Relativistic calculations of energy levels, lifetimes, transition parameters, and electron impact excitation cross sections for Kr XIX

In this study, we present a detailed analysis of atomic properties for Kr XIX, specifically focusing on the lowest 128 fine-structure levels originating from the 3s23p6, 3s23p53d, 3s3p63d and 3s23p43d2 configurations. We report energy levels, lifetimes, wavelengths, weighted oscillator strengths, and transition probabilities for multipole transition types (E1, E2, M1, and M2). To achieve this, we employed the GRASP2018 code, which implements the fully relativistic multiconfigurational Dirac–Hartree–Fock method and accounts for Breit interaction and quantum electrodynamic effects. We performed another set of calculations using the many-body perturbation theory implemented in the flexible atomic code (FAC). By comparing the results obtained from GRASP2018 and FAC, we established the accuracy and consistency of our calculations. Furthermore, using the relativistic distorted wave theory, we studied electron impact excitation of all transitions to upper levels from the ground and metastable levels and reported excitation cross sections for incident electron energies up to 5 keV. To enhance the practical utility of our findings, we also provided analytical fittings of these cross sections and excitation rate coefficients for their applications in plasma modeling. This work contributes to the atomic properties and excitation cross sections of Kr XIX, addressing a marked gap in the available atomic data.

Benchmarking calculations of level energies, transition parameters and electron impact excitation cross sections of S-like Xe38+

Atomic structure parameters for levels corresponding to 2s22p63s23p4, 2s22p63s3p5, 2s22p63s23p23d2, 2s22p63s3p43d and 2s22p63s23p33d configurations of S-like Xe38+ are calculated using the fully relativistic multiconfiguration Dirac-Hatree-Fock (MCDHF) method followed by the subsequent relativistic configuration interaction (RCI) calculations. The parameters evaluated include energies of the lowest 75 levels and E1, M1, E2, and M2 transition parameters among these levels. The effect of the choice of virtual orbitals for generating the wavefunctions is discussed. The accuracy of our line strengths is established through the rigorous calculations of their associated uncertainties using three different methods. Another set of calculations using the many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) to validate the present MCDHF-RCI energies is carried out. Further, the electron impact excitation cross-sections using the relativistic distorted wave (RDW) theory are determined for all transitions from the ground and metastable states in the incident electron energy range from the excitation threshold to 10 keV. For plasma physics applications, the fitting parameters for these cross sections employing two distinct equations tailored for low and high-energy regimes are reported. Moreover, the rate coefficients are determined in the electron temperatures range of 15 eV to 100 eV by taking into account the Maxwellian electron energy distribution function and our computed cross-sections. In addition to addressing the atomic data gap in highly charged Xe ions, the present results are of good accuracy and can serve as benchmark tests for other theoretical evaluations. Moreover, they can also assist in line identification of the complex spectra of highly charged sulphur-like xenon ions.

Fine structure resolved excitation cross sections of singly ionized Ga for the modeling and diagnostics of Ga plasmas

Calculation of electron impact excitation cross sections for singly charged Ga ions plays a crucial role in plasma modeling, facilitating the comprehension of plasma behavior, characteristics, and dynamics in diverse domains, such as astrophysics, fusion research, the semiconductor industry, etc. In the available literature, there is a notable scarcity of, or even a complete absence of, these cross sections. Hence, in the present work, electron impact excitation cross sections are calculated for the transitions from the fine structure resolved energy levels of the configurations 4s2 and 4s4p to the fine structure resolved energy levels of the configurations 4s4p , 4s5s , 4p2 and 4s4d of the singly charged Ga ion (Ga+) using the relativistic distorted wave approximation theory with the target states represented by multi configurational Dirac Fock wavefunctions. The cross sections are calculated for projectile electron energy varying from threshold to 500 eV. Furthermore, the electron impact excitation rate coefficients for all the transitions under investigation are also calculated for electron temperatures ranging from 0.5 to 5 eV. In addition, analytic fitting of the rate coefficients is also performed, providing a practical resource for directly utilizing in plasma modeling applications.

