The Need for Solar Power Energy Utilization in the Northern Part of Nigeria for Sustainability and Economic Growth (A case study of Nigeria)

Northern Nigeria is one of the most recognizable areas, having vast amounts of solar radiation and rapidly growing populations. Thus, there is an opportunistic aspect of the use of solar power in this region. Since this region enjoys all-year sunshine, it is one of the best places for the integration of solar energy. With huge problems of energy she presently faces such as irregular supply of electricity, people's growth and thus demand, solar power presents an immediate usable, reliable, and sustainable solution. The energy demand in northern Nigeria is expected to sharply increase from about 48 billion kWh in 2024 to 64.5 billion kWh by 2034. This escalated energy requirement directly puts a demand for an efficient and sustainable source of energy, and as such, the promise of steady and renewable energy supply through solar power makes it very appealing. The average regional solar radiation exceeds 6 kWh/m2 per day, which points towards a very vast potential for solar energy generation. But to meet the energy requirements that will arise in the future from solar, it would call for a tremendous investment in infrastructure. This is because it is estimated that approximately 246,000 km2 of solar panels might be needed by 2034 in order to be able to cover the energy needs of the country. However, this massive area is required, but the benefits of solar energy do not stop there at solving shortages of energy. Solar power would increase economic activities due to job creation, stimulation of local industries, and the end reliance on fossil fuels. It has implications on environmental sustainability as it reduces greenhouse gas emissions and promotes cleaner practices of energy consumption. Northern Nigeria will unlock a stable and reliable source of power through investment in this infrastructure. This is important for economic development, thereby eventually improving the quality of life. Indeed, the integration of solar power addresses the immediate needs of satisfying energy challenges but builds a foundation for sustainable growth and environmental stewardship over the long term. Solar power in northern Nigeria is important for ensuring future demands for energy and significant economic development while emphasizing sustainability within the environment. Mn‐Doped CoFeP Nanosheets as Effective Electrocatalysts for Superior Overall Water Splitting

For green hydrogen, the exploitation of advanced electrocatalysts is crucial, and transition metal phosphides have great potential in water splitting due to their abundant reserves and optimized electronic structure. Herein, a synergistic approach involving Mn doping and phosphorization is applied to CoFe‐layered double hydroxide nanoflowers to produce a series of bifunctional catalysts Mn‐doped CoFeP (Mn‐CoFeP). Electrochemical evaluations demonstrate that the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of Mn(10%)‐CoFeP both have notable improvement in 1 M KOH, with the overpotentials of only 160 and 239 mV to achieve current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm−2, respectively. Comparative electrocatalytic analysis indicates that moderate Mn doping mainly contributes to improve the OER performance, while the phosphorization significantly enhances the HER activity, resulting in effective bifunctional catalysis. For overall water decomposition, a total hydrolysis electrolysis cell equipped with the Mn(10%)‐CoFeP bifunctional catalyst requires only 1.64 V to reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2. Furthermore, it performs stable operation for 10 h at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 with a current maintenance rate of 83.6%. This work offers new insights into preparing effective bifunctional electrocatalysts, advancing clean energy development.

Low-Temperature Fabrication of Stable Black-Phase CsPbI3 Perovskite Flexible Photodetectors Toward Wearable Health Monitoring.

Flexible wearable optoelectronic devices fabricated from organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites significantly accelerate the development of portable energy, biomedicine, and sensing fields, but their poor thermal stability hinders further applications. Conversely, all-inorganic perovskites possess excellent thermal stability, but black-phase all-inorganic perovskite film usually requires high-temperature annealing steps, which increases energy consumption and is not conducive to the fabrication of flexible wearable devices. In this work, an unprecedented low-temperature fabrication of stable black-phase CsPbI3 perovskite films is demonstrated by the in situ hydrolysis reaction of diphenylphosphinic chloride additive. The released diphenyl phosphate and chloride ions during the hydrolysis reaction significantly lower the phase transition temperature and effectively passivate the defects in the perovskite films, yielding high-performance photodetectors with a responsivity of 42.1A W-1 and a detectivity of 1.3 × 1014Jones. Furthermore, high-fidelity image and photoplethysmography sensors are demonstrated based on the fabricated flexible wearable photodetectors. This work provides a new perspective for the low-temperature fabrication of large-area all-inorganic perovskite flexible optoelectronic devices.

