Graft copolymerization onto a solid polymer surface is an effective tool for its modification. A large number of works have been published and require systematization. A search and review of English-language scientific literature devoted to the graft copolymerization of acrylic monomers onto a polymeric solid-phase surface have been carried out. Grafting onto plates and films, as well as fibers and colloidal particles, is considered. It has been revealed that the most popular substrates for graft copolymerization are, besides polyethylene, propylene and polyethylene terephthalate; polyurethanes, polyfluoroethylenes, rubbers, etc. Graft polymerization mainly proceeds on amorphous areas of the substrate and does not destroy the crystalline phase. It is possible to use the methods of controlled radical polymerization (ATRP, RAFT). Of the acrylic monomers, acrylic and methacrylic acids, glycidyl acrylate and glycidyl methacrylate, and others have been used, while the main method has been UV photopolymerization with an initiator–benzophenone. Of the three aliphatic ketones (acetone, methyl ethyl ketone and methyl propyl ketone), acetone has been the best solvent. Cophotoinitiators have been also used (a synergistic effect was observed), corona discharge, gamma radiation (60Co), ozone and plasma treatment, and a supercritical CO2 medium. The degree of grafting has been controlled by changing the soaking time in the monomer, pressure, concentration of monomer and initiator in the liquid phase, reaction temperature and reaction time. A new technology of graft polymerization with photopatterning has also been proposed. Problems of graft polymerization in terms of surface modification of polymer materials (hydrophilization of the surface, improving paintability and wettability, enhancing adhesion to certain surfaces, biocompatibility) are touched upon, and possible areas of their application are outlined.

Prevention and early detection of the most aggressive skin cancer: melanoma

Skin cancers are the most common cancers and they are divided into two types: melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSCs). Melanoma is the most lethal and aggressive type of skin cancer. The incidence of this type of cancer is increasing. Mortality from melanoma can be reduced by avoidance of exposure to ultraviolet radiation and regular skin examination. Materials and methods of research English-language scientific literature available in the PubMed and Google Scholar databases was reviewed using the following keywords: ”melanoma”; ”early-detection”; ”self-screening”; ”tanning”; ”sunscreen”; ”dermatoscopy”; ”mortality”; ”prevention”; ”risk-factors”; ”UV protection”; ”epidemiology”. Aim of the study The purpose of this narrative review is to present risk factors, prevention and the importance of early detection of melanoma. This review also shows that it is possible to increase people's awareness of skin self-examination and the importance of UV protection through the use of modern technology (text messaging). Conclusions There are many risk factors for melanoma. People's awareness of the risks of UV exposure from both sunbathing and tanning beds is increasing. More and more people are starting to protect themselves from the sun and regularly check their skin. This behavior reduces the risk of developing melanoma and increases the chances of detecting melanoma in its early stages.

The acquisition of foreign science and technology literature resources in specialized libraries amidst the challenges posed by science and technology blockade

Confronted with significant challenges in procuring foreign scientific and technological literature resources due to a global science and technology blockade, professional libraries are facing severe limitations imposed by the United States on China. These export control measures have severely hampered domestic scientific research institutions and universities from accessing foreign scientific and technological documents, thereby impeding China's progress in the field of scientific and technological innovation. To effectively address this predicament and enhance the ability to secure resources of foreign language scientific and technological literature, professional libraries should focus on the following five aspects: Firstly, diversify funding sources while expanding channels for procuring foreign periodicals; Secondly, increase procurement of English-language scientific and technological literature from non-American countries while organizing and categorizing these materials; Thirdly, strengthen access to non-English language scientific journals; Fourthly, promote collaborative construction and sharing of scientific and technological documents; Fifthly, develop localized versions of foreign digital resources. Ultimately, it is emphasized that bolstering one's own capabilities is key to overcoming barriers in accessing scientific and technological literature. Therefore, China should prioritize national-level development of digital academic platforms.

