Air-sea CO2 exchange in the western Pacific influenced by monsoon and giant diatom (Ethmodiscus rex) blooms during the last deglaciation

The concentration of atmospheric CO2 increased rapidly during the last deglaciation due to CO2 outgassing from oceans. However, records of deglacial surface seawater pCO2-sw are sparse, hindering our understanding of the process and mechanism of air-sea CO2 exchange and its influence on glacial-interglacial climate change. Here we reconstructed surface seawater pCO2-sw for the last deglacial period using carbon isotope composition (δ13C) of giant diatom (Ethmodiscus rex) frustules from deep-sea sedimentary core collected in the Philippine Sea, western Pacific. Results showed that air-sea CO2 was fluctuating in the western Pacific during the last deglaciation. The gradients of air-sea CO2 are dominated by monsoon and biological productivity. The enhanced East Asian winter Monsoon and shallow thermocline during late Heinrich Stadial 1 maintained equilibrium in the air-sea CO2 exchange balance. During the Bølling period, enhanced East Asian Summer Monsoon has been observed to accelerate the dissolution of eolian-dust and promoted the growth of Ethmodiscus rex, which has been linked to increased primary productivity and, consequently, the uptake of atmospheric CO2 in the western Pacific. During the Allerød period, continued enhancement of EASM allowed the Philippine Sea to act as a weak CO2 source releasing CO2 to the atmosphere. During the Younger Dryas period, as the EASM weaken and the EAWM strengthen, ΔpCO2(sw-atm) decreased. Our findings highlight the tropical ocean’s role in deglacial air-sea CO2 exchange and provide insights into the monsoonal and biological drivers of the processes.

Phylogenomics and biogeographical diversification of Collabieae (Orchidaceae) and its implication in the reconstruction of the dynamic history of Asian evergreen broadleaved forests

The tribe Collabieae (Epidendroideae, Orchidaceae) comprises approximately 500 species. Generic delimitation within Collabieae are confusing and phylogenetic interrelationships within the Collabieae have not been well resolved. Plastid genomes and nuclear internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences were used to estimate the phylogenetic relationships, ancestral ranges, and diversification rates of Collabieae. The results showed that Collabieae was subdivided into nine clades with high support. We proposed to combine Ancistrochilus and Pachystoma into Spathoglottis, merge Collabium and Chrysoglossum into Diglyphosa, and separate Pilophyllum and Hancockia as distinctive genera. The diversification of the nine clades of Collabieae might be associated with the uplift of the Himalayas during the Late Oligocene/Early Miocene. The enhanced East Asian summer monsoon in the Late Miocene may have promoted the rapid diversification of Collabieae at a sustained high diversification rate. The increased size of terrestrial pseudobulbs may be one of the drivers of Collabieae diversification. Our results suggest that the establishment and development of evergreen broadleaved forests facilitated the diversification of Collabieae.

How the enhanced East Asian summer monsoon regulates total gross primary production in eastern China

Recognizing the relationship between gross primary production (GPP) and precipitation in eastern China, the East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM) plays a crucial role in shaping GPP. Despite confirmation of the strong link between EASM and GPP, there remains a notable research gap in understanding the specific impact of the EASM on GPP in different regions of eastern China. Here we used simulations from Trends in Net Land–Atmosphere Carbon Exchanges (TRENDY) models from 1951 to 2010 and divided eastern China into five subregions for the study. We also used the New East Asian Summer Monsoon Index (NEWI) as a quantitative metric to distinguish between periods of strong and weak EASM. Building on this, this study aims to investigate the response of GPP in different subregions of eastern China. Regionally, under strengthened EASM years (1954, 1957, 1965, 1969, 1977, 1980, 1983, 1987, 1993 and 1998), East China experienced the most pronounced increase in GPP at 12 ± 21 (mean ± 1 sigma) gC m−2 mon−1 compared to the weak EASM years (1958, 1961, 1972, 1973,1978, 1981, 1985, 1994, 1997 and 2004). In contrast, Southwest China showed a decline in GPP at −4 ± 10 gC m−2 mon−1. Moreover, GPP also increased in Northeast and North China when EASM strengthened, while South China showed a decline in GPP. This indicated that GPP changed with monsoon intensity. According to the mechanism analysis, during strong EASM, there was intense moisture convergence through alterations in the atmospheric circulation field over East China and abundant precipitation, which further contributed to the increase in GPP. Downward solar radiation in Southwest China decreased with EASM enhancement, which suppressed GPP and hindered vegetation growth. Overall, the results highlight the importance of accurately predicting the impact of different EASM intensities of regional carbon fluxes.

