The GALAH survey: elemental abundances in open clusters using joint effective temperature and surface gravity photometric priors

ABSTRACT The ability to measure precise and accurate stellar effective temperatures (Teff) and surface gravities (log (g)) is essential in determining accurate and precise abundances of chemical elements in stars. Measuring log (g) from isochrones fitted to colour–magnitude diagrams of open clusters is significantly more accurate and precise compared to spectroscopic log (g). By determining the ranges of ages, metallicity, and extinction of isochrones that fit the colour–magnitude diagram, we constructed a joint probability distribution of Teff and log (g). The joint photometric probability shows the complex correlations between Teff and log (g), which depend on the evolutionary stage of the star. We show that by using this photometric prior while fitting spectra, we can acquire more precise spectroscopic stellar parameters and abundances of chemical elements. This reveals higher-order abundance trends in open clusters like traces of atomic diffusion. We used photometry and astrometry provided by the Gaia DR3 catalogue, Padova isochrones, and Galactic Archaeology with HERMES (GALAH) DR4 spectra. We analysed the spectra of 1979 stars in nine open clusters, using MCMC to fit the spectroscopic abundances of 26 elements, Teff, log (g), vmic, and vbroad. We found that using photometric priors improves the accuracy of abundances and log (g), which enables us to view higher order trends of abundances caused by atomic diffusion in M67 and Ruprecht 147.

Stellar elemental abundances constraining nucleosynthesis and chemical evolution of the universe

Measurements of elemental abundances of stars in the Milky Way and surrounding dwarf galaxies in the past few decades have been providing useful constraints on modeling the nucleosynthesis and chemical evolution. Recent large spectroscopic surveys combined with studies on dynamical motions of stars in the Milky Way reveal connections between chemical enrichment and galaxy formation. This paper provides a brief overview of the recent update of the understanding of the distribution of elemental abundances and remaining issues for key elements, mostly focusing on the low metallicity range which should reflect nucleosynthesis by massive stars and early chemical evolution. This covers the abundance ratios of α-elements, iron-peak elements, and neutron-capture elements which have been measured for a large number of metal-poor stars.

H. Lawrence Helfer (1929–2021)

Helfer carried out fundamental, groundbreaking studies of the elemental abundances in stars during the 1950s and 1960s. His scientific interests extended from highly theoretical work to observational investigations in radio, infrared, and optical astronomy.

The Southern Stellar Stream Spectroscopic Survey (S5): Chemical Abundances of Seven Stellar Streams

Abstract We present high-resolution Magellan/MIKE spectroscopy of 42 red giant stars in seven stellar streams confirmed by the Southern Stellar Stream Spectroscopic Survey (S 5): ATLAS, Aliqa Uma, Chenab, Elqui, Indus, Jhelum, and Phoenix. Abundances of 30 elements have been derived from over 10,000 individual line measurements or upper limits using photometric stellar parameters and a standard LTE analysis. This is currently the most extensive set of element abundances for stars in stellar streams. Three streams (ATLAS, Aliqa Uma, and Phoenix) are disrupted metal-poor globular clusters, although only weak evidence is seen for the light-element anticorrelations commonly observed in globular clusters. Four streams (Chenab, Elqui, Indus, and Jhelum) are disrupted dwarf galaxies, and their stars display abundance signatures that suggest progenitors with stellar masses ranging from 106 to 107 M ⊙. Extensive description is provided for the analysis methods, including the derivation of a new method for including the effect of stellar parameter correlations on each star’s abundance and uncertainty. This paper includes data gathered with the 6.5 m Magellan Telescopes located at Las Campanas Observatory, Chile.

Extreme brightness laser-based neutron pulses as a pathway for investigating nucleosynthesis in the laboratory

With the much-anticipated multi-petawatt (PW) laser facilities that are coming online, neutron sources with extreme fluxes could soon be in reach. Such sources would rely on spallation by protons accelerated by the high-intensity lasers. These high neutron fluxes would make possible not only direct measurements of neutron capture and β-decay rates related to the r-process of nucleosynthesis of heavy elements, but also such nuclear measurements in a hot plasma environment, which would be beneficial for s-process investigations in astrophysically relevant conditions. This could, in turn, finally allow possible reconciliation of the observed element abundances in stars and those derived from simulations, which at present show large discrepancies. Here, we review a possible pathway to reach unprecedented neutron fluxes using multi-PW lasers, as well as strategies to perform measurements to investigate the r- and s-processes of nucleosynthesis of heavy elements in cold matter, as well as in a hot plasma environment.