In Situ Raman Study of Layered Double Hydroxide Catalysts for Water Oxidation to Hydrogen Evolution: Recent Progress and Future Perspectives

With the increasing global emphasis on green energy and sustainable development goals, the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is gradually becoming a crucial focus in research on water oxidation for hydrogen generation. However, its complicated reaction processes associated with its high energy barrier severely limit the efficiency of energy conversion. Recently, layered double hydroxide (LDH) has been considered as one of the most promising catalysts in alkaline media. Nonetheless, lacking a deep insight into the kinetic process of the electrocatalytic OER process is detrimental to the further optimization of LDH catalysts. Therefore, monitoring the catalytic reaction kinetic process via surface-sensitive in situ spectroscopy is especially important. In particular, the in situ Raman technique is capable of providing fingerprint information for surface species and intermediates in the operating environment. From the perspective of Raman spectroscopy, this paper provides an exhaustive overview of research progress in in situ Raman for the characterization of the catalytic mechanism of LDH catalysts, providing theoretical guidance for designing LDH materials. Finally, we present an incisive discussion on the challenges of the electrocatalytic in situ Raman technique and its future development trend.

Development of wind power plants to increase the fulfilment ratio of renewable energy in Taiwan using system dynamics modelling

ABSTRACT This research aims to improve wind energy development by addressing environmental challenges and market dynamics. To achieve this, a system dynamics model was used to analyze the complex relationships between various factors, including wind energy production, electricity demand, costs, and government policies. The study focuses on increasing the fulfilment ratio and reducing the price of wind energy. By simulating different scenarios, researchers explored the potential impact of expanding wind farm capacity through the addition of onshore and offshore turbines. The research also investigates the role of government incentives, particularly the feed-in tariff (FIT), in stimulating investment in wind energy. The findings suggest that a higher FIT can significantly boost profitability, attract more investment, and accelerate the expansion of wind farm capacity. The optimal FIT level of 5.5 NTD/KWh is projected to lead to a 6.7% annual growth rate and substantial profits by 2040.

Selecting Suitable Sites for Wind Energy Harvesting in Iraq using GIS Techniques

Wind energy harnesses the kinetic force of the wind through turbines to produce electricity. As a critical renewable energy source, it presents a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. The availability of wind energy is geographically contingent. This paper aims to pinpoint optimal sites for wind energy development in Iraq and to secure future energy needs from renewable sources to achieve this, a multi-criteria analysis utilizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) was employed to determine the prime locations for wind energy extraction. Vital climatic data incorporated into this analysis included a RASTER file of the study area's annual wind speed, temperature, precipitation, soil moisture, and NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) roads, urban centers, terrain gradients, and land utilization patterns were instrumental in constructing a GIS-based model. This model harnessed the weighted overlay tool within ArcGIS 10.7.1's Spatial Analysis Tools to classify and integrate various raster datasets. Findings reveal that the most favorable locations for wind energy exploitation are in Iraq's southeastern sectors. These zones are not only marked by vigorous winds averaging speeds over 6.2 meters per second but also benefit from their proximity to power grids, accessible roads, and gentle slopes, making them prime candidates for wind farm installation. The research also notes that regions with a high suitability index for wind energy development constitute 5.3% of the total examined area. This is a robust indicator of Iraq's capacity for wind energy utilization. Meanwhile, 79.7% of the territory received a moderate suitability rating, 9.5% was categorized as poorly suitable, and 5.4% was considered unsuitable for wind energy projects. These insights underscore the significant potential for harvesting wind energy in Iraq and guide strategic planning for its implementation.