Dormant dune fields and ameliorative moisture conditions in the West Gobi Desert in East Asia during the Last Interglacial

Arid and semiarid regions are environmentally vulnerable to global warming. Thus, studying their environmental history during warm periods (e.g., the Last Interglacial, LIG) is crucial for understanding their future changes too. The West Gobi Desert is a transitional zone influenced by the westerlies and the East Asian monsoon system. Therefore, the variation in atmospheric circulation profoundly affects its water vapor transport and landscape evolution. Due to the scarcity of continuous records, the moisture transport process remains ambiguous, which limits further research on paleolake evolution and aeolian activity. Here, we combine paleoclimate simulations from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 6 (CMIP6)-Paleoclimate Modeling Intercomparison Project 4 (PMIP4) and geological records to clarify the water vapor transport pathways and aeolian activity in the West Gobi Desert during the LIG, compared to the reference period (the piControl). Our results show that increased rainfall and meltwater were possible supplies for surface water during the LIG and were associated with enhanced East Asian summer monsoon and higher surface air temperatures. Concomitantly, weakening aeolian activity and dormant dune fields occurred in the West Gobi Desert, resulting from higher surface moisture content and weaker surface wind regimes associated with the weakening westerlies and East Asian winter monsoon. Notably, the limited weakening of aeolian activity that occurred in the LIG winter and spring was caused by weaker surface wind and deteriorating surface moisture conditions, while the significant dormancy of dune fields in the LIG summer and autumn was initiated by the combined effects of ameliorative surface moisture conditions and lower surface wind speed.

Late Cenozoic Cooling History of the Xigaze Fore-Arc Basin along the Yarlung–Zangbo Suture Zone (Southern Tibet): New Insights from Low-Temperature Thermochronology

Abstract The Tibetan Plateau is currently the widest and highest elevation orogenic plateau on Earth. It formed as a response to the Cenozoic and is still ongoing collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates. The Xigaze fore-arc basin distributed along the Indus–Yarlung suture zone in southern Tibet preserves important information related to the late Cenozoic tectonic and topographic evolution of the plateau. In this study, apatite fission track (AFT) thermochronology was carried out on twelve sandstone samples from the middle segment of the Xigaze basin and additionally on four sedimentary rocks from the neighboring Dazhuka (Kailas) and Liuqu Formations. Inverse thermal history modeling results reveal that the fore-arc basin rocks experienced episodic late Oligocene to Miocene enhanced cooling. Taking into account regional geological data, it is suggested that the late Oligocene-early Miocene (~27–18 Ma) cooling recognized in the northern part of the basin was promoted by fault activity along the Great Counter thrust, while mid-to-late Miocene-accelerated exhumation was facilitated by strong incision of the Yarlung and Buqu rivers, which probably resulted from enhanced East Asian summer monsoon precipitation. Sandstone and conglomerate samples from the Dazhuka and Liuqu Formations yielded comparable Miocene AFT apparent ages to those of the Xigaze basin sediments, indicative of (mid-to-late Miocene) exhumation soon after their early Miocene burial (> ~3–4 km). Additionally, our new and published low-temperature thermochronological data indicate that enhanced basement cooling during the Miocene prevailed in vast areas of central southern Tibet when regional exhumation was triggered by both tectonic and climatic contributing factors. This recent and widespread regional exhumation also led to the formation of the high-relief topography of the external drainage area in southern Tibet, including the Xigaze fore-arc basin.