Use of arthroscopy in management of tibial plateau fractures

Introduction Tibial plateau fractures are periarticular injuries of the proximal tibia often associated with soft tissue injury. They account for 1-2% of all fractures. Their impact on the articular surfaces and the development of osteoarthritis make them an interesting research topic in the orthopaedic field. With the development of arthroscopic treatment methods, many are thinking of ways to incorporate less invasive methods in the reduction and fixation of these injuries. Review methods English-language scientific literature found in PubMed and Google Scholar was used for the review. Articles were searched based on keywords. Each article was analyzed for knowledge currency and relevance for use in the review. Description of the State of Knowledge After searching the articles, 35 articles were selected for final analysis. The collected data provided the latest information on treatment of tibial plateau fractures (TPF) using arthroscopic tools with studies diving deep into both the technique and longer-term results. The Biological Properties of Bacterial Toxins

Knowledge of the biological properties of bacterial toxins is constantly being updated. Over the past two decades, the research interest has shifted from natural toxins to their genetically modified derivatives. The purpose of the work is to summarize the knowledge of the biological properties of bacterial toxins accumulated in the English-language scientific literature in recent years. The research method is analytical. The source base for the research is Englishlanguage scientific literature, accessible through the global Internet. Results. The work examines: the organization and general mechanism of action of bacterial toxin molecules; the reliability of their toxicity indicators given in the scientific literature; toxic effects of toxins of various groups, differing in their mechanism of action; obtaining hybrid and modified toxins; identification of artificial toxins. Conclusions. Among bacterial toxins, binary toxins are the most dangerous. The binary composition of bacterial exotoxins, a good understanding of their subunits, functional domains, assembly mechanisms and intracellular action, make it possible to modify them in the direction of changing the range of targets, toxicity, mechanism of damaging action and immunogenicity. To identify genetically modified toxins, poorly studied analogues and isoforms of natural toxins, special programs based on machine learning can be used.

NIMBY or YIMBY? Understanding the complex relationships between foreign military bases and host societies

Abstract Based on a scoping review of English-language scientific literature for the period of 1990–2022, the article presents a synthetic outline of previous research, focusing on factors influencing the specifics of foreign military bases (FMBs) as examples of facilities that mostly generate negative attitudes known as ‘Not In My Backyard’ (NIMBY). The specific characteristics of different categories of objects that generate various social attitudes are also presented. The results of the analyses include a classification of factors and aspects related to the local impacts of foreign military bases, which have not been analysed before.

The Barriers of Conducting Medical Research in Saudi Arabia: A Review

Research is a crucial component of scientific and medical progress, generating new information and advancing healthcare knowledge. In the context of Saudi Arabia, it is essential for healthcare professionals and students to engage in research activities to stay current and improve patient care. This study explores the attitudes, knowledge, and barriers faced by healthcare professionals in Saudi Arabia regarding research analysis and writing. Method: A comprehensive literature search was conducted, focusing on English-language scientific literature published between August and September 2023, primarily through PubMed, Embase, Google Scholar, and the Saudi Digital Library. Reports written in English related to research in Saudi Arabia were considered for analysis. Result: The study identifies several barriers faced by Saudi healthcare workers in research, including issues like time constraints, lack of mentoring, and inadequate knowledge. The attitude and knowledge toward publishing research among medical residents were found to be suboptimal, with some individuals reporting low knowledge and unacceptable attitudes. Challenges such as the research approval process, heavy workloads, and gender disparities in research participation were also highlighted. Conclusion: Overcoming barriers to research and promoting a research culture is crucial for strengthening the scientific value of Saudi Arabia. By addressing the identified obstacles and implementing recommended measures, Saudi Arabia can contribute to the global research community and achieve its Vision 2030 goals, particularly in the healthcare sector.

Ankylosing Spondylitis: Review of Clinical Features, Diagnosis, and Treatment

Introduction 
 Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disorder affecting the spine and joints, leading to significant physical impairment. With a prevalence of 0.1-1.4%, AS holds significance in healthcare and socioeconomic contexts, therefore a thorough understanding is crucial for diagnosis and effective management. This article provides a current state of knowledge of the subject for clinicians and patients.
 
 Review methods
 English-language scientific literature found in PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar and Wiley databases (2015-2023) was used for the review. Articles were searched based on keywords. Each article was analysed for knowledge currency and relevance for use in the review.
 
