The temper embrittlement of a susceptible Ni-Cr steel modifies the internal fric tion spectrum: the Snaek and dislocation peaks disappear, whereas the grain boundary dam;ing is increased, between 400° and 600°C. This latter characteristic permits one to follow isothermally the embrittling reaction and to establish a correlation between the increment of internal friction and the progressive shifting of the transition temperature. This paper shows that internal friction, since it does not present the disadvantages of a destructive test, is a versatile tool to analyze the phenomenon within the embrittlement zone and to compare indirectly the inherent grain boundary segregation. Finally, a brief examination of the corresponding variations in shear modulus establishes that although temper brittleness is mainly related with phenomena occurring at or near grain boundaries, it also affects the matrix.