Fully relativistic distorted wave calculations of electron impact excitation of gallium atom: Cross sections relevant for plasma kinetic modeling

Electron impact excitation cross sections of neutral Ga are calculated using the relativistic distorted wave approximation with the aid of multiconfigurational Dirac-Fock wavefunctions. The cross sections are calculated from the fine structure resolved levels of the 4s24p manifold, i.e., from the ground 2P1/2 and the first excited state 2P3/2, to the fine structure resolved levels of the manifolds 4s24pdf, 4s4p2(4P1/2,4P3/2, and 4P5/2), 4s25spdf, 4s26spdf, 4s27spdf, and 4s28spdf for incident electron energies ranging from threshold to 500 eV. Where available, a comparison of the calculated oscillator strengths, transition probabilities, and cross sections with the previously reported results has been performed. The cross sections for the excitation from 4s24p2P1/2 to 4s24f, 4s4p2(4P1/2,4P3/2, and 4P5/2), 4s25f, 4s26f, 4s27df, and 4s28spdf and all the excitation cross sections from 4s24p2P3/2 are calculated and reported for the first time for a wide range of electron energies. Furthermore, the rate coefficients are also calculated using the present cross sections for an electron temperature varying from 0.5 to 5 eV. An analytic fitting of the calculated rate coefficients is provided to facilitate their inclusion in various plasma kinetic models.

Recommended electron-impact excitation and ionization cross sections for Be II

An overview of the current status of electron-impact excitation and ionization cross sections for Be II is given and the recommended data sets for use in plasma modeling are presented. Accurate cross sections between the lowest 14 atomic terms of 1s2nl(n≤5) configurations are calculated with the convergent close-coupling (CCC) method and compared with the available experimental and theoretical results. The recommended electron-impact excitation and ionization cross sections are represented by analytical fitting functions that preserve correct asymptotic behavior. Uncertainties in the recommended data sets are determined by assessing the accuracy of the target structures, the convergence in the subsequent collisional calculations, and the fitting method. They are well within 15 % for most of the transitions. The fitting coefficients for 91 excitation cross sections and 14 ionization cross sections are provided for use in plasma modeling simulations.

Fast computation approach of electron-impact ionization and excitation cross-sections for atoms and ions with medium- and high-<i>Z</i> elements

The atomic data of medium- and high-<i>Z</i> elements, such as electron-impact ionization and excitation cross-sections, possess extensive applications in fields such as fusion science and X-ray interactions with matter. There are atoms and ions in high energy density plasma, with different charge states and energy states ranging from ground states to highly excited states, and the cross-sections of each charge state and energy state need to be calculated. The bottlenecks limiting computational performance are the inevitable relativistic effects of medium- and high-<i>Z</i> elements and the extremely complex electronic configurations. Taking tantalum (Ta) for example, by using the relativistic Dirac-Fock theory and distorted wave model, we compute the electron-impact ionization and excitation cross-sections of Ta from the ground state atom up to Ta<sup>72+</sup> with the incident electron energy range of 1–150 keV. The detailed configuration accounting (DCA) reaction channel cross-sections are derived by summing and weighting the original detailed level accounting (DLA) cross-sections. After examining the data, two regularities are found. In terms of DLA, the pre-averaging DCA cross-sections have varying initial DLA energy levels but are typically close to each other. There is not a straightforward function that can explain the discrepancies between them. In terms of DCA, inner subshells typically contribute very little to the total cross-section as their ionization and excitation cross-sections are orders of magnitude smaller than those of outer subshells. We provide two techniques to reduce the computational costs based on the regularities. To minimize the total number of DLA reaction channels used in the computation, the initial DLA energy levels can be randomly sampled. Through a Monte Carlo numerical experiment, we determine the appropriate number of sampling points that can reduce the total number of DLA channels by an order of magnitude while maintaining a 5% error margin. In terms of impact ionization, since small cross-section DCA channels are insignificant, only a tiny portion of the DCA channels are required to preserve a 95% accuracy of the entire cross-section. It is possible to use the analytical Binary Encounter Bethe (BEB) formula to determine which DCA channels should be neglected before the computation to reduce computational costs. In terms of electron-impact excitation, just the cross-sections of the same excited subshells as the preserved ionized subshells, which are determined in the previous electron-impact ionization (EII) calculations, are needed. Finally, we compare our EII results with theoretical and experimental results. In the low incident electron energy range of below 2 keV, our results accord with the theoretical result of the 6s EII cross-section of the Ta atom and the experimental result of the total EII cross-section of the Ta<sup>1+</sup> ion. In the high energy range of below 150 keV, our results are also consistent with the theoretical result of the 1s EII cross-section of the Ta atom and the experimental result of the 1s EII cross-section of the Cu atom. Our results reasonably match the previous experimental and theoretical results in low-energy range and high-energy range, inner subshell and outer subshell, indicating the accuracy of our calculation. The proposed optimizing strategy can be applied to various medium- to high-<i>Z</i> elements and is compatible to most computation codes.