Sea level and East Asian monsoon influenced chemical weathering records in the southern South China Sea over the past 21 ka

High-resolution major element geochemistry of Core MD05–2892 from the lower Sunda Slope was analyzed to investigate the variation of chemical weathering records and its controlling factors in the southern South China Sea since the last glaciation. Chemical index of alteration (CIA) and SiO2/Na2O ratio were selected as chemical weathering proxies. The values of the proxies are higher during the last glaciation than during the Holocene. We attribute this to the provenance shift caused by sea level change. Provenance analysis indicates that the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra were the major sediment sources for the study region during the last glaciation, while the Indochina Peninsula has been the major source since the early Holocene. Accordingly, the weathering evolution analysis reveals increased physical erosion in the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra during enhanced East Asian summer monsoon rainfall, while increased chemical weathering in the Indochina Peninsula during the intensified monsoon rainfall. Therefore, the chemical weathering records of the deep-sea sediments in the southern South China Sea were regulated by monsoon rainfall-driven physical erosion in the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra during the last glaciation, while the records have been influenced by monsoon rainfall-induced chemical weathering in the Indochina Peninsula since the early Holocene. This study emphasizes that higher weathering values of the deep-sea sediments during the last glaciation could be related to the provenance variation driven by sea level change, rather than to enhanced chemical weathering in the same provenance.

Links Between Orbital Forcing, Antarctic Ice Volume, and the East Asian Hydrological Cycle Over the Pliocene

AbstractRevealing the evolution of monsoonal intensity through the Pliocene on orbital timescales is of potential utility for providing insights into the response of Asian monsoons to future high pCO2 scenarios. Here, we report a continuous Pliocene cyclostratigraphic record from lake deposits of the Xinding Basin, Shanxi Graben, North China, and reconstruct the regional hydrological cycle from this location during ∼5.2 to 2.56 Ma. Our results show that regional hydrological cycling was consistently dominated by long‐and short‐eccentricity (405‐and 100‐kyr) forcing over the Pliocene. Gamma‐ray (GR) data (reflecting hydrodynamic changes) show strengthened 100‐kyr eccentricity power after ∼3.5 Ma, whereas 100‐kyr eccentricity power preserved in magnetic susceptibility (MS; interpreted as a proxy of pedogenesis and magnetic mineral dissolution) slightly weakened after ∼3.5 Ma. This orbital power transition at the 100‐kyr eccentricity scale may link to expansion of Antarctic ice volume after ∼3.5 Ma, which enhanced East Asian summer monsoon intensity and thus increased summer rainfall in North China, resulting in changes to hydrological cycling and the expression of eccentricity climate forcing in East Asian basins. In addition, our results demonstrate that the orbital configuration at ∼4.2–4.4 Ma could have been a contributory factor in strengthening the intensity of the East Asian summer monsoon at this time.

Mid-Miocene terrestrial carbon isotope shift driven by atmospheric CO2 in the Xining Basin, NE Tibetan Plateau

The Mid-Miocene Climatic Optimum (MMCO; ~17–15 Ma) was a relatively recent warming event unrelated to human activity that provides an ideal analogue for our global warming future. However, the terrestrial ecosystem response to the MMCO remains unclear because of limited records. Continuous sedimentation from the Tashan Borehole (TSB) in the Xining Basin, northeastern Tibetan Plateau (NETP) spans the entire MMCO, with dates of 18.5–13.5 Ma from high-resolution paleomagnetic studies. Here, we explore the organic carbon isotope (δ13CTOC) record of TSB to investigate the NETP terrestrial ecosystem response to the MMCO. The sediments are typical floodplain deposits with δ13CTOC values ranging from −28.03‰ to −25.16‰, indicating terrestrial C3 plants were the dominant NETP terrestrial vegetation during MMCO. Further, an obviously negative shift of 0.6‰ occurred in TSB δ13CTOC during ~17.6–14.2 Ma. TSB δ13CTOC values show the opposite trend to global benthic δ13C values, both in the long-term Monterey Excursion event and short-term carbon maxima events. Increased atmospheric CO2 during the MMCO enhanced the carbon isotope fractionation through photosynthesis by terrestrial plants and resulted in more 12C-enriched organic matter. Similar processes on a global scale subsequently accounted for part of the Monterey carbon isotope excursion. Therefore, in warm and humid conditions, the carbon isotope cycle of terrestrial C3 plants in the Xining Basin was mainly controlled by atmospheric CO2 concentration, with superimposition of effects of enhanced East Asian summer monsoon precipitation.

