Main Engineering Geological Problems and Evaluation on the Reservoir Engineering of Yellow River Water Diversion and Irrigation Area

Engineering geology survey was carried out on the reservoir engineering of Yellow River water diversion and irrigation area, main engineering geology problem including leakage problem of reservoir area、shore stable and siltation problem around the reservoir、siltation problem of storehouse district, connected the river course and the pilot, water leakage river course、earthquake liquefication and immerse and salinification were analyzed and appraised, the corresponding project measure was proposed against the infiltrates of the storehouse district.

The Engineering Geological Characteristics Evaluation of the Weak Soft Soil of the Xingheng Highway Test Section

This paper introduced engineering geological conditions of Xingheng highway, analysising, elaborated the adverse geological and special engineering geological problems along the highway, and conducted the engineering geological evaluation accordingly.

Engineering Geological Evaluation of the Spillway of Dam (II-B) of Bunakha Hydroelectric Project, Chukha Dzong, Bhutan

Abstract The 200m long and 106.2m wide spillway of Bunakha Hydroelectric Project is proposed at the centre of the dam to pass the flood discharge. The spillway area was investigated through detailed engineering geological mapping, geophysical survey, exploratory drilling and laboratory testing. The rock mass properties, i.e. joint sets, weathering grade, RQD, RMR, permeability, P-wave velocity etc. of the rock masses to be encountered during the excavation of spillway have been analyzed in detail. Core samples from the exploratory drill hole drilled at the spillway alignment were tested for physico-mechanical properties of rocks in the laboratory. The mapping details indicated that the major rock types which are exposed to the surface and cover the entire spillway area are foliated gneisses with bands of banded gneisses. On the basis of detailed investigations and laboratory testing, inferences and recommendations have been made which will be helpful during the construction of the project.

Engineering geological evaluation of the conditions for constructing a bridge and a tunnel in the zone of the old Petrovaradin Fortress, Serbia

The paper discusses the geotechnical conditions related to the construction of a new bridge over the Danube and a tunnel passing beneath the Petrovaradin Fortress at Novi Sad, Serbia. Analyses showed that both the bridge and the tunnel could be built without causing damage to any of the historical structures and that it would better to build two 8 m wide tunnels than a single 16 m wide structure. One of the two tunnels will involve the widening of an existing one, whereas the other will be newly constructed. The evidence suggests that the new bridge can be built on the reinforced piers of a bridge which was destroyed in World War II.

Engineering geological evaluation of reconstruction sites following the Wenchuan earthquake

Site selection and risk assessment are extremely important aspects of the post-earthquake reconstruction of damaged towns. The main principles applied in this process were the towns located on/adjacent to the fault with a fragile geology would be relocated; heavily damaged towns some distance from the fault but without landslides/debris flows/significant slope movement would be reconstructed at their original location following strict construction codes. During the process of post-earthquake reconstruction, particular attention should be paid to hidden geological hazards, the variety and interdependency of risk-inducing factors and to long-term safety, etc. The paper discusses the site selection process for the reconstruction of Beichuan City, Qingchuan City and Muyu Town.

Engineering geological evaluation and preliminary support design for the metro extension tunnel, Ankara, Turkey

The paper reports an assessment of the engineering geological characteristics of the rock mass to be encountered between Mecidiye and Gazino stations on the new extension of the Ankara metro and the determination of appropriate support and excavation methods. The rock mass quality was estimated using the rock mass rating (RMR), geological strength index (GSI) and rock mass quality (Q) systems and the tunnel divided into sections. The RMR, Q and NATM systems were used to determine the support and excavation methods in these areas. The deformations and stress concentrations around each tunnel section were investigated and the interaction of the support systems with the rock mass was analyzed using finite element software. It is concluded that rock mass classification systems should be used in tandem with numerical tools, although it is emphasized that the estimation of rock mass properties is not an exact science and both rock properties and numerical models should be refined based on observations and the results of instrumentation installed during the construction of a tunnel.

Suitability of Some Tigris Flood Plain Deposits as Impervious Fill Type "A" Class CL for Lining

This paper evaluates the suitability of using some flood plain deposit between Samara and Tikrit as impervious blanket to prevent the leakage of water. The scope of work includes: engineering geological evaluation of the study area, picking and testing samples and the final decision to accept or reject the sampled area according to well-known standards.

