Knowledge of emergency management of avulsed tooth among undergraduate preclinical and clinical dental students: Questionnaire-based study

Background: Dental students in the community are considered as dentists and are expected or might be asked to provide emergency aid, especially when the problem related to the teeth as in the case of avulsion. Aim: The aim of this study is to assess and compare the knowledge and practice of 2nd- and 5th-year undergraduate dental students regarding management of tooth avulsion. Materials and Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study among registered and regular attendee 2nd- and 5th-year dental students from nine dental schools in Khartoum state. The study was conducted during period from November 2015 to February 2016. Sample size was 309 (186 from 2nd year and 98 from 5th year) out of total number of 1575. Participants were selected by systematic random sampling technique. Self-administered questionnaire was used to assess the knowledge of emergency management of avulsed tooth. Comparison between variables by Chi-square test with the level of significance set at P < 0.05. Results: Majority of 5th-year students have enough information about avulsion and its emergency management while very few of 2nd-year students have the correct knowledge. Only 12.4% of 2nd-year students mentioned the correct storage media where an avulsed tooth can be placed compared to 64.3% of 5th-year students. There was also no statistical significant difference of P = 0.186 when knowledge about avulsion in students who personally experienced dental trauma was compared to those who did not have an experience of dental trauma. Conclusion: Second-year undergraduate dental students had poor knowledge about emergency management of avulsed tooth. Experience of dental trauma and students gender have no significant association with the management of tooth avulsion.

Knowledge of Dental Practitioners Towards Emergency Management of Avulsed Tooth in Punjab

AbstractDental avulsion is characterized by the complete displacement of the tooth from its socket, with damage to the periodontal ligament, cementum, alveolar bone, gingival and pulp tissues. The ideal treatment for an avulsed permanent tooth is its immediate replantation into the socket. However, in spite of itsrecognized therapeutic value, clinical experience has shown that immediatereplantation rarely occurs due to factors associated to the accident itself, complex damage to the recipient site, or simply lack of knowledgeor confidence of the general population and even professionals about Replantation procedures. The present study was carried out with an aim to assess the level of knowledge of emergency management of avulsed teeth among 209 Dental practitioners in the state of Punjab. The received questionnaires were analysed for the responses. The data showed that the knowledge of dental practitioners in the state was not up to date and efforts should be made to carry out various education programs for the same.

Components of expertise of public officials in emergency management in Korea: An exploratory study

This study attempted to identify the components of expertise of public officials working in emergency management. For this purpose, a Delphi survey was conducted to ascertain the views of public officials in emergency management regarding the components of expertise. Results showed that public officials in emergency management in the central government considered the most necessary component as horizontal collaboration ability with government organizations on the same level. Public officials working in emergency management in local government considered on the job experience in emergency management the most needed component. Regarding the stage of emergency management, public officials in charge of prevention and preparedness considered professional knowledge of emergency management theory/technology the most necessary. For those in charge of response, shrewd judgment ability was most required, while those in charge of recovery considered on the job experience in emergency management the most required. In terms of the position of public officials, higher-ranked public officials in emergency management regarded fast decision-making capability as most important, whereas lower-ranked public officials in emergency management regarded on the job experience in emergency management or job responsibility as most important.

Knowledge of Dentists on the Management of Tooth Avulsion Injuries in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

To evaluate dentists' professional experience and knowledge of emergency management of tooth avulsion injuries in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A total of 100 questionnaires were evaluated. The first part of the questionnaire consisted of questions regarding personal information. The second part evaluated dentists' knowledge of emergency management in cases of dental avulsion. The responses for each question were counted and expressed as percentages. All dentists had a college degree or above. Only three dentists had a Master's or PhD degree. Most of the dentists (94.5%) considered time and storage media important for the prognosis of avulsed teeth. However, the dentists did not show consistent responses about the adequate time and ideal storage media to transport avulsed teeth. The study highlighted Brazilian dentists' need for continuing education in order to improve current knowledge in emergency management of avulsed teeth.

Knowledge of Emergency Management of Traumatized Teeth among Schoolteachers in Mashhad, Iran.