Enhancing the energy and environmental efficiency of the city's infrastructure based on optimizing its fuel and energy balance

The article considers the direction of increasing the energy and environmental efficiency of the city's energy infrastructure through the modernization of existing thermal power plants (TPP) and combined heat and power (CHP) plants using combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plants. Fuel and energy balances of electric power plants have been constructed, and the energy and environmental effects of the use of CCGT have been assessed. The modeling of energy and environmental indicators for the thermal circuits of the CCGT was conducted using the Thermoflex, GT PRO software (Thermoflow) and the ISC Manager program developed at the National Research University "Moscow Power Engineering Institute (MPEI)". The analysis of CCGT efficiency in urban energy applications is based on modeling and optimizing the city’s fuel and energy balance (FEB). For this purpose, the OptiTEB program developed at the Department of PTS at the National Research University "MРEI" is used. Constructing fuel and energy systems in cities and regions is a pressing task that enables the planning of a strategy for the development of the urban fuel and energy complex (FEC), with an assessment of the magnitude of harmful emissions, including greenhouse gases. The article presents the results of work on establishing scientific foundations for modern heat supply systems, exemplified by a mathematical model of the Moscow thermal power plant and its optimization, taking into account the projected development of electric transport infrastructure over the coming decades, improving the thermal protection characteristics of newly constructed buildings, and the potential increase in the use of renewable energy sources (RES). The growth in the share of electric transport should be linked to an increase in the share of renewable energy sources (RES). Simply increasing the number of electric vehicles without a significant rise in renewable energy usage in the city's energy balance will not result in a reduction of carbon dioxide and harmful substance emissions. Expanding electricity generation through CCGT, alongside the growth of renewable energy use in the city, can lead to a significant decrease in carbon dioxide emissions.

Hetero‐Dimensional Micro‐Nano Architectures Toward Electromagnetic Devices and Hybrid Energy Transport

AbstractHuman spaceflight, lunar exploration projects, and interstellar travel are the grand visions of human exploration of the universe. However, the energy sustainability of these projects is a concern. Electromagnetic functional materials and devices are expected to fulfill their potential in electronic communication and energy utilization. Herein, hetero‐dimensional micro‐nano architectures composed of Cu3Se2 microspheres and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets are fabricated for the first time by the sacrificial template method, anion substitution engineering, electrostatic adsorption, and reduction‐oxidation reaction. Based on the excellent electromagnetic response of the composites, they exhibit strong and ultra‐wide microwave absorption ability with the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) reaching 8.24 GHz at a thickness of 2.2 mm. In addition, an electromagnetic metamaterial with an EAB to ≈13.5 GHz is proposed, exhibiting significant properties. More significantly, the composites can be used to construct a range of electromagnetic devices: a spiral antenna with adjustable return loss and gain, with a maximum gain of up to 2.5 dBi; a microstrip power divider that can efficiently split the input signal into four equal parts and output it; a hybridized energy transport device can convert and store electromagnetic energy. This work provides new inspiration for electromagnetic protection, electronic communication, and energy development.

Adoption of Rooftop Solar Power as an Energy Option: A Household Level Study in Pune Smart City

Power generation using fossil fuels on a large scale contributes to global greenhouse gases and, therefore, impacts climate change. Renewable energy sources like solar power are needed to overcome such adverse impacts. Solar energy has received attention in the recent years due to both technological improvements resulting in cost reductions as well as the government policy push for renewable energy development and utilization. This research concerns with the adoption of rooftop solar power as an energy option at household level in the context of smart cities. We conducted a questionnaire survey on a sample of resident households in Pune smart city and analysed various parameters concerning households’ adoption. It has been found that the respondents are less willing to adopt rooftop solar power option for the lack of awareness of energy conservation and climate change issues, lack of financial incentives for the adoption and concern for operational issues that arise after the adoption; the respondents who are aware are more likely to adopt it in a timeframe of 1–3 years. Statistical analysis of various important relationships may be useful for future research on household adoption of renewable energy options, such as rooftop solar power.