 Description of the State of Knowledge
 After searching the articles, 20 articles were selected for final analysis. The data collected provides the latest information on ankylosing spondylitis.The etiology of AS has a strong association with the HLA-B27 antigen and research is being conducted on the association with HLA-15, IL-1, IL-23R, ERAP-1 and ERAP-2. Clinical manifestations include a broad spectrum of symptoms involving the musculoskeletal, ocular, respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and psychiatric systems. Specific diagnostic guidelines have been published by ASAS and EULAR. Treatment includes NSAID, GCS and biologic drug therapy.
 
 Summary
 AS, with its complex etiology and diverse clinical manifestations, presents a diagnostic challenge to clinicians. The variable prognosis and complex treatment in AS requires physicians to continually update their knowledge.Early diagnosis and treatment initiation can improve the patient's prognosis.

Can we increase the value of data from bladder diaries? International Consultation on Incontinence-Research Society 2023.

Bladder diaries represent a fundamental component in the assessment of patients presenting with lower urinary tract symptoms. Nevertheless, their importance often remains underappreciated and undervalued within clinical practice. This paper aims to conduct a comprehensive review of the existing literature concerning the utility of bladder diaries, underscore the criticality of their precision, elucidate the factors contributing to noncompliance with bladder diary completion, and investigate potential strategies for enhancing patient compliance. A review of the English-language scientific literature available in the domains of Medline, Embase, Emcare, Midirs, and Cinahl was conducted. This was supplemented by discussion at the International Consultation on Incontinence Research Society Proposal session to define knowledge and identify gaps in knowledge surrounding the utility of bladder diaries. The existing evidence and outcome of the relevant discussion held in the meeting are presented. Bladder diaries (BD) serve to characterize the nature and severity of storage lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and provide an objective record of an individual's urination patterns. They aid in the refinement and customization of treatment strategies based on the clinical responses documented in the diary, optimizing treatment outcomes. Notably, both BD and urodynamic studies (UDS) play complementary yet distinct roles in LUTS evaluation. BD offers a more comprehensive and accessible approach to assessing specific storage LUTS, particularly due to their affordability and widespread availability, especially in resource-limited settings. Nevertheless, the absence of a standardized BD format across global healthcare systems presents a significant challenge. Despite being recognized as reliable, noninvasive, validated, and cost-effective tools for evaluating patients with LUTS, the implementation and completion of BD have proven to be complex. The introduction of automated bladder diaries heralds an era of precise, real-time data collection, potentially enhancing the patient-clinician relationship. Completion of bladder diaries depends on an array of individual, social, and healthcare-specific factors. Compliance with bladder diary completion could be enhanced with clear instructions, patient education, regular follow-ups and positive re-enforcement. This study has identified four critical areas for future research: Addressing healthcare disparities between affluent and developing nations, enhancing the current functionality and effectiveness of bladder diaries, exploring the feasibility of incorporating bladder diaries into the treatment and education process and improving the quality and functionality of existing bladder diaries. Bladder diaries play a pivotal role in the evaluation and management of patients with LUTS, providing a holistic perspective. When their complete potential is harnessed, they have the capacity to revolutionize the paradigm of LUTS management, ushering in a patient-centered era of care.

Bibliometric Analysis of Educational Emigration Studies

Educational emigration from Russia often remains out of focus of both researchers and government officials. Nevertheless, this is one of the channels that, on the one hand, causes the outflow of a young and promising population, and on the other, connects our country with the world's leading scientific and economic centers. This article aims to identify gaps in the study of educational migration from Russia through a structured review of the scientific literature. The subject of the research is the trends in the study of educational migration in Russian-language and English-language scientific literature. The study proves the lack of an integrated approach to the educational migration research in relation to the relatively new concept of “intellectual diaspora”. Using the bibliometric method in combination with content analysis of metadata of articles from the Scopus and RSCI bibliographic databases, the author concludes that despite the obvious connection of these concepts, only a few works consider educational migrants from the point of view of the formation of such diasporas. The article also formulates the need to build a conscious state diaspora policy aimed not only at stimulating re-emigration, but also at other forms of interaction with representatives of national intellectual communities abroad. The limitations of the work are the selected time frame (2017–2022) and the object of research (articles from two bibliographic databases), which allow us to draw conclusions on trends in the study of educational migration in the past five years and identify promising areas of research in this area.