Optically stimulated luminescence dating and paleoclimatic implications of the Holocene dune sands in the Hunshandake Sandy Land, Northeast China

Aeolian sediments are important geological archives of paleoclimate changes. Due to the fragile ecosystem of desert, sand dune mobility is particularly sensitive to climate change, and is thus important for revealing the stabilization and mobilization processes of dunes during the geological past. In northeastern China, several sandy lands are located in the East Asian monsoonal region, and desert evolution has been used to infer the waxing and waning of monsoonal climate. However, the relationship between dynamic aeolian landscapes and forcing mechanisms is still under debate due to the complex nature of the aeolian dune systems. In this study, we analyse two aeolian sand dune sections in the Hunshandake Sandy Land, northeast China, located at the northern edge of the East Asian summer monsoon, explore regional paleoclimatic changes during the Holocene. We carried out high-resolution optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating to develop a well-constrained chronology for the dune sands, as well as analyses of multiple climatic proxies including magnetic susceptibility, particle size, and color parameters, to obtain knowledge about dune mobility and climatic changes. Our results indicate that the early Holocene was characterized by the accumulation of aeolian dune sands, implying an arid climate, driven by an enhanced East Asian winter monsoon. Paleosols were generally developed in the mid-Holocene (∼8 and 4 ka) when the sand dunes were stabilized by vegetation under a relatively warm and humid climate driven by an enhanced East Asian summer monsoon. In the late Holocene, from ∼4 ka to the present, climate returned to an arid and semi-arid phase, marked by aeolian dune sands with some weakly-developed paleosols. Through comparison of the aeolian record with the other East Asian monsoonal records and the sea-surface temperature of the North Pacific, we suggest that the evolution of the East Asian monsoon, which was paced by both the melting and expansion from the Northern Hemisphere ice sheet as well as the changes of solar radiation, played an important role in driving climate change in the Hunshandake Sandy Land during the Holocene.

A preliminary study of natural environmental change and its impact on early Late Paleolithic people in the northeast central Korean Peninsula during Marine Istope Stage 3 (40–30k cal a bp)

ABSTRACTWe comprehensively analyzed sediments obtained from an archeological excavation. A trench sediment profile of Maedun Cave (MC), South Korea, was analyzed geoarchaeologically. Multi‐proxy analyses (palynomorphs, grain size, magnetic susceptibility, animal bones and artifacts) reflected the vegetation, hydroclimate and lives of prehistoric people at Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3 (ca. 40–30k cal a bp) in the early Late Paleolithic. The palynoflora consisted of pollen and non‐pollen palynomorphs. Under the air‐circulation system in the cave, anemophilous pollen flowed in during the day, whereas waterborne pollen and spores, and freshwater algae, were transported by flooding during the summer monsoon rainy season. Mixed conifer and deciduous broad‐leaved forest with an understory of pteridophytes flourished around the north‐east central Korean Peninsula during MIS 3. Freshwater algae and grass pollen records may reflect precipitation intensity. It is assumed that they had flowed in during flooding caused by high precipitation during the enhanced East Asian summer monsoon, corresponding to Dansgaard–Oeschger (D/O) events 5 and 8 of δ18O GISP2 and Hulu Cave. The prehistoric people hunted herbivorous animals in the area around MC and sheltered inside it seasonally. They also used the grains of oats growing near the dwelling as a source of food.

East-west asymmetry in the distribution of rainfall in the Chinese Loess Plateau during the Holocene

As the cradle of Chinese civilization the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) and its climatic and environmental history have attracted much research attention; however, the spatial characteristics of Holocene climatic conditions across the CLP remains unclear. We investigated five loess sections from the Ganjia Basin in the western CLP, and used paleoclimatic indexes from one well-dated loess-paleosol sequence to reconstruct precipitation variation during the past ~15,000 years. The chronology of the loess section is well established, based on 12 AMS 14C dates from bulk organic matter. Loess deposited before 8 ka (1 ka = 1000 years before 1950 CE) indicates that precipitation was low from ~15 to 8 ka. Subsequently, a paleosol, characterized by higher magnetic susceptibility and more negative organic carbon isotopic values, developed under the moist conditions of the middle to late Holocene. Comparison with paleoclimatic records from the CLP revealed that precipitation across the CLP was low during the early Holocene and reached its highest level during 8–3 ka, against the background of an enhanced East Asian summer monsoon (EASM). In the eastern CLP (the region east of the Liupan Mountains), the climate became dry after 3 ka because of a weakening of the EASM; however, precipitation in the western CLP was relatively high at this time. This observation of an east–west asymmetry in precipitation in the CLP during the Holocene based on geological data is supported by numerical modeling results from PMIP3, which indicate that it could have been caused by the westward extension of the western Pacific subtropical high. Our findings provide an analog for the study of interglacials on a longer time-scale and they demonstrate that the pattern of moisture conditions between the eastern and western CLP may differ on sub-orbital timescales.

