CHILDREN'S UNDERSTANDING OF ENGLISH VOCABULARY THROUGH VISUAL SEMIOTICS IN THE MUSIC VIDEO OPPOSITES WORD POWER BY PINKFONG YOUTUBE CHANNEL

The lack of English language skills and understanding in Indonesian primary school children is caused by many factors such as, limited teachers, unfamiliarity, unsupportive environment, and various other things. This is a challenge for individuals to learn English and teachers as teachers. In addition to the seriousness of children in learning English, the accuracy of the teacher in choosing the learning methods given to children must also be appropriate. In the current era of digitalization, learning methods through YouTube videos can have an impact on children's knowledge and understanding of English if implemented properly. In this case, learning English can be obtained by listening to videos that apply visual semiotics in it. The application of visual semiotics can be applied in teaching English to children from a video. The form of application can be like in the music video [Opposites Word Power | PINKFONG Songs for Children]. In this music video, explaining the opposite meanings of eight English vocabularies visualized in the form of icons and symbols. This research is descriptive research using a qualitative approach. The data collection conducted by the researchers used random sampling technique with ten public elementary school children aged 8, 9, and 10 years old as respondents. The data collection activities are carried out by asking questions related to knowledge and understanding of vocabulary in the music video to each children after the researchers show the YouTube music video [Opposites Word Power | PINKFONG Songs for Children]. The result of this study is to explain the extent of understanding of English vocabulary by children through visual semiotics displayed in the video. The results show that the icons and symbols displayed in the video mostly help the children understand the meaning of the English vocabulary displayed. This research also proves that visual semiotics is a sign whose meaning is universal so that it can be used as a learning method used by educators in teaching English in public elementary schools in Indonesia.

The Application of Comic-Based Learning Media in Elementary School English Subject

This study aims to analyze the effect of comic-based learning media on learning motivation and English comprehension of grade 4 students at SDS Permata Bangsa. The background of this study is the students' low interest in learning English caused by lack of motivation and less interactive learning media. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques through questionnaires and observation. The research subjects consisted of 12 grade 4 students with the duration of two learning sessions of 30 minutes each. The questionnaire was distributed at the end of session 2. The questionnaire consists of 9 likert scale statements followed by open-ended questions to provide reasons for each statement. The results showed that the use of comic media significantly improved students' motivation and English language skills. Students felt more motivated and enthusiastic in learning, and felt easier to understand the lessons. The comic incorporated two grammar: Simple Past Tense and Comparative along with vocabulary that focuses on names of animals. This study concludes that comic media can be an effective and interesting learning tool to increase students' motivation and understanding in learning English. Further research on the use of comics in inclusive classrooms are also indicated.

Enhancing English Learning for Elementary Students Through Children's Songs

Learning and teaching activities occur almost every day in the classroom between teachers and students. In this context, the process is usually thought of as the teacher delivering material to students while the students listen to the teacher's explanation. Learning in the classroom can occur if an interaction or synergy is created from various factors that support the teaching and learning process such as the presence of teachers, students, curriculum, teaching methods or techniques, teaching media and others. In this case, a learning activity is carried out to achieve learning objectives. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of using children's songs as a method of learning English in elementary schools. The research method used is qualitative research with a literature study approach. The research results show that the use of children's songs in English learning in elementary schools can increase students' motivation, strengthen their language skills, and facilitate enjoyable learning. Children's songs help students internalize English vocabulary, grammar and intonation more effectively. These findings provide important insights for the development of English language learning strategies that focus on students' active involvement. It is hoped that the results of this research can become a basis for developing a more innovative and student-oriented English language learning approach in elementary schools.

Improving elementary EFL speaking skills with generative AI chatbots: Exploring individual and paired interactions