Background and aims. Dental trauma is an important oral health problem in children that requires immediate and appropriate management for long term success. The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge of elementary school teachers about emergency management of traumatic dental injuries in children.Materials and methods. A total of 163 teachers from 21 elementary schools from Mashhad, Iran participated in this study. Data were collected using a two-part questionnaire comprised of questions regarding demographic data and participants' knowledge about dental trauma.Results. The level of the teachers' knowledge was moderate (53.3%). Of the 163 participants, 104 (63.8%) were females and 59 (36.2%) were males. Among several predictors that were surveyed in this study, only the age of respondents signifi-cantly impacted the teachers' knowledge (P = 0.004).Conclusion. The results of this study showed the moderate level of knowledge of teachers regarding emergency manage-ment of traumatized teeth. Adding dental trauma management courses in the teacher training curriculum and requiring teachers to be updated in regards to this issue can improve their knowledge and thus led to better management of traumatic dental injuries in children.

Effectiveness of educational poster on knowledge of emergency management of dental trauma--part 2: cluster randomised controlled trial for secondary school students.

ObjectiveTo investigate the effectiveness of educational poster on improving secondary school students' knowledge of emergency management of dental trauma.MethodsA cluster randomised controlled trial was conducted. 16 schools with total 671 secondary students who can read Chinese or English were randomised into intervention (poster, 8 schools, 364 students) and control groups (8 schools, 305 students) at the school level. Baseline knowledge of dental trauma was obtained by a questionnaire. Poster containing information of dental trauma management was displayed in a classroom for 2 weeks in each school in the intervention group whereas in the control group there was no display of such posters. Students of both groups completed the same questionnarie after 2 weeks.ResultsTwo-week display of posters improved the knowledge score by 1.25 (p-value = 0.0407) on average.ConclusionEducational poster on dental trauma management significantly improved the level of knowledge of secondary school students in Hong Kong.Trial Registration HKClinicalTrial.com HKCTR-1343 ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01809457

Knowledge of emergency management of avulsed tooth among Japanese dental students.

BackgroundThe management of the avulsion of deciduous and permanent teeth in children is well outlined in the guidelines of the International Association of Dental Traumatology and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. However, little information is available about the level of knowledge in the management of dental trauma among undergraduate dental students in Japan. The objective of this study is to explore dental students’ level of educational knowledge in the management of avulsed teeth.MethodsA three-part questionnaire was used to gather demographic data and evaluate the knowledge of students at Kyushu Dental University.ResultsQuestionnaire data were collected from 121 (53 first-year, 68 sixth-year) students. Regarding the immediate emergency management of a case in which a 9-year-old girl had fallen down the stairs and lost a maxillary incisor but remained conscious, 55.9% of sixth year students and 28.3% of first-year students suggested the immediate transportation of the tooth to a dentist. The answer selected by the largest number (50.9%) of first-year respondents was “sideline the injured girl and get her to bite on a tissue paper for several hours”. In a case in which a boy had an avulsed tooth after falling down on a road, only 13.2% of first-year students suggested the transportation of the tooth in his mouth to the clinic. Most the largest number of respondents believed that the best way to transport an avulsed tooth to the dental clinic was to “wrap it in dry tissue paper”.ConclusionsThese results suggest that education in first aid for accidents that occur outside dental clinics or hospitals is insufficient. Japanese dentists and dental educations must immediately improve the utilization of the guidelines for dental trauma and the education of undergraduate students and patients in the management of dental trauma using an integrated approach.

A Survey on Hong Kong Secondary School Students' Knowledge of Emergency Management of Dental Trauma

ObjectivesTo investigate Hong Kong secondary school students' knowledge of emergency management of dental trauma.MethodA questionnaire survey on randomly selected secondary school students using cluster sampling.ResultsOnly 36.6% (209/571) of the respondents were able to correctly identify the appropriate place for treatment of dental injury. 55.2% of the respondents knew the suitable time for treatment. Only 24.7% of the respondents possessed the knowledge of how to correctly manage fractured teeth. Only 23.6% of them knew how to manage displaced teeth. 62.5% of them correctly answered that knocked-out deciduous teeth should not be replanted to the original position, but few of them (23.6%) knew that permanent teeth should be replanted. Moreover, 37.1% of the respondents correctly identified at least one of the appropriate media for storing a knocked-out tooth. First-aid training and acquisition of dental injury information from other sources were significant factors that positive responses from these questions would lead to higher scores.ConclusionHong Kong secondary school students' knowledge of emergency management of dental trauma is considered insufficient. An educational campaign in secondary schools dedicated to students is recommended. Prior first-aid training and acquisition of dental injury information from other sources positively relate to the level of knowledge. Dental trauma emergency management is recommended to be added to first-aid publications and be taught to students and health professionals.Trial Registration: Hong Kong Clinical Trial Centre HKCTR-1344