Links between the thermal condition of the Tibetan Plateau in summer and atmospheric circulation and climate anomalies over the Eurasian continent

We examine the links between the thermal condition of the troposphere over the Tibetan Plateau with the atmospheric circulation and climate over the Eurasian continent. The temperature of the troposphere over the Tibetan Plateau is higher than the temperature in other regions at the same latitude and is consistent with the temperature of the Eurasian troposphere on an interannual timescale. The higher temperature of the troposphere over the Tibetan Plateau leads to anomalous south–north temperature gradients from mid-latitudes over the Eurasian continent to its two flanks, accompanied by anomalous easterly and westerly winds in the upper troposphere in the subtropics and at higher latitudes. Anomalous anticyclonic circulations and subsidence motions appear between the anomalous easterly and westerly winds and contribute to the high surface air temperature over West Asia, Central Asia and East Asia via anomalous vertical temperature advection in the troposphere and change in the amount of solar radiation incident on the surface. The enhanced East Asian summer monsoon associated with the high temperature of the troposphere over the Tibetan Plateau also partly contributes to the high surface air temperature over East Asia via horizontal temperature advection. The westerly wind anomalies in the north of the mid-latitudes over the Eurasian continent indicate the enhancement and northward shift of the mid-latitude westerly jet. This is related to anomalous upward motion and higher precipitation in Northeast China and North China. Sensitivity experiments based on an atmospheric model verify the impact of anomalous tropospheric heating over the Tibetan Plateau in summer on the atmospheric circulation over the Eurasian continent.

Evolution of the Upper Yellow River as Revealed by Changes in Heavy-Mineral and Geochemical (REE) Signatures of Fluvial Terraces (Lanzhou, China)

Despite decades of study, the factors that controlled the formation and evolution of theupper reaches of the Yellow River, including uplift of the northeastern Tibetan Plateau, Pliocene-Pleistocene climate change, and autogenetic processes are still poorly constrained. The stratigraphicrecord of such paleogeographic evolution is recorded in the sequence of nine terraces formed duringprogressive incision of the Yellow River in the last 1.7 Ma. This article investigates in detail forsediment provenance in terraces of the Lanzhou area, based on heavy-mineral and geochemical(REE) signatures. Two main provenance changes are identified, pointing each to a majorpaleogeographic reorganization coupled with expansion of the upper Yellow River catchment andenhanced sediment fluxes. The first change took place between the deposition of terrace T9 (formedaround 1.7 Ma) and terrace T8 (formed around 1.5 Ma), when rapid fluvial incision point to tectoniccontrol and active uplift of northeastern Tibetan Plateau. The second change took place betweendeposition of terrace T4 (formed around 0.86 Ma) and terrace T3 (formed around 0.14 Ma), duringa period of low incision rates and notably enhanced sediment fluxes as a response to enhanced EastAsian Summer Monsoon and consequently increased precipitations, pointing instead chiefly toclimatic control.

Enhanced Latent Heating over the Tibetan Plateau as a Key to the Enhanced East Asian Summer Monsoon Circulation under a Warming Climate

AbstractCoupled climate system models consistently show that the low-level southerly wind associated with the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) is enhanced under anthropogenic greenhouse gas forcing, and the enhanced EASM was attributed to the enhanced land–sea thermal contrast by previous studies. Based on a comparison of the global warming scenarios with the present-day climate in an ensemble of 30 coupled models from phase 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5), we show evidence that changes in land–sea thermal contrast cannot explain the enhanced EASM circulation in terms of the seasonality. Indeed, the enhanced low-level southerly wind over East Asia is associated with a large-scale anomalous cyclone around the Tibetan Plateau (TP), and numerical simulation by the Linear Baroclinic Model suggests that the enhanced latent heating over the TP associated with enhanced precipitation is responsible for this low-level cyclone anomaly and the enhanced EASM circulation projected by the coupled models. Moisture budget analysis shows that enhanced hydrological recycling and enhanced vertical moisture advection due to increased specific humidity have the largest contribution to the increased precipitation over the TP, and more than half of the intermodel uncertainty in the projected change of EASM circulation is associated with the uncertainty in the changes of precipitation over the TP. Therefore, the TP plays an essential role in enhancing the EASM circulation under global warming through enhanced latent heating over the TP.

