Report of the National Formulary Antianemia Preparations Advisory Board

THE National Formulary Antianemia Preparations Advisory Board was established April 17, 1959. This Board consists of 5 members, Dr. Steven O. Schwartz, Chairman; Dr. Anita B. Robbins, Secretary; Dr. Paul S. Hagen; Dr. Wayne Rundles, and Dr. Louis R. Wasserman. Preparations intended for treatment of pernicious anemia by oral administration require approval of this Board. One N. F. Unit of Liver Extract, Liver Solution, Liver with Stomach, or Powdered Stomach is defined as that amount of an otherwise acceptable product which has been shown to produce, when administered daily by mouth, clinical and hematologic responses, that are considered by the Board to be satisfactory, in patients with addisonian pernicious anemia. The method of obtaining the necessary clinical data and approval of these products is described in the section under Evaluation of Oral Liver and Stomach Preparations, in the First Interim Revision Announcement to the Eleventh Edition of the National Formulary.

The Clinical Examination of the Nervous System.

The appearance of the eleventh edition of this book is evidence of its wide acceptance as a standard text with reference to the neurological examination. The book has become progressively longer with succeeding editions, which has somewhat reduced its value as an undergraduate textbook. The content is largely derived from the author's own clinical experience. There are sections on neuroradiology, electroencephalography, electromyography, and cerebrospinal fluid examination, which are brief and are more fully covered in other texts. There is little emphasis on the analysis of neurological signs in neuroanatomical or neurophysiological terms. The most valuable sections are those which deal with the techniques of the neurological examination and the clinical interpretation of neurological signs. The monograph is not intended to be a text on neurology, but it is especially valuable to the medical student for use as a preparation for clinical neurology and as a guide to the clinician interested
