Development of an advanced current mode charging control strategy system for electric vehicle batteries

Electric vehicles (EVs) face customer hesitancy due to challenges in locating fast charging stations, lengthy recharging times, and incompatible charging ports. This research addresses these issues by proposing a novel current mode control strategy for EV battery charging. Traditional charging methods often result in suboptimal rates, battery degradation, and safety risks. The primary objective is to enhance charging efficiency, safety, and battery lifespan by optimizing parameters such as voltage and current. Control mode charging offers significant advantages over plug-in charging by minimizing stress factors that contribute to degradation, such as high temperatures and excessive charging cycles. This approach aims to extend the lifespan of EV batteries while ensuring safe, efficient, and fast charging. The control system offers three charging modes: slow (0.49 A, 6.31 W, 264 mins), medium (2.74 A, 34.85 W, 50 mins), and fast (4.62 A, 50.80 W, 30 mins) using a 12 V single-phase supply. This advanced strategy significantly improves EV charging system efficiency, with fast charging achieving 80% higher efficiency than slow charging in both simulations and experimental testing. The key contribution of this research is the development of a tailored current mode charging strategy that optimizes charging efficiency while ensuring battery longevity and safety.

The Development Of Charging System Infrastructure For Electric Vehicles

The increasing use of electric vehicles (EV) requires adequate and efficient charging system infrastructure. One of the main things is the electric vehicle (EV) battery charging system. This research aims to develop a charging system infrastructure for EVs using a DC to DC converter. The system is designed to ensure safety, efficiency and compatibility with a wide range of EVs. The system is also capable of producing voltage from 12 volts to more than 60 volts, which is enough to charge electric vehicle batteries. Correlation analysis simulations with MATLAB and experimental testing were carried out to evaluate the performance of the charging system. This circuit can charge batteries with voltage variations from 12 volts to 60 volts which are widely used in electric vehicles. The results of correlation analysis show that there is a correlation between charging current and charging time. Where the greater the charging current, the faster the charging time. The temperature of the battery when charging must also be paid attention to so that overheating does not occur which can damage the battery cells.

Design and Analysis of a Novel Wireless Electric Vehicle Battery Charging System Using Dual T‐Type Converter With High Efficiency and Bidirectional Capability

ABSTRACTRecently, numerous bidirectional wireless power transfer (WPT) systems with enhanced features for electric vehicle (EV) battery charging have been proposed. The converters in these WPT systems are generally configured with two synchronized full‐bridge–controlled converters operating at fixed duty cycle (two‐level operation) to enable WPT between the transmitter and receiver magnetic charge couplers. However, these require additional circuits to be employed in a wide range of load conditions, which lead to high costs and reduced power density. As a substitute, this article introduces a new wireless EV charging system using bidirectional dual T‐type converter (BDTC) configuration with PWM control. A wide range of load variations can be obtained without any additional circuits/switches with a proposed charging system based on a BDTC. Due to the reduced switching loss, reduced reactive circulating current, low cost, and increased efficiency, along with simple control, the proposed architecture offers significant advantages over traditional WPT systems. The proposed wireless EV charging system operates with series resonance in both directions. A mathematical model of the BDTC converter is developed, and the operating principle is detailed. Experimental results were acquired from the 3.3‐kW laboratory model, which exhibits nearly flat efficiency characteristics under various loading conditions; hence, the feasibility of the BDTC topology is validated.

Enhancing grid-connected PV-EV charging station performance through a real-time dynamic power management using model predictive control

