Cognitive performance of grey mouse lemurs (Microcebus murinus) during a discrimination learning task: Effect of the emotional valence of stimuli.

Emotions are omnipresent in many animals' lives. It is a complex concept that encompasses physiological, subjective, behavioural and cognitive aspects. While the complex relationship between emotion and cognition has been well studied in humans and in some nonhuman primates, it remains rather unexplored for other nonhuman primate species, such as lemurs. In our study, we evaluated the performance of N = 48 grey mouse lemurs (Microcebus murinus) in a discrimination learning task using visual emotional stimuli. We tested whether the type of visual stimulus (positive, negative or neutral) influenced the cognitive performance of mouse lemurs. Individuals had to learn to discriminate between two platforms according to the associated visual stimuli and to jump to the target platform (leading to a reward). Our main finding was that emotional stimuli, whether positive or negative in valence, impaired cognitive performance when used as a target. Specifically, the lowest success rate occurred when the target was associated with the emotional stimuli, and the highest success rate occurred when it was associated with neutral stimuli. Our results show a similar pattern to that found in other primate species and support the adaptive role of emotion. Our results also support that individual differences could be a factor impacting the relation between emotion and cognition. This study is the first to explore how emotions interfere with the cognitive abilities of a lemur species and highlights the importance of acknowledging emotion in mouse lemurs as well as studying the emotion-cognition interaction in a wider range of primate species.

Computational Modeling of the Prefrontal-Cingulate Cortex to Investigate the Role of Coupling Relationships for Balancing Emotion and Cognition.

Within the prefrontal-cingulate cortex, abnormalities in coupling between neuronal networks can disturb the emotion-cognition interactions, contributing to the development of mental disorders such as depression. Despite this understanding, the neural circuit mechanisms underlying this phenomenon remain elusive. In this study, we present a biophysical computational model encompassing three crucial regions, including the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, subgenual anterior cingulate cortex, and ventromedial prefrontal cortex. The objective is to investigate the role of coupling relationships within the prefrontal-cingulate cortex networks in balancing emotions and cognitive processes. The numerical results confirm that coupled weights play a crucial role in the balance of emotional cognitive networks. Furthermore, our model predicts the pathogenic mechanism of depression resulting from abnormalities in the subgenual cortex, and network functionality was restored through intervention in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. This study utilizes computational modeling techniques to provide an insight explanation for the diagnosis and treatment of depression.

Centering prayer in the treatment of bipolar disorder

Bipolar Disorder (BD), formerly manic-depressive illness or manic depression, is a lifelong mood disorder and mental health condition that causes intense shifts in mood, energy levels, thinking patterns, and behavior. These shifts can last for hours, days, weeks, or months, interrupting the ability to carry out daily tasks. The condition is manageable with medications, talk therapy, lifestyle changes, and other treatments, but the therapy results are unreliable in many patients. Most faith traditions have two forms of prayer: discursive and contemplative. Most believers practice discursive prayer. Medical research has shown the statistical healing effects of discursive prayer, but there is considerably less research on contemplative prayer. Hesse reports a method of teaching CP by asking a volunteer to help demonstrate the analogy between human and Divine relationships in the following quoted phases., Therefore, we hypothesize that CP might produce a significant depression improvement in BP patients. Two neurologists double-blind diagnosed five patients complaining of BD and five normal subjects. All cases expressed their belief in God, so CP is prayer, not non-theistic meditation. Patients will be free of medication and selected during depressive episodes. Among the trait markers are frontal alpha asymmetry,55,56, and changes in frontal qEEG cordance. A very stable QEEG pattern, consisting of frontal alpha asymmetry, was observed in all five patients. Hence, this pattern was used to compare QEEG before and after CP. Our main result showed that the focal left frontal Alpha increment disappeared after CP. Conclusion: CP is a promising tool for treating depression, organizing the function interplay among brain networks that subserve Cognition-emotion interactions in the prefrontal cortex.

Cognition-Emotion Interaction during L2 Sentence Comprehension: The Correlation of ERP and GSR Responses to Sense Combinations.