A Study of the Atomic Processes of Highly Charged Ions Embedded in Dense Plasma

The study of atomic spectroscopy and collision processes in a dense plasma environment has gained a considerable interest in the past few years due to its several applications in various branches of physics. The multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock (MCDF) method and relativistic configuration interaction (RCI) technique incorporating the uniform electron gas model (UEGM) and analytical plasma screening (APS) potentials have been employed for characterizing the interactions among the charged particles in plasma. The bound and continuum state wavefunctions are determined using the aforementioned potentials within a relativistic Dirac-Coulomb atomic structure framework. The present approach is applied for the calculation of electronic structures, radiative properties, electron impact excitation cross sections and photoionization cross sections of many electron systems confined in a plasma environment. The present study not only extends our knowledge of the plasma-screening effect but also opens the door for the modelling and diagnostics of astrophysical and laboratory plasmas.

Self-Consistent State-to-State Kinetic Modeling of CO2 Cold Plasmas: Insights on the Role of Electronically Excited States

AbstractThis study focuses on the role of CO2 and CO electronically excited states in the kinetics of CO2 cold non-equilibrium plasma discharges by means of a state-to-state OD kinetic model based on the simultaneous and self-consistent solution of the electron Boltzmann equation and the master equations describing the vibrationally and electronically excited state kinetics and the plasma composition. A new CO2 dissociation model based on the use of the Biagi electron impact excitation cross sections, considered as fully dissociative, of several CO2 electronic excited states, in the energy range from 6.5 to 25 eV, is tested and compared with the results obtained by using the Phelps database in typical glow and microwave discharge conditions. Moreover, a refinement of the kinetics of the $$\mathrm{CO}\left({\mathrm{a}}^{3}\Pi \right)$$ CO a 3 Π excited state is proposed by including new production and loss terms and the effect of the change of its time evolution density on the eedf, the electron temperature, the CO2 and CO vibrational distribution functions, electron impact and vibrational induced dissociation rates is investigated. Finally, the contribution of the $$\mathrm{CO}\left({\mathrm{a}}^{3}\Pi \right)$$ CO a 3 Π state to CO2 dissociation is examined in terms of production and recombination (or back-reaction) processes both in microwave and glow discharge conditions.

Study of Electron Impact Excitation of Na-like Kr Ion for Impurity Seeding Experiment in Large Helical Device

In this work, a krypton gas impurity seeding experiment was conducted in a Large Helical Device. Emission lines from the Na-like Kr ion in the extreme ultraviolet wavelength region, such as 22.00 nm, 17.89 nm, 16.51 nm, 15.99 nm, and 14.08 nm, respective to 2p63p(2P1/2o)−2p63s(2S1/2), 2p63p(2P3/2o)−2p63s(2S1/2), 2p63d(2D3/2)−2p63p(2P3/2o), 2p63d(2D5/2)−2p63p(2P3/2o), and 2p63d(2D3/2)−2p63p(2P1/2o) transitions, are observed. In order to generate a theoretical synthetic spectrum, an extensive calculation concerning the excitation of the Kr25+ ion through electron impact was performed for the development of a suitable plasma model. For this, the relativistic multiconfiguration Dirac–Hartree–Fock method was employed along with its extension to the relativistic configuration interaction method to compute the relativistic bound-state wave functions and excitation energies of the fine structure levels using the General Relativistic Atomic Structure Package-2018. In addition, another set of calculations was carried out utilizing the relativistic many-body perturbation theory and relativistic configuration interaction methods integrated within the Flexible Atomic Code. To investigate the reliability of our findings, the results of excitation energies, transition probabilities, and weighted oscillator strengths of different dipole-allowed transitions obtained from these different methods are presented and compared with the available data. Further, the detailed electron impact excitation cross-sections and their respective rate coefficients are obtained for various fine structure resolved transitions using the fully relativistic distorted wave method. Rate coefficients, calculated using the Flexible Atomic Code for population and de-population kinetic processes, are integrated into the collisional-radiative plasma model to generate a theoretical spectrum. Further, the emission lines observed from the Kr25+ ion in the impurity seeding experiment were compared with the present plasma model spectrum, demonstrating a noteworthy overall agreement between the measurement and the theoretical synthetic spectrum.