Light Chemical Elements in Stars: Mysteries and Unsolved Problems

The first eight elements of the periodic table are discussed: H, He, Li, Be, B, C, N, and O. They are referred to as key elements, given their important role in stellar evolution. It is noteworthy that all of them were initially synthesized in the Big Bang. The primordial abundances of these elements calculated using the Standard Model of the Big Bang (SMBB) are presented in this review. The good agreement between the SMBB and observations of the primordial abundances of the isotopes of hydrogen and helium, D, 3He, and 4He, is noted, but there is a difference of ~0.5 dex for lithium (the isotope 7Li) between the SMBB and observations of old stars in the galactic halo that has not yet been explained. The abundances of light elements in stellar atmospheres depends on the initial rotation velocity, so the typical rotation velocities of young Main Sequence (MS) stars are examined. Since the data on the abundances of light elements in stars are very extensive, the main emphasis in this review is on several unsolved problems. The helium abundance He/H in early B-type of the MS stars shows an increment with age; in particular, for the most massive B stars with masses M = 12−19M⦿, He/H increases by more than a factor of two toward the end of the MS. Theoretical models of stars with rotation cannot explain such a large increase in He/H. For early B- and late O-type MS stars that are components of close binary systems, He/H undergoes a sharp jump in the middle of the MS stage that is a mystery for the theory. The anomalous abundance of helium (and lithium) in the atmospheres of chemically peculiar stars (types He-s, He-w, HgMn, Ap, and Am) is explained in terms of the diffusion of atoms in surface layers of the stars, but this hypothesis cannot yet explain all the features of the chemical composition of these stars. The abundances of lithium, beryllium, and boron in FGK-dwarfs manifest a trend with decreasing effective temperature T eff as well as a dip at T eff ~ 6600 K in the Hyades and other old clusters. The two effects are among the unsolved problems. In the case of lithium, there is special interest in FGK-giants and supergiants that are rich in lithium (they have logε(Li)≥ 2). Most of them cannot be explained in terms of the standard theory of stellar evolution, so nonstandard hypotheses are invoked: the recent synthesis of lithium in a star and the engulfment by a star of a giant planet with mass equal to that of Jupiter or greater. An analysis of the abundances of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen in early B- and late O-stars of the MS indicates that the C II, N II, and O II ions are overionized in their atmospheres. For early B-type MS stars, good agreement is found between observations of the N/O ratio and model calculations for rotating stars. A quantitative explanation of the well-known “nitrogen-oxygen” anticorrelation in FGK-giants and supergiants is found. It reflects the dependence of the anomalies in N and C on the initial rotation velocity V0. The stellar rotation models which yield successful explanations for C, N. and O cannot, however, explain the observed helium enrichment in early B-type MS stars.

Chempy: A flexible chemical evolution model for abundance fitting

Elemental abundances of stars are the result of the complex enrichment history of their galaxy. Interpretation of observed abundances requires flexible modeling tools to explore and quantify the information about Galactic chemical evolution (GCE) stored in such data. Here we present Chempy, a newly developed code for GCE modeling, representing a parametrized open one-zone model within a Bayesian framework. A Chempy model is specified by a set of 5-10 parameters that describe the effective galaxy evolution along with the stellar and star-formation physics: e.g. the star-formation history, the feedback efficiency, the stellar initial mass function (IMF) and the incidence of supernova type Ia (SN Ia). Unlike established approaches, Chempy can sample the posterior probability distribution in the full model parameter space and test data-model matches for different nucleosynthetic yield sets. We extend Chempy to a multi-zone scheme. As an illustrative application, we show that interesting parameter constraints result from only the ages and elemental abundances of Sun, Arcturus and the present-day interstellar medium (ISM). For the first time, we use such information to infer IMF parameter via GCE modeling, where we properly marginalize over nuisance parameters and account for different yield sets. We find that of the IMF $11.6_{-1.6}^{+2.1}$ % explodes as core-collapse SN, compatible with Salpeter 1955. We also constrain the incidence of SN Ia per 10^3 Msun to 0.5-1.4. At the same time, this Chempy application shows persistent discrepancies between predicted and observed abundances for some elements, irrespective of the chosen yield set. These cannot be remedied by any variations of Chempy's parameters and could be an indication for missing nucleosynthetic channels. Chempy should be a powerful tool to confront predictions from stellar nucleosynthesis with far more complex abundance data sets.

