ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE EDMODO USAGE IN LEARNING ACTIVITIES FOR ENGLISH LITERATURE STUDENTS

The increment of concern in the use of online learning tools into English Language Teaching to adopt the Industrial Revolution 4.0 has inspired this study to examine students’ thoughts on Edmodo, as one of the online learning tools, at the English Literature department within the University of Bangka Belitung. Edmodo is used by the researchers to discuss the students’ attitude in improving their English skills. Data were collected by means of questionnaires and interview. A Likert scale questionnaire was administered and open-ended interviews were conducted to get more information from the students. Data were qualitatively and quantitatively analysed by using SPSS v.22 Software. The results reveal that the Edmodo usage is aiding students’ cooperation in small group discussions, reflecting that teaching and learning activities established on the ground of communicative teaching method were able to improve cooperation and communication, raising students’ motivation to take part and involve in various learning and also empowering them to be self-determining and be more responsible for their own learning. This study is an endeavor to attract more researchers to do further investigations on this area within the Indonesian English learners at the university level.

INSTRUCTOR LEADERSHIP IN EFL CLASSROOMS AND THE OUTCOMES: THE EFFECTS OF TRANSFORMATIONAL AND TRANSACTIONAL LEADERSHIP STYLES

In this study, classroom leadership styles of English language instructors were investigated within the Full Range Leadership (FRL) framework with the purpose of determining the relationship between instructors’ leadership styles and the outcomes of leader (the instructor in the classroom context) effectiveness, students’ extra effort and student satisfaction. Classroom Leadership Instrument, a modified version of Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire, was administered to 300 students from English Language Teaching and English Language and Literature Departments at a Turkish state university. Research data were analyzed through inferential statistical tests and the results revealed that transformational leadership and active traits of transactional leadership significantly correlated with all three leadership outcomes. Consequently, the instructors with such leader characteristics appeared to be more effective teachers, whose students felt more satisfied with their teaching and displayed extra effort at a higher extent in the courses.

COMPREHENSION STRATEGIES OF LITERARY TEXTS USED BY UNIVERSITY OF JORDAN LITERATURE STUDENTS

Reading plays a significant role in our daily lives. Literary readers build their worlds and expand their imagination with deviating from the literal words to create images that make sense to them in the unfamiliar places the texts describe. This study examined the most useable strategies among English language and literature students at the University of Jordan as well as whether there are significant differences between males and females in this regard. Methodology: This study employed both descriptive and quantitative approaches to collect data. The sample was selected using simple random sampling. The sample of the study was 120 EFL bachelor students divided into 60 males and 60 females from UJ. SPSS program was used in the data analysis. The research instrument was a questionnaire designed by the researcher in accordance with the study questions. SPSS social package was used to treat the collected data through multiple regression, T-test, and descriptive analyses. Result: The data analysis showed that the most usable strategies were personal growth model, cooperative learning, intensive reading, illustration, cultural model, but that doesn’t mean those are the most effective on the reading ability of literary texts. It also indicated that there are only significant differences in the use of the cultural model and the personal growth model but there aren't any significant differences in the usage of the other mentioned strategies. Conclusion: It is recommended that the decision-makers should pay more attention to the literary texts that are provided to the university students while deciding the bachelor's syllabus. So that they should organize literary texts in combination with the most effective reading strategies. To help them to get rid of the expected difficulties of comprehending such texts. This study contributes to supply the future bachelor syllabuses planning of English language and literature department at the University of Jordan and other universities around.

Online Machine Translation: The Students’ Perspective during Quarantine Period Learning Activity

The role of internet nowadays leads to the increase of online translation usage. The online translation offers various kinds of machine translation besides the-popular- Google Translate. The purpose of this research is to determine the students’ perspective on online machine translation they can easily found on internet related to the learning process on translation study during the quarantine period.. The research questions are; 1) What are the good sides of using online machine translation? 2)What are the shortages of using online machine translation? 3)How does online machine translation help students during learning activities on quarantine period? Online machine translation is automated translation or “translation carried out by a computer” with the internet connection. The subjects of this study were 6th semester students at English Literature Department of Universitas Ngudi Waluyo who had taken subjects related to translation. The research was conducted by delivering survey with google form to gather students’ perspectives. From the results, it is concluded that students were familiar with Google Translation as the online machine translation. Students stated that online machine translation often gives ambiguous translation. The use of online machine translation is helpful especially in terms of saving time. In conclusion, to keep up with the development of digital era, students need to be introduced to various online machine translation to help them work faster and keep improving their translation skill to back up the defects of online machines translation.