Recent highlights on passion fruit waste valorization: A review

In the present review, with the help of the descriptive method, some main highlights regarding the possibilities for the valorization of passion fruit waste are systematically presented. To the best of the author’s knowledge, there is still no published review in the English-language scientific literature that examines opportunities, prospects and challenges for the valorization of passion fruit waste. For the preparation of the current review, scientific publications referenced in some of the most authoritative world-renowned scientific databases were used (Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, Google Scholar); book chapters were not included. This review does not aim to cover, compile and describe all the scientific production available under the keywords “passion fruit waste”, but aims to highlight only some major research trends regarding the possibilities of valorization of passion fruit waste. Scientific articles that remained for technical or other reasons beyond the scope of the current review paper could be included in a subsequent updated review.

A modular systematic review of antenatal interventions targeting modifiable environmental exposures in improving low birth weight

BackgroundLow birth weight (LBW) increases the risk of short- and long-term morbidity and mortality from early life to adulthood. Despite research effort to improve birth outcomes the progress has been slow. ObjectiveThis systematic search and review of English language scientific literature on clinical trials aimed to compare the efficacy antenatal interventions to reduce environmental exposures including a reduction of toxins exposure, and improving sanitation, hygiene, and health-seeking behaviors, which target pregnant women to improve birth outcomes. MethodsWe performed eight systematic searches in MEDLINE (OvidSP), Embase (OvidSP), Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (Wiley Cochrane Library), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (Wiley Cochrane Library), CINAHL Complete (EbscoHOST) between 17 March 2020 and 26 May 2020. ResultsFour documents identified describe interventions to reduce indoor air pollution: two randomised controlled trials (RCTs), one systematic review and meta-analysis (SRMA) on preventative antihelminth treatment and one RCT on antenatal counselling against unnecessary caesarean section. Based on the published literature, interventions to reduce indoor air pollution (LBW: RR: 0.90 [0.56, 1.44], PTB: OR: 2.37 [1.11, 5.07]) or preventative antihelminth treatment (LBW: RR: 1.00 [0.79, 1.27], PTB: RR: 0.88 [0.43, 1.78]) are not likely to reduce the risk of LBW or Preterm birth (PTB). Data is insufficient on antenatal counselling against caesarian-sections. For other interventions, there is lack of published research data from RCTs. ConclusionsWe conclude that there is a paucity of evidence from RCT on interventions that modify environmental risk factors during pregnancy to potentially improve birth outcomes. Magic bullets approach might not work and that it would be important to study the effect of the broader interventions, particularly in LMIC settings. Global interdisciplinary action to reduce harmful environmental exposures, is likely to help to reach global targets for LBW reduction and sustainably improve long-term population health.

ONE DAY ONE ARTICLE (ODOA): HABITUATING READING COMPREHENSION SKILLS

This article explores quality habits that can be taught to non-English department students to improve their reading comprehension skills in English-language scientific literature. By using the theory and practice of reading comprehension, students are expected to be able to get used to reading scientific writings in English at a certain stage and time. This paper was developed using a qualitative approach based on data from grounded research that explores phenomena based on inductive studies which include reading theory, reading activity, and reading habit. This study found that students can increase their knowledge by understanding aspects of activities that become routine. These activities are inherent in the quantity and quality of reading activities. The results of this paper have implications for complex literacy mastery in supporting students' higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) as an academic need in the Society 5.0 era. This article proves that there is no barrier for non-English department students to be able to master reading skills from English texts by making quality reading habits.

Providing information about a child's oncological disease - a challenge for a pediatric oncologist

Introduction: The diagnosis of a serious illness in a family affects all members. The child is a special subject, as he cannot yet understand many aspects of life at such a high perceptual level as an adult. Communicating difficult information is part of the doctor's task and is one of the most difficult parts of the therapeutic process. 
 The aim of the study: To analyze the methodology of communicating difficult information to pediatric oncology patients.
 Material and method: Polish and English-language scientific literature from 2012 - 2022 from databases such as PubMed, SCOPUS, Google Scholar, Web of Science was reviewed. Searches were conducted according to keywords: communicating difficult information, oncology, pediatrics, physician.
 Results and conclusions: One of the most well-known protocols for communicating difficult information is SPIKES. It describes the basic and necessary steps for properly informing parents and the child about the diagnosis, for example. Healthy siblings should also learn about their brother's illness, but this task falls to the parents. Psycho-oncological support for both the child and parents should be holistic, based on best practices, and tailored to the family's needs.