High-precision abundances of elements in stars with asteroseismic ages

AbstractHigh-precision abundances of elements have been derived from HARPS-N spectra of F and G main-sequence stars having ages determined from oscillation frequencies delivered by the Kepler mission. The tight relations between abundance ratios of refractory elements, e.g., [Mg/Fe] and [Y/Mg], and stellar age previously found for solar twin stars are confirmed. These relations provide new information on nucleosynthesis and Galactic evolution. Abundance ratios between volatile and refractory elements, e.g., [C/Fe] and [O/Fe], show on the other hand a significant scatter at a given age, which may be related to planet-star interactions. This is a potential problem for chemical tagging studies.

A new r-process star with low abundances of r-process elements

Metal-poor stars with measurable r-process element abundances provide key clues to the production site(s) of the r-process and how its products are mixed with the surrounding medium. While the number of stars exhibiting strong enhancements of r-process elements has grown over the years, the lower “floor” of r-process enrichment in metal-poor stars has yet to be established, largely in part due to the difficulty in detecting weak neutron-capture element absorption lines in stellar spectra. Here we present detailed abundances of 16 neutron-capture elements for a star exhibiting the lowest level of r-process enrichment yet detected and still following the solar system r-process pattern. Taken into consideration with most of the r- process enriched stars currently in the literature, the range of r-process element enrichment spanned by this sample is at least ∼1.3dex or a factor of more than 20. That the r-process abundance pattern is unchanged while the degree of enrichment varies may suggest that the r- process yields are constant while the gas mass into which they are mixed varies. Given that all stars have similar [Fe/H] values then suggests that only one or few previous stellar generations provided the observed chemical abundances, meaning that perhaps only one r-process event occurred prior to their formation. This would be consistent with a (near) constant r-process yield per event. Obtaining detailed element abundances for stars with mild r-process element enhancements is necessary to better constrain the ubiquity of the r-process pattern, the yields of r-process elements, and the site of its production.

Stellar substructures in the solar neighbourhood

We determine detailed elemental abundances in stars belonging to the so-called Group 1 of the Geneva-Copenhagen survey (GCS) and compare the chemical composition with the Galactic thin- and thick-disc stars, with the GCS Group 2 and Group 3 stars, as well as with several kinematic streams of similar metallicities. The aim is to search for chemical signatures that might give information about the formation history of this kinematic group of stars. High-resolution spectra were obtained with the Fibre-fed Echelle Spectrograph (FIES) spectrograph at the Nordic Optical Telescope, La Palma, and were analysed with a differential model atmosphere method. Comparison stars were observed and analysed with the same method. The average value of [Fe/H] for the 37 stars of Group 1 is -0.20 +- 0.14 dex. Investigated Group 1 stars can be separated into three age subgroups. Along with the main 8- and 12-Gyr-old populations, a subgroup of stars younger than 5 Gyr can be separated as well. Abundances of oxygen, alpha-elements, and r-process dominated elements are higher than in Galactic thin-disc dwarfs. This elemental abundance pattern has similar characteristics to that of the Galactic thick disc and differs slightly from those in Hercules, Arcturus, and AF06 stellar streams. The similar chemical composition of stars in Group 1, as well as in Group 2 and 3, with that in stars of the thick disc might suggest that their formation histories are linked. The chemical composition pattern together with the kinematic properties and ages of stars in the investigated GCS groups provide evidence of their common origin and possible relation to an ancient merging event. A gas-rich satellite merger scenario is proposed as the most likely origin.