Feasibility Assessment of Hybrid Renewable Energy Based EV Charging Station in Libya

This study presents an assessment of the feasibility of implementing a hybrid renewable energy-based electric vehicle (EV) charging station at a residential building in Tripoli, Libya. Utilizing the advanced capabilities of HOMER Grid software, the research evaluates multiple scenarios involving combinations of solar and wind energy sources integrated with energy storage and the utility grid. This analysis provides a novel approach to enhancing urban energy systems with renewable technologies in a region traditionally reliant on fossil fuels. Key contributions of this study include the demonstration of an innovative integration strategy that combines solar and wind power with battery storage to ensure a reliable and efficient energy supply for EV charging. Furthermore, the study addresses the practical implications for local energy policy, suggesting that such hybrid systems can significantly enhance energy security and support sustainable urban development. The authors studied five scenarios using HOMER. The results reveals that the annual total costs and payback periods are as follows: for Scenario 1 (wind/utility grid), the expenditure totals US$1,554,416 and payback period of 4.8/5.8 years; for Scenario 2 (solar/wind/Utility grid), the amount is US$1,554,506 and payback period of 4.8/5.8 years; and for Scenario 3(solar/wind/storage/utility grid), it escalates slightly to US$1,554,731, all predicated on the utility grid tariffs and payback period of 4.8/5.8 years. Furthermore, in Scenario 4 (solar/utility grid), the annual total cost is significantly reduced to US$30,589 and a payback period of 8.1/14.3 years, while Scenario 5 (solar/storage/utility grid) incurs an even lower expenditure of US$28,572, again based on the utility grid tariffs and a payback period of 14.0 years. The findings contribute valuable insights into the scalability and adaptability of renewable energy solutions, providing a robust framework for policymakers and planners considering similar implementations in other regions. Overall, the research underscores the potential of integrated renewable energy systems to transform urban energy infrastructures, promoting a sustainable and resilient energy future. The HOMER Grid analysis shows that configurations with energy storage are more cost-effective in the long run, even though they require higher initial costs. It also offers important insights into the economic viability and optimization of hybrid renewable energy systems for an EV charging station in Tripoli, Libya. These results highlight the significance of making calculated investments in renewable energy infrastructure and supporting policies for the development of sustainable energy.

Evolution of Regional Innovation Strategies Towards the Transition to Green Energy in Europe 2014–2027

This paper explores the factors influencing regions’ commitment to the EU’s green energy transition during the 2021–2027 period, with a particular focus on the impact of prior commitments and fossil fuel dependence. Using multimodel regression analysis along with a null classification approach with large language models, we assess how regions’ existing green energy initiatives, their dependence on fossil fuels, and specific energy targets shape their progress towards the EU Green Deal goals. The results confirm path dependency in regional energy policies, where regions with prior investments in decarbonization and energy infrastructure show greater commitment in the current period. Fossil-fuel-dependent regions, on the other hand, face structural barriers slowing their transition to green energy. In addition, the study highlights the selective prioritization of decarbonization and energy efficiency goals, while goals such as consumer empowerment and offshore wind energy remain undervalued. The findings underscore the need for a more comprehensive, sustainable approach to energy transition, particularly in regions with significant dependence on fossil fuels. The paper concludes with a discussion of policy implications for achieving a holistic and equitable energy transition across all EU regions.

Evaluating Deep Learning Networks Versus Hybrid Network for Smart Monitoring of Hydropower Plants

One of the main goals of the International Energy Agency (IEA) is to manage and utilize clean energy to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. Hydropower plants can significantly contribute to this goal as they are vital components of the global energy infrastructure, providing a clean, safe, and sustainable power source. Accordingly, there is great interest in developing methods to prevent errors and anomalies and ensure full operational availability. With modern hydropower plants equipped with sensors that capture extensive data, machine learning algorithms utilizing these data to detect and predict anomalies have gained research attention. This paper demonstrates that deep learning algorithms are particularly powerful in predicting time series. Three well-known deep learning networks are examined and compared to previous approaches, followed by the introduction of a new, innovative hybrid network. Using real-world data from two hydropower plants, the hybrid model outperforms individual deep learning models by achieving more accurate fault detection, reducing false positives, offering early fault prediction, and identifying faults several weeks before occurrence. These results showcase the hybrid network’s potential to enhance maintenance planning, reduce downtime, and improve operational efficiency in energy systems.

