composition changes as O/N2 depletion. Similarly, the American and Asian sectors showed TEC enhancements, primarily attributed to the PPEF, during the main phase of the April storm. The negative TEC variations during the recovery phase were observed due to the DDEF and changes in O/N2. In the Asian sector, positive and negative variations were recorded over Pakistan and China, respectively, during the main phase of the April storm. These variations resulted in high and low concentrations of the O/N2 ratio due to Magnetosphere-Ionosphere-Thermosphere coupling.

IonosphericTotal Electron Content Changes during the 15 February 2018 and 30 April 2022 Solar Eclipses over South America and Antarctica

This is one of the first papers to study the ionospheric effects of two solar eclipses that occurred in South America and Antarctica under geomagnetic activity in different seasons (summer and autumn) and their impact on the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA). The changes in total electron content (TEC) during the 15 February 2018 and 30 April 2022 partial solar eclipses will be analyzed. The study is based on more than 390 GPS stations, Swarm-A, and DMSP F18 satellite measurements, such as TEC, electron density, and electron temperature. The ionospheric behaviors over the two-fifth days on both sides of each eclipse were used as a reference for estimating TEC changes. Regional TEC maps were created for the analysis. Background TEC levels were significantly higher during the 2022 eclipse than during the 2018 eclipse because ionospheric levels depend on solar index parameters. On the days of the 2018 and 2022 eclipses, the ionospheric enhancement was noticeable due to levels of geomagnetic activity. Although geomagnetic forcing impacted the ionosphere, both eclipses had evident depletions under the penumbra, wherein differential vertical TEC (DVTEC) reached values <−40%. The duration of the ionospheric effects persisted after 24 UT. Also, while a noticeable TEC depletion (DVTEC ∼−50%) of the southern EIA crest was observed during the 2018 eclipse (hemisphere summer), an evident TEC enhancement (DVTEC > 30%) at the same crest was seen during the eclipse of 2022 (hemisphere autumn). Swarm-A and DMSP F18 satellite measurements and analysis of other solar eclipses in the sector under quiet conditions supported the ionospheric behavior.

The Ionospheric Response to the 2013 SSW Event Over the Asian‐Australian Sector

AbstractThis study investigates the response of the Asian‐Australian low‐latitude ionosphere to the 2013 Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) event. The equatorial ionization anomaly structures were built from the latitudinal distribution of Total Electron Content (TEC) measured from 10 Global Positioning System receivers along 115°E in the Asian‐Australian sector. A pair of magnetometers and NASA Thermosphere‐Ionosphere‐Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics satellite airglow instrument were also employed to measure the equatorial electrojet strength (inferred E × B drift) and to unveil the changes in the neutral thermospheric O/N2 ratio during the SSW event, respectively. The relocation of the northern crests to higher latitudes during the SSW compared to the non‐SSW periods was mainly attributed to the combined effect of enhanced magnetometer‐inferred upward‐directed E × B drift and increasing solar flux. The local time shift in the thermospheric O/N2 ratio, a slight enhancement in the magnitude of the semi‐diurnal magnetometer‐inferred upward‐directed E × B drift, and changes in solar flux were primarily responsible for the hemispheric TEC enhancement during mid‐January compared to SSW onset. Additionally, the photo‐ionization effect due to increasing solar flux further enhances the TEC magnitude during the relaxing phase. On the other hand, the strong thermospheric equatorward wind played a crucial role in moving the plasma to lower latitudes during the zonal wind transition phases. A moderate geomagnetic storm of 17 January 2013 did not perturb the Asian‐Australian ionosphere. However, on 18 January 2013, the storm had a significant impact and greatly diminished the effect of the SSW.

