IoT Based Design and Implementation of Intelligent Energy Distribution Management with Photovoltaic System

Abstract: The grid operators have difficulties as a result of the increasing penetration of renewable sources due to reduced environmental contamination. Unrestrained energy use will undoubtedly deepen environmental harm and accelerate global warming. A best practice for effectively managing energy use is energy management. IoT technology can be leveraged by technological advancements to facilitate energy management. This paper offers a novel way to energy management using a solar system and the Internet of Things (IoT). The suggested system tracks, evaluates, and optimizes solar power use in real time with the goal of increasing energy distribution's intelligence and efficiency. The project's goal is to build a net energy meter (NEM), a unique billing system that gives solar PV system owners credit for the entire retail value of the electricity their system produces. Under NEM, a customer's electric meter tracks how much energy they use as well as how much extra energy the system produces and feeds back into the electric utility grid.

Electrical energy requirements have increased in line with economic growth and social welfare. Every month, meter recording officers come to record customers' electricity kwh usage. Problems often occur in the recording process using the ACMT application such as errors in inputting the booth meter numbers or the customer's kwh meter as recorded by the officer. The main problem of this research is how to design a system for recording and calculating postpaid electricity kwh meter bills to produce a report that is fast, accurate, and optimal. This research aims to design a postpaid electricity meter recording system that will provide bill estimates for the customers, and reduce complaints and spikes in customer bills due to recording errors. The design created was tested using the White Box and Black Box Testing method as the results worked according to its function defined.

A Graph-Based Neural Approach to Linear Sum Assignment Problems.

Linear assignment problems are well-known combinatorial optimization problems involving domains such as logistics, robotics and telecommunications. In general, obtaining an optimal solution to such problems is computationally infeasible even in small settings, so heuristic algorithms are often used to find near-optimal solutions. In order to attain the right assignment permutation, this study investigates a general-purpose learning strategy that uses a bipartite graph to describe the problem structure and a message passing Graph Neural Network (GNN) model to learn the correct mapping. Comparing the proposed structure with two existing DNN solutions, simulation results show that the proposed approach significantly improves classification accuracy, proving to be very efficient in terms of processing time and memory requirements, due to its inherent parameter sharing capability. Among the many practical uses that require solving allocation problems in everyday scenarios, we decided to apply the proposed approach to address the scheduling of electric smart meters access within an electricity distribution smart grid infrastructure, since near-real-time energy monitoring is a key element of the green transition that has become increasingly important in recent times. The results obtained show that the proposed graph-based solver, although sub-optimal, exhibits the highest scalability, compared with other state-of-the-art heuristic approaches. Investigation and Root Cause Analysis of Transformer Metering Destruction by Arc Flash

An arc flash and fire in the secondary compartment of an industrial facility utility transformer resulted in destruction of newly installed electrical metering equipment. Inherent to this type of event are two loss-of-evidence challenges: extremely high heat burns or melts everything nearby, and urgency to restore normal operation may prevent comprehensive examination of the scene. The facility contractor’s operations staff conducted an initial root cause analysis. The contractor’s management called on an external forensic team to provide an independent assessment. Having an established investigation methodology allows the forensic examiner to better understand what was, and was not, evaluated by facility staff and prevents confirmation biases. This paper examines the facility’s report, addresses shortcomings in its conclusions, and goes on to detail the methods and reasoning behind the forensic team’s findings. The methodology presented in this paper is applicable to a wide range of industrial electrical fires.

Analysing renewable energy flow distribution and its influence on grid electricity prices

The paper presents an approach to the assessment of technical and economic efficiency for an electric energy (EE) transport in a distribution grid. It is focused on the extent of renewable energy sources (RES) integration efficiency according to energy prices in a grid. A two-step procedure for calculation is used in terms of the approach. The first one includes the obtaining of energy flows distribution in a grid. The next step provides the calculation of costs flows and nodal prices for electric energy. Both stages are performed using a developed branch flow model. Unlike power flow distribution describing the instant point of time, energy flow distribution developed for any operation duration deals with the integral values of the flows. This is of great importance for the deeply varying output profiles of the intermittent renewables. The model provides the direct utilization of electric energy meters data available in a grid. The approach presented is essential for locating the particular consumers of the renewable energy in terms of a grid’s deep state and circuit diversity as well as for analyzing the influence of a renewable energy for electricity prices, and estimating the necessary renewables’ levelised cost of energy (LCOE).

