An Undergraduate Fisheries Curriculum

Abstract Trends in the profession of fisheries science are explored and projected as far as possible. Although there is a slowdown in the rate of expansion of the fisheries profession, it seems inevitable that the profession will continue to rapidly expand in the long run. Professional fisheries scientists judged English rhetoric and report writing to be the most important set of undergraduate courses taken, with quantitative sciences a close second. It seems that fisheries science as a profession is large enough to justify more undergraduate specialization.

Bacon's new English rhetoric and the debt to Aristotle

Though the scope of Aristotle's Rhetoric is at once broader and more limited than Bacon's theory, the Englishman owes most of his primary rhetorical doctrines to his predecessor. The two philosophers agree on the nature and general function of rhetoric, its place among the arts and sciences, its psychological basis, and the use to which it puts logical, ethical, and pathetic proofs. Some of Aristotle's hints are expanded by Bacon, mainly those regarding the philosophical style, and Bacon often corrects what he takes to be inconsistencies and errors in Aristotle's work. Moreover, because he looks to the past only for material to change and augment, Bacon does original and important new things to Aristotle as he re‐works him for a new English rhetoric.

The Eloquence of Churchill

The Editors have suggested that this latest collection of Mr Churchill's be reviewed purely as examples of eloquence. My pleasure in consenting was due only in part to admiration for the Prime Minister's character, methods and oratory: quite as strong was the conviction that a detailed appraisal of artistry in speech might be not only interesting of itself but also serviceable as a protest against the widespread neglect, not to say derision into which genuine eloquence is falling. Again and again we hear that “eloquence is out of fashion,” and the level of oratory in the British House of Commons has become a byword. Even Mr Churchill's achievement, though it enjoys the immense yet partly irrelevant advantage that it deals with matters of unique moment, seems likely to suffer in some degree from the current distaste for nobility in public speaking. One of our most excellent war-commentators, Mr Raymond Gram Swing, has perpetrated an ineptitude which the publishers have seen fit to print on the jacket of this volume. “Nothing quite so much misses the importance of Mr Churchill's speeches as to say that they are examples of superb English rhetoric. What makes his speeches invaluable is not their technique. It is what he has to tell.” Such a pronouncement hardly deserves refutation: on these lines, any truthful and clear report of events, which a thousand living journalists could produce, equals any oration here printed.

Uncle Sam and the Compounding of Words

A LTHOUGH the proper compounding of words is one of the essentials of good writing and good printing, there is probably no phase of English rhetoric which has been more universally neglected. The resulting confusion of thought and inconsistency of practice with regard to compound words have become so appalling that Uncle Sam, in recent years, has made a very great effort to set an official standard for his own use. His latest, most complete, and most rational system is the one that is incorporated in the Style Manual of the Department of State.* This system is a development and rearrangement of the system first enunciated in the Style Manual of the Government Printing Office for 1933, and in many respects is identical with it. The principal differences between the two systems are that the fundamental grammatical element in compounding is clearly brought out in the Department system and that all the rules in that system conform absolutely with the general principles as stated. The present article therefore is concerned entirely with the Department system. Uncle Sam has emphasized the two distinct problems always involved in compounding, and the Department system is so organized as to solve those two problems in the logical order here given: (1) Is compounding necessary? (2) If so, should the compound word be hyphened or solid?