Space weather impacts on the ionosphere over the southern African mid-latitude region

The ionosphere suffers major perturbations during severe space weather events such as Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs), solar flares, high-speed streams, and Corotating Interaction Regions (CIRs). The ionosphere can experience depletions or enhancements in Total Electron Content (TEC) during severe space weather conditions. The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) near-real-time (NRT) TEC maps were used to show the ionospheric variability during the geomagnetic storm of 3–8 Nov 2021 over the southern Africa mid-latitude region. The ionosonde TEC, NRT TEC, and the quiet-time AfriTEC model were compared during the 6-day period. A negative ionospheric response was observed during the main and recovery phases of the geomagnetic storm (4–5 Nov 2021). The changes to neutral composition O/N2 was one of the physical processes attributed to the decrease in TEC over the mid-latitude region. The GPS TEC maps showed a very good agreement with ionosonde measurements and the AfriTEC model. A strong east–west TEC gradient was observed occurring between two ionosonde stations.Graphical

The Global Variation of Low Ionosphere Under Action of Energetic Electron Precipitation

AbstractThe density in the D region is hard to observe on a large scale, because the density in this region is too low. In addition to solar radiation changes with a sinusoidal period of 24 hr, the energetic electron precipitation (EEP) is the major source for the ionospheric D region. In this study, we utilized observations from NOAA/MetOp satellites to derive the electron density profile from 60 to 150 km under the influence of EEP. It seems that the derived electron profile is roughly consistent with the observed one. Additionally, using above derived method of low ionospheric (D and E regions) electron profile based on the observations of NOAA/MetOp satellites, the actions of EEP on global ionosphere under different level of geomagnetic activity are analyzed. We find that EEP has a significant impact on the electron density in the altitude range from 60 to 90 km in the L ∼ 4.5–8 and MLT ∼ 9–14 regions, particularly during strong geomagnetic activity. A peak in Total Electron Content (TEC) was observed at MLT ∼ 11–12 and L ∼ 5.5–6, exhibiting an enhancement approximately 19.96 times higher than that observed during quiet periods. However, the effects of EEP decrease as altitude increases. The TEC enhancement at altitudes from 90 to 120 km during strong geomagnetic activity is like that at 60–90 km, but only about 2.08 times higher than that during quiet periods. In addition, only a weak increase is detected around midnight at altitudes from 120 to 150 km.

Regional ionospheric TEC modeling during geomagnetic storm in August 2021- data fusion using multi-instrument observations

Regional ionospheric Total Electron Content (TEC) models are most significant to investigate the variability of ionosphere during all-weather conditions. Since the ground-based TEC measurements are not available in oceanic and polar regions, space-based observations are incorporated to increase the positional accuracy and reliability of Global Ionospheric TEC Maps (GIMs). Therefore, data fusion techniques are necessary to enhance the prediction capability of regional ionospheric models by considering multi-source data. In view of this, an attempt is made to investigate Equatorial Ionization Anomaly (EIA) structures in low-latitudinal Indian region using multi-instrument data. Data observations from background model CODEGIM, available International GNSS Service (IGS) stations in India, GNSS receivers at KLEF and Tripura stations, FORMOSAT/COSMIC radio occultation and SWARM during geomagnetic storm period August 26–28, 2021 are used for the study. Spherical Harmonics Function (SHF) of order 4 is employed along with Weighted Least Squares analysis (WLS), where separate weight constraint is computed for each data source. TEC maps of spatial resolution 5° x 5° and temporal resolution of 1 h are generated to illustrate the dynamic behavior of ionosphere. The standard deviation for 3 days is obtained as 0.42, 0.61 and 1.43 TECU respectively. TEC depletions and enhancements are observed on August 27 and 28, with mean values of 12.74 and 15.27 TECU respectively, demonstrating negative and positive storm effects.

Validation of Ionospheric Specifications During Geomagnetic Storms: TEC and foF2 During the 2013 March Storm Event‐II