Effectiveness of Educational Poster on Knowledge of Emergency Management of Dental Trauma–Part 1. Cluster Randomised Controlled Trial for Primary and Secondary School Teachers

ObjectiveTo investigate the effectiveness of educational posters in improving the knowledge level of primary and secondary school teachers regarding emergency management of dental trauma.MethodsA cluster randomised controlled trial was conducted. 32 schools with a total of 515 teachers were randomised into intervention (poster) and control groups at the school level. Teachers’ baseline levels of knowledge about dental trauma were obtained by using a questionnaire. Posters containing information on dental trauma management were displayed in the school medical room, the common room used by staff, and on a notice board for 2 weeks in each school of the intervention group; in the control group, no posters were displayed. Teachers in both groups completed the questionnaire after 2 weeks.ResultsThe teachers in the intervention schools (where posters were displayed for 2 weeks) showed statistically significant improvement in scores in cases where they had not previously learned about dental emergencies from sources other than first aid training, with an average score increase of 2.6656 (score range of questionnaire, −13 to 9; p-value <0.0001).ConclusionEducational posters on the management of dental trauma can significantly improve the level of knowledge of primary and secondary school teachers in Hong Kong. Knowledge and attitude of Saudi teachers of students with attention‐deficit hyperactivity disorder towards traumatic dental injuries

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common childhood mental disorders that manifest with difficulties in staying focused and hyperactivity. Such children have been reported to have a higher incidence of traumatic dental injuries. The aim of this article was to study the knowledge and attitude of Saudi teachers of children with ADHD towards the management of traumatic dental injuries and compare them to their counterparts in mainstream schools. A four-part structured Arabic questionnaire was administered to 281 teachers of children with ADHD and 384 teachers in mainstream schools. The questionnaire recorded the demographic data, type of children taught, experience of the teacher in dealing with traumatic dental injuries, the teachers' perceived importance of managing traumatic dental injuries and their knowledge of emergency management of these injuries. The difference in knowledge and attitude between teachers of mainstream schools and schools for children with ADHD was assessed. The results of the study indicate that teachers of children with ADHD have a greater experience of witnessing traumatic dental injuries and place significantly more importance towards the management of these injuries than their counterparts in mainstream schools. The influence of demographic variables on knowledge seen in teachers from mainstream schools is absent in those teaching children with ADHD.

Knowledge of Emergency Management of Avulsed Teeth Among General Dentists in Kathmandu

An avulsed permanent tooth is one of the most emergency situations in dentistry. Dentists handling the situation should have adequate knowledge in this field. To assess the level of knowledge of emergency management of avulsed teeth among general dentists in Kathmandu. A questionnaire containing 10 close ended questions about emergency management of avulsed teeth was distributed among 102 general dental practitioners working in different private dental hospitals and clinics of Kathmandu. The dental hospital and clinics were randomly selected. This cross sectional study was conducted between January 2012 to February 2012. Among the studied group, almost all of the participants, 98(96.1%) said that an avulsed permanent tooth cannot be replanted in all cases. Majority of them, 63 (61.8%) said that the critical time for the replantation is within 20 minutes. General dentists of Kathmandu did not have adequate knowledge about emergency management of avulsed teeth. An education program should be conducted to increase the knowledge of general dentists in the management of traumatic injuries to teeth.