Electron-impact Excitation of Pt i–iii: The Importance of Metastables and Collision Processes in Neutron Star Merger and Laboratory Plasmas

The detection of a gravitational-wave signal and subsequent electromagnetic transient from a neutron star merger in 2017 is consistent with expectations of neutron star mergers as an r-process element production site. Within the first few days post-merger, the kilonova spectra are consistent with a blackbody illuminating a mix of heavy, r-process elements. With increasing time, the kilonova transitions to the non-LTE regime where the level populations and ionization balance are determined by both collisional and photoprocesses. Detailed cross section data for electron-impact processes involving the relevant species are often not available. In such circumstances, it is reasonable to use approximate methods as baseline data for use in spectral modeling, and it is useful to evaluate the accuracy of such methods against more sophisticated collision calculations when possible. We describe new calculations of the electron-impact excitation cross sections of Pt i–iIi using the DARC R-matrix codes. Using collisional-radiative models, we show that, at plasma conditions expected in kilonovae, the expressions of van Regemorter and Axelrod are insufficient for producing electron-impact excitation data for complex, heavy species such as the low charge states of Pt. Through comparisons with data generated with the relativistic distorted wave approach, as implemented in the Flexible Atomic Code, we show the distorted wave method produces cross section data that, when incorporated into spectral models, predicts strong spectral feature distributions similar in intensity to those from models built on data computed with the R-matrix approach for the considered ions and plasma conditions.

An effective method to calculate the electron impact excitation cross sections of helium from ground state to a final channel in the whole energy region

The electron impact excitation (EIE) cross sections of an atom/ion in the whole energy region are needed in many research fields, such as astrophysics studies, inertial confinement fusion researches and so on. In the present work, an effective method to calculate the EIE cross sections of an atom/ion in the whole energy region is presented. We use the EIE cross sections of helium as an illustration example. The optical forbidden 1 1S–n 1S (n = 2–4) and optical allowed 1 1S–n 1P (n = 2–4) excitation cross sections are calculated in the whole energy region using the scheme that combines the partial wave R-matrix method and the first Born approximation. The calculated cross sections are in good agreement with the available experimental measurements. Based on these accurate cross sections of our calculation, we find that the ratios between the accurate cross sections and Born cross sections are nearly the same for different excitation final states in the same channel. According to this interesting property, a universal correction function is proposed and given to calculate the accurate EIE cross sections with the same computational efforts of the widely used Born cross sections, which should be very useful in the related application fields. Electron impact fine-structure cross-section calculations of Cu and their applications in the diagnostics of laser-produced Cu-plasma through the collisional radiative model

We present the calculations of electron impact excitation cross-sections for the transitions from the ground state of Cu 3d104sS1/22 to the excited fine structure energy levels of the configurations 3d94s2,3d94s4p,3d104l,(l=p,d,f),3d105l,(l=s,p,d),3d10nl,(n=6,7;l=s,p) using the fully relativistic distorted wave theory. In addition, cross-sections for the transitions from the metastable states 3d94s2D5/2,3/22 to the upper excited levels are also presented. For calculating these cross-sections, we have obtained the atomic wave functions of copper using the multi-configuration Dirac–Fock approximation theory. To ensure the accuracy of these wave functions, we compared our calculated oscillator strengths of some dipole-allowed transitions of Cu with the available earlier reported values. We have utilized all the calculated electron impact fine-structure level excitation cross-sections from the ground as well as the metastable states of Cu to develop a fine structure-resolved collisional-radiative (CR) model for the diagnostics of laser-produced Cu plasma at atmospheric pressure. The model has been applied for diagnostics by coupling it with the spatially resolved optical emission spectroscopy (OES) measurements of Singh and Sharma [Phys. Plasmas 23 122104 (2016)] in the presence and absence of a static magnetic field. For diagnostics, the intensities of three OES observed strong atomic emission lines of Cu viz, 510.5, 515.3, and 521.8 nm have been utilized in the absence and presence of a magnetic field at different axial lengths (z = 0.5–6.5 mm) from the Cu target. Also, these intensities are corrected using the internal reference self-absorption method to overcome the effect of radiation trapping. The normalized intensities of the considered lines obtained from the CR model have been compared with their corresponding OES-measured values to extract the plasma parameters, i.e., electron temperature and electron density. Further, the obtained electron temperatures from the CR model are compared with the corresponding values reported in the experimental paper of Singh and Sharma [Phys. Plasmas 23 122104 (2016)] obtained using the Boltzmann plot method.