Generative artificial intelligence (GAI) and automatic speech recognition (ASR) have ushered in promising tools for foreign language learning, notably GAI chatbots. This study investigated the impact of GAI chatbots on elementary school English as a foreign language (EFL) learners' speaking skills, focusing on two interaction configurations—individual and paired. Eighty-five elementary school EFL learners participated in a three-week summer program, engaging in daily 45-min interactions with CoolE Bot. The participants were randomly assigned to three groups: (1) individual interaction with CoolE Bot (I-Bot group), (2) paired interaction with CoolE Bot (P-Bot group), and (3) interaction with teachers and peers in a conventional English classroom (No-Bot group). In each class, participants in the Bot group received worksheets with a topic, prompts, and vocabulary to guide their interactions with CoolE Bot, while those in the No-Bot group also received worksheets for comparable activities. Quantitative (English-speaking tests) and qualitative data (semi-structured interviews) were collected and analyzed. Results revealed that the I-Bot and P-Bot groups' post-test speaking skills were significantly higher than those of the No-Bot group. CoolE Bot significantly improved the speaking skills of EFL learners. Both individual and paired interactions with CoolE Bot demonstrated positive effects, with no significant differences between groups. Interviews highlight CoolE Bot's adeptness in coherent interaction, charismatic conversational style with a human-like voice, diverse topic discussions tailored to learners' interests, and supportive functions. The participants found GAI chatbot-assisted EFL speaking enjoyable, motivating, and engaging appreciating its cartoonish, human-like characters, conversational style, and voice. Additionally, CoolE Bot fostered rapport and a supportive environment enhancing learners' confidence and reducing anxiety regarding EFL speaking. Individual interactions encourage personalized engagement and self-directed learning, whereas paired interactions involve social dynamics, shared learning experiences, and mutual resolution of language challenges.

Exploring Elementary School English Teachers' Voices in Gaining Students' Attention in Learning

Student attention plays a pivotal role in learning. It becomes the gateway to learning engagement, behavioral management, and academic achievement. This research investigates several methods elementary school teachers use in Indonesia to capture and maintain students' attention during English language instruction. This study examines the methods and challenges faced in the interaction process, which is crucial for successful learning. The research utilizes a qualitative descriptive study design, including in-depth interviews with three experienced English teachers. The findings indicate that teachers use many interactive and sensory-stimulating methods, including games, total physical response activities, songs, gestures, and visual aids, to attract and hold students' attention. These methods are essential for sustaining involvement and accommodating learning preferences and cultural contexts. However, teachers need more resources, training needs, and a diverse array of students' interests and learning styles, all of which might hinder the execution of these methods. This research emphasizes the need to provide teachers with customized training and resources to use attention-grabbing methods successfully. This study adds to the broader conversation on educational methods in linguistically and culturally diverse settings, indicating that improving teacher support and resources is crucial for promoting successful English language instruction at the elementary school level.

초등학교 영어과 최소성취기준 적용 연구

This research aims to apply the minimal achievement standards for elementary school English based on the 2015 revised national curriculum. The researchers conducted a comprehensive review of relevant literature, including foreign cases and domestic studies, on basic learning capability assessment. Based on the theoretical foundation, development direction, and development guidelines, we developed a draft of the example assessment questionnaires that focus on the minimal achievement standards of four language skills for sixth graders. We then refined the draft with consideration for the connection between the curriculum and the minimal achievement standards, the level of learners, and the feasibility of implementing it in the classrooms. The final draft was developed through an expert verification process. This study is expected to serve as a practical guide for developing basic learning capability assessment questionnaires based on the revised 2022 national curriculum.

A Practical Study on Improving the Professionalism of Elementary School English Teachers Based on Compulsory Education Testing

In the face of the ever-opening contemporary China, English has become an indispensable communication tool. Based on the results of basic education quality monitoring and existing research results on teacher professional quality, this paper investigates the professional quality of English teachers in representative primary school in Xi'an, examining the teachers’ professional quality in five dimensions, namely, the basic situation, professionalism, professional knowledge and professional abilities, and training status and conducting interviews with relevant teachers. Through the survey, it was found that elementary school English teachers in Xi'an have high professional ideals and good professionalism, have a high sense of teaching effectiveness, and have a good grasp of English education professional knowledge. The teachers' professional abilities basically meet the requirements of English teaching, and they hope to receive further regular training in teaching methods, skills training, and the ability to write papers. At the same time, some problems were also discovered: the gender ratio of teachers is disproportionate, and teaching philosophy is not fully implemented; teachers lack mastery of theoretical knowledge and scientific research knowledge, and their oral English expression still needs to be improved; parent resources cannot be better utilized; the adoption of teaching methods requires to be further improved, teaching methods need to be further improved; teachers’ scientific research capabilities are weak, etc. In view of the existing problems, the article puts forward suggestions for improving the professional quality of elementar school English teachers in Xi'an: strengthening teachers' professional emotional quality; deepening teachers' understanding of teaching concepts; strengthening the cultivation of teachers' professional knowledge and professional abilities; strengthening the cultivation of teacher's educational research ability.