This study mainly examined the role of the combination of three senses (i.e., auditory, visual, and tactile) and five senses (i.e., auditory, visual, tactile, olfactory, and gustatory) in the correlation between electrophysiological and electrodermal responses underlying second language (L2) sentence comprehension. Forty subjects did two acceptability judgment tasks, encompassing congruent and semantically/pragmatically incongruent sentences. The event-related potential (ERP) and galvanic skin response (GSR) data for both the target and final words of the sentences were collected and analyzed. The results revealed that there is an interaction between cognitive and emotional responses in both semantically and pragmatically incongruent sentences, yet the timing of the interaction is longer in sentences with pragmatic incongruity due to their complexity. Based on the ERP and GSR correlation results, it was further found that the five-sense combination approach improves L2 sentence comprehension and interest in learning materials yet reduces the level of excitement or arousal. While this approach might be beneficial for some learners, it might be detrimental for those in favor of stimulating learning environments.

UNRAVELING THE COGNITIVE MECHANISM OF EMOTIONAL VALIDITY IN CONFLICT CONTROL

Understanding the cognitive mechanisms underlying emotional validity in conflict control is crucial for elucidating how emotions influence decision-making and cognitive processing. Emotional validity refers to the congruence between emotional cues and task demands, impacting the allocation of attention and cognitive resources during conflict resolution. This paper reviews current research investigating the neural correlates and behavioral effects of emotional validity on conflict control processes. It examines how emotional stimuli modulate attentional bias, response inhibition, and cognitive flexibility through interactions with brain regions implicated in emotion regulation and cognitive control. Furthermore, the paper discusses implications for cognitive theories of emotion-cognition interaction and potential applications in clinical and real-world settings.

Workload-dependent hemispheric asymmetries during the emotion-cognition interaction: a close-to-naturalistic fNIRS study.

We investigated brain activation patterns of interacting emotional distractions and cognitive processes in a close-to-naturalistic functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) study. Eighteen participants engaged in a monitoring-control task, mimicking common air traffic controller requirements. The scenario entailed experiencing both low and high workload, while concurrently being exposed to emotional speech distractions of positive, negative, and neutral valence. Our investigation identified hemispheric asymmetries in prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity during the presentation of negative and positive emotional speech distractions at different workload levels. Thereby, in particular, activation in the left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) and orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) seems to play a crucial role. Brain activation patterns revealed a cross-over interaction indicating workload-dependent left hemispheric inhibition processes during negative distractions and high workload. For positive emotional distractions under low workload, we observed left-hemispheric PFC recruitment potentially associated with speech-related processes. Furthermore, we found a workload-independent negativity bias for neutral distractions, showing brain activation patterns similar to those of negative distractions. In conclusion, lateralized hemispheric processing, regulating emotional speech distractions and integrating emotional and cognitive processes, is influenced by workload levels and stimulus characteristics. These findings advance our understanding of the factors modulating hemispheric asymmetries during the processing and inhibition of emotional distractions, as well as the interplay between emotion and cognition. Moreover, they emphasize the significance of exploring emotion-cognition interactions in more naturalistic settings to gain a deeper understanding of their implications in real-world application scenarios (e.g., working and learning environments).

How children learn to understand language meanings: a neural model of adult-child multimodal interactions in real-time.

This article describes a biological neural network model that can be used to explain how children learn to understand language meanings about the perceptual and affective events that they consciously experience. This kind of learning often occurs when a child interacts with an adult teacher to learn language meanings about events that they experience together. Multiple types of self-organizing brain processes are involved in learning language meanings, including processes that control conscious visual perception, joint attention, object learning and conscious recognition, cognitive working memory, cognitive planning, emotion, cognitive-emotional interactions, volition, and goal-oriented actions. The article shows how all of these brain processes interact to enable the learning of language meanings to occur. The article also contrasts these human capabilities with AI models such as ChatGPT. The current model is called the ChatSOME model, where SOME abbreviates Self-Organizing MEaning.

Exploring the direction of the English translation of environmental protection articles based on the robot cognitive- emotional interaction model

To broaden the application area of the cognitive-emotional interaction model for robots. In this paper, an algorithmic model for the English translation of environmental articles based on a cognitive-emotional interaction model for robots is used to model the process of emotion generation using reinforcement learning. Similarly, positivity and empathy are used to quantify the reward function for emotional state assessment, and the optimal emotional strategy selection is derived based on the utility function. In the process of article translation by the robot, Lagrangian factors are introduced to make the translation probability maximum process transformed into the process of obtaining the highest value of the auxiliary function at a random state. Finally, the effectiveness of the robot's cognitive-emotional interaction model in the English translation of environmental protection articles is verified by the Chinese-English parallel question-and-answer dataset. The experimental results demonstrate that this model can not only be used for the English translation of environmental protection articles but also can give the corresponding English translation work similar to human emotions, which can better help people understand the meaning of English. It also provides a basis and direction for the subsequent in-depth application of the robot cognitive-emotional interaction model in various fields.