Prioritizing sustainability of renewable energy projects in Morocco

Purpose The purpose of the study is to examine the electricity generation potential of different renewable energy sources in Morocco, as well as to propose a novel decision support model to prioritize renewable energy alternatives. The aim is to provide recommendations that support Morocco’s energy transition strategy and assist policymakers in devising future sustainable energy policies. Design/methodology/approach The paper integrates the analytic hierarchy process with expert feedback to prioritize five renewable energy alternatives – solar photovoltaics (PV), concentrated solar panels (CSP), wind, hydro and biomass – specific to the Moroccan context. The model uses 14 sub-criteria clustered into four main categories: economic, technological, socio-political and environmental. The criteria were weighted based on inputs from local energy sector experts to capture the distinct priorities and contextual specificities of Morocco’s renewable energy landscape. Findings The study’s findings emphasize the dominance of economic criteria among Moroccan experts. Solar PV emerged as the most suitable option due to its cost-effectiveness and alignment with Morocco’s policies to support solar energy, followed by hydropower and wind. CSP and biomass ranked lowest due to high costs and limited viability. Research limitations/implications This study highlighted the need for quality data to support informed decision-making, as well as for a centralized database to facilitate access to consistent information on renewable energy projects. Practical implications It is recommended that policymakers prioritize mature and cost-effective technologies by establishing supportive regulatory frameworks and expanding investments in hybrid renewable energy infrastructures. Originality/value In addition to introducing the Analytic Hierarchy Process model for the first time within the Moroccan context, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, this research draws recommendations to assist Moroccan policymakers in devising future sustainable policies for the energy sector.

Review of Economic, Technical and Environmental Aspects of Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicles (EVs) have seen significant advancements and mainstream adoption, prompting in-depth analysis of their economic, technical, and environmental impacts. Economically, while EVs offer lower operational costs than internal combustion engine vehicles, challenges remain, particularly for urban users reliant on public charging stations and the potential implementation of new road taxes to offset declining fuel tax revenues. Technically, electric motors in EVs have fewer moving parts, but battery management and cybersecurity complexities pose new risks. Transitioning from Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) to Lithium-Iron-Phosphate (LFP) batteries reflects efforts to enhance thermal stability and mitigate fire hazards. Environmentally, lithium extraction for batteries has profound ecological impacts, including for water consumption and pollution. Battery production and the carbon footprint of the entire lifecycle remain pressing concerns, with battery recycling and second-life applications as crucial mitigation strategies. Smart integration of EVs with the energy infrastructure introduces challenges like grid stability and opportunities, such as smart, intelligent, innovative charging solutions and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology. Future research should develop economic models to forecast long-term impacts, advance battery technology, enhance cybersecurity, and conduct comprehensive environmental assessments to optimise the benefits of electromobility, addressing the multidimensional challenges and opportunities presented by EVs.

Predicting Natural Gas Production in Various Nations Using a Fractional Grey Bernoulli Approach

Accurate forecasting of natural gas production is crucial for economic stability, environmental sustainability, and market investment. This study presents an advanced forecasting method using the fractional grey Bernoulli model, which combines fractional accumulation and Bernoulli processes to enhance the predictive accuracy for nonlinear datasets. The model’s versatility and flexibility allow it to adapt to various data characteristics and complexities, thereby outperforming traditional grey models in forecasting performance. To optimize the model parameters, this study employs the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm, further improving the model’s effectiveness. Empirical analysis of natural gas production data from Brazil, Italy, and Qatar demonstrates that the model exhibits significant advantages in both fitting and forecasting capabilities. The findings indicate that the fractional grey Bernoulli model achieves high accuracy and reliability in predicting natural gas production in these countries, providing a robust framework for strategic energy planning and investment decision-making. With average forecast errors of 1.9113%, 4.0353%, and 1.8902% for natural gas production in Brazil, Italy, and Qatar respectively, this study underscores the model’s effectiveness in enhancing forecast reliability and minimizing risk, providing valuable insights for sustainable energy development.