A Content Analysis of Speaking Materials in English Textbook “My Next Words” used by Fifth Grade Elementary School

The aim of this study is to find out the quality of the materials in the English textbook for the fifth grade of primary school. The analysis of speaking sections from the elementary school English textbook is the main goal of this study. It was a descriptive research study that used quantitative data from textbook assessment scores that were gathered using a textbook evaluation sheet. The sheet's framework was created using theories by Bao (2013) about the constituting aspects of a good textbook and learning resource selection. The research revealed that the textbook's speaking material was sufficient. This indicates that the textbook's speaking materials fall short of the requirements outlined in the framework. Based on the research findings, the researcher proposed that the textbook's speaking materials should be enhanced. As a result, the textbook's content should be taken into consideration by both ELT teachers and textbook authors in light of Dat Bao's framework for the improvement of the materials

The Impact of Augmented Reality in English Learning in Elementary Schools

The role of language as the most important means of effective communication is universally recognized. In the context of education, students are expected to recognize the potential for acquiring English with the help of the media. Media is a tool for learning English. The use of media in learning English is minimal. The aim is to find out the results of applying augmented reality as a medium for learning English in elementary schools. The method in this research is mixed methods namely survey, observation, and documentation. The subjects of this study were a teacher and elementary school students in English subject. Data collection techniques, nonverbal in the form of pictures, assisted by recording techniques, with the listening method. Data collection instruments used questionnaires and interview sheets. Multimodal analysis techniques and interview results were collected, reduced, and concluded. The results of the study show that teachers can use learning media based on augmented reality in learning English well. There is an increase in student learning outcomes in English subjects after using augmented reality-based learning media. So, can be concluded that the increased satisfaction levels among educators and students, reflecting a more interesting and satisfying learning environment.

This study aimed to determine the improvement of speaking skills in English language learning in elementary schools. This research uses a qualitative approach with data collection tools in the form of literature studies. The conclusion is that learners' rejection of the teaching and learning process should be viewed as a "neutral" attitude, which is not related to good and bad values. The positive affective strategy is represented by four behaviors: laughter to show pleasure or satisfaction, smiling to show satisfaction, and showing pleasure because funny things are fun.

The implementation of high-quality education in elementary schools has led to changes in English teaching methods. To engage students and ensure effective teaching, innovative strategies are necessary. The situational teaching method provides students with relevant learning experiences but is not used routinely in Chinese elementary schools. Instructors often choose inappropriate contexts, resulting in students being overwhelmed and ineffective English learning. This thesis critically examines the challenges of situational teaching in elementary school English instruction and proposes practical recommendations. These include incorporating modern technology and improving instructors' situational assessment skills to enhance the effectiveness of situational teaching in elementary schools.

A Study on the Application of Picture Book Teaching in Elementary School English Teaching

Under the influence of the double reduction policy and new curriculum standards, the total number of classes has been reduced and the language competence has been put in great emphasis, English teaching is facing new challenges. This paper uses the literature research method and survey research method, choosing some primary school English teachers as the research target, to investigate the current picture book teaching situation and existing problems, according to that, several countermeasures are given. The research results suggest that many teachers are willing to choose picture books teaching in primary school English classrooms. However, there still exist problems such as a lack of innovation ability and a lack of thinking about the content of picture books. This paper proposes some countermeasures, such as regular teacher training and exchange meetings, and timely adjustment of English teaching classroom planning.

The effectiveness of gamification and artificial intelligence in increasing the motivation and effectiveness of students in learning English in elementary school

This study explores the impact of gamification and artificial intelligence (AI) on elementary school students’ motivation and effectiveness in learning English. A mixed-methods research design was employed, with an experimental group receiving English language instruction through gamified learning platforms supported by AI, while a control group received traditional instruction. Quantitative data collected through pre- and post-assessments demonstrated that the experimental group exhibited higher engagement, enjoyment, and intrinsic motivation, leading to improved language proficiency outcomes compared to the control group. Qualitative analysis revealed increased self-confidence, a sense of achievement, and a positive attitude towards learning English in the experimental group. The interactive and immersive nature of gamification, coupled with AI support, facilitated personalized learning experiences, fostering motivation and active participation. These findings highlight the potential of integrating gamification and AI in elementary school English language instruction to enhance motivation and effectiveness, emphasizing the importance of innovative approaches in educational settings.