Innovation of college pop music teaching in traditional music culture based on robot cognitive-emotional interaction model

Emotional computing and artificial psychology is a new research direction that has received increasing attention in the field of harmonious human-computer interaction and artificial intelligence and is also a new intersection of mathematics, information science, intelligence science, neuroscience, physiology, psychological science and other multidisciplinary intersection. The current problems and drawbacks in the teaching of popular music in colleges and universities, and the search for methods and measures to reform and innovate popular music education in colleges and universities are the difficulties of current music teaching work. In this paper, we try to apply a robot cognitive-emotional interaction model to college pop music teaching, and establish an emotional interaction model based on reinforcement learning with the help of cognitive-emotional computing of human-computer interaction, to be able to integrate emotional interaction in pop music teaching and to make an accurate emotional analysis of students' singing effect. Different from traditional music teaching methods, the robot-based cognitive-emotional interaction model established in this paper can establish an innovative teaching model for college pop music teaching and optimize the teaching effect.

Modulatory Effects of Ketamine and Lamotrigine on Cognition: Emotion Interaction in the Brain

Introduction: Cognition and emotion are fundamentally integrated in the brain and mutually contribute to behavior. The relation between working memory (WM) and emotion is particularly suited to investigate cognition-emotion interaction since WM is an essential component of many higher cognitive functions. Ketamine affects not only WM but also has a profound impact on emotional processing. Effects of acute ketamine challenge are sensitive to modulation by pretreatment with lamotrigine, which inhibits glutamate release. Accordingly, a combination of these approaches should be particularly suited to investigate cognition-emotion interaction. Methods: Seventy five healthy subjects were investigated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, single-dose, parallel-group study with three treatment conditions. All subjects underwent two scanning sessions (acute/post 24 h). Results: Compared to placebo, acute ketamine administration induced significant dissociative, psychotomimetic, and cognitive effects, as well as an increase in neural activity during WM for positive stimuli. Inhibition of glutamate release by pretreatment with lamotrigine did not influence ketamine’s subjective effects, but significantly attenuated its impact on emotional WM and associated neural activity. There was no effect on these measures 24 h after ketamine administration. Conclusion: Our results demonstrate differential acute effects of modulated glutamate release and a swift restoration of disturbed neurobehavioral homeostasis in healthy subjects.

Influences of Emotional Information on Response Inhibition in Gaming Disorder: Behavioral and ERP Evidence from Go/Nogo Task

Gaming disorder (GD) may impair executive functions such as response inhibition. According to the tripartite neurocognitive model, the interoceptive system generates a state of craving that exacerbates the dysfunction of GD. We speculate that emotional information may play an important role in the mechanism, which leads to impaired response inhibition in people with GD. A three-factor mixed experimental design was adopted in this go/nogo task. The between-subject factor was group (GD or control group), and the within-subject factors were two types of emotional information, task relevance (related or unrelated) and emotional valence (negative or positive). The GD group had lower nogo accuracies than the control group in the task-unrelated condition and also in the negative condition. Parallelly, the GD group showed faster reactions and lower accuracy in the go trials than the control group under task-unrelated negative conditions. At the neural level, the GD group had smaller amplitudes of nogo-N2 and larger amplitudes of nogo-P3 than the control group in the task-unrelated condition. The findings prove the hypothesis of this study that emotional information could be a factor leading to impaired response inhibition in GD individuals. The response inhibition abilities of GD are weakened when processing task-unrelated or negative information, which may be caused by failure of behavioral inhibition and weakened conflict control, resulting in more cognitive resources to complete response suppression under specific conditions. This study provides evidence for weaker response inhibition in GD individuals from the perspective of cognitive-emotional interaction and provides more detailed information for interventions for GD.

Clarifying the synergistic effects of emotion dysregulation and inhibitory control on physical aggression.