Clinimetric methods for evaluating patients with Parkinson's disease in the context of the latest treatment strategies

Background: Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disease involving the deposition of alpha-synuclein deposits in dopaminergic neurons of the black matter, resulting in a decrease in dopamine levels in the central nervous system and the development of motor and non-motor symptoms. Aim of the study: This study aims to identify clinimetric methods for evaluating patients with Parkinson's disease in the context of contemporary therapies. Material and methods: English-language scientific literature from 2012 - 2022 from databases such as PubMed, SCOPUS, Web of Science, Google Scholar was reviewed. Searches were conducted according to keywords: Parkinson's disease, clinical evaluation, and treatment methods. 69 items of literature were qualified for analysis. Results and conclusions: The diagnosis of Parkinson's disease is a diagnosis by exclusion, there are no available and inexpensive methods to diagnose the disease with certainty. The clinimetric assessment of the patient is therefore the basis not only for diagnosis but also for effective, tailored treatment. There are many assessment tools dedicated to patients with this disease entity, and these are the ones recommended for this process. Contemporary treatment methods, especially for those in whom the effectiveness of pharmacological treatment is unsatisfactory, include deep brain stimulation, enteral infusion of DuoDopa®, and subcutaneous infusion/injections of apomorphine. The inclusion of the techniques depends mainly on the assessed condition of the patient.

НАЦИОНАЛЬНЫЕ ПРЕДМЕТНЫЕ ОЛИМПИАДЫ В КИТАЕ: ТРАДИЦИИ И ИННОВАЦИИ

The Olympiad movement of schoolchildren is a ubiquitous driver of the search for talented young people and an international pedagogical phenomenon. The study of national experience in the implementation and preparation for school subject olympiads in China is the goal of our study, the relevance of which is determined by both the mass participation of Russian schoolchildren in intellectual competitions and the dominant role of Chinese teams in international olympiads in natural science disciplines. The approaches used in the study, on whose principles we relied: systemic, activity, cultural. Among the theoretical methods we apply are the study of domestic and English-language scientific literature on the topic, generalization of ideas, categorization. At the empirical level, we have studied the regulatory documents of the Chinese government in the field of education in English, which are publicly available for international scientific cooperation. Many sources were found in the Chinese database of research papers cnki.net. As a result of the study, the following features of the Olympiad movement in China were revealed: strict selection of applicants for national teams in various subjects, a multi-level dropout system for schoolchildren, the presence of training camps for the backbone of teams, from which participants in international competitions are determined (usually 6 people). Government support is implemented through the activities of the Chinese Association of Science and Technology. Despite the success of Olympiads, in recent years, the mass participation in China has decreased, since the Ministry of Education has banned directly accepting the winners of Olympiads to universities without specialized selection. In the Chinese tradition, successful contestants are perceived as “supernormal” teenagers with outstanding abilities, whose number a priori cannot be large. China’s success in economic and technological paths speaks of the effectiveness of educational technologies, which forces domestic teachers to analyze the eastern path of development of giftedness in school.

Experimental Methods for Studying the Contact Mechanics of Joints.

Biomechanics researchers often experimentally measure static or fluctuating dynamic contact forces, areas, and stresses at the interface of natural and artificial joints, including the shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees. This information helps explain joint contact mechanics, as well as mechanisms that may contribute to disease, damage, and degradation. Currently, the most common in vitro experimental technique involves a thin pressure-sensitive film inserted into the joint space; but, the film's finite thickness disturbs the joint's ordinary articulation. Similarly, the most common in vivo experimental technique uses video recording of 3D limb motion combined with dynamic analysis of a 3D link-segment model to calculate joint contact force, but this does not provide joint contact area or stress distribution. Moreover, many researchers may be unaware of older or newer alternative techniques that may be more suitable for their particular research application. Thus, this article surveys over 50 years of English-language scientific literature in order to (a) describe the basic working principles, advantages, and disadvantages of each technique, (b) examine the trends among the studies and methods, and (c) make recommendations for future directions. This article will hopefully inform biomechanics investigators about various in vitro and in vivo experimental methods for studying the contact mechanics of joints.

