IEEE Division IV Update

Until I became President of the EMC Society and started attending the TAB (Technical Activities Board) meetings, I knew virtually nothing about TAB or Division IV. A fact that I'm not entirely proud of, but one I suspect is shared by many people reading this article.

Call for EMC Society Awards Nominations: Nominations Due: February 15, 2023

Our Society is successful because of the many volunteers who contribute their time and energy for the good of the EMC Society and their fellow EMC colleagues. The IEEE EMC Society sponsors a number of awards to recognize those people who have made significant contributions to the Society and/or the EMC profession. These awards are presented at the awards luncheon held during the annual symposium. Next year, the awards will be presented on August 3 during the 2023 IEEE International Symposium on EMC+SIPI scheduled from July 31 to August 4 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Chapter Chatter

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer! And it is great to see that many of our EMC Chapters are finally able to get together in person. It's been a couple of years since many of our Chapters have met so its nice that we are getting one step closer to getting back to normal. I want to thank the Chapter leadership and the speakers for making these events happen. Without you, it would not be possible! And keep in mind that the EMC Society has an excellent selection of speakers in our Distinguished Lecturer (DL) program so don't hesitate to reach out to them if you would like to have one of them speak at your Chapter meeting. Young Professionals EMC — Get Ready to Meet In Person in Spokane!

At the 2022 International Symposium on EMC+SIPI, EMC Society Young Professionals (YPs) will once again be hosting a few fun and exciting events. ALL EMC Society members and attendees of the Symposium are welcome (not only the YPs!).

President's Message

It is my distinct pleasure to deliver my first message as the President of the EMC Society. I received the official gavel from Dr. Alistair Duffy at the 2022 December Board Meeting held in Charleston, SC. Alistair has been such a great leader, an inspiration, and above all a great friend. I cannot imagine anyone more qualified to handle the Office of President during the unprecedented times of the pandemic, which took its course for almost his entire presidency. Even with such challenges, we were able to accomplish quite a lot due to the support team of excellent volunteers including the EMC Society's Executive Committee and IEEE staff.

EMC Standards

If you attend the 2022 IEEE International Symposium on EMC+SIPI in Spokane, Washington from August 1 to 5, be on the lookout for amateur radio call signs! Amateur operators, also known as “ham radio” operators, are plentiful in the EMC Society. Many registrants have their call signs printed right on their registration badges. This shows that amateur radio is still a powerful contributor to the advancement of the state of the art, as hams bring the RF skills they learn by experimenting with transmitters, receivers, antennas, and propagation to the art of EMC.

Completed Careers

As (the relatively new) Associate Editor of this column, I suffer conflicting emotions. It is sad to say goodbye to colleagues who have helped shape our profession and the EMC Society. However, it does bring joy to see what they have achieved and/or the stories behind their amazing lives. Sometimes, we may know some of these people ourselves, and know them well. Sometimes, we recognize the name only. Sometimes, the person is new to us. However, there is no such thing as an ordinary life or an ordinary person. Every life and every completed career provides a fascinating window into this.

Announcing the 2022 John Howard Memorial EMC Education Grant Winners!

The John Howard Memorial EMC Education Grant is the EMC Society's flagship tool for enabling others to enhance educational opportunities in EMC. Last year, in hopes of broadening the impact of the grant, the EMC Society increased the size of the grant to $10,000 USD over two years and modified the call for proposals to allow applicants to pursue a wide variety of non-profit educational activities, from developing a course, to outreach, to development of textbooks and software, to modest support of laboratory equipment, and more. The response from the EMC community was fantastic, and we received nine high-quality educational grant proposals in 2022. We had so many great proposals, in fact, that the Society decided to make not just one, but two awards!

Welcome back to Chapter Chatter! I hope everyone had a nice summer break and for those of you lucky enough to make it to our symposium in Spokane, Washington, it was great seeing you there! It had been three years since we had an in-person IEEE International EMC+SIPI Symposium so there was a ton of catching up to do with our fellow EMC Society members. It was also nice seeing a new generation of EMC engineers attend and hearing it was their first symposium! Hopefully, it will not be their last. Make sure to see the Call for Papers next year's symposium in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and plan to attend. See the symposium ad on pages 70–72.

EMC Personality Profile

With this Personality Profile, I would like to introduce you to Nicolas Mora, one of our current EMC Society Distinguished Lecturers. The first time I remember meeting him personally and listening to his presentation was in Toulouse, France at the EUROEM 2012 conference. As both of us were working and interested in high-power electromagnetics, we subsequently met at several locations and events around the world. Currently Nicolas Mora is the Director of the EM Effects Division of the Directed Energy Research Centre of the Technology Innovation Institute (DERC-TII) in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. He was born in Bogota, Colombia and started his professional life in engineering by studying Electronics Engineering at the National University of Colombia. Nicolas received a degree in Electronics Engineering in 2007 and an M.Sc. degree (Hons.) in Electrical Engineering with a major in High Voltage Engineering in 2009, both from the National University of Colombia.

Presidents of the EMC Society

There have been 38 Presidents of the EMC Society since its founding in 1957. The current President is Vignesh Rajamani who is serving a two-year term of office encompassing 2022 and 2023.