Governance Frameworks for Renewable Energy Development: Energy Transition and Public Governance

Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate governance frameworks for renewable energy development, with the aim of understanding how effective governance can facilitate the energy transition and contribute to sustainable development. Theoretical Framework: This research draws on key theories in public governance and energy transition, focusing on regulatory mechanisms, stakeholder engagement, and the integration of renewable energy policies. Concepts from energy security and sustainable development underpin the analysis. Method: A comprehensive literature review and case study analysis were conducted. The study design includes an examination of regulatory and policy mechanisms, stakeholder involvement, and institutional structures across various regions. Data collection was based on case studies from different countries, analyzing the challenges and successes in renewable energy governance. Results and Discussion: The results revealed the critical role of policy coherence, long-term stability, and stakeholder engagement in the successful implementation of governance frameworks. Key challenges such as regulatory uncertainty, grid integration, and public acceptance were identified. The discussion contextualizes these findings within the theoretical framework, offering insights into the relationships between governance and energy policy outcomes. Research Implications: The study provides practical and theoretical implications for policymakers and energy practitioners. It underscores the need for coherent, stable, and inclusive governance frameworks that can address barriers and promote the integration of renewable energy into national energy systems. Originality/Value: This study contributes to the literature by offering an in-depth analysis of governance frameworks and their role in the renewable energy transition. It highlights best practices and offers valuable lessons for stakeholders engaged in energy governance.

EFFECT OF PUBLIC PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP FINANCING STRUCTURE ON COMPLETION OF GEOTHERMAL ENERGY DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS IN KENYA

Objective: To determine the effect of Public Private Partnership (PPP) financing structure on the completion of geothermal energy development projects in Kenya. Theoretical Framework: The study used agency and public choice theories to analyze the dynamics between PPP financing structure and completion of geothermal energy development projects. Methodology: A cross-sectional census survey in Kenya surveyed 48 geothermal energy development projects, collecting quantitative data through structured questionnaires and qualitative insights from industry regulators, financiers, and practitioners. A combination of descriptive, correlation, and linear regression statistical models were applied. Multiple diagnostics tests and data triangulation were performed. Results and Discussion: The study results provide strong statistical evidence depicting a positive relationship between PPP financing structure and the completion of geothermal energy development projects in Kenya. The findings suggest that as the level of PPP involvement increases, so does the likelihood of faster project completion. The study also reveals that a balanced PPP financing structure has a substantial effect on the completion of geothermal energy development projects. The analysis demonstrates that a hybrid PPP financing structure comprising recommended proportions of private and government equity, commercial and concessional loans, hybrid finance, and grants significantly affects project completion outcomes. Research Implications: The study emphasizes the significance of a structured PPP financing model, comprising private and government equity, concessional and commercial loans, hybrid finance, and mixed grants, in mitigating inherent PPP risks for enhanced project completion outcomes. In addition, effective government support measures and robust delivery capability of developers jointly influence the two variables in a significant manner. Originality/Value: This study uniquely analyzes the influence of PPP financing structure on the completion of geothermal energy development projects in Kenya, integrating quantitative and qualitative data for a comprehensive perspective, thus offering essential insights for stakeholders.

Photovoltaic Power Station Impacts on the Benthic Ecosystem and Sediment Carbon Storage in Tidal Flats in China.

Photovoltaic power is a rapidly growing component of the renewable energy sector. Photovoltaic power stations (PVPSs) on coastal tidal flats offer benefits, but the lack of information on the effects of PVPSs on benthic ecosystems and sediment carbon storage can hamper the development of eco-friendly renewable energy. We sampled the macrobenthos and sediment cores at a PVPS on a coastal tidal flat in eastern China. The biodiversity indicators and benthic ecological quality based on macrobenthos were mostly higher under the photovoltaic panels than elsewhere. These variations were primarily driven by pH, sediment grain size, and chlorophyll-a content. However, the PVPS had exerted a considerable influence on the macrobenthic community structure. Furthermore, the carbon stocks in the sediment cores from under the photovoltaic panels were similar to those in the reference sites. These results suggest that this PVPS has not had discernible short-term adverse effects on the benthic ecosystems or sediment carbon storage of the tidal flat. Nevertheless, the potentially long-term and cascading risks throughout the ecosystem warrant caution. Therefore, we recommend that policymakers adopt a cautious development strategy and implement long-term, high-frequency monitoring to ensure the sustainability of renewable energy production on coastal tidal flats.