This paper presents a novel station manager algorithm for grid-connected PV-EV charging stations, designed to address key challenges in current systems. Existing charging stations often encounter issues such as unstable PV power generation and dependence on grid stability, which can interrupt the EV charging process during grid faults. Additionally, PV arrays are typically designed to extract maximum power, leading to over-current or over-voltage situations that compromise the safety of the charging infrastructure and the EV. Furthermore, these systems often require multiple power electronics converters, increasing complexity and costs while reducing overall system efficiency. To overcome these limitations, the proposed algorithm dynamically switches between on-grid and off-grid modes based on real-time weather conditions, grid availability, and the state of charge of the battery electric vehicle (BEV). This approach maximizes PV power utilization, minimizes grid dependency, and enhances BEV charging performance while prioritizing EV safety and ensuring an uninterrupted power supply. It also provides flexibility in BEV power sizing, optimizing the use of power electronics converters to reduce costs and complexity. Two distinct operating modes, adaptive charging and fast charging, are introduced, each integrated with dedicated model predictive controllers (MPC) to achieve specific control objectives. Semi-experimental simulations using a process-in-the-loop (PIL) test approach with the embedded board eZdsp TMS320F28335 demonstrate that the station manager significantly improves performance over conventional methods under various irradiance levels. Moreover, numerical results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed MPC-based approach over traditional controllers such as Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) and Sliding Mode Control (SMC) in different charging modes. For instance, the MPC controller achieved an Integral Absolute Error (IAE) of 11.45%, lower than that of the PID controller, and 4.3% lower than the SMC controller.

Novel Droop-Based Techniques for Dynamic Performance Improvement in a Linear Active Disturbance Rejection Controlled-Dual Active Bridge for Fast Battery Charging of Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicles (EVs) are rapidly replacing fossil-fuel-powered vehicles, creating a need for a fast-charging infrastructure that is crucial for their widespread adoption. This research addresses this challenge by improving the control of dual active bridge converters, a popular choice for high-power EV charging stations. A critical issue in EV battery charging is the smooth transition between charging stages (constant current and constant voltage) which can disrupt converter performance. This work proposes a novel feedforward control method using a combination of droop-based techniques combined with a sophisticated linear active disturbance rejection control system applied to a single-phase shift-modulated dual active bridge. This combination ensures a seamless transition between charging stages and enhances the robustness of the system against fluctuations in both input voltage and load. Numerical simulations using MATLAB/Simulink R2024a demonstrated that this approach not only enables smooth charging but also reduces the peak input converter current, allowing for the use of lower-rated components in the converter design. This translates to potentially lower costs for building these essential charging stations and faster adoption of EVs.

Design and analysis of a high-efficiency bi-directional DAB converter for EV charging

The escalating demand for electric vehicles (EVs) arises from apprehensions regarding fossil fuel depletion and the ecological repercussions of conventional combustion engines, propelling the transition towards environmentally sustainable alternatives. EVs are conventionally comprised of a powertrain, battery management system, and communication infrastructure, with the battery playing a pivotal role. Achieving an efficient EV battery charger necessitates the implementation of a proficient charging algorithm and a high-power converter capable of adeptly regulating battery parameters. Among the array of available options, a bi-directional DC/DC converter is often employed for this purpose. This study predominantly focuses on the Bi-Directional Dual Active Bridge Converter with Single-Phase Shift Control. It is renowned for attaining a broad voltage range through transformer turn ratio adjustments. Its controllable parameters, such as phase shift ratio and duty cycle, bolster its versatility. Moreover, due to its input–output isolation and minimal passive elements, this converter exhibits superior efficiency due to its soft-switching capabilities. The analytical framework encompasses steady-state and dynamic assessments, small-signal modeling, and system transfer function analysis, all of which contribute to formulating an optimized controller design. Additionally, the study conducts simulations of various battery charging techniques, including constant current (CC), constant voltage (CV), and CCCV mode, employing a 1.5 kW Dual Active Bridge DAB-based charger through MATLAB/SIMULINK. Furthermore, voltage mode control simulations for a 5 kW DAB converter augment the study's insights into effective EV charging strategies.

Highway wind energy conversion with a savonius-darrieus hybrid turbine

The need for electrical energy for applications such as self-powered traffic signals, highway lights, and battery charging of electric vehicles has led to ongoing efforts to develop specially designed turbines that can efficiently convert wind energy generated by vehicles traveling on highways into electricity. In this study, a new hybrid vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) is designed by combining three-bladed Savonius and two-bladed Darrieus turbines on a vertical axis. This newly designed double VAWT was manufactured, and the power outputs at a wind speed of 5 m/s obtained experimentally were compared with the results of Savonius and Darrieus turbines. Comparative analyses with conventional Savonius and Darrieus turbines revealed the superior power performance of the new double VAWT design. The energy production of the double VAWT design using wind generated by various vehicles on highways, including cars, minibuses, mini trucks, buses, and trucks, has been evaluated. The optimum positioning of the turbine on highways that provides the highest power output with a double VAWT was determined. All calculations are based on measured voltage and current values at the generator connected to the turbine. The results show that the newly proposed double VAWT design achieves the best performance with a maximum CP value of 0.223. Furthermore, the optimal horizontal and vertical positioning of the turbine with respect to the roadside of highways was determined. The maximum speed recorded at the turbine was 3.7 m/s, obtained with a truck. The best power output of the turbine was obtained from trucks among the five vehicles mentioned. It has been estimated that the hybrid wind turbine designed, produced, and tested in this study can generate approximately 35 kWh of electricity per year on a highway with heavy vehicle traffic.

