There is no epidemiologic evidence to suggest that most hospital waste is any more infective than residential waste. Moreover, there is no epidemiologic evidence that hospital waste disposal practices have caused disease in the community. Therefore, identifying wastes for which special precautions are indicated is largely a matter of judgment about the relative risk of disease transmission. Aesthetic and emotional considerations may override the actual risk of disease transmission, particularly for pathology wastes.

Emotional aspects in a chronic disease

Emotional considerations are crucial to the management of diabetes. These include the impact of diabetes on the patients' everyday life, and the impact of day-to-day stress. The role which the patient adopts - "healthy" or "sick" - is only partially related to the actual medical status. In this study we have focused on some of the long-standing emotional reactions related to diabetes, e. g. somatopsychological reactions. These reactions are common and some, such as reduced bodily self-esteem, sexual dysfunction and use of the disease as an alibi, are more common in men. The diabetics feel that some of these reactions are more common in themselves than in their partners. The symptoms correlate with acceptance of the disease. The risk of sexual dysfunction appears to be lower in the well-adjusted patient despite the possible presence of organic complications. In the management of diabetes these somatopsychological reactions must be treated in order to achieve the best possible medical status and an acceptable way of life for the individual and his/her family.

Emotional aspects in diabetes mellitus: a study of somatopsychological reactions in 51 couples in which one partner has insulin-treated diabetes.

Fifty-one couples in which one partner has insulin-treated diabetes were studied in a combined questionnaire/interview procedure. Focus was the emotional aspects in having a chronic disease seen from both the patient's and the partner's point of view. The diabetics complained more often of fear and anxiety about future, fluctuations in mood and were finding their daily life more troublesome. Further the diabetics claimed to be more tired and diabetic males had more sexual concerns. We find the emotional considerations crucial to the management of diabetes and suggest better efforts should be made in coping with these problems including both the patient and the spouse.

Abstract Aho, L. 1984. Man and Nature: Cognitive and Emotional Elements in the Views of Twelve‐Year‐Old Schoolchilden. Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research 28, 169‐186. The article gives an account of research into the viewpoints of 12‐year‐old Finnish pupils concerning the relation between man and nature as well as their own relation towards the natural world. Furthermore, the research raised questions about the cognitive level of thought processes, emotional considerations and experiences in pupils' opinions regarding nature and man‐nature relationship. The connection between cognitive and emotional elements was explored, too. The data were compiled from the compositions of the pupils and from opinions of the same pupils considering a plan for the construction of an outdoor centre. The results suggested that the pupils tended to stress both man and nature from different cognitive and emotional aspects. Clinical interactions of verbal language, learning and behavior

Abstract Results of research and clinical investigation in speech and language development have identified the linguistic process as a primary determinant of human behavior. Disturbances in this process may lead to learning and academic failures, and may be either the cause or the result of various forms of behavioral disorders. Children with developmental speech and language disorders therefore present a complex set of problems. A thorough differential diagnostic evaluation requires the evaluation of pertinent physiological, environmental and emotional considerations, as well as measures of linguistic competence and performance. The recognition that a speech disturbance may affect a broad spectrum of behavior should lead to more effective programs of treatment and intervention.

Preschoolers at risk: Social, emotional and cognitive considerations

This report examines the IQs of 75 preschool children perceived to be “at risk” by parents, nursery school teachers, and diagnostic nursery staff. Full Scale, verbal and Performance IQs of the WPPSI were correlated with: (a) assessment of problem area (b) socioeconomic and familial variables (c) gross assessments of speech and motor development and (d) attendance, participation and improvement in a special preschool program. Significant correlations were obtained between IQ and: (a) socioeconomic and familial variables, and (b) perceived improvement. The findings emphasize that social, emotional and cognitive factors are interrelated components in the child's global development.

Emotional considerations in familial polyposis

A LTHOUGH a great deal of literature covers the genetics, diagnosis, and treatment of familial multiple polyposis, there are no reports of concurrent emotional difficulties. The following is a summary of the diagnostic and treatment considerations of this disease, followed by a case study of an unusual young man with depression, bisexuality, and familial polyposis. The conflict between the definitive surgical treatment and the patient’s opposition is then considered. This patient is a caricature of the emotional difficulties that all patients with familial polyposis face. Familial polyposis is a rare hereditary disease characterized by varying numbers of adenomatous polyps originating from the mucosa of the colon and rectum. The disease has an estimated frequency of one in 8300 births’ and is transmitted as an autosomal dominate trait.2 In the majority of cases, the onset of the disease is between the ages of 10 and 40. If untreated, the polyps undergo carcinogenic degeneration and death ensues.3 The disease must be differentiated from the pseudopolyposis accompanying ulcerative colitis and the other forms of hereditary polyposis which do not necessarily have the same premalignant disposition.p These other genetically distinct syndromes include: (A) Gardner’s Syndrome (premalignant polyposis of the colon associated with skin tumors and osteomata); (B) Turcot’s Syndrome (colonic polyposis associated with brain tumor); and (C) Peutz-Jegher’s Syndrome (nonpremalignant polyposis mainly of, but not limited to, the small intestine and associated with melanotic spots of the hands and buccal mucosa).5 Once the diagnosis has been confirmed by barium enema, sigmoidoscopy, and biopsy, the question of treatment arises. Historically, there have been two schools of thought regarding the optimal therapy of this disorder. Members of the more conservative school recommend colectomy, ileoproctostomy, and frequent follow-up to guard against carcinogenic degeneration in the remaining terminal segment.6*7 Adherents of the other school recommend total proctocolectomy and ileostomy to ensure the removal of all polyp-forming mucosa.“pg Recent studies support the latter school in that approximately 5% of the patients treated by the first method go on to develop carcinoma of the terminal segment.7*10-12 In addition, a significant number of patients are lost to follow-up over the years.‘O Thus, total extirpation with ileostomy is the treatment of choice and especially in any patient thought to be unreliable for follow-up.‘3,‘” Familial polyposis is a potentially fatal disease that is curable though the use of

Belief and the Will

In this article, we will consider how far we might be said to be active in forming our beliefs; in particular, we will ask to what extent we can be said to be free in believing what we want to believe. It is clear that we ought to believe only what is really so, at least in so far as it lies in our power to determine this, but reflection shows that, regrettably, we do not confine our beliefs to what we have evidence for, nor do we always believe in accordance with the evidence we do have. So it is natural to conclude that non-intellectual factors may be at work here; such, at least, was the view of Descartes, who attributed error to the influence of our will in leading us to assent to judgments which go beyond the evidence presented by our infallible intellect. This view has some initial plausibility when we think of cases in which emotional considerations lead people to take up and genuinely believe things they have no evidence for, but it is not a view which has received much support from modern philosophers. So, in Part 1 we will look at criticisms levelled against Descartes' view by J. L. Evans, and in Part 2 we will see how far Descartes can be defended. Our conclusions here will lead us to give in Part 3 a general account of the influence of the will in beliefs. We will suggest that we are always responsible for our explicit beliefs, even though it is not true that we can simply believe what we like. Thus we will reject the idea that a man can consciously know something, and at the same time, by will power, believe the opposite. Belief is not then totally free, but we will argue that people do sometimes form beliefs which go against what they should and could believe, and that this can in a way be put down to the influence of the will. Finally we will consider some of the ways in which it is possible to influence our beliefs by willed acts over a long period of time, though this is not the way that we clami that the will might be said to play a part in every judgment that we make.