The Issues of Teaching English in Elementary School Based on Students Engagement: Exploring Teachers’ Perspective

<p>The English-teaching problem is a significant issue that has been discussed in various contexts around the world, including English teachers’ issues, students’ assessments, curricula and textbooks, and the various variables that contribute to effective English as a foreign language (EFL) teaching. As a result, the purpose of the study is to explore 10 participants' perspectives on issues of teaching English in ELT classrooms. The purpose of this descriptive qualitative study is to investigate how teachers perceived the English teaching issue in relation to the students involved. Data were collected using an interview that included a single primary question about teaching English. Then, the data was analyzed by using content analysis. This study came to three major conclusions: (1) Learner motivation issues, (2) A problem with attitude, (3) An issue with the support system. Finally, problems with teaching English should not be underestimated because they have a significant impact on how well teachers teach the language in elementary schools. Teachers must be aware of their shortcomings in order to continually improve their teaching skills without becoming complacent.</p>

Barriers to Teaching English to Non-Native English-Speaking Teachers in Indonesian Secondary Schools: Policy Recommendations

<p style="text-align:justify">In the Indonesian context, English is considered a local subject and there is no mandated curriculum for English in elementary schools. Meanwhile, English has been a compulsory subject taught at the secondary school level. The present study aims to explore barriers to teaching English experienced by non-native English teachers in Indonesian secondary schools and policy recommendations. The study employed a qualitative case study method. Concerning the data collection, the authors garnered the data through semi-structured interviews with six non-native English teachers teaching at private and public secondary schools in Indonesia. The findings of the study reveal that several barriers experienced by non-native English teachers include lack of training in English teaching and learning, academic literacy among non-native English teachers, school facilities, English-relevant materials, student motivation, and English exposure outside of school. Drawing on these results, some policy recommendations to improve English language teaching in the Indonesian context are discussed in this study.</p>

The Implementation of Elementary School English Teacher With Non-English Educational Background Towards Pedagogical Content Knowledge

Abstract. At elementary schools in Bali, there were English teachers who taught English but did not have an English education background, included pedagogical content knowledge. Therefore, the aim of this research are to describe how are the teacher’s perception and implementation of pedagogical content knowledge in English learning for young learners and to compare the result of the perception and implementation by elementary school English teacher who do not have English educational background in Denpasar. The subject of this research was three English teachers in three different elementary schools in Denpasar with a non-educational English background that were selected using a convenience sampling technique. Mix method which was dominant in using qualitative was the research design. Questionnaire, observation sheet, and interview guide was the instrument used in this study. The result of this study showed that teachers’ perception towards pedagogical content knowledge was high, but the implementation was very low. The comparison between teacher’s perception and implementation towards pedagogical content knowledge showed that the teacher’s had lack of consistency. Therefore, learning activities become less effective. In conclusion, the teachers need to improve the implementation of pedagogical content knowledge first before teaching in the class. Designing a CEFR-Based Reading Worksheet for 7th Grade Students at SMP Muhammadiyah Tilango, Indonesia

Creating an interesting learning tool will help students understand the material. This research is aimed to analyze the students’ needs in reading and develop a reading worksheet based on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) at seventh-grade students’ of SMP Muhammadiyah Tilango. To determine the students’ needs, this research used the theory from Hutchinson and Waters (1987) and the ADDIE model by Tylor (2004) to develop the product. However, this research simplifies the ADDIE model into four steps because of the time limit. This research used observation, questionnaire, document analysis, and expert judgment to collect the data. The design of the product was according to the reading comprehension based on CEFR. In order to test the feasibility of the product, there were two experts as the validator, the first one was the English teacher, and second is the lecturer who has experience in developing a book. Moreover, after the product was validated, then implemented to the students. The result found that 86% of students did not learn English in elementary school and 80,95% never took an English course. Moreover, the students’ needs showed that the reading worksheet they wanted is a worksheet that improves their vocabulary. The product that was already made got 88,6% from the first expert and 94,3% from the second expert, indicating good and eligible. Additionally, 94,6% of the students wanted a worksheet like that.