Early turbulent mixing as the origin of chemical homogeneity in open star clusters.

The abundances of elements in stars are critical clues to stars' origins. Observed star-to-star variations in logarithmic abundance within an open star cluster--a gravitationally bound ensemble of stars in the Galactic plane--are typically only about 0.01 to 0.05 over many elements, which is noticeably smaller than the variation of about 0.06 to 0.3 seen in the interstellar medium from which the stars form. It is unknown why star clusters are so homogenous, and whether homogeneity should also prevail in regions of lower star formation efficiency that do not produce bound clusters. Here we report simulations that trace the mixing of chemical elements as star-forming clouds assemble and collapse. We show that turbulent mixing during cloud assembly naturally produces a stellar abundance scatter at least five times smaller than that in the gas, which is sufficient to explain the observed chemical homogeneity of stars. Moreover, mixing occurs very early, so that regions with star formation efficiencies of about 10 per cent are nearly as well mixed as those with formation efficiencies of about 50 per cent. This implies that even regions that do not form bound clusters are likely to be well mixed, and improves the prospects of using 'chemical tagging' to reconstruct (via their unique chemical signatures, or tags) star clusters whose constituent stars have become unbound from one another and spread across the Galactic disk.

Astrobiological stoichiometry.

Chemical composition affects virtually all aspects of astrobiology, from stellar astrophysics to molecular biology. We present a synopsis of the research results presented at the "Stellar Stoichiometry" Workshop Without Walls hosted at Arizona State University April 11-12, 2013, under the auspices of the NASA Astrobiology Institute. The results focus on the measurement of chemical abundances and the effects of composition on processes from stellar to planetary scales. Of particular interest were the scientific connections between processes in these normally disparate fields. Measuring the abundances of elements in stars and giant and terrestrial planets poses substantial difficulties in technique and interpretation. One of the motivations for this conference was the fact that determinations of the abundance of a given element in a single star by different groups can differ by more than their quoted errors. The problems affecting the reliability of abundance estimations and their inherent limitations are discussed. When these problems are taken into consideration, self-consistent surveys of stellar abundances show that there is still substantial variation (factors of ∼ 2) in the ratios of common elements (e.g., C, O, Na, Al, Mg, Si, Ca) important in rock-forming minerals, atmospheres, and biology. We consider how abundance variations arise through injection of supernova nucleosynthesis products into star-forming material and through photoevaporation of protoplanetary disks. The effects of composition on stellar evolution are substantial, and coupled with planetary atmosphere models can result in predicted habitable zone extents that vary by many tens of percent. Variations in the bulk composition of planets can affect rates of radiogenic heating and substantially change the mineralogy of planetary interiors, affecting properties such as convection and energy transport.

Chemical abundances of stars with brown-dwarf companions

It is well-known that stars with giant planets are on average more metal-rich than stars without giant planets, whereas stars with detected low-mass planets do not need to be metal-rich. With the aim of studying the weak boundary that separates giant planets and brown dwarfs (BDs) and their formation mechanism, we analyze the spectra of a sample of stars with already confirmed BD companions both by radial velocity and astrometry. We employ standard and automatic tools to perform an EW-based analysis and to derive chemical abundances from CORALIE spectra of stars with BD companions. We compare these abundances with those of stars without detected planets and with low-mass and giant-mass planets. We find that stars with BDs do not have metallicities and chemical abundances similar to those of giant-planet hosts but they resemble the composition of stars with low-mass planets. The distribution of mean abundances of $\alpha$-elements and iron peak elements of stars with BDs exhibit a peak at about solar abundance whereas for stars with low-mass and high-mass planets the [X$_\alpha$/H] and [X$_{\rm Fe}$/H] peak abundances remain at $\sim -0.1$~dex and $\sim +0.15$~dex, respectively. We display these element abundances for stars with low-mass and high-mass planets, and BDs versus the minimum mass, $m_C \sin i$, of the most-massive substellar companion in each system, and we find a maximum in $\alpha$-element as well as Fe-peak abundances at $m_C \sin i \sim 1.35\pm 0.20$ jupiter masses. We discuss the implication of these results in the context of the formation scenario of BDs in comparison with that of giant planets.