Rising rates of violence underscore the need to better understand how systems that regulate distress and impulse control jointly modulate aggression risk. The goals of the current study were to investigate the unique and interactive effects of emotional dysregulation and inhibitory control on the perpetration of physical aggression. We recruited a high-risk community sample of 206 adults (M/SDage =33.55/10.89 years old; 47.1% female) who reported a range of physically aggressive behaviors. All participants completed a self-report measure (Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale), neuropsychological testing (Color Word Interference Test), and clinical interviewing (Lifetime History of Aggression Interview), and a subset of individuals (n=134) underwent a neuroanatomical scan. As expected, the interplay of emotional and inhibitory control explained unique variance in physical aggression above and beyond their main effects. The positive association between emotion dysregulation and aggression strengthened as inhibitory control decreased. Cortical thickness in two right prefrontal clusters, one that peaked in the superior frontal gyrus and one that peaked in the caudal middle frontal gyrus, was also associated with the interactive effects of emotional dysregulation and inhibitory control. Notably, thickness in the superior frontal gyrus mediated the association between emotion dysregulation and physical aggression at low levels of inhibitory control. Using a multilevel and multimethod approach, the present study revealed neuroanatomical correlates of emotion-cognition interactions that have translational relevance to violence perpetration. These findings extend previous work primarily focused on functional-based neural assessments and point to the utility of examining neuroanatomical correlates of emotion-cognition interactions for understanding human aggression.

Inhibitory control effectiveness can be improved: The role of arousal, subjective significance and origin of words in modified Emotional Stroop Test.

The interference control measured in the Emotional Stroop Task is the phenomenon that gives us an insight into mechanisms of emotion-cognition interactions. Especially the role of dimensions of affect can be easily studied with this paradigm. In the current study, we were interested in the role of the complexity of emotional stimuli (origin). We also aimed at searching for activation-like factors that impair (arousal) or improve (subjective significance) the effectiveness of cognitive control. We have used an orthogonal manipulation of all the above dimensions in words. We expected to find the contrastive effects of arousal and subjective significance on reaction times and Event Related Potential’s amplitudes. On a behavioural level, we observed the reduction of reaction times with increasing subjective significance of stimuli and reflective origin. We also found a correlation between subjective significance and reduction of amplitude polarisation in the N450 component associated with cognitive control execution effort. This experiment shows that subjective significance has an improving role for cognitive control effectiveness, even when valence, arousal and origin levels are controlled. This guides us to conclude that external stimuli may drive not only disruption of control but also its improvement.

Micro-foundations of strategic decision-making in family business organisations: A cognitive neuroscience perspective

Emotion significantly affects strategic decision-making by entrepreneurs in family business organisations. This paper proposes a cognitive framework of strategic decision-making that emphasises the importance of emotion, based on a micro-foundational perspective: that is, an integrated hierarchy of cognitive processes underlying entrepreneurs' strategic decision-making and the interactions with external affective events. Previous studies that used traditional behavioural methodologies are reviewed with reference to the proposed cognitive framework to highlight importance of understanding effect of emotion-cognition interactions on entrepreneurs’ strategic decision-making process. New techniques using biological, physiological, and neuroscientific tools are then introduced as complementary methods for this line of research. Finally, future research directions are discussed with a focus on implicit cognitive processing, complex emotions, and cognitive interventions.

Electrophysiological correlates of interference control in the modified emotional Stroop task with emotional stimuli differing in valence, arousal, and subjective significance.

The role of emotional factors in maintaining cognitive control is one of the most intriguing issues in understanding emotion-cognition interactions. In the current experiment, we assessed the role of emotional factors (valence, arousal, and subjective significance) in perceptual and conceptual inhibition processes. We operationalised both processes with the classical cognitive paradigms, i.e., the flanker task and the emotional Stroop task merged into a single experimental procedure. The procedure was based on the presentation of emotional words displayed in four different font colours flanked by the same emotional word printed with the same or different font colour. We expected to find distinct effects of both types of interference: earlier for perceptual and later for emotional interference. We also predicted an increased arousal level to disturb inhibitory control effectiveness, while increasing the subjective significance level should improve this process. As we used orthogonal manipulations of emotional factors, our study allowed us for the first time to assess interactions within emotional factors and between types of interference. We found on the behavioural level the main effects of flanker congruency as well as effects of emotionality. On the electrophysiological level, we found effects for EPN, P2, and N450 components of ERPs. The exploratory analysis revealed that effects due to perceptual interference appeared earlier than the effects of emotional interference, but they lasted for an extended period of processing, causing perceptual and emotional interference to partially overlap. Finally, in terms of emotional interference, we showed the effect of subjective significance: the reduction of interference cost in N450 for highly subjective significant stimuli. This study is the first one allowing for the investigation of two different types of interference in a single experiment, and provides insight into the role of emotion in cognitive control.