An Analysis of Students’ Difficulties in Listening Comprehension: A Descriptive Study at English Language and Literature Department FBS UNP

This research was aimed to find out the difficulties that mostly faced by students in listening comprehension and the factors which cause the difficulties at English language and literature department FBS UNP. This study employed descriptive qualitative research method. The subjects of this research were K-2 Class which consists of 32 students selected by using cluster sampling technique. The data was collected from questionnaire and interview. The researcher distributed the questionnaire to all members of the class. After that, the researcher chose six students to be interviewed. The results of this study showed that the difficulties that the students faced in listening comprehension were related into three categories, they were the listening material, the listener, and the physical setting. Besides, the factors which cause students’ difficulties in listening comprehension were depend on others, shame to ask the lecturer about the material, having emotional disturbances, the lecturer explains the material too quickly, lack of reward and reinforcement, and unfocused.

Competition in the world of tertiary education is currently so rapidly. Both for public and private colleges. The government also began to apply certain standards to improve the university competence. English Literature Department at Dharma Andalas University, one of the private universities in Padang, is aware of this competition. One of the ways to get victory in inter-university competitions is to improve the service facilities that provided the students to gain satisfaction in addition for increasing other things. Research conducted on the relationship between service facilities provided by the English Literature Department and student satisfaction turned out that only a small proportion considered the existence of a relationship. This study uses a quantitative verification approach using descriptive and clear survey methods. Regression analysis is used to analyze data which referring to SPSS version 16. The result of this research is 34.48% of participants assume that reliability is the highest mean value, so it can be concluded that the aspect of reliability is the most influential aspect in the formation of the satisfaction felt by students for academic services provided by the English Literature Department at the Dharma University of Andalas Padang

Creating Your Animated Stories with Plotagon: Implementation of Project-Based Learning in Narrative Writing

In English as foreign language learning, writing is considered to be challenging since it requires more complex thinking than other language skills. Along with technology advancement, writing learning can embed technology to provide more learning opportunities. Therefore, this study seeks to investigate the benefits of the implementation of project-based learning in teaching narrative writing in university. By involving 40 students of the English Literature Department, Plotagon (a 3D animation-making software) was used in the ‘Imaginative Writing’ course to mediate a project that required students to visualize their own story in the form of animated films. This study employed a qualitative research method with a case study design. The results revealed that there were three benefits of implementation of project-based learning (PBL) in teaching writing: (1) PBL was a fun and humanistic learning assignment; (2) PBL provided the opportunity for students to learn in a real context; and (3) Plotagon was an appropriate application to mediate students in improving their multiliteracy abilities. As a pedagogical implication, PBL is a potential method to be implemented in a variety of learning styles, which can accommodate a variety of intelligence of each student in the future. https://doi.org/10.26803/ijlter.18.12.19

The Relationshıp Between Afghanistan EFL Students’ Academic Self-Efficacy and English Language Speaking Anxiety

This study aimed at investigating the relationship between EFL students’ academic self-efficacy beliefs and their English language speaking anxiety at a public university in Afghanistan. A number of 202 students from two different English Language and Literature Departments participated in this study. Two sets of questionnaires were used to collect data in this study. The obtained results revealed that the participants’ both levels of self-efficacy beliefs and their speaking anxiety were rather high. A significant positive correlation was also found between the participants’ self-efficacy beliefs and their English language speaking anxiety. In addition, the two Departments’ students were compared in terms of self-efficacy beliefs and speaking anxiety. The study is concluded with two recommendations for future research and English language teachers to focus more on English language speaking anxiety and be more empathic to students while teaching English language speaking skill.

Learning while teaching: Student teachers’ reflections on their teaching practicum

Learning while teaching: Student teachers’ reflections on their teaching practicum Teaching practicum of English language teachers has been the heart of many studies in the recent years. However, most of those studies focused on the graduates of teacher training programs. In Turkey, graduates of English Language and Literature (ELL) departments are also qualified to be an English teacher as long as they have a teaching certificate given by the universities after an intensive program called as pedagogical formation. This study focused on the teacher candidates, who are graduates of ELL programs. More specifically, it aimed to investigate what those teacher candidates think they have learned through their intensive and short teaching practicum experience and the challenges they have met. For this purpose, the study adopted qualitative research methodology and 8 participants took part in the study. The data were collected via reflective journals and semi-structured questionnaires and were analyzed through thematic content analysis. Results indicated that student teachers’ learning outcomes could be grouped under three themes such as pedagogical strategies, developing professional identity and developing positive feelings whereas the challenges could be grouped under four themes such as classroom management, time management, mixed ability classes and difficulties in using technology. Based on the findings, some recommendations were yielded. Communication Strategies in English Second Language Acquisition

