Abstract Aho, L. 1984. Man and Nature: Cognitive and Emotional Elements in the Views of Twelve‐Year‐Old Schoolchilden. Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research 28, 169‐186. The article gives an account of research into the viewpoints of 12‐year‐old Finnish pupils concerning the relation between man and nature as well as their own relation towards the natural world. Furthermore, the research raised questions about the cognitive level of thought processes, emotional considerations and experiences in pupils' opinions regarding nature and man‐nature relationship. The connection between cognitive and emotional elements was explored, too. The data were compiled from the compositions of the pupils and from opinions of the same pupils considering a plan for the construction of an outdoor centre. The results suggested that the pupils tended to stress both man and nature from different cognitive and emotional aspects.