Rapid incision of the Mekong River in the middle Miocene linked to monsoonal precipitation

The uplift of orogenic plateaus has been assumed to be coincident with the fluvial incision of the gorges that commonly cut plateau margins. The Mekong River, which drains the eastern Qiangtang Terrane and southeastern Tibetan Plateau, is one of the ten largest rivers in the world by water and sediment discharge. When the Mekong River was established remains highly debated—with estimates that range from more than 55 to less than 5 million years ago—despite being a key constraint on the elevation history of the Tibetan Plateau. Here we report low-temperature thermochronology data from river bedrock samples that reveal a phase of rapid downward incision (>700 m) of the Mekong River during the middle Miocene about 17 million years ago, long after the uplift of the central and southeastern Tibetan Plateau. However, this coincides with a period of enhanced East Asian summer monsoon precipitation over the region compared with the early Miocene. Using stream profile modelling, we demonstrate that such an increase in precipitation could have produced the observed incision in the Mekong River. In the absence of an obvious tectonic contribution, we suggest that the rapid incision of the Tibetan Plateau and the establishment of the Mekong River in the middle Miocene may be attributed to increased erosion during a period of high monsoon precipitation. Incision of the Mekong River that occurred after the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau may have been driven by a period of high monsoon precipitation, as suggested by age data from river bedrock samples and stream profile modelling.

Luminescence Chronology and Radiocarbon Reservoir Age Determination of Lacustrine Sediments from the Heihai Lake, NE Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and Its Paleoclimate Implications

The accurately determining the lake 14C reservoir age has a crucial significance for climatic reconstruction. In this study, the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating method is employed to date samples from highstand lacustrine sediments, palaeoshoreline, fluvial terrace, and the alluvial fan of the Heihai Lake catchment. Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) 14C dating was also used to date fossil plants from highstand lacustrine sediments. Based on the calculations of linear regression with OSL against radiocarbon ages for same layers of two sections, the quantitative 14C reservoir ages were estimated to lie between 3 353 and 3 464 yr during the 1.8 to 2.4 ka, which showed temporal variation. The sources of old carbon are the dissolution of carbonate bedrocks distributed along the Kunlun Mountain. The OSL ages of the different members of the hydatogen sedimentary system at Heihai Lake catchment indicate that a stronger hydrologic condition occurred from 3.0±0.2 to 1.8±0.2 ka, with a maximum lake level of 9 m higher than present. This humid stage was widely recorded in different sediments on the QTP and Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP), indicating its broad synchronicity across the Asian Summer Monsoon region. The enhanced East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM) and the Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) resulted in the increase of moisture availability for the Heihai Lake area during this stage.

Atmospheric Rivers over the Northwestern Pacific: Climatology and Interannual Variability

AbstractAtmospheric rivers (ARs), conduits of intense water vapor transport in the midlatitudes, are critically important for water resources and heavy rainfall events over the west coast of North America, Europe, and Africa. ARs are also frequently observed over the northwestern Pacific (NWP) during boreal summer but have not been studied comprehensively. Here the climatology, seasonal variation, interannual variability, and predictability of NWP ARs (NWPARs) are examined by using a large ensemble, high-resolution atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) simulation and a global atmospheric reanalysis. The AGCM captures general characteristics of climatology and variability compared to the reanalysis, suggesting a strong sea surface temperature (SST) effect on NWPARs. The summertime NWPAR occurrences are tightly related to El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in the preceding winter through Indo–western Pacific Ocean capacitor (IPOC) effects. An enhanced East Asian summer monsoon and a low-level anticyclonic anomaly over the tropical western North Pacific in the post–El Niño summer reinforce low-level water vapor transport from the tropics with increased occurrence of NWPARs. The strong coupling with ENSO and IPOC indicates a high predictability of anomalous summertime NWPAR activity.