This research aims to describe and analyze communication strategies used by learners in the acquisition of a second language. In this case, this research analyzes the use of communication strategies in which English is the language of instruction.This study involved 21 students at the Department of English Language and Literature, in one of the state universities in Semarang, Indonesia. These students are second year students in the English Language and Literature Department. This research is a case study in the purpose of investigating the communication strategies used when the participants are engaged when the learning activities take place. The participants are given a conversation project in pairs and exposed to a variety of setting such as in the restaurant, in the professor’s room, and in a company. Data collection was carried out through video and audio recordings. The data obtained are then categorized into 13 categories of communication strategies (Dornyei, 1995) and sorted to obtain the frequency of occurrence. The findings indicate that the students mostly use time-gaining strategy (36%) to overcome the problem in their communication with the interlocutors. It is then followed by the use of meaningless words which occurs very frequently (18%) from all utterances, “repetition” strategy which occurs rather frequently about 16% of the total, literal translation (13%), and “use of non-linguistics means” (10%). In conclusion, choices of communication strategies are highly influenced by the level of the conversation tasks given (Wongsawang, 2001). The occurrence of certain types of communication strategies depends on the tasks given to the students and the level of difficulty of those tasks.

THE ANALYSIS OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES USAGE FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING AND LEARNING AT UNIVERSITAS BANGKA BELITUNG

The use of Information Technologies (IT) tools has become very important requirements for teachers and students nowadays in achieving academic goals in higher education. The harness of computers, internet, e-mail, multi-media and other IT tools is indispensable and has a great influence on the process of language teaching and learning in an effort to improve the quality of education and to produce best human resources that not only having good competence in foreign language but also possessing great capabilities in the use of Information Technology to face the Industrial Revolution 4.0 era. The study seeks to find out the frequency and the purposes of IT usage by students and lecturers in the English learning environment. A questionnaire containing questions about the frequency and the use of IT in the teaching and learning process was disseminated to the students and the lecturers of the English Literature department at the University of Bangka Belitung. The study reveals that the lecturers and students show a positive attitude towards the use of IT tools and the harness of the tools in the process of teaching and learning is believed to be very useful.

ERRORS IN PRONOUNCING ENGLISH PHONEMES: A PRAAT ANALYSIS

This article is concerned with a study of pronunciation errors made by students of English Literature Department, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, University of Sumatera Utara. The scope is limited to the study of error analysis in the pronunciation of English phonemes. The participants of this study were two students of the department with Acehnese background. In this study, the electronic software called Praat was used as an instrument in the analysis of speech sounds of the participants. The purpose of this study was to find out the dominant errors of the pronunciation of English phonemes made by the participants. The data were derived from the pronunciations of English phonemes which were recorded and transcribed in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) as in Katamba (1996: 13). The standard value of the pronunciation of English phonemes was adopted from Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary. The quality of the pronunciations of the participants was described in graphs and the results were shown in percentage as given in tables and charts.

Corrective Feedbacks and Grammar Teaching in a Situated Teaching Context of Process-Based Writing

This study was aimed at finding out 1) how learners in a specific teaching-learning context namely process-based academic essay writing perceived the importance of corrective feedbacks (CF); 2) what CF was expected the most; 3) in what way learners preferred to have their CF provided; and 4) how learners perceived the importance of grammar teaching. It was conducted at English Literature Department of a university in Central Java Indonesia. Forty two students who were taking Essay Writing course served as the subjects for the study. The course itself was delivered in a process-based writing in which content development and rhetoric were given more emphasis than grammar accuracy was. Data for the study were collected by questionnaire and a semi-structured interview with 5 guided questions. The findings suggest that learners still considered CFs as highly important and useful for their writing improvement. Learners expected to have comprehensive CFs of grammar, vocabulary, spelling, organization and punctuation, and CF on grammar was the most preferred one. In terms of CF provision technique, underlying and making notes were the most preferred techniques. Finally, this study concludes that the shift of approach from a product-based to a process-based did not significantly change learners’ focus from forms to content.