Piano sound phenomenon in English-language scientific discourse

Statement of the problem. The process of achieving an aesthetically appealing and artistically true piano sound has long been a subject of research for musicians. In recent decades, domestic performance practice has relied on this issue mostly on the professional literature created back in the Soviet period. But the process of integrating Ukrainian musical education and performance into the European and world cultural space requires the study of alternative sources, primarily English-language ones, that reflect the experience of performers in different countries of the world, as well as correlations and the introduction of relevant terminology into scientific and practical circulation. Analyzing recent publications, we established that the phenomenon of the piano in general and piano sound in particular is considered from different points in the works of J. Parakilas (2000), E. Hiebert (2013), V. Raad (1977), G. Fitch (2016a,b; 2022), Shen Li and R. Timmers (2021), M. Keane (2013), Chuan C. Chang (2009), I. Masters (2021), and others. The purpose of this article was to study the approaches to the phenomenon of piano sound available in the English-language scientific literature. For the first time, a number of Englishlanguage sources dedicated to the phenomenon of piano sound have been included in domestic scientific circulation. Systematic and comparative methods, as well as terminological analysis used in the study, made it possible to distinguish different contexts, in which the phenomenon of piano sound is presented in scientific discourse: performance-practical, psychological, historical, organological (due to the structural features of the instruments). Research results. One of the approaches to the study of the piano sound phenomenon is the study of the history of the piano, its place in European culture and its social functions, as in the work of J. Parakilas (2000), where the author describes the history of the functioning of the piano during the 18th–20th centuries. The sound of the piano in the historical, stylistic and organological contexts is considered by I. Masters (2021), who investigated the structural and sound features of the London and Viennese pianos (second half of the 18th century) and their influence on the specifics of the piano texture, structure of themes, articulation and stroke palette of the works of pianists and composers of the London and Vienna schools. A purely performance and practical perspective is found in Chuan C. Chang’s book (2009), which covers most aspects of piano playing. Another example of a purely practical approach to the study of piano sound is the articles by G. Fitch (2016a,b; 2022), where he considers the process of creating an aesthetically pleasing sound. Another perspective on piano sound and playing is interdisciplinary, where musicology interacts with acoustics, psychology, and physiology (Keane, 2013; Li, & Timmers, 2021). Conclusions. A review of professional sources shows that the piano sound in the modern English-language scientific discourse is considered as a complex multifaceted phenomenon. The main and special concepts describing the sound of the piano are “tone”, “voicing”, “layering”. The first two terms have an ambiguous interpretation: some authors understand the quality of the instrument’s sound as the result of the performer’s actions, others as a certain manner of playing, and others as, first of all, the character of the sound determined by the design and technical condition of the instrument.

The problem of tissue and organ transplantation in the light of the dogma of world religions

Background: Transplantation affects almost everyone, often affecting many almost directly, whether as donor or recipient. The presence of an incurable disease, failure, or irreversible damage to a particular organ leads the patient and his or her treatment team to seek effective life-saving methods, including the possibility of tissue or organ transplantation. The development of the field of transplantology has enabled many patients to continue living. Paradoxically, the death of one person can offer life to another. Aim of the study: To analyse the attitude towards transplantation about the dogmas of the main world religions. Material and method: A non-systematic review of Polish and English-language scientific literature was carried out according to keywords: transplantation, transplantology, religion, denomination, and attitude. No time or methodological limitation (quantitative, qualitative, etc.) was indicated to qualify publications for review. The following databases were searched: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Results and conclusions: The Catholic Church, the Protestant Church, the Orthodox Church, Islam, Judaism, and Jehovah's Witnesses do not directly oppose organ transplantation, although some denominations place certain conditions on the acceptance of transplantation. Gypsies, followers of Confucianism and Shintoism are opposed to performing transplants from deceased persons. The religions presented do not promote among their followers either to be donors or recipients of transplants. The level of transplantation worldwide varies. So far, there is a perception that undergoing this procedure is against one's religion and tradition.
