A gender-specific intervention for at-risk women in the USA

Women are the fastest growing group in the USA to become infected with HIV. Also, the mode of transmission is changing with heterosexual behaviour being the predominant source. As these changes occur, HIV infection becomes more common in women who have not typically been considered at high risk. This paper describes an intervention designed to decrease unsafe sexual encounters and to focus on a highly meaningful concern in the lives of these women: relationships with men. The sessions encouraged making decisions, choice, partner selection, sexual rights, refusal of any unwanted sex, female controlled methods and other elements of empowerment. An eight-session and a four-session curriculum were created to assess dose factors as well.

Elements of empowerment and MS patients.

Elements of empowerment are: cognitive, experiential, ethical, social, biophysiological, functional and economic. Empirical data from 64 Finnish multiple sclerosis patients were collected. Based on the data, the social element is the most dominating element of empowerment. Patient-center research in nursing care of MS patients should be done to facilitate MS patients abilities toward empowerment.

Nurses and neuroleptic medication: applying theory to a working relationship with clients and their families.

This paper presents a model for the nursing management of the effects of neuroleptic or antipsychotic medication. The model addresses the contemporary issues facing nurses, their clients and families, while at the same time is congruent with the continua of effects of these medications. For many, nonadherence is directly related to undesired side effects, while for others the reasons may be multidimensional. The proposed model addresses the notion of advocacy and empowerment in the light of interventions that relate to the undesired-desired effects continuum. Underpinning this is the notion of the phases of the nurse-client relationship, which were advocated by Peplau (1952) and have since offered a framework for nursing intervention. While developing the phases of this relationship, nurses can help the client and family by assuming various roles that can enhance the relationship. It is suggested that each of these roles has an element of advocacy and an element of empowerment. It is part of the nurses' professional responsibility to help the client and their family to deal with the issues surrounding medication nonadherence.

The RN-BSN Student: Developing a Model of Empowerment

Nursing practice is being redefined. Today's graduating nurse is practicing in a tomorrow full of unknowns. The relevancy of traditional nursing education is being questioned in today's health care climate of crisis. In an attempt to prepare the graduating RN-BSN student to cope with these changes, nurse educators developed a process of empowerment. The framework for this effort was derived from the curriculum revolution, adult learning theory and empowerment research. The faculty defined empowerment as both an interpersonal process and an outcome. A graphic model has been created consisting of the four elements of empowerment: collegiality, communication, autonomy and accountability. Learning experiences are selected based upon these four elements. Teaching strategies are identified. Positive changes in student behavior have been reported anecdotally. The faculty are beginning the next phase: designing a research project to investigate behavior changes related to this empowerment model.

Putting Empowerment to Work in the Classroom

At Sinte Gleska University, a tribal college on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation, we are empowering students through our teaching methods and curricular choices. Three areas have been identified as important ingredients in empowering students: validating culture, teaching to learning styles, and utilizing teaching strategies resulting in self-directed learning. These three elements of empowerment can open up avenues of knowledge that have been previously closed to students on the Rosebud Reservation. As students discover that knowledge is powerful, they begin to learn because they want to. Change in the fundamental ways we view ourselves as teachers is necessary in order to empower students. In addition, changes in the way we teach, assess, and interact can have a profound impact on our students.

Here, empowerment is defined as increased intrinsic task motivation, and our subsequent model identifies four cognitions (task assessments) as the basis for worker empowerment: sense of impact, competence, meaningfulness, and choice. Adopting an interpretive perspective, we have used the model also to describe cognitive processes through which workers reach these conclusions. Central to the processes we describe are workers' interpretive styles and global beliefs. Both preliminary evidence for the model and general implications for research are discussed.

Localisation of factor XIII in human tissues using an immunoperoxidase technique.

An immunoperoxidase technique has been used to localise clotting factor XIII subunits A and S in human tissues. The presence of factor XIII in placenta and megakaryocytes was confirmed. Factor XIII was also found in fibroblasts, a hitherto unreported finding. Factor XIII subunits were not detected in hepatocytes, although factor XIII was found in fibroblasts in portal tracts. These findings suggest that factor XIII is not synthesised in the liver as previously thought.