A cost-effectiveness comparison of renewable energy pathways for decarbonizing heavy-duty vehicles in China

Decarbonizing heavy-duty vehicles is becoming increasingly important, yet multiple renewable-based decarbonization pathways have not been compared systematically. To fill this gap, this study develops a techno-economic and environmental model that integrates the fuel cycle and vehicle cycle to assess these pathways for China. The model includes two energy storage technologies: batteries and hydrogen, three energy transmission options, and two vehicle types: fuel cell electric vehicles and battery electric vehicles. Five distinct low-carbon pathways are evaluated on a ton-kilometer basis, including cost, greenhouse gas emissions, and abatement cost relative to conventional diesel trucks. Results indicate that the most cost-effective battery electric vehicle pathway offers a 7 % lower ton-km cost than diesel trucks for a 49-ton gross vehicle weight. Battery electric vehicle charging combined with hydrogen for power generation is more cost-effective than direct use of hydrogen in fuel cell electric vehicles. All studied pathways can achieve over 80 % emission reduction compared to diesel trucks, with fuel cell electric vehicle pathways having the highest abatement costs of 103–117 USD/tonCO2. Analysis of the impact of gross vehicle weight and vehicle range indicates that battery electric vehicle pathways outperform fuel cell electric vehicle pathways across most dimensions. Costs of battery electric vehicle pathways do increase sharply for vehicle ranges beyond about 700 km, and fuel cell electric vehicles become more cost-effective relative to battery electric vehicles for ranges above approximately 1100 km, although all pathways are much more costly than diesel trucks at long ranges. The sensitivity analysis highlights the importance of powertrain efficiency and cost projections show that fuel cell electric heavy-duty vehicles can achieve cost-parity before 2030. These results highlight the desirability of promoting the adoption of heavier battery electric vehicles and providing more targeted subsidies for long-range fuel cell electric vehicles.

Energy system models should consider evolving charging profiles

Abstract Globally, sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are surpassing records every year, and their growing charging needs will ultimately reshape power infrastructure planning practices. While studies have analyzed the impact of light-duty BEVs on the electricity sector, they have overlooked the prospective evolution in charging profiles. We developed a framework for analyzing passenger vehicle electrification futures accounting for the evolution in charging infrastructure, BEVs technical features, and socio-demographics. We soft-link a BEV charging profiles generator with an energy system optimization model to analyze a light-duty vehicle (LDV) electrification scenario in the U.S. from 2020-2050. Compared to static charging profiles, common in prior work, evolving profiles lead to substantial differences in projected power plant installed capacity (up to ~300 GW more solar PV) and activity (up to ~460 TWh more solar PV generation). Hence, future studies should consider not only different charging profiles (e.g., day, night, uncontrolled) but also how these evolve over time.

Design and Experimental Verification of Electric Vehicle Battery Charger Using Kelvin-Connected Discrete MOSFETs and IGBTs for Energy Efficiency Improvement

This research investigates the advantages of Kelvin-connected 4-pin discrete transistors, both MOSFETs and IGBTs, in onboard battery chargers for electric vehicles. The study compares the standard 3-pin and the extended 4-pin packages based on averaged data collected from leading manufacturers. The investigation shows significant potential power loss reduction, thermal operation mitigation, and reduced gate-drive oscillation for the 4-pin package. The benefits have been quantified by analysing the operation of actual switches in an automotive battery charger based on Boost-PFC and DC-DC LLC converters. The converters’ practical design demonstrates a procedure for integrating the Kelvin-connected package into the design methodology. The results have been verified experimentally.