INNV-08. PRE-CLINICAL AND CLINICAL EVIDENCE FOR THE TREATMENT OF DMG/DIPG USING EMULATE THERAPEUTICS’ ULTRA-LOW RADIO FREQUENCY MAGNETIC FIELD SIGNAL TECHNOLOGY

Abstract EMulate Therapeutics, Inc. (EMTx) has developed a technology that emulates the effects of chemical compounds via a magnetic field. Our research has led to the development of a radio frequency energy (RFE) signal (A1A) that emulates the effects of paclitaxel. Pre-clinical studies demonstrate an effect in slowing down and inhibiting tumor growth. The results of feasibility (Phase I/II) clinical trials testing the EMTx technology for treating recurrent GBM (rGBM) were published in CNS Oncology (CNS Oncol 2023 Pages CNS102, Accession Number: 37462385 DOI: 10.2217/cns-2022-0016). Reported results suggest that the A1A signal is non-inferior to best supportive care (BSC) and when the A1A signal is combined with BSC, a 3-month increase in overall survival (OS) was observed. Diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas (DIPG) are a rare pediatric central nervous system (CNS) tumor. Survival is measured at under 12 months, with no clinical trials demonstrating a significant increase in OS in 20 years (9 months median survival post radiation therapy). EMTx’s compassionate use program (Hælo® medical device) demonstrated safety and suggested a clinical benefit, with 12 of 14 patients surviving more than 12 months, with median survival of 17 months. EMTx recently completed an orthotopic mouse model of DIPG at University of California San Francisco. The results from exposing the mice to the A1A signal demonstrated a significant survival advantage (P = 0.0163) via the slowing down of cell division. Data to be submitted for peer review publication. The animal model is encouraging and supports the observed results of our compassionate use program. EMTX will submit these results to the FDA for regulatory approval via the Humanitarian Device Exemption pathway. The company will conduct a study with DIPG patients from both the US and India. Subject to FDA protocol approval, 30-35 patients will be recruited to participate in this pediatric neuro-oncology trial, which will be a best supportive care + single therapy (Hælo®) clinical trial.

The Eectricity Crisis and the Feasibility of Nuclear Energy in Egypt

The power outage crisis is increasing in Egypt, negatively affecting many other sectors such as industry, agriculture, and trade. In light of the lack of sufficient capacity to meet the growing needs of consumers, which has led to regular power shortages and power outages. While Egypt needs additional energy, the production of gas and oil needed to generate thermal energy decreased in 2014, and Egypt moved from an exporter of natural gas to a net importer. In addition to this, the volume of subsidies allocated to energy increased, the rise in global prices for oil and natural gas, and the need for huge investments to create Power generation plants, development of transportation networks, and distribution of electrical energy, which led to pressure on the general budget. A continuous and reliable supply of electricity is needed for Egypt's social and economic development. Accordingly, the government encouraged the development of new energy, invited the private sector to participate in energy generation, and a number of government reforms were made in order to enhance competition in the energy market, which required the need to study the possibility of providing it using nuclear energy. Its stations have a high load capacity, operate almost at full capacity all the time, are characterized by the stability of the electrical network and energy independence, and avoid the risks of fuel price shocks, and the costs of generating electricity from them decrease with increasing production. The importance of this research lies in highlighting the challenges facing the structure of the electricity sector in Egypt, and studying the advantages enjoyed by nuclear energy as the most important renewable energy sources in the world. Its importance also lies in comparing nuclear energy with other energy sources, and trying to benefit Egypt from obtaining this energy for use.