Development of a regional ocean–atmosphere‐wave coupled model and its preliminary evaluation over the CORDEX East Asia domain

ABSTRACTIn this study, a regional ocean–atmosphere‐wave coupled model was developed using the Ocean Atmosphere Sea Ice Soil (OASIS) version 3 coupler and applied to the Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) Phase 1 East Asia domain. The impacts of the non‐breaking surface wave‐induced mixing Bv on the model performance were investigated. The inclusion of the surface wave model enhanced the vertical mixing in the upper 100 m of the ocean and deepened the simulated ocean mixed layer. The too‐shallow ocean mixed layer in the simulation without surface waves was reduced in some places, e.g. over the Bay of Bengal. The coupling of the surface wave model also reduced the cold biases of the ocean temperature in the lower 30 m of the ocean over the southern Northwest Pacific. Due to the shallower ocean mixed layer depth in summer, the effects of Bv were stronger in summer than in winter. For the monsoon simulation, the wave‐coupled simulation favoured an enhanced East Asian summer monsoon due to the colder simulated sea surface temperature (SST) over the Northwest Pacific, whereas in winter, the warmer simulated SST over the area north of 40°N led to a slightly stronger winter monsoon over Far East Asia than did the no wave simulation.

Evolution of East Asian monsoon: Clay mineral evidence in the western Philippine Sea over the past 700 kyr

Clay mineral assemblage of the core MD06-3047 in the western Philippine Sea has been used to trace sediment provenance and transport process and thus to constrain the East Asian monsoon evolution as well as its forcing mechanism over the past 700kyr. Clay minerals mainly consist of smectite (61%) and illite (23%), with minor chlorite (10%) and kaolinite (6%). Provenance analyses suggest that the smectite originates predominantly from the alteration of nearby Luzon volcanic rocks. Illite is primarily derived from the Asian continent with eolian origin. Illite contents show strong glacial/interglacial cyclicity as constrained by oxygen isotope stratigraphy. Variations of illite contents are ultimately controlled by the East Asian monsoon evolution, characterized by higher illite values during glacials with relatively stronger East Asian winter monsoon but weaker East Asian summer monsoon. During interglacials, enhanced East Asian summer monsoon and rainfall could produce more smectite with poor crystallinity from Luzon to the study core. Spectral analyses of illite content and smectite crystallinity display a strong periodicity at 100kyr for the East Asian winter monsoon and 100kyr, 30kyr, and 23kyr periodicities for the East Asian summer monsoon, respectively, suggesting the unique forcing processes of the East Asian winter monsoon from high-latitudes (i.e., ice volume) and the East Asian summer monsoon from both high-latitudes and low-latitudes (i.e., tropical Pacific).

Fluctuations in the late Quaternary East Asian winter monsoon recorded in sediment records of surface water cooling in the northern Japan Sea

AbstractThe East Asian monsoon climate system involves interactions between land and ocean and is composed of summer and winter monsoons. Cooling of surface water by the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) promotes the formation of sea ice and deep water in the northern Japan Sea. Modern observations suggest close relationships between intensification of the EAWM and both sea ice formation and sea‐surface temperature (SST) decrease in the northeastern Japan Sea. Records of ice‐rafted debris (IRD) and alkenone‐based SST in the northeastern Japan Sea are examined to clarify the temporal variability of the EAWM and its controlling factors. Close relationships with oxygen isotope records of Chinese stalagmites and Northern Hemisphere summer insolation are observed in the records of IRD occurrence and SST during Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 3–5. The co‐occurrence of maxima in the abundance of IRD and minima in SST in the northeastern Japan Sea indicates that the intensity of the EAWM was enhanced during periods of low summer insolation and high oxygen isotope ratios in Chinese stalagmites. Decoupling between the IRD and SST records during MIS 2 and MIS 6 might be the result of differences in surface water conditions caused by low sea levels and the resultant closure of the Tsushima Strait. During MIS 3 and 4, some small but clear maxima in IRD and minima in SST occurred at relatively low summer insolation periods. Some of these peaks co‐occur with North Atlantic Heinrich events, suggesting a possible climate linkage between the North Atlantic and the Asian monsoon. The presence of finer fluctuations in the occurrence of IRD than in summer insolation suggests finer millennial–centurial timescale fluctuations in the intensity of the EAWM. Furthermore, some IRD peaks occurred during periods of high insolation, such as 39, 86, 103, 128, 145, and 153 ka. Some of these IRD peaks correlate with minima in reconstructed SST and maxima in oxygen isotope ratios of Chinese stalagmites. This result suggests that extremely cold winters occur even during periods of enhanced East Asian summer monsoon intensity, and indicates that solar insolation is not the only factor that controls variations in the intensity of the EAWM at millennial–centurial timescales.