AbstractAssessing space weather modeling capability is a key element in improving existing models and developing new ones. In order to track improvement of the models and investigate impacts of forcing, from the lower atmosphere below and from the magnetosphere above, on the performance of ionosphere‐thermosphere models, we expand our previous assessment for 2013 March storm event (Shim et al., 2018, https://doi.org/10.1029/2018SW002034). In this study, we evaluate new simulations from upgraded models (the Coupled Thermosphere Ionosphere Plasmasphere Electrodynamics (CTIPe) model version 4.1 and the Global Ionosphere Thermosphere Model (GITM) version 21.11) and from the NCAR Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with thermosphere and ionosphere extension (WACCM‐X) version 2.2 including eight simulations in the previous study. A simulation from the NCAR Thermosphere‐Ionosphere‐Electrodynamics General Circulation Model version 2 (TIE‐GCM 2.0) is also included for comparison with WACCM‐X. TEC and foF2 changes from quiet‐time background are considered to evaluate the model performance on the storm impacts. For evaluation, we employ four skill scores: Correlation coefficient (CC), root‐mean square error (RMSE), ratio of the modeled to observed maximum percentage changes (Yield), and timing error (TE). It is found that the models tend to underestimate the storm‐time enhancements of foF2 (F2‐layer critical frequency) and TEC (Total Electron Content) and to predict foF2 and/or TEC better in North America but worse in the Southern Hemisphere. The ensemble simulation for TEC is comparable to results from a data assimilation model (Utah State University‐Global Assimilation of Ionospheric Measurements (USU‐GAIM)) with differences in skill score less than 3% and 6% for CC and RMSE, respectively.

Statistical analysis for EUV dynamic spectra and their impact on the ionosphere during solar flares

The X-rays and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) emitted during solar flares can rapidly change the physical composition of Earth’s ionosphere, causing space weather phenomena. It is important to develop an accurate understanding of solar flare emission spectra to understand how it affects the ionosphere. We reproduced the entire solar flare emission spectrum using an empirical model and physics-based model, and input it into the Earth’s atmospheric model, GAIA to calculate the total electron content (TEC) enhancement due to solar flare emission. We compared the statistics of nine solar flare events and calculated the TEC enhancements with the corresponding observed data. The model used in this study was able to estimate the TEC enhancement due to solar flare emission with a correlation coefficient greater than 0.9. The results of this study indicate that the TEC enhancement due to solar flare emission is determined by soft X-ray and EUV emission with wavelengths shorter than 35 nm. The TEC enhancement is found to be largely due to the change in the soft X-ray emission and EUV line emissions with wavelengths, such as Fe XVII 10.08 nm, Fe XIX 10.85 nm and He II 30.38 nm.Graphical

Storm Time Electrified MSTIDs Observed Over Mid‐Latitude North America

AbstractMedium‐scale Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances (MSTIDs) are prominent and ubiquitous features of the mid‐latitude ionosphere, and are observed in Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) and high‐resolution Global Navigational Satellite Service (GNSS) Total Electron Content (TEC) data. The mechanisms driving these MSTIDs are an open area of research, especially during geomagnetic storms. Previous studies have demonstrated that nightside MSTIDs are associated with an electrodynamic instability mechanism like Perkins, especially during geomagnetically quiet conditions. However, dayside MSTIDs are often associated with atmospheric gravity waves. Very few studies have analyzed the mechanisms driving MSTIDs during strong geomagnetic storms at mid‐latitudes. In this study, we present mid‐latitude MSTIDs observed in de‐trended GNSS TEC data and SuperDARN radars over the North American sector, during a geomagnetic storm (peak Kp reaching 9) on 7–8 September 2017. In SuperDARN, MSTIDs were observed in ionospheric backscatter with Line of Sight (LOS) velocities exceeding 800 m/s. Additionally, radar LOS velocities oscillated with amplitudes reaching ±500 m/s as the MSTIDs passed through the fields‐of‐view. In detrended TEC, these MSTIDs produced perturbations reaching ∼50 percent of background TEC magnitude. The MSTIDs were observed to propagate in the westward/south‐westward direction with a time period of ∼15 min. Projecting de‐trended GNSS TEC data along SuperDARN beams showed that enhancements in TEC were correlated with enhancements in SuperDARN SNR and positive LOS velocities. Finally, SuperDARN LOS velocities systematically switched polarities between the crests and the troughs of the MSTIDs, indicating the presence of polarization electric fields and an electrodynamic instability process during these MSTIDs.