Investigating the effects of variable pulse charging on temperature during charging of battery electric vehicles

This study investigates the efficacy of variable pulse charging (VPC) on charging 18,650 secondary battery packs (12 V, 20 Ah) with NMC chemistry. VPC, a modern technique applied to secondary battery charging, aims to mitigate effects like a thermal runaway and thermal propagation caused by increased charging temperature. VPC involves varied duty factors (10 % to 90 %), charging rates (0.5C, 1C, 1.5C), and an optimal switching frequency determined through frequency response analysis. Its digital model is based on in situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements and MATLAB/Simulink simulations. At charging rates of 0.5C (10 A), 1C (20 A), and 1.5C (30 A), the temperature of the battery pack reaches 42.46 °C, 57.87 °C, and 70.37 °C, respectively. However, implementing VPC at a 50 % duty factor yields temperature reductions of 3.66 °C, 5.06 °C, and 5.42 °C, respectively. Similarly, employing VPC at a 10 % duty cycle results in temperature reductions of 11.2 °C, 17.7 °C, and 19.1 °C, respectively. The results indicate a significant reduction in charging temperature compared to constant current charging. Furthermore, the 1C condition is validated using a custom-made dual active bridge DC-DC variable pulse charger. In conclusion, applying optimal frequency-based VPC with specific duty factors demonstrates the potential to reduce temperature elevation during battery pack charging significantly.

One Health Ecological Approach to Sustainable Wireless Energy Transfer Aboard Electric Vehicles for Smart Cities

This investigation is part of a topical situation where wireless equipment is gradually being used for energy transfer, particularly for autonomous systems and the use of decarbonized energies. A characteristic example of decarbonized autonomous use is linked to the substitution of thermal engine vehicles for electric vehicles (EVs) equipped with energy storage batteries. This response was considered in an ecological context of reducing air pollution and defending planetary biodiversity, which are currently vital. These EVs ultimately operate thanks to the wireless charging of their batteries when stationary or running. By changing long-established means of transport that have become a threat to biodiversity, it is necessary to ensure that innovative replacement solutions protect this biodiversity. In addition, the construction of wireless power transfer (WPT) battery chargers for these EVs must offer an optimal ecology of clean energy saving. In such a context, the two concepts of One Health (OH) and Responsible Attitude (RA) will find their place in the design and control of WPT tools in EVs. This contribution aims to illustrate and analyze the roles of the green and non-wasteful OH and RA approaches in the design and control of WPT embedded in EVs for the smart city (SC) environment. In the paper, WPT tools are first introduced. The design and control of EV battery charging tools are then examined. The biological effects on living tissues due to the electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation of WPT are analyzed. The phenomena and equations governing the design of WPT and the effects of EMF radiation are then exposed. The OH and RA approaches in the SC context are afterward analyzed. The protection against the unsafe effects of WPT tools in the SC environment is consequently explored. The analyses followed in the paper are supported by examples from the literature. The explorations proposed in this contribution have made it possible to highlight certain notions, allowing a more in-depth understanding of the use of EVs with WPT rechargeable batteries for SCs. Thus, the analysis and fusion of these topics are at the heart of this contribution.

Electric Vehicle Battery Charger with IOT System

The accelerating adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) has elicited the requirement for modern and developed charging solutions that promise efficiency, as well reliability. In this paper, we propose an Internet of Things (IoT) enabled DC electric vehicle charger to meet these requirements. The solution offers IoT functionalities for full and remote monitoring, diagnostics roadside assistance as well as charging management adapting to the available power. Making use of top-level sensors and connectivity, the charger system optimizes energy usage by intelligent grid balancing as well as enables dynamic load balancing techniques for installation-wise benefits such that it is possible to implement predictive maintenance. Meanwhile, IoT integration ensures a seamless user experience through mobile apps so that users can check the charging status of their vehicle and set up sessions at different times of the day while receiving important notifications. DC EV chargers are faster at charging than normal Alternating Current (AC) ones. They transform electricity from the grid into a form that can be directly applied in the vehicle battery. This ability translates to highly reduce charging times, which explains why they are well-suited for along highways and in commercial applications or urban settings where fast turnaround is critical. These trends are identified by service providers to improve charger placement and availability for drivers