Stellar substructures in the solar neighbourhood

From correlations between orbital parameters, several new coherent groups of stars were recently identified in the Galactic disc and suggested to correspond to remnants of disrupted satellites. To reconstruct their origin at least three main observational parameters - kinematics, chemical composition and age - must be known. We determine detailed elemental abundances in stars belonging to the so-called Group 2 of the Geneva-Copenhagen Survey and compare the chemical composition with Galactic thin- and thick-disc stars, as well as with the Arcturus and AF06 streams. The aim is to search for chemical signatures that might give information about the formation history of this kinematic group of stars. High-resolution spectra were obtained with the FIES spectrograph at the Nordic Optical Telescope, La Palma, and were analysed with a differential model atmosphere method. Comparison stars were observed and analysed with the same method. The average value of [Fe/H] for the 32 stars of Group 2 is -0.42 +- 0.10 dex. The investigated group consists mainly of two 8- and 12-Gyr-old stellar populations. Abundances of oxygen, alpha-elements, and r-process-dominated elements are higher than in Galactic thin-disc dwarfs. This elemental abundance pattern has similar characteristics as that of the Galactic thick-disc. The similarity in chemical composition of stars in Group 2 with that in stars of the thick-disc might suggest that their formation histories are linked. The chemical composition together with the kinematic properties and ages of stars in the investigated stars provides evidence of their common origin and possible relation to an ancient merging event. A gas-rich satellite merger scenario is proposed as the most likely origin. Groups 2 and 3 of the Geneva-Copenhagen Survey might have originated in the same merging event.

The case for high precision in elemental abundances of stars in the era of large spectroscopic surveys

A number of large spectroscopic surveys of stars in the Milky Way are under way or are being planned. In this context it is important to discuss the extent to which elemental abundances can be used as discriminators between different (known and unknown) stellar populations in the Milky Way. We aim to establish the requirements in terms of precision in elemental abundances, as derived from spectroscopic surveys of the Milky Way's stellar populations, in order to detect interesting substructures in elemental abundance space. We present a simple relation between the minimum number of stars needed to detect a given substructure and the precision of the measurements. The results are in agreement with recent small- and large-scale studies, with high and low precision, respectively. Large-number statistics cannot fully compensate for low precision in the abundance measurements and each survey should carefully evaluate what the main science drivers are for the survey and ensure that the chosen observational strategy will result in the precision necessary to answer the questions posed.

3D modeling of stellar atmospheres and the impact on the understanding of the reliability of elemental abundances in stars as tracers of galactic chemical evolution

AbstractWe present a critical review of the construction of 3D model atmospheres with emphasis on modeling challenges. We discuss the basic physical processes which give rise to the effects which set 3D models apart from 1D standard models. We consider elemental abundances derived from molecular features, and the determination of the microturbulence with 3D models. The examples serve as illustration of the limitations inherent to 1D, however, also to 3D modeling. We find that 3D models can provide constraints on the microturbulence parameter, and predict substantial corrections for abundances derived from molecular species.

CARBON AND OXYGEN ABUNDANCES IN THE HOT JUPITER EXOPLANET HOST STAR XO-2B AND ITS BINARY COMPANION

With the aim of connecting the compositions of stars and planets, we present the abundances of carbon and oxygen, as well as iron and nickel, for the transiting exoplanet host star XO-2N and its wide-separation binary companion XO-2S. Stellar parameters are derived from high-resolution, high-signal-to-noise spectra, and the two stars are found to be similar in their Teff, log g, iron ([Fe/H]), nickel ([Ni/H]) abundances. Their carbon ([C/H]) and oxygen ([O/H]) abundances also overlap within errors, although XO-2N may be slightly more C-rich and O-rich than XO-2S. The C/O ratios of both stars (~0.60+/-0.20) may also be somewhat larger than solar (C/O~0.50). The XO-2 system has a transiting hot Jupiter orbiting one binary component but not the other, allowing us to probe the potential effects planet formation might have on the host star composition. Additionally, with multiple observations of its atmosphere the transiting exoplanet XO-2b lends itself to compositional analysis, which can be compared to the natal chemical environment established by our binary star elemental abundances. This work sets the stage for determining how similar/different exoplanet and host star compositions are, and the implications for planet formation, by discussing the C/O ratio measurements in the unique environment of a visual binary system with one star hosting a transiting hot Jupiter.