Pre-hospital emergency burn management in Shanghai: Analysis of 1868 burn patients

BackgroundThere are few studies reporting the level of pre-hospital emergency management of burn patients and related influencing factors in China. This study is a summary of our investigation on emergency education and people's awareness about pre-hospital emergency management of burn patients in Shanghai, China, and analyses key factors influencing pre-hospital emergency management of burn patients. MethodsThe survey was conducted by questionnaire in burn patients who sought initial clinical visits at the Burn Center of Changhai Hospital (Shanghai, China) between November 2009 and December 2010, including demographic data, burn conditions, pre-hospital emergency management and education about emergency burn management. Data were statistically treated by SPSS software. ResultsAltogether 1868 effective questionnaire forms were collected; 33.9% of these burn patients received cooling treatment before admission and 32.2% of them used ‘folk remedies’ or antibiotics to treat the wound surface. Only 12.2% of these burn patients had received education about the knowledge of emergency management, mainly through public media (38.2%), relatives and friends (24.6%), Internet (15.8%), workplace (11.4%) and schools (10.1%). The result of logistic regression analysis showed that emergency education, especially via Internet and workplace, played an important role in pre-hospital emergency management, and that different channels of emergency education affected different age groups of people: network and unit education mainly affected young adults, while relatives and friends mainly affected elderly people. In addition, educational level was an important factor favourably affecting ‘cooling therapy’. ConclusionsThe level of emergency burn management and related education is relatively low in China at present, and it is therefore necessary to intensify education about pre-hospital emergency management to raise the level of emergency burn management. At the same time, more attention should be paid to age- and population-specific education. Finally, universal emergency education should be included in the national basic education as a long-term strategy.

A Method of Emergency Management based on Knowledge Element Theory

According to the current situation in emergency management of the low utilization and slow search for emergency document knowledge result to the efficiency in making decisions. This paper aims to solve the problem of difficult in searching needed knowledge in emergency management. F rom the perspective of knowledge system engineering, this paper conduct s an in-depth study on knowledge-mined model of emergency documents and offer s an alternative for decision-makers to locate and use emergency document knowledge more quickly and efficiently by emergency document knowledge modeling based on knowledge element. This modeling process includes the analysis of physical and logical structure, the navigation link based on knowledge element and the knowledge reasoning and retrieval. The physical analysis aims to extract the metadata and structure the documents; the logical analysis intends to classify the knowledge element into three types, namely the event-based knowledge element, the subject-based knowledge element, and the task-based knowledge element; and the navigation link targets at establishing the link between the knowledge and the structured document . At last, we propose a prototype of emergency knowledge decision supporting system for verifying the validity of its application, of which the results indicate that the modeling approach is both practical and effective.

Taking advantage of collective knowledge in emergency response systems

When large groups work on a theme, they have the potential to produce a lot of useful knowledge, regardless of whether they are acting in a coordinated manner or individually. Spontaneously generated information has received much attention in recent years, as organizations and businesses discover the power of crowds. New technologies, such as blogs, Twitter, wikis, photo sharing, collaborative tagging and social networking sites, enable the creation and dissemination of content in a relatively simple way. As a result, the aggregate body of knowledge is growing at an accelerated rate. Many organizations are looking for ways to harness this power, which is being called collective intelligence. Research has shown that it is possible to obtain high quality results from collectively produced work. In this paper, we consider the domain of emergency response. Research has shown that individuals respond quickly and massively to emergencies, and that they try to help with the situation. Thus, it seems like a logical step to attempt to harness collective knowledge for emergency management. Disaster relief groups and field command frequently suffer from lack of up to date information, which may be critical in a rapidly evolving situation. Some of this information could be generated by the crowd at large, enabling more effective response to the situation. In this paper, we discuss the possibilities for the introduction of collective knowledge in disaster relief and present architecture and examples of how this could be accomplished.

Knowledge of emergency management of avulsed teeth among a sample of Egyptian parents

Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) frequently occur in society and may occur at home. The ultimate prognosis of an avulsed tooth occurring in a child may depend on the parents’ knowledge of appropriate emergency measures. Therefore this study aimed at evaluating the knowledge level of a sample of Egyptian parents in the management of a case of tooth avulsion in a child. A total of 985 parents attending a Pediatric Dental Clinic formed the sample of the study. A questionnaire comprising 13 questions in simple Arabic language was used. The parents were categorized into two groups according to their education level. The tabulated data were statistically analyzed using the Chi-square test. Markedly low knowledge levels were noted in both groups. This was evidenced in replanting the avulsed primary teeth, brushing and using antiseptics to clean the roots, holding the root instead of the crown, dry storage of the avulsed permanent teeth, and neglect over time from most of the parents. However, 24.3% of group 1 and 15.6% of group 2 chose milk as a transport medium. Therefore, educational programs would be necessary to improve awareness of the immediate management of avulsed teeth.