Relativistic calculation of electron impact excitation of tin: cross sections of importance in plasma modeling

The present work includes the calculation of electron impact excitation cross sections for the fine structure resolved transitions in Sn I and Sn II, using the relativistic distorted wave approximation with the aid of Dirac-Fock multiconfigurational wavefunctions. For Sn I, the cross sections are calculated for the excitations from the fine structure resolved energy levels of the manifolds, , , , and including the ground state, to the fine structure resolved levels of , , , , and manifolds for a wide range of projectile electron energy from 0 to 500 eV. Further, the cross sections are also calculated for the excitations of Sn II from the fine structure resolved energy levels of the manifolds, , , , and including the ground state, to the fine structure resolved levels of , , , , and manifolds. All the cross sections for Sn I except for the excitation from the ground state to the fine-structure resolved excited states of , and manifolds and all the cross sections for Sn II are reported for the first time. In order to ensure the consistency of the present calculations, a comparison of the oscillator strengths and transition probabilities is carried out with the available calculations and measurements. The present cross sections are also compared with previous calculations and observed to be in reasonable agreement. The calculated cross sections are of great interest in the modeling and diagnostic of various plasmas such as laser induced plasma, fusion plasma, etc. Further, to ease the use of calculated cross sections, the analytic fitting of the cross sections is also provided.

The density and pressure of helium nano-bubbles encapsulated in silicon

The 1 s 2 → 1 s 2 p ( 1 P ) excitation in compressed helium atoms in either the bulk material or encapsulated in a bubble is shifted to energies higher than in the free atom. For bulk helium, energy shifts predicted from non-empirical electronic structure computations are in excellent agreement with experimentally determined values. However, there are significant discrepancies both between the results of experiments on different bubbles and between these and the well established descriptions of the bulk. A critique is presented of previous analyses of earlier scanning transmission electron microscope measurements that are untrustworthy because the density dependence of the electron impact excitation cross section was neglected. Experimental electron energy loss data from an earlier study of helium encapsulated in silicon are reanalysed and it is shown that the properties of the helium in these bubbles do not differ significantly from those in the bulk, thereby enabling the densities in the bubbles to be determined. These enable bubble pressures to be deduced from a well established experimentally derived equation of state. It is shown that the errors of up to 80% in the incorrectly determined densities are greatly magnified in the predicted pressures which can be too large by factors of over seven.

Plasma-relevant fast electron impact study of difluoromethane

Difluoromethane () is a commonly used etching gas in manufacturing very-large-scale integrated circuits as the fluorine source. Electron impact excitation cross sections for are important input data for modeling the reactive etching plasmas. In this work, we present the experimental generalized oscillator strengths for the , , and transitions on the absolute scale. The measurement was realized by employing the crossed-beam based relative flow technique at an angle-resolved electron energy loss spectrometer, operating at an incident energy of 1500 eV and a resolution of 80 meV. The dipole-forbidden transition at around 9.7 eV is identified for the first time. The measured data are fitted with the well-known Lassettre formula to yield analytical expressions and optical oscillator strengths at for dipole-allowed transitions. The analytical expressions enable integrations over momentum transfer to obtain the Born integral cross sections for electron impact excitations from the threshold to 5000 eV. The integral cross sections for dipole-allowed transitions are scaled to a more reliable level by using the BE-scaling method. The experimental data can benchmark theoretical calculations and supplement the molecular database for plasma modelers.