Anomalous Disturbance of the Ionosphere in the East Asia Region During the Geomagnetically Quiet Day on 1 November 2016

AbstractIn this study, multiple data sets from Beidou geosynchronous Earth orbit (GEO) satellite, ionosonde, magnetometer, Swarm satellite, and meteor radar were used to investigate an anomalous disturbance of the ionosphere in East Asia on 1 November 2016. During 03:00–08:00 universal time (UT), the total electron content (TEC) observed by the Beidou GEO satellite decreased by up to 8.17% at low latitudes and increased by up to 140.19% at middle to low latitudes in East Asia compared to the average TEC on the reference days. The F2 peak electron density (NmF2) measured by ionosondes decreased by 16.00% at Sanya (109.4°E, 18.3°N) and increased by 51.96% and 53.97% at Wuhan (114.4°E, 30.5°N) and Shaoyang (111.3°E, 27.1°N), respectively. The equatorial electric field (EEF) observed by the Swarm satellite at 06:59 UT on 1 November was approximately 77.57% higher than on 4 November. The variations of equatorial electrojet near 100°E and 120°E on 1 November presented an east‐west asymmetry in which there was a significant enhancement in the east while there was no obvious increase in the west. The TEC enhancement derived by the Center for Orbit Determination in Europe also showed the same east‐west asymmetry in the two longitudes. Based on the comprehensive analysis of multiple observational data, the increase in EEF caused the ionospheric TEC and NmF2 to decrease at low latitudes and increase at middle to low latitudes in East Asia during 03:00–08:00 UT on 1 November 2016. The lower atmospheric tidal forcing could contribute to the enhancement of the EEF.

Role of internal atmospheric variability in the estimation of ionospheric response to solar and magnetospheric proton precipitation in January 2005

The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of internal atmospheric variability in the detection of ionospheric response to precipitating protons of solar and magnetospheric origin during 17–23 January 2005. For this purpose, we analyzed the results of ensemble runs of the whole atmosphere model EAGLE. We confirmed that the proton precipitation produces (directly and indirectly) significant TEC (Total Electron Content) enhancements at different latitudes. However, we also showed that internal atmospheric variability can strongly mask the forced signal, especially its after-effects, which can lead to false interpretation if only one model realization is considered. The ensemble standard deviation, or an atmospheric noise level, in TEC has a clear UT variation and spatial distribution, which defines the derivability of the signal depending on the time and the region of the forced effects. The noise itself is also affected by the increased ionization from protons, but its behavior is nonlinear and depends on the latitude, spectrum of the event and its time of occurrence. We conclude that studies of the ionospheric response to various space weather phenomena require the application of whole atmosphere models in ensemble mode to ensure statistical significance of the obtained results and a reliable interpretation of the observational data.

Ionospheric and magnetic signatures of extreme space weather events of 17 March and 23 June 2015 over the African sector

We have investigated responses of the African sector of the ionosphere to 17 March and 23 June 2015 severe geomagnetic storms. The vertical total electron content (TEC) measurements from Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) stations, which are located across the African continent, have been used to estimate the deviation of TEC (ΔTEC). The observed ionospheric response to these events was different at different locations. In the main phase of the 17 march 2015 storm, a significant positive ionospheric storm (ΔTEC maximum) occurred at Meli (245.8% enhancement) and Adis (105% enhancement) stations in the post-sunset period. On the other hand, during midnight negative ionospheric storms (ΔTEC minimum: ∼ 46%–68% depletion ) were observed at Dakr, Nklg, Wind, and Haro stations. The effects of 23 June 2015 storm are more pronounced during the initial phase. In the recovery phase of 23 June storm, negative storm effects observed at the eastern dip latitude and western equatorial stations. In contrast, at the northern and southern mid-latitude stations, we observed positive storm effect during the night periods. Night time TEC enhancement at mid-latitude stations probably caused by the vertical drift of the ionospheric plasma. We have also studied the magnetic signatures of the severe storms of 17 March and 23 June 2015 by analyzing their impacts on the horizontal (H-component) of the Earth’s magnetic field. By using a moving average filter, we have separated the effect of the magnetic disturbance (DP2) and the disturbance dynamo (Ddyn). The H-component analysis shows that there was maximum oscillation of DP2 and Ddyn currents occurrence when the IMF-Bz directed southward. In the main and recovery phases of the storm, this strong current oscillation is the driver for the development of positive ionospheric effect.