Measurement of Energy and Power Quality in the Spanish Des-regulated Market

The spanish electrical sector is, since 1997, becoming opened to a free deregulated market, in a progressive way, step by step, finishing the process the next 2007. One of the keys of this deregulation has been the reform of the Spanish regulation for the electrical metering points, necessary for adapt the energy meter fleet to the new needs of the market. This changes in the regulation have arrived later than the transition date for the different steps. Despite this, the different steps have been accelerated, and, since 1st of January of 2003, any electrical consumer can compete for being in the deregulated market. In this article it is tried to give a practical point of view and summarize, the different types of energy meters, depending of the level of consumer.

Prospects for the introduction and application of an automated information-measurement system for commercial electricity metering in Uzbekistan

In order to eliminate the problems arising in the processes of production, transmission and distribution of electricity during the transition to a market economy to date, scientific research has been conducted on the prospects for the introduction and application of an automated information-measurement system for commercial electricity metering in Uzbekistan. In this new system, the processes of obtaining data from modern electric meters, collecting and storing them, and then transferring the collected data to the information processing centers through communication channels (PLC, GSM, Radio channel) were analyzed. The main features, rules, hierarchy and the classical scheme of the system are presented in this automated information-measurement system.

Degradation Analysis: Modeling and Evaluating for Electric Energy Meters under Multi-stress

The measurement accuracy of electric energy meters (EEMs) is crucial for respecting the fairness of the electricity market and the justice of electric energy settlement. However, the basic error (BE) of the measurement suffers from external stress, especially under extreme environments. It is challenging to evaluate the degradation trend of EEMs under multi-stress. To address this issue, this paper proposes modeling and evaluating methods for precise degradation analysis of EEMs under multi-stress. First, an optimized k-nearest neighbor (OKNN) is proposed to correct the outliers, where the stress-related weight and weighting factor are designed. Then, a varied-bias wiener process with hierarchical Bayesian (VWHB) model is introduced to evaluate and explore the impact of stress on the BE. The multi-stress, as well as the BE, are fused to parameterize this impact. Integrating the OKNN and VWHB, a degradation analysis framework is further proposed to model the data and conduct the degradation analysis. Extensive experiments on field data collected from the typical operating environment lab demonstrated that the proposed degradation analysis framework reveals superior performance than some state-of-art approaches. The root of the mean of the square of errors and the mean of absolute value of errors of OKNN-VWHB are the lowest with 0.0356 and 0.0281, respectively, for all the EEMs from three different companies.

The Sub-Metered HVAC Implemented for Demand Response Dataset

Abstract Closed-loop control of commercial building heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) for demand response requires measurements used as feedback to the controllers. Demand response effectiveness is usually measured as a power deviation from baseline, but the building automation system (BAS) does not usually collect power measurements, and whole-building electric meters typically measure power at intervals of 15 min, which may be too slow for some types of demand response. Demand response strategies are sometimes focused on components of building HVAC systems, e.g., the response of supply/return fans to temperature set-point changes, but these components are usually not submetered. Fan power can be estimated from physics-based models leveraging BAS data, e.g., airflow measurements; but our ability to effectively close the loop on these estimates is not clear. In this paper, we introduce a massive dataset that contains both submetered fan power data and BAS data for several building HVAC systems during typical operation and demand response events. Through a case study we show that models leveraging BAS data alone do not provide accurate estimates of fan power during event transients, making it unlikely that closed-loop control of commercial building HVAC components for demand response would be effective using BAS data alone. This demonstrates the value of submetering HVAC components. More broadly, our dataset will enable future research bridging the gap between building control and power systems research.

