The Electrical Insulation Conference (EIC) is preparing to hold its 41st conference in Quebec City in June. The first official conference was held in 1958 with 1,100 attendees. The conference is an off-shoot of the CEIDP (Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomenon). The focus of the EIC is application based. My personal involvement started in 1985 as an author. The presentation experience is one of those times in my life when I was pushed well outside my comfort zone. It helped me gain confidence with my presentation skills, which I am grateful for and has assisted me throughout my career.

Obituary: Charles A. Wilson

Charles A. (Chuck) Wilson, 79, passed away on July 13, 2020 in Georgetown, Texas. Chuck was a long-time member and volunteer of DEIS and a regular attendee of the Electrical Insulation Conference since 1983. He participated extensively in specification development efforts acting as Working Group Chair for P1776, P522 and P792 and as contributor to many others. He also served as Chair of the PES Materials Subcommittee.

The general theme of the 2019 IEEE Electrical Insulation Conference was volunteerism and service to the electrical industry, and I can't think of a better example of how volunteer teams come together than to host such an informative and entertaining event. The enthusiasm for what many would consider a dry topic — electrical insulation — was contagious, the oral and poster presentations were informative, and the venue was spectacular. The plenary presentation during the opening session was given by Dr. Paul Lewin of the University of Southampton, a dedicated volunteer himself, on the benefits, both personal and professional, of participating as a volunteer for IEEE. His logical approach, as evidenced by his own history with IEEE, was both entertaining and inspiring. And, most importantly, we all learned the difference between beer and cookies. (For the answer to that challenge, you must come to EIC 2020).

Bulletin board [2019 IEEE Electrical Insulation Conference

The 37th IEEE Electrical Insulation Conference (EIC) will be held in Calgary, Canada, June 16 to 19, 2019. The EIC is the primary conference of the IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society that is devoted to the practical application of electrical insulation to electrical and electronic apparatus. Almost 200 abstracts have been accepted for presentation in three parallel oral sessions and two poster sessions at the Hyatt Regency in Calgary. A review of the abstracts shows that the 2019 conference will continue with its strong focus on the practical aspects of new insulation materials, failure mechanisms, and testing. As usual, the papers are from both industry and academia.

Young professionals

I joined the Manitoba Hydro High Voltage Test Facility as an Insulation Systems Test Engineer in January 2016. As part of my regular duties, I plan, coordinate, and execute accelerated aging and diagnostic tests on generator stator coils/bars for external commercial customers and Manitoba Hydro. Since day one, my supervisor, Nathan Jacob, has recommended that I attend the Electrical Insulation Conference (EIC) and IEEE Materials Subcommittee Working Group meetings. He emphasized that attending the EIC not only benefits our Test Facility but also my professional development and future career progression.

Report on the 33rd Electrical Insulation Conference, June 7–10, 2015, Seattle, WA, USA

This year’s DEIS fully sponsored EIC was held June 7 to 10 at the Renaissance Seattle Hotel, Seattle. On Sunday, June 7, a DEIS-sponsored workshop on the effect of smart grid technologies on plant health was organized by the DEIS Smart Grid Technical Committee and featured invited contributions from Vic Catterson (University of Strathclyde, UK), James Pilgrim (University of Southampton, UK), Jerome Castellon (Universite de Montpelier, France), Brian Sparling (Dynamic Ratings Inc., USA), Gian Carlo Montanari (University of Bologna, Italy), Kaori Fukanaga (NIICT, Japan), Peter Morshuis and Armando Rodrigo Mor (Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands). As is the tradition with the EIC, short courses were also organized on the Sunday of the conference; this year the three courses were Forensic Analysis of Insulation System Failures delivered by Howard Penrose, Dreisilker Electric Motors Inc., USA; Insulation Condition Monitoring and Incipient Fault Diagnosis of Power Cables with Case Studies delivered by Charles Su, Newcastle University, UK; Stator Winding Design, Manufacturing, Installation and Testing for Rotating Equipment delivered by Nancy Frost, Gerome Technologies, USA, with Inna Kremza, Voith Hydro, Canada, and Charles Millet, Hydro-Quebec, Canada.

Report on 32nd Electrical Insulation Conference

The 32nd Electrical Insulation Conference was held from June 8 to 11, 2014 at the Sheraton Downtown hotel in Philadelphia, PA. With the recent joining of the EIC and the International Symposium on Electrical Insulation (ISEI), and a change from biennial to yearly scheduling, this was the first EIC held in an even-numbered year since 1968. In tough economic times we were able to hold the line on attendance, with a total of 196 participants from 25 different countries covering all major continents except Antarctica. A total of 173 abstracts were submitted, resulting in a final program containing 101 papers, 24 of which were presented in the poster session.

As we approach the start of preparation of the technical program for the 2015 Electrical Insulation Conference to be held in Seattle, Washington, June 8 to 11, 2015, it is worth briefly considering the origins of this conference series and the technological changes that have impacted on our discipline. The very first EIC in 1958 was primarily concerned with practical issues relating to electrical insulation and high-voltage plant. There was a need for this new conference because the pre-existing CEIDP conference series concentrated on blue skies, cutting-edge research, and was not a natural home for the reporting of industrially centered, practical, electrical insulation R & D. The first conference was designed to allow both promotion of new products and developments as well as the presentation of technical papers (T. E. Castaldi and J. Tanaka, "History of the Electrical Insulation Conference," IEEE TDEI, vol. 9, no. 5, pp. 655-665). It clearly was a success; 155 papers were presented and there were 1,100 attendees. By the end of the 1960s there had been nine conferences in the series, and the basic format and conference structure had been established, for many years cosponsored by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association and the IEEE DEIS and from 1969 until 2013 held biennially.