Driver of the Positive Ionospheric Storm over the South American Sector during 4 November 2021 Geomagnetic Storm

During geomagnetic storms, ionospheric storms can be driven by several mechanisms. Observations performed using ground- and space-based instruments were used to reveal the driver of the positive ionospheric storm over the South American sector during the 4 November 2021 geomagnetic storm. The positive storm appeared from 10:30 UT to 18:00 UT and covered the region from 40°S to 20°N. The maximum magnitudes of TEC (Total Electron Content) enhancement and relative TEC enhancement were about 20 TECU and 100%, respectively. Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) also observed a significant electron density increase over South America and the eastern Pacific Ocean. In the meantime, about 50% ∑O/N2 enhancement was observed by the Global-scale Observations of the Limb and Disk (GOLD) satellite at low latitudes. Ionosonde observations (AS00Q and CAJ2M) registered an ~80 km uplift in F2 peak height (HmF2) and a prominent F2 peak electron density (NmF2) increase ~3 h after the uplift. A prominent enhancement in the cross-polar cap potential (CPCP) in the southern hemisphere was also observed by Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) one hour earlier than the HmF2 uplift. Measurements of the Ionospheric Connection Explorer satellite (ICON) showed that the outward E×B drift was enhanced significantly and that the horizontal ion drift was poleward. According to the ICON ion drift observations, the HmF2 uplift was caused by an electric field rather than equatorward neutral wind. We propose that the enhanced eastward electric field dominated the positive ionospheric storm and that the thermospheric composition variation may have also contributed.

Variations of ionospheric TEC due to coronal mass ejections and geomagnetic storm over New Zealand

The variations of ionospheric Total electron content (TEC) due to coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and geomagnetic storms over New Zealand were studied. TEC data were collected from dual-frequency GPS sites operated by the University NAVSTAR Consortium in New Zealand, at Ous2 (−45.86°N, 170.51°E), Dund (−45.89°N, 170.59°E), Mtjo (−43.99°N, 170.46°E), and Quar (−43.53°N, 169.81°E) stations. The findings of this study show that the variability of ionospheric TEC was more noticeable during the main phase of the storm on September 08, 2017 than the initial phase on September 07, 2017, recovery phase on September 09, 2017, and during the CME day on September 06, 2017. Also, the enhancements of change in TEC (ΔTEC) were pronounced more over the Mtjo station during the CME day and over the Quar station during the geomagnetic storm day than over other stations. On September 06, 2017, two X-class solar flares, specifically X2.2 and X9.3, were observed with quiet geomagnetic storm conditions throughout the CME day, resulting in an increase in TEC. On September 07, 2017, the M7.3, X1.3, and on September 08, 2017, the X8.1 solar flare classes with disturbed geomagnetic conditions led to a significant enhancement of TEC over the stations at 02:00 UT (13:00 LT). Finally, during the main phase of the storm, the solar wind electric field (IEF Ey) and prompt penetration electric field (PPEF) showed good correlations in which the fluctuation of PPEF, an increase in Ey, Dst minimum, and horizontal Earth’s magnetic field are well associated with strong changes in TEC.

Analysis of Ionospheric Perturbations Possibly Related to Yangbi Ms6.4 and Maduo Ms7.4 Earthquakes on 21 May 2021 in China Using GPS TEC and GIM TEC Data

On 21 May 2021 (UT), Yangbi Ms6.4 and Maduo Ms7.4 earthquakes occurred in mainland China. This paper analyzed the ionospheric perturbations possibly related to the earthquake, based on global positioning system (GPS) total electron content (TEC) and global ionosphere map (GIM) TEC data. We identified GPS TEC anomalies by the sliding quartile, based on statistical analysis. After eliminating the days with high solar activity levels and strong geomagnetic disturbances, the time series analysis of GPS TEC data showed that there were significant TEC anomalies from 5 to 10 May. TEC anomalies were mainly positive anomalies. We obtained the spatial and temporal distributions of TEC anomalies using natural neighbor interpolation (NNI). The results showed that the TEC anomalies were distributed in the seismogenic zone and surrounded the epicenters of the Maduo and Yangbi earthquakes, indicating that they may be related to the earthquakes. From the GIM TEC difference map, we found the TEC enhancement in the seismogenic zone and its magnetic conjugate area of the Maduo and Yangbi earthquakes at 10:00–12:00 (UT) on the 5 and 6 May. We discussed our results according to the lithosphere-atmosphere-ionosphere coupling mechanism. Finally, based our results, we suggested that the Yangbi and Maduo earthquakes may affect the ionosphere through seismogenic electric field and thermal anomalies generated during the process of lithosphere-atmosphere-ionosphere coupling.

