Kirloskar Brothers Limited - A Leading Player in the World of Pumps

Kirlokar Brothers Limited (KBL) is a part of one of India's largest industrial conglomerates - the Kirloskar Group. Incorporated in 1920, KBL was a pioneer in the manufacture of agricultural equipment, diesel engines, electric motors, and centrifugal pumps in India. It formed the bedrock for the creation and expansion of the entire Kirloskar Group. Today, KBL still maintains its important position - it's the largest manufacturer and exporter of pumps in all India.

A decision support model for customer value assessment and supply quota allocation

The aim of this study is to develop a decision support tool for a supplier in a value-chain environment. The supplier under consideration is assumed to provide a strategic product to a number of customers and needs to allocate his capacity among them in a way to maximize his business value. First, an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) structure is designed to represent the criteria which are identified from the supplier's point of view to assess customer performance, and customer priorities are obtained by using the AHP composition principle. Then, these are deployed in numerical algorithms which aim to allocate the total supply capacity among customers as supply quotas. The approach is implemented in an electric motor manufacturer in Turkey, which possesses high competitive power with advanced manufacturing technology.

An integrated supplier-buyer model for improving supply chain coordination

This study develops a decision support model that can be used by a supplier in making production and price decisions at contract renewal times in a supply chain environment. The supplier first makes aggregate production decisions with a special attempt to estimate buyer commitments, and then determines the price of the item so as to satisfy his own profit and buyer cost reduction expectations simultaneously. Mathematical programming models are designed to achieve these in accordance with the contract terms. The main emphasis is placed upon the conceptual and negotiation aspects of the models, and some solution procedures are cited from previous studies. Then the approach is implemented in the biggest electric motor manufacturer in Turkey which has a large number of buyers in household appliances sector, and it is shown to be a useful tool for developing fair partnership.

An integrated modelling method to support manufacturing systems analysis and design

This paper presents a modelling method—GI-SIM (GRAI/IDEF-Simulation)—developed to meet the requirements of manufacturing system analysis and design. The GI-SIM method combines three important concepts of modelling methods (conceptual, functional and simulation) in an integrated structure. It enables a system analyst and designer to build system models from the basic functional specifications to the sub-activity dynamic simulation level. This integrated modelling method presents the global view of the manufacturing system in a single level grid and uses IDEF0 to model every activity centre. Then lowest levels of activity centre, described by the IDEF0 sub-activity models, can be translated into a simulation modelling tool to measure and evaluate system performance. A computer-based support tool has been developed to assist model building and connect model objects and elements. To demonstrate and validate the modelling method and computerised tools developed, a case study has been carried out in an electric motor manufacturing company.

Abstract The paper deals with integrated test and quality assurance systems for monitoring 3rd control of advanced production lines in electrotechnical industry The focus of the paper is on the application of innovative data processing technologies based on neural networks which are used both for acoustic signal interpretation as well as for rage processing By describing examples of their application in the manufacturing of electric motors and in the assembly of Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) both the technological approach as well as the conclusions from the industrial application are discussed.

However, at the outset one of the lecturer's remarks rather puzzled 'toe. It was to the effect that the reliability required from his product was so great that a good deal of time and energy had to be spent in obtaining tests during the period of manufacture.