Engineering Geological Evaluation Of A Proposed Landfill Site At Aba-Kulodi, Near Ibadan, Southwestern Nigeria

Evaluation of a location at Aba-Kulodi adjacent to kilometre 8 along the Ibadan / Ile-Ife expressway, Southwestern Nigeria was carried out to determine its suitability or otherwise as a landfill site. Two Vertical Electrical Soundings (VES) 30.00m apart were executed to obtain subsurface information on depth to bedrock and possibly the water table. Disturbed and undisturbed soil samples were collected from each of the two trial pits established at vertical interval of 0.50m up to a depth of 3.00m. The disturbed samples were subjected to grain size distribution and consistency limits tests while consolidation and permeability tests were carried out on undisturbed samples. The VES results revealed 3 geo-electric layers with depths to bedrock of between 14.30m and 17.60m at VES 1 and VES 2 respectively. The depths to water table measured from an existing nearby well were 8.10m and 7.00m during the dry and rainy seasons respectively, suggesting that the water table lies within the second geo-electric layer. The soil samples taken from the depth of 3.00m in the two pits are generally well-graded non-plastic sandy clayey silt, a possible indication of no compressibility. The coefficients of permeability obtained for samples from pits 1 and 2 ranges from 1.85 x 10–4mm/s to 3.91 x 10-6mm/s and 1.91 x 10-4mm/s to 2.91 x10-6mm/s respectively. The coefficient of permeability obtained for samples taken from the 3.00m depth in the two pits are significantly higher than the minimum value of 10-6mm/s recommended for soil that should form the base of landfills. The coefficient of volume compressibility at the sampling pits 1 and 2 range from 1.83 to 7.69 x10-3 m2/KN but generally increases with applied pressure (31.2 - 498.9 KN/m2) and decrease with depth (0.5 to 3.0m). Statistical treatment of the values of the coefficient of compressibility of soil samples from the depth of 3.00m in the two test pits shows no significant variation, an indication that there is no likelihood of differential settlement if the site is used for disposal of solid wastes. If in-situ compaction and lining are done, the location can be used as a landfill site. KEY WORDS: Landfill, Plasticity, Compressibility, Permeability, Compaction. Earth Fissuring and Land Subsidence in Western Saudi Arabia

The present investigation deals with the engineering geological evaluation of earth fissuring associated with land subsidence in Wadi Al-Yutamah. The investigations include surface mapping and sampling, in situ and laboratory soil testing, water well inventory, geophysical survey, and monitoring of open fissures and the level of the wadi floor.

Engineering geological evaluation of geological barrier rocks at landfills and repositories

A site specific evaluation of geological barriers is required for landfills and waste repositories. The waste-repository-rock system has to be taken into consideration for this. Since the geotechnical barrier in conjunction with geological barriers contributes considerably to long-term isolation of the harmful substances from the biosphere, it is absolutely necessary to use engineering geology and hydrogeological methods for a quantitative assessment of the barrier effect of the host rock and the geological environment. For a waste disposal mine, the load-bearing capacity of the rock, the protective properties of the surrounding rock formations and the geological stability of the area are important factors in a safety analysis, of which the geotechnical stability analysis is an important part. Such an analysis comprises an engineering geological study of the site, laboratory and in situ experiments and model calculations, long-term monitoring, and special geological and geochemical investigations. Existing geomechanical modelling techniques provide a useful tool to perform barrier integrity calculations and to design an underground disposal mine. As an example, the barrier performance of the rock salt of the Gorleben salt dome is demonstrated using various safety indicators.

Engineering geological evaluation of solid waste landfill sites: Two examples from istanbul, Turkey

Disposal of the solid waste generated in big cities without adverse effects on the environment is a major problem for which solutions have been sought in Turkey as elsewhere in the world. In the selection of sites for the storage of the municipal waste, engineering geology studies and applications play a major role while assessing the suitability of various conditions of the area with respect to sloping the sides, ensuring the impermeability of base and sides, selecting and placing the cover material, and establishing an effective drainage net during the design and construction phases. The suitability of the two Solid Waste Storage Sites which have been constructed recently in Istanbul, one on the European side (Kemerburgaz) and the other on the Asian side (Şile), are evaluated from the engineering geology point of view. Within the framework of this investigation, the geological, geomorphological and geotechnical descriptions of the storage areas and the interaction of these parameters with each other are pointed out. It is emphasized that the design criteria should be established taking into account the particular site conditions.