Impact of emotionally-charged images and trial order on downstream cognitive processing: An ERP study

Theories of emotion-cognition interactions suggest that emotional valence can both facilitate or limit cognitive performance. One cause for the mixed findings may be the order (random versus non-random presentation) in which emotional stimuli are presented. To investigate the impact of stimuli order on cognitive control processing, EEG data were recorded as 130 undergraduate students (M age = 22.2, SD = 5.4; 79 female) completed a modified version of the AX-Continuous Performance Task in which the cue was followed by an emotionally-valenced image (positive, negative, and neutral). Specifically, the task was designed so that valenced images were presented in either a block or random order, prior to probe presentation. We examined two event-related potentials (ERPs), the N2, which reflects aspects of cognitive control, and the late positive potential (LPP), which reflects attention allocation to emotional stimuli. We assessed the impact of emotionally oriented attention (LPP) on downstream cognitive control (N2) and how this relationship might differ for a block versus random (order of emotional image) task design. Consistent with the LPP literature, we found a main effect of image valence with the negative trials showing larger LPPs than the positive and neutral trials. For N2s, we found that the negative trials were associated with smaller N2s than both the positive and neutral trials. We observed that as LPP amplitude increased, subsequent N2 amplitude was reduced, specifically for negative trials in the random design. These results suggest an emotion-related depletion of neural cognitive resources. Lastly, we found larger N2s for the block design versus the random design. Together, these results indicate the importance of paying attention to both trial order (block versus random) and within trial stimulus sequence when designing emotion induction tasks.

#3097 Temporal and spectral dynamics of reward and risk processing in the amygdala revealed with stereo-EEG recordings in epilepsy

Objectives/AimsTo examine the temporal and spectral characteristics of local field potentials recorded from the amygdala in epilepsy in the context of the anticipation and receipt of rewards and losses using an incentive learning task and a risky decision-making task.Methods16 Epilepsy patients completed two tasks. In the monetary incentive delay (MID) task, patients saw reward and loss cues which indicated whether money could be won or lost depending on whether a subsequent response was or was not quick/accurate enough, respectively. This was compared with neutral cues where responses were neither rewarded nor punished regardless of response.In the risk task, patients were presented with two face down cards with values ranging from 1 to 10. When the first card is revealed, patients have to choose whether to bet or not bet that the second card is higher. After the card is revealed, patients receive a monetary reward if it is higher and a loss if it is lower. If patients do not bet, they receive nothing.ResultsIn both tasks, patients showed larger left amygdala theta band oscillatory activity to the receipt of monetary rewards compared to no money. In contrast, there were no significant responses to monetary losses. During the decision phase of the risk task, there was increased theta activity when patients chose to bet instead of not betting and when the decision had low risk (card <= 5) compared to high risk (card above 5). There were no effects of uncertainty.ConclusionsThe combined results of these two studies embellish our understanding of the role of the amygdala in motivation and decision-making processes and lend further support for its role in reward related processes rather than its often cited fear-related functions (Baxter & Murray, 2002; Murray, 2007). Theta activation is linked to cognitive processes in frontal cortices and coupled to MTL activity (Helfrich & Knight, 2016). As left amygdala theta activation was only recruited when patients were making their bet and not just anticipating reward, the pattern of results lend support to its role in cognition-emotion interactions specific to risk and reward but not uncertainty. Indeed, the hemispheric asymmetry is highly consistent with EEG studies showing left prefrontal dominance in reward processing (Manssuer et al., 2021).

Cognitive Emotional Interaction Model of Robot Based on Reinforcement Learning

In order to enhance the cognitive emotional computing ability of robot, a cognitive emotional interaction model of robot based on reinforcement learning is proposed, which combines immediate feedback and long-term trend according to PAD(Pleasure-Arousal-Dominance) emotional space. Firstly, according to the psychology theory of interpersonal communication, the human emotion generation process is simulated to generate human-like emotions, and the three influencing factors of similarity, positivity and empathy are extracted. Secondly, the relationship between the response emotion+ state and the contexted long-term emotion state is established by using the global co-ordination feature of reinforcement learning, so as to model the robot emotion generation process. Then, three factors are incorporated into the model reward mechanism for the evaluate of the interactive emotion state, to update the model and get the optimal emotional strategy. Finally, the optimal emotional state corresponding to the obtained optimal emotional strategy is used to update the robot's emotional state transition probability, and based on the sentiment values of the six basic emotional states in space, them are mapped to continuous emotional space to get the optimal response emotional value of the robot. Subjective and objective comparison experiments show that the model in this paper can effectively increase the delicateness, continuity, positivity and empathy of the robot's emotional expression, and can effectively reduce the robot's dependence on external emotional stimuli, further improving the harmonious and friendly human-computer interaction.