Automated experimental complex on the platform of modern ASCME

Currently, in order to automate and digitalize processes in electrical distribution networks (DEN), ASCME software and hardware systems are widely used, which are mainly designed to solve problems of commercial electricity metering. At the same time, these automated systems do not solve such urgent problems as optimizing the operating modes of distribution networks, operational monitoring of technical and commercial losses of electricity, as well as diagnosing network conditions, including localizing the coordinates of unauthorized withdrawals of electricity (UWE). To date, the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic and a number of foreign scientific centers have developed the scientific foundations and technologies for solving the above problems in real time. In order to test and study the effectiveness of these new results, it is advisable to create an automated experimental complex (AEC), which is essentially a physical model of ASCME. This is due to the fact that the use of automated information systems currently used in distribution networks for this purpose is practically impossible. This article discusses the general structure, functional tasks and main directions of research using AEC. The complex includes a physical model of the distribution network and the main functional elements of modern automated control and accounting systems for electricity (ASCAE), such as a data concentrator, a computer server, single-phase and three-phase electricity meters and a telecommunications module for transmitting and receiving data. The basis of the special software of the experimental complex is made up of new methods and technologies for solving the above functional problems, which are not included in modern AMR systems. AEC is planned to be used not only for conducting scientific research and experiments, but also for the educational process in technical universities with areas of training in the electrical power industry.

A new concept of constructing an electric field strength meter is considered. The concept lies in the fact that along with the measurement of the modulus of the electric field strength vector, the error of the measurement result and the distance to the field source are subject to simultaneous instrumental determination. The field meter is based on a new dual sensor and a method for measuring the electric field strength. The ability of the measurement method to determine the error and the distance to the field source is provided by a dual electroinduction spherical sensor. A feature of a dual sensor is the ability to simultaneously output two field strength values measured at one point, obtained with errors of different signs. This feature made it possible to obtain the measurement result as an average value and two measured values, and thereby reduce the measurement error. The presence of two simultaneously measured values of the field strength also made it possible to obtain an empirical formula for determining the relative distance to the source at each measurement point. The obtained values of the relative distances made it possible to determine the error of the measurement result and the distance from the center of the sensor to the field source using known formulas. The possibility of a field meter to simultaneously instrumentally determine the error of the measurement result and the distance to the field source is considered for the first time.

Soil moisture forecasting for precision irrigation management using real-time electricity consumption records

The installation of the smart electricity meters (SEMs) to the high-density pumping wells in the North China Plain (NCP) provided a method to control the groundwater withdraw. The record in real-time electricity consumption from SEMs also provided an alternative method to forecast soil moisture to make irrigation decisions to improve irrigation efficiency. The irrigation timing and the irrigation amount could be obtained on-line from the SEMs based on the coefficients obtained for electricity-to-water conversion (E-Wc). The real-time recordings in the irrigation timing and amounts were further used to forecast the next irrigation timing and amount based on the water rights per area of land, the lower limit of soil water contents for different crops at their different growing stages and online meteorological data. A smartphone app was developed based on this framework. The running of the app to simulate soil water contents based on the soil water balance equation was supported by databases on soil texture, crop coefficients, water rights, E-Wc and threshold soil water content values as well as the real-time collection of electricity consumption and meteorological data. The simulated real-time soil water contents were shown on the mobile phone screen and could be compared with the threshold values for making irrigation decisions for users. The accuracy in forecasting the soil water contents using the methods developed in this framework was tested under different irrigation schedules for winter wheat and summer maize during 2018–2019 and 2021–2022, and the app was tested for three locations starting from sowing winter wheat in October 2022 to April in 2023. The results showed that the app could be easily run, and precise real-time soil water contents were simulated. With the application of the pumping well renovation project in the NCP, most of the pumping wells were installed with the SEMs, and using SEMs for groundwater pumping control and irrigation decisions should be possible.