THE INFLUENCE OF EVALUATION ON STUDENTS’ MOTIVATION TO LEARN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Motivation has inspired а lot of authors to identify its characteristics. It has also inspired students and teachers to learn and teach foreign languages through its different types and provide different results in teaching and learning the language. This is closely connected to how evaluation has the potential to influence students and motivate them to learn a foreign language and how teachers should find easier or more difficult ways of evaluating them depending on what kind of motivation is involved during the class. This paper deals with the issue of how different evaluation methods provide opportunities for students to meet different motives. The students do that by answering a questionnaire, which is the initial hypothesis of it. The target groups are third year students, 15 of each one, from the departments of English language and literature, German language and literature, and Macedonian language and literature at the Faculty of Philology, Goce Delcev University – Stip. The students answer 15 questions concerning the different methods they are evaluated by. They provide their answers by answering the questions and they give their opinion about the different types of evaluation methods. The results are used to give us an insight into the influence of the different evaluation methods on students’ motivation, so we can see whether they are actually the main reason why students learn or do not learn foreign languages and an inspiration to teachers to be familiar with which types of evaluation methods decrease or increase the level of motivation while learning a foreign language. As a result of that they are able to use those methods in future in order to improve the level of foreign language knowledge that the students should possess and gain.

Austen’s Cosmopolitanism: Women and the World in Austen’s Fiction

ABSTRACTDespite the fact that Edward Said’s reading of Mansfield Park (1814) is over twenty years old, his claim that Jane Austen’s novel provides implicit support for slavery in the Caribbean continues to be a divisive topic among scholars. In this essay I will consider some of the most important postcolonial readings of Austen’s work before proposing a new way of understanding her fiction in its global nexus. As I will argue, Mansfield Park represents the ways in which women can gain independence through the inculcation of global knowledge, while Sanditon (1817) and its portrayal of a wealthy, “half-mulatto”, West-Indian heiress, creates an elision between exploitative economics in the Caribbean and gender relations at home. In her consideration of the conjuncture between deficiencies in both domestic and colonial governance Austen, as I will demonstrate, initiates a fledgling cosmopolitan discourse in which female liberty, slavery and colonial conduct converge to form a sophisticated debate. James M. Morris graduated with a PhD from the University of Glasgow in 2016 with a thesis entitled, “Beyond Orientalism: ‘The Stranger’ and ‘Colonial Cosmopolitanism’ in the Romantic-Period Novel.” He is currently teaching in the English Literature departments at the Universities of Glasgow and Dundee.

Views of university instructors and students on English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) and World Englishes (WES)

The rapid proliferation of English as a medium of communication has sparked large-scale debate on the role of English and the terminology in order to define various concepts, such as ELF, WE, EIL, etc. The paradigms of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) and World Englishes (WEs) are sometimes considered to be confusing to differentiate between, and in addition these terms are often used interchangeably. In order to obtain the perceptions of the instructors and students towards ELF and WEs, a questionnaire was implemented in a state university. The questionnaire consisted of both close-ended and open-ended questions and the research encompasses qualitative and quantitative data. The participants were 44 English Instructors and 104 students of the English Language and Literature Department. The instructors of English ranged in age between 23 to 51 and the students were aged 18 to 25. The total number of participants was 148.

The Interconnection of Motivation and Self Regulated Learning Among University Level EFL Students

The main aim of this research is to investigate learners in higher education in a Turkish context, in terms of motivational components such as goal orientation, self efficacy, intrinsic value, test anxiety and self-regulated learning components such as cognitive strategy usage and self regulation. The study was carried out with 233 students in higher education enrolled in the English Language and Literature department. Descriptive, variance and correlation analyses were carried out to answer the research questions. The results showed that the participants were reported to have satisfactory level of goal orientation, self efficacy, intrinsic value, test anxiety, cognitive strategy usage and self regulation. ANOVA results indicated that there were statistically significant differences between the three types of students, regular (daytime), evening, and distance education, with regard to goal orientation and self-efficacy. Furthermore, correlation analysis suggested that there was a moderate level of correlation between self-regulation and cognitive strategy usage. This research on the whole, infers that self-regulated learning means empowering the student to take charge of their motivation and educational pathway, and that while doing so, teachers should keep in mind that the classroom remains a formal environment that still requires self-efficacy and self-regulation and these are all interrelated.

The relationship between self-efficacy and the duration of students� final project writing completion

This study is aimed at finding out the relationship between self-efficacy and the duration of students' final project writing�commonly reffered as skripsi-completion. It was a correlational study involving 33 students of English Education and English Literature departments of the College of Languages and Communication Science of Sultan Agung Islamic University (UNISSULA) Semarang who were taken purposively as samples for the study. Data were collected by questionnaire of self-efficacy and a respondent-fill-form to collect �data on the duration the final project completion. The result of the analysis showed that students� self-efficacy and the duration of their final project writing completion was correlated positively at 0.994. This implies that students with high self-efficacy would likely complete the final project earlier than those with lower self-efficacy.