Abundances of neutron-capture elements in stars of the Galactic disk substructures

The aim of this work is to present and discuss the observations of the iron peak (Fe, Ni) and neutron-capture element (Y, Zr, Ba, La, Ce, Nd, Sm, and Eu) abundances for 276 FGK dwarfs, located in the galactic disk with metallicity -1 < [Fe/H] < +0.3. Atmospheric parameters and chemical composition of the studied stars were determined from an high resolution, high signal-to-noise echelle spectra obtained with the echelle spectrograph ELODIE at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence (France). Effective temperatures were estimated by the line depth ratio method and from the H_{\alpha} line-wing fitting. Surface gravities (log g) were determined by parallaxes and the ionization balance of iron. Abundance determinations were carried out using the LTE approach, taking the hyperfine structure for Eu into account, and the abundance of Ba was computed under the NLTE approximation. We are able to assign most of the stars in our sample to the substructures of the Galaxy thick disk, thin disk, or Hercules stream according to their kinematics. The classification of 27 stars is uncertain. For most of the stars in the sample, the abundances of neutron-capture elements have not been measured earlier. For all of them, we provide the chemical composition and discuss the contribution from different nucleosynthesis processes.

The Chamaeleon II low-mass star-forming region: radial velocities, elemental abundances, and accretion properties

Radial velocities, elemental abundances, and accretion properties of members of star-forming regions (SFRs) are important for understanding star and planet formation. While infrared observations reveal the evolutionary status of the disk, optical spectroscopy is fundamental to acquire information on the properties of the central star and on the accretion characteristics. 2MASS archive data and the Spitzer c2d survey of the Chamaeleon II dark cloud have provided disk properties of a large number of young stars. We complement these data with spectroscopy with the aim of providing physical stellar parameters and accretion properties. We use FLAMES/UVES+GIRAFFE observations of 40 members of Cha II to measure radial velocities through cross-correlation technique, Li abundances by means of curves of growth, and for a suitable star elemental abundances of Fe, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, and Ni using the code MOOG. From the equivalent widths of the Halpha, Hbeta, and the HeI-5876, 6678, 7065 Angstrom emission lines, we estimate the mass accretion rates, dMacc/dt, for all the objects. We derive a radial velocity distribution for the Cha II stars (<Vrad>=11.4+-2.0 km/s). We find dMacc/dt prop. to Mstar^1.3 and to Age^(-0.82) in the 0.1-1.0 Msun mass regime, and a mean dMacc/dt for Cha II of ~7*10^(-10) Msun/yr. We also establish a relationship between the HeI-7065 Angstrom line emission and the accretion luminosity. The radial velocity distributions of stars and gas in Cha II are consistent. The spread in dMacc/dt at a given stellar mass is about one order of magnitude and can not be ascribed entirely to short timescale variability. Analyzing the relation between dMacc/dt and the colors in Spitzer and 2MASS bands, we find indications that the inner disk changes from optically thick to optically thin at dMacc/dt~10^(-10) Msun/yr. Finally, the disk fraction is consistent with the age of Cha II.

LOW Mg/Si PLANETARY HOST STARS AND THEIR Mg-DEPLETED TERRESTRIAL PLANETS

Simulations have shown that a diverse range of extrasolar terrestrial planet bulk compositions are likely to exist, based on the observed variations in host star elemental abundances. Based on recent studies, it is expected that a significant proportion of host stars may have Mg/Si ratios below 1. Here we examine this previously neglected group of systems. Planets simulated as forming within these systems are found to be Mg-depleted (compared to the Earth), consisting of silicate species such as pyroxene and various feldspars. Planetary carbon abundances also vary in accordance with the host stars C/O ratio. The predicted abundances are in keeping with observations of polluted white dwarfs, lending validity to this approach. Further studies are required to determine the full planetary impacts of the bulk compositions predicted here.