Effects of solar flares on ionospheric TEC over Iceland before and during the geomagnetic storm of 8 September 2017

The effects of solar flares on ionospheric total electron content (TEC) over Iceland before and during the geomagnetic storm of September 8, 2017 were studied. Global Positioning Syste (GPS)-TEC data were obtained from dual-frequency GPS sites operated by the University NAVSTAR Consortium at Dyna (65.06°N, −16.6°E) and Kisa (64.7°N, −17.6°E) stations. The findings of this study show that the enhancement of ionospheric TEC was more noticeable over the Kisa station than over the Dyna station during the coronal mass ejection day. However, during the geomagnetic storm day, maximum enhancement of TEC was observed over the Dyna station than over the Kisa station. The values of the ionospheric TEC during the initial phase of the storm were greater than during the main and recovery phases of the storm over both stations. This might be due to the effects of X-class solar flares and shock wave preceding the arriving of interplanetary coronal mass ejections plasma. The spatial gradients of TEC between two nearby stations are similar during the main phase of the storm, but slightly different during the initial and recovery phases of the storm. Finally, solar events have a favorable influence on geomagnetic storm indices and ionospheric observables.

Spatial and Temporal Confinement of the Ionospheric Responses During the St. Patrick's Day Storm of March 2015

AbstractThe present study provides a multi‐instrument analysis of the ionospheric response to the effects of the St. Patrick's Day storm of 17–18 March 2015. Simultaneous observations from 85 global positioning system stations and multiple satellites along the past observations from the literature survey are utilized to ascertain the spatio‐temporal confinements between −20°E and 150°E longitudes. The main results include longitudinal differences in the episodic equatorward expansions of the auroral oval which is shown to relate with varying high‐latitude Joule heating and equatorward wind surges at different local times. The zonal movement of equatorial ion density depletions from initially east to west followed by a sluggish westward pattern on the night of 17 March is observed. The zonal movement is found to be better explained by the longitudinally decreasing impact of the disturbance dynamo in the nightside. The enhancements in total electron content during morning on 17 March are observed over mid‐latitudes, which are found to move equatorward in the noon time. These enhancements could be associated with the enhanced O density bulge resulting from the thermospheric expansion during the main phase. A daytime sustained and confined electron density depletion between about 100°E and 170°E is observed on 18 March which is being discussed in detail for the first time. Interestingly, large longitudinal differences are observed in the response of the disturbance dynamo, including no observable effect during morning (−20°E–20°E) but dominant afternoon and westward progression during the day of 18 March.

Convergence Effects on the Ionosphere During and After the Annular Solar Eclipse on 21 June 2020

AbstractIn this study, we analyze the observations of the ionosondes at Wuhan (30.4°N, 114.4°E, 82.4% obscuration), Xiamen (24.2°N, 118.07°E, 97.8% obscuration), and Nanning (22.7°N, 109.25°E, 81.1% obscuration), as well as the total electron content (TEC) from the global ionosphere maps (GIMs) to examine the ionospheric behaviors in the F‐region on 21 June 2020 solar eclipse day. The observations show that a TEC enhancement occurred after the major depression near the center path of the solar eclipse, and it lasts to midnight on the solar eclipse day. Notes that the occurrence of the TEC enhancement is accompanied by the prominent TEC depletion in the southern side of the center path in the nighttime. The independent in situ electron density (Ne) observation from the Swarm‐B satellite and the calibrated TEC profile from the radio occultation technique onboard the FORMOSAT‐7/Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate‐2 satellites also observed the long‐lasting enhancement in the F2 region near midnight. The solar eclipse‐induced convergence effects can result in the long‐lasting ionospheric perturbations, which may further cause the spread‐F in the nighttime.