Electron impact cross-sections and rate coefficients of Si+2 ions relevant to collisional radiative modeling of silicon plasma

We report on the fine structure resolved electron impact excitation (EIE) cross-sections of Si+2 from its ground state 3s 2 (J= 0) to the 41 excited fine structure levels of the configurations 3s3p, 3p 2, 3s3d, 3s4s, 3s4p, 3s5s, 3s4d, 3s4f, 3s5p, 3s5d and 3s5f using relativistic distorted wave theory. The excitation cross-sections from the excited metastable levels (3P0,3P2) of the configuration 3s3p to higher excited levels as well as for some other dominant transitions relevant to plasma modeling are also obtained. In addition, the ionization cross-sections are evaluated from the ground and metastable levels to higher ionized state Si+3 (2S1/2). The calculated cross-sections are utilized to obtain the rate coefficients corresponding to EIE and ionization processes affecting the intensity of prominent Si+2 emission lines 379.61, 380.65, 456.78, and 457.48 nm recorded through optical emission spectroscopic measurements by Wang et al (2020 Phys. Plasmas 27 063513) on laser produced silicon plasma. Further, the rate coefficients corresponding to radiative, and three body recombination are also presented. The reported cross-sections and rate coefficients will be useful for developing rigorous collisional radiative model for the diagnostics of silicon plasma.

Diagnostics of Argon Plasma Using Reliable Electron-Impact Excitation Cross Sections of Ar and Ar+

Comprehensive collisional radiative (CR) models have been developed for the diagnostic of argon plasma using Ar and Ar+ emission lines. The present CR models consist of 42 and 114 fine-structure levels of Ar and Ar+, respectively. Various populating and depopulating mechanisms are incorporated in the model. A complete set of electron-impact fine-structure resolved excitation cross-sections for different excited levels in Ar and Ar+ are used, which are obtained by employing relativistic distorted wave theory. Along with this, the electron-impact ionization, radiation trapping, diffusion, and three-body recombination are also considered. Further, to demonstrate the applicability of the present CR model, we applied it to characterize the Helicon-plasma utilizing the optical emission spectroscopy measurements. The key plasma parameters, such as electron density and electron temperature, are obtained using their measured Ar and Ar+ emission line intensities. Our results are in reasonable agreement with their anticipated estimates. The matching of our calculated intensities of the different Ar and Ar+ lines shows excellent agreement with the measured intensities at various powers.

Electron impact excitation cross section calculations of the fine structure transitions of Mo and their applications in the diagnostics of the laser induced Mo plasma

The current work reports a detailed calculation of electron impact excitation cross sections for the fine structure transitions of Mo from the manifolds 4d 55s, 4d 45s 2, 4d 6 and 4d 55p to the manifolds 4d 55s, 4d 45s 2, 4d 6, 4d 55p, 4d 45s5p, 4d 55d, 4d 56s, 4d 45s6s, and 4d 57s, using the relativistic distorted wave approximation for the applications in plasma modelling. Multi-configurational Dirac–Fock wave functions are used in the calculations. The oscillator strength and cross section results are compared with the previous calculations and measurements. A comprehensive collisional radiative (CR) model is developed and used to characterize laser induced molybdenum plasma to ensure that the calculated cross sections can be used for various plasma modelling applications. The current CR model has taken into account the electron impact excitation and de-excitation processes using the calculated consistent cross sections. The electron induced processes are dominant kinetic processes in the laser induced plasma. Furthermore, the diagnostics of the laser induced Mo plasma is done by coupling the current CR model with the experimental laser induced breakdown spectroscopic measurements of Mal et al (2021 Appl. Phys. B 127 52). The plasma parameter, i.e., electron temperature has been calculated using nine measured intensities of the emission lines of Mo, with wavelengths 406.9, 423.3, 438.2, 453.7, 476.0, 550.7, 553.3, 557.0 and 592.9 nm. The results are also compared with the values reported in the Boltzmann plot at various delay times ranging from 0.5 to 5.0 μs.

Insights from Collisional-Radiative Models of Neutral and Singly Ionized Xenon in Hall Thrusters

Collisional-radiative (CR) models for neutral and singly ionized xenon have been constructed for applications to Hall thruster diagnostics. The models use primarily theoretical electron-impact excitation cross sections calculated using the Dirac B-spline R-matrix method. This paper describes the models’ construction and their validation against heritage CR models and previously published Hall thruster data, and then outlines several applications. The baseline 0D steady-state models are used to investigate electron density dependence in neutral xenon emission line intensity ratios commonly used to measure electron temperature, and also to demonstrate that stepwise ionization through excited states is an important process in Hall thrusters. The models are extended to evaluate impacts of neutral and ion transport on 0D CR model applicability, intrinsic bandwidth limits for time-dependent line intensity measurements, and errors introduced when the plasma is assumed to be optically thin.