ANFIS-based control of resonant converters for optimized charging system of electric vehicle (EV) batteries

This paper presents a resonant converter-based Electric Vehicle (EV) battery charging module utilizing Proportional-Integral (PI) and Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) control for an optimized charging system. The EV charging module is integrated with a resonant converter comprising a full bridge, HFTF, and DBR. The module utilizes a Resonant Converter which reduces the switching loss incurred during converter operation at high frequency by offering ZCS or ZVS at the switching time. A standard PI Controller manages the duty ratios of the primary full bridge switches with tuned gains. The CC and CV controllers each have their own PI Controller for current and voltage, respectively. To enhance the performance of the EV System, the standard PI Controllers in both the CC and CV control systems are replaced with ANFIS Controllers which are trained as per the data generated by the CC and CV control using an optimization technique that controls the duty ratio of the switches. The proposed ANFIS-based and PI-based control strategy provides an adaptive and flexible approach to control the battery voltage and current by intelligent adjustment of Constant Current (CC) and Constant Voltage (CV) operation modes and the passive elements switching across specific ranges of State-Of-Charge (SOC) to enhance the performance and safety of the charging system. MATLAB Simulation results demonstrated that the proposed ANFIS-based control reduces current ripple content compared to PI-based control. The ANFIS Controller improves overall battery performance, reliability, and stability, which makes it a better choice for next-generation EV charging systems.

Energy-efficient Vienna rectifier for electric vehicle battery charging stations

Global DC fast-charging infrastructure is being rapidly developed to accommodate the ever-increasing demand from the electric vehicle market. A major complication in the electric power system's process is the proliferation of ultra-fast charging (UFC) stations, which are known for their enormous power consumption and unpredictable, intermittent performance. By implementing grid-supportive features and ensuring an improved power consumption profile for the grid, installing regional energy storage can solve these challenges. This study presents a control approach for managing the grid-side AC/DC converters of rapid charging stations focused on future-oriented regulation. The paper primarily concentrates on various Vienna rectifier topologies. The technology, characteristics, benefits, and operational aspects of Vienna rectifier topologies are vital to improving the performance, efficiency, and grid integration of electric vehicle charging systems. Fast charging, grid stability, energy economy, and the smooth integration of electric vehicles into the electrical grid are all made possible by Vienna rectifiers. When used in battery energy storage systems (BESS) for electric vehicle charging infrastructure, Vienna rectifiers allow for effective discharge and charging of the batteries. The configurations and assessments of these converters are examined, assessed, and compared based on power output parameters, element count, power factor, THD, and efficiency. The Vienna rectifier has been identified as the best suitable DC fast-charging converter architecture for power levels exceeding 15 kW due to its exceptional efficiency, limited output voltage ripples, high power density, reduced current ripples, and reliable performance. Research on ways to improve electric vehicle charging infrastructure can be spurred by a better grasp of the Vienna rectifier's technological complexities and performance benefits, leading to greener and more efficient transportation options. As a result, the system's power density will eventually rise and elemental stress will decrease.

Investigating Li-Ion Depletion during Fast Charging with Operando FTIR

Lithium-ion concentration polarization and slow ionic transport in the electrolyte phase hinder fast charging of electric vehicle batteries and can cause cell degradation. Although pseudo-2D (P2D) models capture concentration polarization phenomena during fast charging, experimental measurements of Li-ion concentration in the electrolyte phase have been limited. In this research, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and attenuated total reflection (ATR) were used to collect operando optical measurements of Li-ion concentration in a high-loading graphite/NMC811 full cell with 1.2M LiPF6 in 3/7 (wt./wt.) ethylene carbonate (EC)/ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC). For this research, an optically accessible operando battery was developed that enables real-time measurements of Li-ion concentration at the back of the graphite anode near the current collector. Significant Li-ion concentration changes up to 0.5M were observed during charging at 1C, 2C, and 3C, as well as discharging at C/2, and compared with a P2D model. Both the model and the experiments showed Li-ion depletion and sinuous fluctuations at the graphite/current collector interface that indicate non-ideal behavior. These gradients likely develop due to insufficient electrolyte transport properties. This research enables novel Li-ion concentration measurements with FTIR. This research also validates P2D model physics for measuring and analyzing Li-ion concentration polarization at fast charging rates.
